Dear ZHP family,
Well yesterday when I was driving home I noticed that when I accelerate around 2000rpm I hear the fan in the engine (not sure what the legit name is) would make a thrusting noise. It's hard to explain the noise but is just louder (or maybe even spinning faster) than before. Before taking it into the shop I was wondering of anyone else has experienced this dilemma :( thanks in advance :jawdrop

Could it be one of your pulleys?
Inspects the belts perhaps, or better yet, post a video.
Is your car an automatic?

Probably is the fan bearings failing and spinning more than it should and faster.

Fan clutch is seized.

Change it immediately. I can't stress this enough if it is the clutch.

I'm always one to err on the side of dane, but this sounds like a fan clutch seizure to me if it sounds like the video.

Why are you saying to change it out immediately, Ian? I mean I know it really needs to be changed, but what is the reasoning behind this? (just curious honestly)

When we bought the 325i, it had a bad fan clutch. The fan ended up exploding into pieces. It literally went through the hood, through hoses of all kind, and down through the bottom shield. Caused thousands in damages.

Here's some pics from the day.

3972 holes in hood
3973 fan blades gone and oil everywhere

I also don't know the newspaper trick...?

Newspaper test is to see if it rips it (seized) or stops it (also bad/weak)

Yours seized and spun the same speed as the crank which is to fast to run consistently.

The fan clutch is a viscous clutch. If working properly (not seized), while the car is running....you should be able to stop it with a rolled up newspaper.

honestly I would do the fan swap mod if you are going to replace the mechanical fan anyway. The Aux fan in front is also a source of noise on really hot days. It is the one that makes the car sound like a diesel truck. I just did mine and it is way better. Got a Bosch brand fan on ebay for $188 shipped.

Definitely...

I did a Mechanical fan to Electrical fan swap in the DIY section. This is on my Must Do list.
