View Full Version : Wheel Spacer - Opinions?

Hello Owners, hope all is well.
So I ordered my KW V2 coil-overs today and I was thinking about doing wheel spacers to give it a flush look and stance - I am running stock ZHP wheels with V12 Hankook tires. The auto sport garage that is doing the work, told me he don’t recommend spacers. Do any of you concur? I just wanted to get an honest opinion from the experts on here.
Appreciate any feedback you can provide.

I have logged many of miles on spacers on my previous car and now the zhp. Just get hubcentric spacers made for the car and you should be fine.

I run them all the time. I would recommend the TMS spacers with black lugs. The only consideration, is you may get more wheel bearing wear.

Dane and Blaster, thanks for the feedback -this is making me lean more towards getting them now. What do y'all recommend for sizes to get a nice flush stance. Again, I am staying with my stock zhp wheels.
Thanks

If you have the stock wheels installed now...just measure. I'm thinking with 255's on the rear...you won't be going more than 10mm's, with the offset of the 135's, and 10mm's will def work up front.
Take the measurements then let me know.

I've heard 12mm and 10 mm is pretty standard for a stock setup that's lowered some, rolled fenders. I'm no expert, but from what I've read, the knock on spacers is really about racing, not street driving, etc.
I have 15mm rear with 235's and 12mm front with 225. Rear fenders are rolled but not sure they needed it.
Edit: didn't read the first part about lowering. I'm on stock setup.

I've got 10mm front with 225's and 12mm back with 255's. Rear fenders moderately rolled with very slight rubbing on hard bumps. Otherwise in normal streets w/ normal driving I never rub.
If I go to 10mm on my rears, I'm quite sure I won't rub at all.
Just make sure they're hub-centric and you won't have any problems. I'm also using TMS spacers. I like these much more than other brands. :thumbsup

I actually rub ever so slightly with 12mm in the rear on certain bounces, so I'm switching to 10mm. Gary had the same issue with the H&R Kit.

I dont know what is going on with H and R Cup kit. I had style 135's on my car at first. I had run 20mm spacers in the front and 15mm in the rear. I had to roll my fenders.I had a slight rub in the rear but it looked cool (I was running 255/35/18 in the rear BF Goodrich KDW). I then went to a 15mm in front and 12 mm in the rear no rub. I switched it up on more time 12mm front and 10mm in the rear. It got the look I wanted from there. I was using H and R spacers.
I never had any problems (until I used H and R cup kit with rubbing). My coilovers were great. You can get away with any of these set ups. It will all depend how aggressive you want to go. I had rolled my rear fenders rolled when coilovers were installed and 15mm (rear) spacers were put on. No issues whatsoever.

Spacer question for you guys?
I am seeing a lot of you in this section running bigger spacers in the rear than the front. What is the reasoning behind that? Dont mean to thread jack just curious?
I was running larger in the front because the front fender is pushed out more than the rear.

I was wondering the same. The front wheel is also skinnier than the rear too, so you'd think a bigger spacer up front would make sense so that the front/rear were equally flush.
What didn't you like about the 15/12 combo compared to the 12/10 that you ending up liking better? Was the 15/12 combo pushed out slightly too far? Did you take comparison pics, by chance?

I think typically this is done to replicate a staggered setup and/or bring the wheels flush to the fender.
***The above statement refers to someone running a non-staggered/square setup.

18x8.5" ET 38 with an average 255mm tire (around 260mm width) is the limit for a sedan. For a coupe figure you have 2-3 extra mm in the rear.
Spacer size is determined by offset, and true tire width (not the size they sell it as) which can be found under specs on TireRack.
To play it safe, generally take the average recommendation and subtract 2-3mm. So to be safe, if 10mm rear and 15mm front are said to work- I'd do 8mm rear and 12mm spacers front.
Make sure they are from a reputable brand, spacers get a bad name because of crap companies and eBay sales and the like.

Thanks for all the feedback gents - its been helpful. I hope this KW coil-over setup works well for me and looks good. Hoping I don't need a camber kit either.

Just put 12mm front, 10mm rear and I don't scrape. (Was scraping in the rear with the opposite setup). Rolled rear fenders, H&R Touring Cup Kit (so a little lower).

I got the spacers but didn't think to do what you did John! I think I'll swap out my spacers and place mine like you did (12mm front/10mm rear)
That should solve any rubbing issues I will ever have...especially when I put on coilovers :)

You definitely need at least 10mm all around. I was hitting in the front on a stock set up. (135') Even though the people that sell the KW kits will tell you no spacers, you will rub with out them

GMATT, you're so right! I just had my KW's installed on Friday on my stock ZHP wheels and the front tire was touching the spring. So as a temporary fix, they added a 3mm spacer so that I could at least drive home! I am doing TMS hub centric spacers all around this week. I am hoping to do 12mm back and 10mm front.

So I went ahead and got my TMS spacers installed today, I ended up going with 12.5mm all around. I will follow up with pics tomorrow when its lighter outside.
I am not sure if I like it yet, still mixed feelings at this point. Maybe some of you can give me feedback once I post pics tomorrow.

Here are some pics of my TMS spacers, 12.5mm all around. I am beginning to like the stance the more I drive it and look at it from a distance.

For anyone considering other setups, I have Macht Schnell 15mm front and 10mm rear with an H&R sport cup kit. Rear fenders are rolled and there's never been any rubbing.

Anyone running Dunlop Direzza Sport Z1 Star Spec with spacers?
These tires are visibly wider that the Hankooks that I previously had and the Hankooks were wider than the Bridgestone RE040's I had before that... all the same 255/35/18 tire.
With the Dunlops, it looks like a 10mm spacer will put the edge of the tire directly under the wheel well lip on the rears... IDK if even rolling will be enough to clear it...
I can't find an actual tread width because Dunlop doesn't puplish that but the sectional width is 10.4" Hankooks are sectional 10.2" and tread 9.7"

Section width should help you.
http://i1015.photobucket.com/albums/af278/nicee46/2-4.jpg
http://i1015.photobucket.com/albums/af278/nicee46/1-11.jpg
A tire's section width (also called "cross section width") is the measurement of the tire's width from its inner sidewall to its outer sidewall (excluding any protective ribs, decorations or raised letters) at the widest point. This measurement is made without any load placed upon the tire and after the tire has been properly mounted on its industry assigned measuring rim and has been inflated and reset to its test pressure after 24 hours.
Because a tire's section width is influenced by the width of the rim upon which the tire is mounted, the correct industry assigned measuring rim width for the tire size being measured must be used.
The width of a tire mounted on a narrow rim would be "narrower" than if the same tire was mounted on a wide rim. NOTE: because the overall diameter of a steel belted radial is determined by the steel belts, there is little, if any, change to the overall diameter of the tire due to differences in rim width.
The industry rule of thumb is that for every 1/2" change in rim width, the tire's section width will correspondingly change by approximately 2/10".
For example: a tire in the P205/60R15 size is measured on a 6.0" wide wheel and this size tire has an approved rim width range from 5.5" to 7.5" wide. The tire has a section width of 8.23" (209mm) when mounted on a 6.0" wide wheel. If that tire were mounted on all of the rims within its approved range, the tire's approximate section width would change as follows:

That would be why I referred to the "section width" as an alternate way for you to prove you weren't seeing things.

Ok gotcha...I'll be putting 10mm on the front so I'll try them on the back first and see what happens... hate to pay shipping twice by buying front and rear separate but it needs to be done...
