DIY: Additional 12V Power sockets and USB charging. doityourself

Are you one of those people that hates to see 'cords' running all over the dashboard and center console, I definitely am. So, Strider and I came up with a plan to 'hide' 3 additional 12V power sockets in the glove compartment, along with a dedicated USB charging slot.

Parts List ....

Add-a-Circuit (Direct Wire Fuse kit)
Inline Fuse Holder (Radio Shack) holds 5x20mm fuses
6.3A 5x20mm fuse
sheet metal screw
20 Gauge wire
18-22 Gauge butt connectors
velcro
Car & Driver CD-TS Triple Socket Adaptor - USB charger unit

After removing the glove compartment, we started by prepping the triple socket adapter. Cutting the 'plug' off the end and wiring the in-line fuse holder to the postive wire.

Next, we removed Fuse #26 (Garage Door Opener) since it was switched and only came on with the ignition. We then placed the 5A fuse from slot 26 into the 'add-a'circuit' piece along with another 5A fuse. Then inserted the 'add-a-circuit' piece back into slot #26.

We drilled a small 'pilot' hole for the ground screw and attached the ground cable to it with a eyelet end on the wire.

Then we attached the socket adapter to the bottom side of the fuse block with velcro. Also using another small piece for cable/wire management.

We then reattached the glove compartment. And now this is the view of our glove compartments.

Time to complete ..... 30-60 mins.

We completed 2 installs today (1 on each of our cars) .... and plan to do the same for Strider's son, when he picks up his ZHP on Tuesday.

Elric failed to mention the best part of this DIY. The no one, but two 12v adapters that we literally blew up on the first attempt. At that point we both retreated, declared that we were NOT electrical engineers, and actually studied it and came with the missing yet critical (obviously now) step of adding the inline fuse.

Everyone's experience should be explosion free.

I'm clearly not an electrical engineer either, but why do you need the inline fuse? Don't 12v gadgets have a fuse in the plug dealy? Is it because of the USB charger part?

My best guess is that the fuse is also acting as a voltage regulator and preventing an over voltage on the USB circuit board, but I could be wrong. The electrical source was a direct tap to a switched fuse on the board too...so no other fuse was present. Someone more versed in electrical can jump in and correct me.

That is totally a SWAG, by the way.

I prefer the OEM retrofit for the rear console. Pretty pricey at $89.99 for the unit...but it comes with two sockets and is painted to match your interior :)
