Hey everyone!

I'm new to the BMW community. I picked up my first car on Monday - an Imola on Alcantara 330i ZHP. I'm from Montreal, QC, Canada and drove down with a friend to PA to buy the car, all in all a 36h road trip with barely any sleep. 100% worth it :D

Right now the car's sitting at a friend's cottage in VT - customs needed the original title 72h prior to crossing the border with the car, a very inconvenient requirement. Can't wait to get it home!

About the car: i got a great deal on it - it's an '03 (december build so probably sold in 04) and has just over 206k mi, mostly highway all it's life. Absolutely everything prone to failure was done within the last 40k and I've got receipts for everything: clutch, entire cooling system, fuel pump, wipers, transmission/rear diff fluids done, oil done at 201k, new tires, new lightbulbs, new starter, bushings, air and oil filters, VANOS seals, head gaskets, etc. It was in tip top shape and the interior was pretty good too; steering wheel might need a rewrap and a few plastic trim pieces (mostly the console) have some serious wear but nothing broken or overly damaged. I drove the 600 mi back to VT in one shot without a single issue.

The black 135's look better in person but I'm still not sure about them. I bought a set of used 135's on the way home (to save on import taxes) and I'll either swap the black ones to stock and flip them or just flip the stock ones - either way I'm even. What do you guys think ? Other mods are a Borla exhaust, 3.46 rear differential and ECIS CAI.

I was ready to take the risk of high mileage vs the money I saved especially with the maintenance that had been done - I preferred buying with high mileage knowing that everything had been taken care of rather than buying a 120k mi car that needed a cooling overhaul, clutch and suspension right from the start. I know these engines are bulletproof and I also want to learn how to do my own maintenance on my car.

I'm probably gonna buy the Bentley repair manual and an OBD scanner. In the meantime I'm reading the owner's manual and figuring out what's the first job I'm gonna need to do on the car just to make sure I don't miss anything. Could anyone point me towards some useful threads with maintenance information/schedules/what to watch for ?

Also if anyone needs any info re: importing to Canada, I'll be happy to help. The process has been relatively trouble-free so far apart from this 72h requirement from US customs. Hopefully it'll stay that way until it's plated in QC!

Cheers!
Alex

$8500 + like $50 for title transfer, temp tags, etc. What do you guys think ?

It's blue book but we all know that our beloved option package does command a premium. The ZAM's are really rare in Canada, I only found 2, one black/leather/auto with 75k mi for $17,000 (wouldn't touch an auto lol) and one 1000mi away US-spec black/alcantara/6spd with 120k mi for $13.5k + $300 plane ticket.

Definitely on the fence about returning to stock or keeping the black wheels. It's a hard decision :(

Welcome my friendly neighbor to the north.

My car is from State College!

Welcome to the family! I'm not normally a fan of black wheels, but the style 135's look really good blacked out against the imola. Just like Ryan's car, Lucy.

Vermont, John.

Welcome, Alexandre. Not a fan of the Black 135s. I vote to make the switch to OEM...or maybe put some Blue and White Roundels on them.

Great price too. Which roads did you take back to Canada? Some of the PA roads have some really fun bends in them.

I do have OEM caps, I just didn't put them on yet. Is there a way to do it without removing the wheels ?

Also the OEM's I bought do have some curb rash on them, while the black wheels are virtually new (PO had them finished/painted last summer). How much does it usually cost to restore them to new ? It's nothing major, I'm just a bit anal about that :biggrin

This (http://goo.gl/maps/SF5z) was my route (the silver 135s were in NYC and I bought a set of 80% tread Blizzaks with style 44's for the winter for $400 in Elmira NY).

I had a blast doing slalom between yellow taxis in Manhattan right after rush hour!!! Although the $12 toll is a bitch. The never-ending S's in northern VT were awesome as well - last time I drove on them I was in a Subaru Outback, and I had to drive at half the speed I was at in the 330 to make sure I didn't roll over lol.

You can definitely get the caps off w/o taking off the wheel. Just get something like a very small flat head screwdriver (careful not to scratch) and you can pry them off. Once you get it started from the first pry, they are very easy. You might even get away with something less rigid than a screwdriver.

non-marring pry tools. can get a set at any parts store. or just use a credit card.

I couldn't remember if a credit card worked on these or not, but that's what I was thinking.

Thanks everyone :)

On a side note, I read that the radiator is usually toast around 200k. The PO told me the car was on the original radiator. Would it be a good idea to replace it as a preventive measure ? If so, what is the part # for a manual ZHP ? (I checked on realoem but I wasn't sure what it was exactly)

I think I got a Behr on mine. It should cost roughly $200 or less.

Miles not km...I'm at 120k miles which is effectively 200,000 km.

I would do the overhaul if you're not certain what's been done.

Welcome! Car looks great and I love to hear those high miles! I'm almost to 200k myself. Car's a stunner with the black wheels, but I'm partial to red and black. :)
