Wow...Ryan that's the first time I've ever seen your engine bay. Looks great!

Minor suggestion, get a 45 degree silicon elbow and space your Filter away from the MAF, this will help smooth air flow and get better readings.

This is on my list. I felt a difference when I first put the filter on there, and she's been doing great since so it's just hard for me to spend the $$ on the surround.

I'm flattered. Thank you.

kayger12
03-26-2012, 02:01 PM
^ It has been discussed. It seems if you ask 3 experts, you get four answers.

The best I've been able to discern is that power washing is frowned upon due to the potential for water intrusion with respect to electronics from the high pressure.

However, water from a garden hose or other source is fine provided basic steps are taken, i.e. covering the alternator with aluminum foil/plastic, not drowning the electronics control box, etc.

I've done my engine bay several times using a garden hose to rinse with zero issues.

Chris, to quote a famous Mafia member "Ask three people and you will get four different answers." I say yes, but be extremely careful near the electricals, trying your best to keep them dry.

Think about what happens when you are in a heavy rain on the highway or maybe following/passing a semi in heavy rain. The electrics are designed it be pretty waterproof. Still, I wouldn't hit things with a high pressure stream but I can't imagine that if you have everything in factory condition that you can do damage with something like a garden hose. It wouldn't hurt to cover the alternator with a plastic bag like many suggest though.

Be careful about what you use for degreaser and how long you leave it sit before rinsing. Some can damage or discolor the black pastics if left on too long or not diluted properly if recommended.

At work last year a guy sprayed some brand of aerosol citrus based cleaner on a couple of month old truck with quality Whelen brand strobes and clearance lights and most of the lenses just fell apart and crumbled in your hands. It almost looked like they had crystalized. Very strange! After that I will never use any citrus based cleaner on my car.

Last year I was doing a power steering drain and fill on my ZHP and was having trouble seeing the fluid level so I grabbed a flashlight in one hand and was pouring the ATF with the other. Of course, the bottle collapsed a bit and slipped right out of my hand and fell spout down right over the rear of my alternator/voltage regulator and dumped at least a couple of ounces right on it! I grabbed some brake clean and sprayed most of the can right on the alt/vr and general vicinity, cleaning it as well as I could, then I hit everything with compressed air.

The left front side of my engine sure was nice and shiny clean by the time I was done.:biggrin

A year later and I have yet to have any issues arise from my bonehead move. LOL

Check out the video for Adams... looks like a good way to clean an engine bay.
http://www.adamspolishes.com/t-Detailing_Video_Vol_7_Chapter_04_Cleaning_Engine_B ay.aspx

Now that I think of it, they also had a video where they just used the Adams cleaner w/o spraying the bay, but I don't see that one.

Are E46 engine bays naturally that clean or do you guys clean the crap out of them? Im only saying this because me and my father were amazed at how immaculate the engine bay was of ours. Clean engine bays here :thumbsup

Well, I think newer motors, like the M54, look cleaner than older motors with less plastic. Mine stays fairly clean all the time, of course every car wash, I do wipe it down

Typically, it's a buyer beware situation. With bodywork and painting, you get what you pay for. I've learned this time and time again.

If the labor is cheap, beware (unless it's a friend doing you a favor)...

ryankokesh
04-11-2012, 06:59 PM
Well, that's kinda the thing...

<story>
So I found this new iPhone app called "Body Shop Bids". You take pictures of your car damage, and then the app gets you quotes from shops near you. These guys came in the cheapest at $300. There was another bid for $500, and then another for $1300. I also physically went to a fourth place and got a $700 quote. Now, I know $300 is super low for the bumper and hood, but I specifically told them that I was concerned about how low it was, and I wanted to be assured that the final product would be absolutely perfect. I was told, on three separate occasions, "Yeah, there's no way you'll be able to tell anything was done". On top of that, I was told by the Body Shop Bids app company that if anything wasn't 100% satisfactory, they would make it right. Still working to that end.
</story>

So yeah, I wasn't totally surprised that this happened. I was mostly surprised about the extent to which it happened. And I just wish they would have been honest about the fact that they would do a crummy job for that price and I could have just gone to a place that charged a bit more. They also seemed sort of offended that I thought they didn't do a good job. Scary to think they thought it was okay to give me the car back in that condition...

Well, lesson learned I suppose...

Unfortunately, this.

I paid $400 to have my front bumper sprayed last year-- and that was a deal price (if I paid cash) because I know the guy.

Another shop down the road offered to do the same job for $200. Wasn't worth saving the $$$ for me to take the chance.

Sorry they completely douched you like that, Ryan. Hope you get it worked out to your satisfaction.

Nice motors everybody! Mine looks awful even after I wipe it down. Still not brave enough to wave the magic wand of water over the engine bay yet. Even though I KNOW it's perfectly safe to do so, it would be just my dumb luck that I would have a small hairline crack in the fuse box or the electronic brains of the car and it would get totally flooded and I would be on the hook for a $10k fix. All in the name of a clean engine bay.

Nice thread!!!

I found exactly what I was looking for in Miami, and my best buddy lives nearby and did a thorough inspection for me. Only 51k miles, 2nd owner, previous CPO car. Think young grasshopper, it will come to you. That "Thing" is my OEM M3 Bi-Xenon Ballast Bracket to clear the space necessary for my Cosmos V2 Intake :)

You are missing two things aside from your fourth guess.

The vacumm system stuff is missing on the passenger side?

The intake hood thing (i know technical haha) that sits over the kindey grills is missing as well

Thanks Sean! I washed the engine bay once around 6 months ago with some degreaser and then I rinsed it using my garden hose with a light stream of water. Then I turned over the engine left it running and dried as much as I could (of course I didn't get the alternator wet), then I used some 303 aerospace protectant on the black plastics to give it that nice low gloss sort of matte look.

Since then I just use a slightly damp rag and wipe my engine every once in awhile and it stays nice and clean. A little bit of work can really go a long way!

^ Me 3 - it scares the heck out of me :( so I may just do some 'surface' cleaning for now....

my planned strategy:

-mix some engine degreaser and a few sprays of Sonax wheel cleaner and water in a bucket- (dilute it a bit),
-then soak some rags in it, wear gloves and go over all possible surfaces without 'drenching' anything - luckily my engine is pretty clean to begin with.
-Then dry,
-spray Einszett Tiefenpfleger or 303 or similar and wipe clean...

Thoughts? does Mafia approve?

i hosed off my engine bay once, i got so paranoid halfway into it i aborted when i saw electrical connectors getting wet. nothing bad happened, but it still made me nervous.

Rovert
04-09-2013, 09:42 AM
When i detail my car i usually put it on the street before dumping water into my engine bay. The connectors are weather sealed and can handle it. The engine bay is tougher than you think. The ECU and all plastic covers are sealed up too The only place I don't shoot water into is the very front on each side where the headlights are but everywhere else is fair game. My engine bay gets a rinse down 4 or 5 times during the summer. Been doing it for 8 years and never had a problem. One hint is that I drive the car around the block to keep the engine bay warm when i do it if I'm not going out after. But usually I always find an excuse to go out driving 20 minutes after I let everything drip off for a full official drying. :D
