Hold your foot on the gas pedal while turning the key.

Or... Key to position 2, gas pressed half way down for 10, then try to start.

I sprayed starting fluid to see if it would start and it did, I swapped relays to make sure still no start.

Fuel pump died at 196,500 miles

Hope you don't have a full tank of gas.

I'm sure you knew it was the fuel pump when it didn't start the first time.

At least it's something you can fix and not a bigger issue!

My buddy's fuel pump went on his zhp last week. He said it was the easiest DIY ever.......

And starting fluid is amazing. My dad and i used to use it on our boat that has carburated 350's. 60% of the time it works every time.

Thanks Dane that was awesome, I got the VDO one from AutohausAZ.com (http://www.dpbolvw.net/click-4193730-10701773) it's the old part number I guess the new one superseded but I hope it works.

So, seeing as this is an easy DIY, and has a decent probability of leaving you stranded-- should we consider this a preventative maintenance item? Maybe at around 100K?

Probably not a bad idea.

I have 105K on mine, not sure if it's normal or not but the fuel pump runs for a minute or so after shutting off the car.

I call stupid shit like this too. Last week, I decided to put my extra coolant in my drug bin just "in case" I need it. Low and behold... she started leaking like a civ two days ago.

That's a great idea.

I always forget that damn space is up there.

Mine failed at 130k miles. I agree that the pump should be changed at around 100k miles.....to avoid strandage.

I'm positive it's the pump, guy at work asked if I checked for power and I said no but I want a new one regardless. I swapped the relays with the heater relay. Was Sam P/N and color has anyone done that?

Also thank you to my wonderful girl friend ( who I'm sure is reading this since she's taken notice to my talk of this site lol ) thank you for being my weekend taxi. She even helped order the parts last night.

Wanted to mention... There is a technique to temporarily get a failed fuel pump working. Essentially, you take the rear seat bottom off and expose the pump, then have someone turn the ignition on while you give the pump a whack with some thing like a rubber mallet to jar it at the moment voltage is being supplied. I've read of success in getting it to hop to life and avoid a stranding, YMMV.

Here's the post that mentions the technique... http://www.zhpmafia.com/forums/showthread.php?5413-Will-Not-Start....Aaaaarghhh.&p=122846#post122846

Cars running again, changed it out in my lunch. Kristen I haven't received the gasket yet but I am still gonna change it once it arrives. My gasket was slightly squished but I'll see if it leaks tomorrow :/

Right after buying my car I filled it up (at Costco), then it started smelling like gas inside. Researched on Internet from hotel, removed rear seat and found gas on top of pump cap. Ran to the dealer, bought a new gasket, found an indie on Yelp and next day he changed it for me, solving the problem. It appeared that the original gasket had been pinched in one spot when the PO replaced the fuel pump but it didn't leak unless you filled the tank.
