The key that came with my car, which I assume it is original to the car, is starting to have trouble with remote lock and unlock. From what I understand, the key is supposed to charge while the car is running, but understandably all batteries have a limited lifespan. I just came back from a 1600 mile road trip, so it has been in the ignition for a while and should be charged.
Will the key continue to start the car once the battery is completely drained, or is some battery power required to operate the theft protection/ignition interface? I have a second key that is only a few months old and can use that, but I'm just checking to see if the other one will eventually become completely useless or will still work as a key.
Thanks
We too have a problem with one remote. My assumption was to just replace the key, as the battery doesn't seem user-replaceable.

the battery is not easily user replaceable but it is possible. http://forum.e46fanatics.com/showthread.php?t=451510&highlight=key+battery

It should still start the car when the battery is dead. My understanding is that the theft deterrent part of it is a passive antenna similar to an RFID.

That's the link I used to change my battery. Works good.

I believe the owners manual says to do this as well.
From the manual....
The key set
1 Master keys with remote control unit – these keys determine the functions of the Key Memory. Refer to page 64. You can mark the individual keys for subsequent identification by applying the colored decals that you received when accepting delivery of your vehicle.
In every master key there is an extended-life battery that is charged automatically in the ignition lock as you drive. For this reason, if you have master keys that are not being used otherwise, use those keys at least once a year while driving for an extended period to charge the battery.
