View Full Version : 100 octane fuel?

Do ours car manage 100 oct fuel stock? I dont think so, but just wondering. For some reason about five fuel stations around my home (where I usually refuel) have gone from 93 octane down to 91, but added 100 octane as a third option. And I've been told that 25 minutes from my home there is even a fuel station offering 110 octane.

I would think so. The only thing a higher octane rating gives you is the ability to not prematurely detonate under high pressure. The spark still triggers the fuel to explode at the right moment causing the same explosion. It wouldn't offer a performance gain unless you were tuned for it.

I think our fuel management system (map) would adapt to actually produce a gain.... Maybe slight though.

Cool! Might try it some day. Probably when it mixes with the 91 oct left on the tank, the mix will end up being more like a 98 oct or something like that. So i dont think it may harm the engine.

When I got tuned Jerry at eurocharged said that BMW computers adapt very well and are extremely "smart" compared to other cars.
I got tuned to 93 octane myself.

It certainly wouldn't harm. Might even feel some improvement compared to 91.

I live in Puerto Rico. We used to have 93 octane as the standard premium gasoline and 89 as regular. But about 2 months ago 93 oct disappeared suddenly; now 91 is the norm. So apparently several gas station owners came to help. lol

No, your car can not run on leaded high octane race fuel, because it is not tuned at all for the leaded fuel. If you were to put leaded race fuel in your car, it would just run like ass, you wouldn't see any gains unless you were tuned for it.

I'm with you on this one. I would assume that BMW would tune the car for 93oct at the most. If it was tuned for 100, it would adapt and have better power. If the stock DME was not tuned for 100 I would imagine the 100 octane be a waste of money.
The sunoco 100 is unleaded, the 110 is leaded. Do not use the 110.
Typically if the car pulls timing due to deposits and build up in the engine then sometimes the higher octane will help as it is harder to burn. But on many occasions I have seen 100 octane do nothing for an adaptive ECU on N/A cars (Chrysler/M-B/BMW etc).

FWIW, I have run 100 octane in both an E30 & E36 at the track, and there was no difference aside from the larger hole in my wallet. That said, perhaps the newer computers in the ZHP would make for a very small increase in stock trim.

I've run 112 octane in my E36. It ran fine, if not smoother. I've been told that there is a four horsepower difference between 89 and 93 octane.

Makes me wonder if PR just has some newfangled way of measuring it. Does it still state R+M/2 on the pumps?

Any unleaded race fuel goes up to 104 is safe for cats and o2 Sensors. 105 or higher is normally leaded and will kill your cats quick. On NA, gains are not noticeable. With F/I you can increase boost adding HP and avoid risk of detonation.

My friend has gotten it a few times, last time he told me I believe he said it was about $10 a gallon.
NOT worth it if you ask me.
