What do you folks use for engine oil? I was going to use the Liqui Moly full synthetic, I'm sure I cant go wrong with that. However, I am still interested in your thoughts. Thanks!!

BMW recommends Castrol High Performance SAE 5W-30 synthetic oil.
I use Mobil 1 0-40 Sythentic oil. I trust Mobil 1.
EDIT: This Thread Here (http://www.zhpmafia.com/forums/showthread.php?942-The-Oil-Thread) has a lot of useful information and can answer most of your oil questions.

I've used M1 0-40, Castrol 0-35 and BMW 5-35 (if I'm getting those weights right)
But I like the BMW oil the best.. and it has been the cheapest so far. Castrol takes a 2nd and M1 3rd. I didn't like the M1.

Every 6,000 mi. I flush with Liqui Moly Engine Flush, and use Liqui Moly 5W-30 with Liqui Moly Motor Protect. Over 40K on engine since I started this... No complaints.

Bmw 5w-30. I have used the Mobil 1 before which is also nice.
I may switch to Shell Rotella oil. I heard it's really good and it's cheap

My brother was running the Rotella in his STi and that shit was pricey! More than Mobil 1... Just FYI.

really? lol, my cousin uses it in his vw gti and he said when he bought it it was cheaper than Mobil 1, and Motul.
Maybe he used a coupon or there was a sale?
EDIT: he bought it at Wal-mart. He only paid like $23 for a gallon of it like Mike V said

BMW Castrol 5w-30 with oil & filter changes every 4,000. I am religious about my oil changes. Just ask my mechanic! I follow 3,000 mile intervals with conventional oil in my M44, which is still quite healthy at 238K mi.
I have heard great things about both Castrol & Shell Rotella T. I have used both of them in marine diesels (happily) for many, many years.
And before you ask, Red Line fluids for drivelines!

Only done one oil change in my two years of ownership...used M1 0W-40. Kinda thin and I haven't had to add any in the 10k+ it has been in the crank case. I'll be changing it first weekend in July with OEM BMW 5W-30.

I use Lubro Moly in the E36 M3 since that's what the PO was using, and Rotella T6 in the X5 since again, that's what the PO was using. Rotella T6 is available at WalMart in gallon jugs for just $23. The local NAPA store stocks the Lubro Moly, but it's not cheap. If I remember right, I paid $34 for a 5-qt jug.
Some say Mobil 1 isn't like it used to be, but there are so many different opinions out there.

I the summer in NC, which can be pretty hot, I hardly see any need for a 0w oil, so I use Pennzoil Euro Ultra 5w-40, (LL01 approved). I the winter, I might use the BMW (Castrol) 5/30, although there won't be any real 'cold' starts, as I have a garage now.
I change the oil every 8k miles.
Any oil change intervals below 7-8k miles with a modern synthetic oil is a waste of money.
(on our other 2 cars, which use conventional oils, oil is changed every 4-5k miles, and they have 165k miles and 190k miles respectively. Zero oil-related or engine repairs on both those cars.)
So really, changing oil sooner than 7-8k miles with syn oil is such a waste, unless you race/track or have some other modification that specifically demands it.
Hard to pick a 'favorite' - All those 'main' oils mentioned, with LL01 approval will be just fine in most weather conditions, for stock ZHPs. I don't think there's any advantage to any certain oil, ALA they meet LL01 and correct visocity grade, and OCI is somewhat 'normal'. Anything else is just marketing, IMO.

When I started road racing motorcycles, I learned from my friend, who's a very seasoned pro racer, that his friend at Mobil 1 said that, supposedly, 5W30 is the best oil they've ever made (unofficially). Now that's just word on the street as far as I see it but I decided to give it a go and ended up using the same brand/type in my race bikes for 4 years straight. During that time, I've been pushing my motors to extremes from chilly mornings to 100+ degree heat with absolutely no oil-related issues. I've even had a few instances of motor overheating from a water pump malfunction and still never an issue. Because I was buying this stuff by the case, I started putting the same oil into my VW Eurovan's VR6 motor and doing 10k between changes (I know, I got lazy :facepalm) with similar satisfying results. In addition, it's hard to beat $24.97/5qt at Walmart. Although I haven't yet changed the oil in my zhp, with such a proven track (:guns2) record, I see no reason to use anything different.

Why would anyone want to switch to a non LL01 oil that had no special reputation for BMWs and doesn't meet any other euro oil specs, when there are so many LL01 approved quality oils that are easily obtainable for great prices?
Was something working with whatever oil you were using before ?

They have LL01 now...
I've used mobile1 for the most part, but the car (for whatever reason) seems to run just a smidgen smoother on quartz. Quartz is hard for me to get though. So I thought this was worth a shot.
You seem not to care for it though - any specific reason?

Only because there are many European and other oils that meet specs and can be found easier and cheaper most of the time
They must have come out with a new formulation
Can you please post the link to the specific amsoil oil that meets LL01 spec?
Interested in taking a look out of curiosity.
Thanks !

Mobile 1 10-40 high mileage. I use this in my 3 BMW's & 2 Chevy's
It's ACEA A3/B3, A3/A4 API SN/SM/SL
Same as M1 0-40...which meets the BMW LL-O1 approved stuff.....
The choice of the right SAE grade is based on the climatic conditions in the region in which you normally drive your BMW.

Do you notice any more noise over the 325? Mine's not quite as smooth as the 325 was (both with m1), but when I used quartz one time it was much much closer to the smoothness level of the 325. Maybe I'm just going nuts? :dunno

Thanks for the Amsoil link!
I guess I will stick with Pennzoil Euro Ultra 5w/40 which I can get for $37 or so shipped from Amazon for 6 qts, and is also LL01. That's my summer oil.
Right now I have German castrol 0w/30 European Formula, for winter.
They're readily available most of the time, and car runs smooth on both....
BMWusa really needs to include all LL01 oils - I still haven't seen them update it to include the LL-01 Castrol 0w/40 either. (AKA Belgian Catsrol)

I currently use Rotella T6 in my E36 M3 w/ 176k miles. I am doing the valve cover gasket soon and am curious what the inside looks like. On the ZHP I am going to talk to the PO and look through the documents, but I'll probably end up with M1.
