All,
Tossing an idea out here to see if the family might have an interest.

Once a year gatherings aren't frequent enough for us, we need more. If the interest is there, i've been cleared hot by my house Boss to host an event here in the DC suburbs this Fall. I've asked our Boss Boss and he's up for this idea, said he'd travel back again. Mod Keith supports it fully. Mod Dane wasn't asked because he won't be allowed to do anything except sit back and enjoy a meet with out actually working it, we'll just ask him to coordinate perfect weather.

Targeting Friday, October 5th to Sunday, October 7th. With Monday, October 8th being a Federal holiday (Columbus Day) it may even give some folks a chance to recover before returning to work.

Again, if the family wants it there will be lots to plan out over the next 4-5 months but here's a tentative schedule which sort of follows last weekend's festivities:

Friday:
- arrival and cookout at my place, meet & greet & be merry
Saturday:
- morning group ride, possible stop by at a local car meet full of exotics, not enough parking for all of us
- have a friend nearby with a few acres, possibly we car park there and ferry our group over
- then find a place for a group lunch
- next we can go to audibles:
+ some may want to drive west to see the great foliage of the Blue Ridge mountains, lots of photo opps, the leaves peak in October
+ maybe can get some of the other DC area family members to lead small groups on fun drives
+ some may want to sightsee in DC, plenty to do & see in the city
+ some may want to go to my house or elsewhere to watch college football
+ some may want to go shopping, it's a big city, with big malls, and big name brand stores
+ some may want to start mods or maintenance, we can do that too
- that evening, regroup for dinner out somewhere or another cookout at the house
Sunday:
- maintenance day at the house
- catch a missed audible from Saturday, at a minimum another drive

Believe my driveway is big enough to accommodate at least a dozen cars, and I live at the bottom of a court so another 2 dozen or more can park on the street. If it hasn't rained in a few days, my backyard can hold any & all cars.

There's a great country road loop close to my house (Justin drove it), only a few miles long but probably 15-20 minute drive alone, a perfect post-maintenance checkout ride.

The house should be big enough to accommodate Marcus, Keith, and Dane with their families. Might be able to accommodate a few others on the rec room floor. There's a hotel about 4 miles away, think its a Comfort Suites, straight shot back to the house. Other DC area Mafia members might be able to take in a fellow family member too.

Will need to scout some areas for a group photo, maybe a group shot near the Potomac River, Hain's Point comes to mind since its a peninsula with water on 3 sides.

So just an idea for now, it will form up as the interest warrants. Please let me know if you're up for it.

Also, out of curiosity: Bruce, are you anywhere near a Metro stop? If there were people drinking beers but then had to get home afterward to their respective Metro-accessible locations, it would be nice to know how close/far it is.

Some photos to give you guys an idea of what we have to work with for the October get together.

My deck is 15'x12' near the grill and 21'x18' in the sitting area. We've fit over 50 people on it comfortably when we've hosted the end of season soccer parties.

My daughter's playhouse could be an extra crash pad. Its drywalled, insulated, floored, has electrical and a ceiling fan, I just run an extension cord out to the side of it to feed the electricity.

And these two items should add some late evening entertainment -- zip line & trampoline.

If it hasn't been raining for a while, previous picture shows the backyard is almost half an acre and fairly flat, but that's a slight slope to get down to it. If its dry, any & all cars will fit here. I tried 4 wide at the top of the driveway today, so know we can get at least a dozen in the driveway.

A new offering if anyone might want it. Stopped by my high school buddy's house today, he's about 10 miles away. Marty is an exhaust guy, actually he's "The Exhaust Guy", does all the custom dual set ups for the hot rodding crowd around here. He works a normal day job, this is one of his hobbies to help pay for his other hobbies. He has a large detached garage with a lift, has his own pipe bending machine, a good stock of straight pipe (which he'll custom bend) as well as an assortment of clamps and hangers, MIG, TIG, and stick welders, and of course a full compliment of tools (except for our BMW unique ones). Marty said he'd make himself available for any custom exhaust work on that Saturday of our meet. He can hang any system you may have bought, remove a resonator if you want and replace with custom pipe, weld up a leak, or replace a muffler (which you'll need to bring). Marty is a perfectionist on hanging it correctly and tucked up tight, he tests full range of the suspension to ensure no interferences. And he's just salt of the earth good people, cheap labor, plus a very interesting guy to boot.

If you might want any exhaust work done in October, list it here and I'll get an estimate from him which I'll PM to you.

I said cheap labor, so think about it. And I'll get you a price quote so no surprises, you'll know ahead of time.

Granted he and I go way back but about a decade ago I inherited a 12-13 year old Lincoln from my wife's grandmother when she passed. The car was her go to church car, only had 11K miles (we donated her other car to her caretaker). But not driven far so condensation never burned out of it and it had some rust. I turned it over to Marty and he hung a complete system from the exhaust manifolds back for $400. He changed it from a single to duals, and his price included all materials even the two Flowmaster mufflers. My then pre-teenage boys called it the Mustang Lincoln, it sounded sweet, plus improved acceleration and fuel economy. He also hung a complete catback for my son on his first car, the 323ci, the same HKS system Derbo has. Preston bought the exhaust and I had told him to be ready to pay about a hundred, and he was prepared. When Marty finished, he told Preston to have me buy him a case of beer, we bought him two and thanked him immensely.

Also trying to get another guy to commit to our meet. Sean is a small dealer (Bimmer Sales Limited) and because of that does most of his own wrenching on his inventory -- he knows all the idiosyncracies of the E46 (and my new E39 too). He's also a primo detailer, has a client book with 6-figure cars and prepares cars for shows like Carlisle. He's not cheap by any means with his detailing but thorough to the nth degree. He only does it one way, thoroughly, takes about a week to detail a car properly and his bill often crosses the 4 digit mark. But the DC area has lots of people with more money than they know what to do with, and thus Sean makes a decent living at it. I asked him about possibly hosting a detailing session at his shop and he's considering it.

Maybe i need to create a PP acct in my own name or we could just have a jar that people drop in whatever they're comfortable with when they arrive. Business trips and other things, I couldn't get to my wife's car oil change so I told her to take it to the dealer with they're newly mailed coupon. Oil change was $88 and they took 2 hours to do it while they tried to find other things. The 3 must do list was, brake fluid change (already done, they told her the fluid was dark but I replaced it with ATE Blue,), power steering flush ( on my to do list), and FCABs which I've noticed the additional play since I replaced these in the coupe. So I want to do these in October when we get together:

Yes, still planning to have a Virginia/DC area meet the weekend of October 5-7, 2012. I want to assemble some of the local guys to assist with planning the driving options, maybe have multiple options such that some can go into DC for sightseeing and others may want to cruise west toward the Appalachian mountains and their beautiful foliage. Au2bahn's wife is expecting at that time but he's going to help, Andrew volunteered, think Gary wants to help, and Dane said he'll come up early to help set up.

I'll get with these guys, talk things over, and then publish a more definitive plan soon.

Been off the net lately, otherwise occupied too much the last few months, sorry ZHP family. I took today off to take my son to college but still had 62 hours in for the first 4 days of this week. Just to confirm, the dates for our family get together are Fri-Sun, 5-7 Oct, and that's firm.

Have been a little pre-occupied of late trying to win a little contract for my employer to compete for the vehicle that will eventually replace the HMMWV for the military, the new Joint Light Tactical Vehicle (JLTV). 6 competitors and we were not one of the 3 incumbents from the previous R&D stage, but we invested $60M solidifying our design. They down selected to 3 contractors to enter the final stage of R&D on Wed and one of those 3 will win the production contract. Oshkosh Defense is now in, not big money for now (only $56M over 27 months to deliver 22 prototypes and support them thru testing) but it gives us the opportunity to win the whole enchilada, and I'm confident we will. I'm the BD guy for this venture so have been kind of busy. I set up a media day Wed to "educate"the media on our product in anticipation of a contracts award today (Fri) but the govt made their decision 2 days early. We looked either cocky or confident to have had 10 major reporters out to look at our product in advance of the contract award announcement, and then having the contract award announcement coming on the same day of our media event. Could be a bit of clairvoyance or confidence. My view is it was a little of both, confident cockiness, at least that was my intension. See DODBlog.com, AOLDefense.com for articles and a short video,I've been out of pocket so you may find other more current articles if you search on "Oshkosh & JLTV". I'm going to ask permission to bring one of these vehicles home for the Mafia get together, don't know of they'll oblige. And if not approved, no worries, we'll just drive to my office to see it & drive it.

In the interests of trying to keep this on the cheap for everyone, I've got a pretty good sized house and can easily accommodate everyone under one roof if you don't mind pitching a sleeping bag. I think my rec room is about 20'x24'plus another part of it is 13'x15', with a 70" TV for football games. There's a couch and loveseat there plus we have some extra mattresses we can pull out on the floor for the older crew to lay on and a few air matresses too. There's another couch in the family room plus lots of floor space and a couch & loveseat in the living room too, a guest room upstairs with a double that I was saving for the boss or the Germaine's. Preston is coming back from college for this weekend but I can probably talk him into giving up his room which has a queen and a full futon, its adjacent to the rec room festivities. Then there's also my daughter's 10'x12' playhouse in the backyard, think Justin originally laid dibs, its hardwood floored, drywalled, insulated, ceiling fan, heavy into the pink accents though, I don't really think we have enough folks that we'll have to resort to using it.

I'll also check with my in-laws to see if they're home that weekend cause they spend half their time down by Ryan & Kyle at Lake Toxaway, NC. If they're gone, their house is only 3/4ths of a mile away and their house is about the same size as mine. Another thought, I might move the wife & kids over there so we don't keep them up with our noise (all good), if I do that it frees up a couple more bedrooms.

Now if you love the family but still want your own space, there's half a dozen hotels within 4-5 miles of here and I'll get the details on them.

I've warned the neighbors and they're all game, some said they'll probably join us on Friday night for part of our happy hour and festivities. One special request of the family, mainly you younger guys. A young Katie Snyder may stop by, she was our neighbor's Nannie several years back and she's probably 25-28 years old from western NY and looking for "that" guy. Katie is cute as a button, not a big partier but she doesn't poo-poo on those that do, she's your built in DD if you need that. She doesn't get out much, doesn't run the bar scene since she's not a drinker, so I told her there would be some prospects here for her to check out. Oh, and she likes techie, geeky -- Botond why aren't you signed up, this might be your girl?!!!

A very wise Marine (i know, oxymoron) told me when I was in my early twenties that you can fall in love with anyone, but if you're open minded enough try to factoring in earning potential too so you're not the sole bread winner.

Crestwood,
He's cheap, likely under $100 range. I would call him to try to get a definite but I talked with him this weekend and he's dealing with a parent in failing health and trying to get her out of ICU and into an assisted nursing care facility.

Regarding request for floor space, air mattresses, etc., all is good there's plenty of room for everyone. The wide open & easily reconfigurable rec room is 20x25 plus 13x15, that's about 700 sq feet of space alone. The family room is another 500 sq ft of space too.

For the chefs who may attend, it's a big kitchen with double ovens and on the center island a 5 burner gas stove that's barely broken in cause the wife hates to cook, you're welcome to take it over and burn the dust of these seldom used appliances.

I'll get most of everything, just ask that you folks BYOB especially on the libations front. There's a fridge in the garage that will probably be packed plus I'll have coolers on the deck to hold the drinks. I'll cover Friday night's cook out with the main course, Gary may bring some unique NY white hots to add too. I'm a typical guy and don't think too much about the side dishes, my wife suggested maybe we can pick up various sides (potato salad, cole slaw, etc.) up at the local grocery store - 2 miles away. Main course for Friday is my wife's special recipe for marinade on pork chops and chicken breasts cooked on the grill. I'm the grill master. (Mouths watering now is okay, you'll see that night how damn amazing her marinade is.) If your religion doesn't allow you to eat pork, sorry eat the chicken. My Jewish neighbor loves it, enjoys it frequently and say he'll burn in hell later. If your diet doesn't like salt, you're going do die cause her marinade is salt heavy. Not sure which side of the state Manchester is located on. My in-laws made the trip from Lake Toxaway, NC in 9 hours today, in a Lexus version Prius for the love of God. If your ZHP can't beat that time, then we need to find you a Prius too.

Back in my earlier days, when I was turning 20 cars a year, Marco was my go-to guy to make them nice cosmetically. He's a bit introverted but if you're willing to talk to my little Jamaican buddy, he'll tell you everything you ever wanted to know about detailing, and he's been doing it for 25+ years.

On paint correction, how serious, how intensive? My lead in to Marco was probably 2-3 cars per day, mainly swirl mark corrections. He can do anything, bur he needs to knowin advance what you have and what you have in mind. For the local guys I would suggest picking him up on another date when it's convenient to you as Marco is totally mobile and comes to your place of convenience.

Swirls, holograms... I have black paint so it's pretty bad. It would need fair to heavy correction. I used to detail cars and know how to do correction but I don't own a buffer yet and it would be cool to support to guy depending on what it would cost

Yes Dane, I know I have a disease, but its a good disease, the Roundel causes it and sometimes you just have to scratch what itches. You know like when you have poison ivy and you know you shouldn't scratch it cause it will spread, but you do and it feels so damn good, at least for a few moments.

Don't know where the PA Duo is coming from but I can make it to Ellicottville, NY in 6 hours, that's an hour or so above Bradford, PA where the Zippo factory is located. Pittsburgh is about 4 hours, did Scranton in 5 once, Todd, PA is less than 3 hours (neighbor's cabin was there), Philly in 3 hours. I'm about 20-25 miles from the VA-MD border on I-495, a good bit longer if you take Rte 15. Rte 15 to I-70 to I-270 to I-495 is more direct, faster, no traffic lights, and against traffic on a Friday afternoon.

And that entire weekend, it's a me casa is soo casa (sic?), so everyone is supposed to make themselves at home. Just pray for no rain!

What time would the morning drive be on Saturday? I might go flying that morning, but if it's just too windy or something I'll probably come down for a morning drive. Alternatively, I could come down and chill on Saturday evening.

Alcoholics...now that I work at a liquor store, I can procure alcohol for distributor prices. All I ask is that you get me a list of beverages and I will get them for you. You pay what I pay. If you want a case or a bottle of something, I can get it for you. Only exceptions are hard to find liquors and micro brews.

See you in two weeks! :biggrin

Okay,off topic but vaguely related.

Got a text from Au2bahn this morning, we were texting last night about his wheels -- pristine 135s with almost new BFgoodrich summer tires, someone ought to pick these up at the meet in 2 weeks, if not I might buy them.

Anyway back to the off topic topic, his wife Tiffany was expecting at our May meet, due date was next Monday, well the baby came early, I believe this morning, we now have the newest youngest member of our family. I also believe they were expecting a little girl. Tiffany and baby are doing fine, Jon is tired, but he still foolishly thinks he'll be at the Oct meet. On Labor Day I was at Jon's house for a FCABs change and did invite Tiffany to join us that weekend, told her my wife would probably monopolize the new baby, she said she'll try.

Congrats Tiffany and Jon, your world just changed for the better, remind yourselves of that often on those sleepless nights.

Back on topic, I'm noticing BP is not on the list, neither are Ryan & Kyle, KPro & Sockethead - what gives guys, is free lodging too hard to fathom? Also haven't heard from the Germain's (Keith - Kayger) lately. Need some female participation to woo my wife over, she still thinks I just belong to a cult of guys vs. a family, she doesn't understand.

Appreciate the help.

This is probably going to be a last minute decision. I brought it up to Kyle last week. His reply and I quote, "It's up to you.", which means "If you make me.". We've got Mafia family coming the weekend before, so if we're not too worn out, I might just drag Kyle and Lucy up your way.

Oh no, please don't take it that way. He was really impressed and really enjoyed himself at SIG Fest. He hates riding in my car. I'm currently on the hunt for black non-power M3 seats, to help make his ass comfortable. He also isn't a fan of being so low to the ground, but there's nothing I can do about that.

I thought Kyle thoroughly enjoyed riding and driving the ///M and it is low...;) From what I have seen I would have never thought Kyle didn't like being so low....:scratchinghead

But then he loves his trucks...:) FWIT...Lucy is set up perfectly Ry :thumbsup

Ryans323i
09-22-2012, 05:25 AM
It's much more fun to drive a low car that to ride shot gun on a road trip in a low car. Kyle really enjoyed the M3, hence his support for me to get one one day! But yes, Kyle loves his trucks.

cakM3
09-22-2012, 05:38 AM
Funny you say this Ry....sometimes I ride shotgun in my car when I let BP drive it....doesn't seem to bother me abit but I can see why Kyle loves his trucks....there, you have more visibility down the road than you do when riding in a low car...

I suppose it comes down to a matter of preference....for me it's low and fast, BMW style...:) Speaking of which....taking the ///M out for a weekly spin to satisfy my speed/S54 roar thirst...;)

Ryan,
There's a guy up here who has a set of M3 non-power, non-heated, black leather bolsters & center black cloth - similar to the alcantara seats but leather is in the place of the alcantara. They were pristine, he's had them for sale since Jan, started at $900, I recall seeing him come down to $850 & $750, I'll bet he still has them. Could look up his number for you if that convinces you all to make the trip.

3ZHPGuy,
Not sure which side of the state Manchester is located on. My in-laws made the trip from Lake Toxaway, NC in 9 hours today, in a Lexus version Prius for the love of God. If your ZHP can't beat that time, then we need to find you a Prius too.

Bruce

Turns out I need to be in the Cleveland, OH area for a court date on the 2nd to try to get my security deposit back for the place we were renting. I Mapped out (http://goo.gl/maps/eKYci) the entire rout and its 1,562 mi, 27 hours round trip. Considering I'll have the wife, 3 dogs and a cat in the 330 vert, I think I still need to pass. At least with the trip to Cleveland I can stop at my daughters in Cinci so, it;'s not too bad.

Have fun, and I'll try for the next one.

Ryan,
Tell Kyle I love trucks too, have had dozens, and luckily work for a company that does the ultimate trucks. Tell him to look up Oshkosh Defense online (oshkoshdefense.com) we're driving by my office on Sat sometime to see a couple of them -- L-ATV & M-ATV, maybe S-ATV. The L-ATV has 20" of wheel travel, he'll understand. I'll promise him a ride in one or more of them, the L-ATV is a blast and street legal. The S-ATV is a freaking hot rod but not street legal, don't know if I'll take that one out.

Next week is going to be a work marathon for me, I won't be on the net very much, if at all. Don't take my absence as a bad sign for this little meet, it is definitely happening but I probably won't be able to address questions until the end of the week. The first public display of our Light Combat Tactical All Terrain Vehicle (L-ATV) and Special Purpose All Terrain Vehicle (S-ATV) will occur on Tuesday, in my backyard, with my customer, I've got the lead, it's shine or bust. My normal 50-60 hr week will look lame compared to what's coming, media has been given a heads up and they're already hounding me, working tomorrow in prep, we'll be ready.

Gary & Cody -- you guys know what "good to go" means to our kind, I definitely will be and will ensure all around/with me are too.

Looking like I wont make it ladys and gents. After amazon screwed me on my gopro order I started thinking about how much more well spent that money would be on maintaining my car, im desperately in need of brakes, and my idler pully has good and bad days, and I need to buy snow tires. So depending on how my paycheck looks tomorrow I might do that instead of the 200-300$ on the trip down. :(
Bright side is my car will be tip top for next summers fun.
