View Full Version : For Hire: Fabrication Welder (Person) to make me a spanner wrench

danewilson77

So....I have spare cartridges for my KW V1's. I would like to enlist the expertise of someone to make me a custom spanner wrench. Willing to pay whatever....to a point :)

Anyway.....I am thinking a tool with a 10" handle, round head (with a hole in it), and 2 (or 4) "pegs" welded onto the ring will do what I need. I don't need a piece of art...just something that works.

If you think you fit this bill (and are up to this challenge), please let me know. I realize the person enlisted will need distance measurement of holes, 180 degree's apart.

additionally, those holes are dead ended, so, you will also need a depth measurement. I will provide both.

Thinking about it further....I think "2 pegs" is the best option here (for fitup).

I don't need this today...but someday, it would be nice to have this tool, so when I'm ready, I can just get to work.

I appreciate any help.

P.S. You had me at "Hello".

P.S.S. You "complete me"

Shit man... If I was at work on the ship, I could handle this for you no sweat. If you haven't gotten one by the time I get back out there, I will for sure take care of you... I have to make custom tools all the time.

Dane! Hah, I actually am heading back to work. I fly to LA tomorrow, and I'll be on the ship soon after that. So, I can start to work on this for you. I will have internet access out there, so we can chat via email and PM and whatnot, or this thread, and decide on dimensions, design, and all that good stuff.

Thanks Horney for the mention though!

I made a tool just like that once but it somehow walked away :mad

Here's a quick drawing of what I did:

Basically you would screw the cap screws into the pair of threaded holes that were the correct distance apart for what you were doing.

I could make a couple more but I won't have time till prob middle of next month.

Dane, looks simple. I could throw together a design but, I'm not sure if I could find anyone to make it. All you really need is a "U" at the end of a piece of flat stock and press fit a 2 Dowel Pins slightly smaller than the holes in the cartridges.

"How do I get a new spanner wrench for replacement parts for my KW’s?
If you need wrenches or parts for your KW coilovers, your KW dealer will be able to order any parts you may require."

Did you get a price from a dealer?

I did not want to go through dealer. Didn't want any warranty discussions to come up. I'd rather have some built by the family. Thanks for everyones offers.

Dane,
Bring measurements, forget that hell you'll have the car with you in Oct. Marty my exhaust friend is a master welder, TIG, MIG, & stick all sitting in his shop. Don't know if he has a piece of flat stock sitting around like that but there's a metal shop nearby we could hit up on Friday to get the materials and Marty can weld it up for a beer or two. When I need something small like this done, I arrive at his house with a 12 pack or two in hand and I've never paid him a dime.

Wow, all kinds of offers. Dane, up to you buddy. Mine will be done for free, admittedly in my free time, but it wouldn't be too hard to do. I was going to plasma out the overall shape, grind and finish it smoothly, and then drill/press fit/weld in two pins for you. We actually have tools like this on the ship now that we use for various equipment overhauls...

So, let me know. From me, it'll be free... Well, BP will be paying me my overtime rate to do so, but it'll be free to the Mafia... :biggrin

Excellent! The corporation is huge and lots of room. Personally I work for a tanker company that is owned by BP, but at the end of the day, money all still comes from the same place.

JupiterBMW is going to make this for me while he's at sea. It will give him something to do :)

Here's the measurements Jooopy. Let me know if you need anything else.

EDIT: It's irritating that every one of these pictures were fixed/rotated in PB but they still show up this way. Really, really annoying.

Hah.. It will give me something to do... You're kidding right?? :rofl I spent yesterday doing valve lash on one of the main engines and then last night we were rolling a lot, so I was up all night answering alarms. 3 hours of sleep... LOL...

But, this is good. I appreciate the super awesome images and measurements. I will start on this soon. I've been thinking about this, and only question I have is how much room do you have to turn the tool when in place? I imagine you having to get to these holes with the coilover on the car, which means you are working in the confines of the wheel well? I'm thinking about an offset design, something that will have pins on both sides so that you can flip it over and have more options for tool placement... Make sense?

Also, not sure what sort of torque you need to make adjustments... So, how long of a handle do you need?

danewilson77
09-22-2012, 11:22 AM
Absolutely not.

Turn room is unlimited as the coilover has to be removed from the car to replace the dampener.

This is not a height adjustment tool. This is a disassembly tool to facilitate the install of a new dampner, into the coilover body.

Thanks Joooopy Dooopy. I know you're busy...that's why I wanted you to do it. It builds character :)

EDIT: I fixed the pics. That was gonna drive me nuts. Additionally....the measurements you see are me just hitting it with the caliper and stopping. I definetely do not think you need to make said tool to exact/perfect dimensions...but I thought it would be prudent to provide you with actual measurements.

So...for the hole diameter measurement, I would assume you would want to make those (the pins) a tad smaller (say 5.9-6.0mm).

Everything else should be close, and I can tweak it from there when I get it.

Thinking maybe I should sell these KW V1 fronts after I rebuild them to new. I have the dampeners...just need the tool. Then all someone would need are lowering springs for the rear....to drop their whip. Or...I'll just keep as a spare set. Who knows.

Thanks again.

DW

No worries man, I'm just glad you posted clear pics and measurements taken with a caliper as opposed to a busted ass tape measure... :rofl

Ok, so room is not a concern, sounds good. I will start on this soon. We're pulling into Alaska on Monday, but I won't be able to mail it off from there. So it'll most likely get shipped out from down South... So, figure 10 days or so? I assume no rush still... :)

Thanks for the comments. I'm hoping to be able to machine some pins and then press them in so I don't have to drop a weld in there. But, we shall see. The 4 holes are 5.5mm and I was going to make the pins about 5.8mm and see if I can press them in. We'll see how it goes.

Will post more pics when I get another chance to work on it. Today, not so much...

Sorry for the late reply, but its essentially finished. I welded a handle on it, filed it all smooth and blended it to look as decent as I could. I started to get rushed , so it doesn't look nearly as good as I had hoped, but it should work just fine and do the trick for you. I will post a couple pics that I took recently of the finished product.

Let me know your thoughts and I can adjust as needed...

Thanks Justin. One of the items I was always "timid" of and unknowledgable about was rebuilding coilovers. These obviously are very easy. Every couple of years....when they wear out....I will contact KW and have them simply send me new dampeners. Lifetime guarantee. Win.
