so... I live in IL which requires emission testing.

I'm wondering if this summer if I look for exhaust if I can pass emissions properly (in conjunction with a tune that helps with the computer readings for catless headers) with:

this:http://www.ebay.com/itm/BMW-3-Series-E46-2001-2006-325i-330i-Performance-Header-/190654277674?pt=Motors_Car_Truck_Parts_Accessories&fits=Model%3A330i&vxp=mtr&hash=item2c63e1682a

Does IL emissions testing include a tailpipe sniffer, or only an ODB2 check?

Both I believe

If those Magnaflow pipes include O2 bungs after (or in) the cats and your post-cat O2 sensor wires will reach (or you extend them), then in theory you should be able be able to pass visual, OBD/CEL, and tailpipe tests. You'd want to make sure the car is well warmed up before the test to make sure the cats are at full efficiency, since they are further from the engine.

On E46fanatics there were some guys who put in headers with cats in the exhaust. Some were fine and others still had the CEL coming on occasionally. Not sure why, could be their aftermarket cats weren't as efficient as OEM, or putting O2 sensors further back made the seem less responsive to the DME. I think there's also a Magnaflow header/manifold that includes cats close to the OEM location but is supposed to flow better than stock.

I won't get a CEL - the tune will kill that for me. I'm more concerned with the sniffer test and POSSIBLY a visual.

So you say I'd need a post O2 bung on these to be made huh?

there are magnaflow high flow catted headers but they're $1000 for the set, this set up would only run me about $500-600

Seth I'm here in Chicagoland as well and have ebay headers ready for installation. I planned on running them without any cats and the eurocharged tune just see how bad the smell is. If it becomes unbearable I will install cats

Yeah that was ultimately what I wanted to do also but I know emissions will be an issue as an 04 will probably be called in for testing soon. I don't even care about the smell, had catless downpipe in my 135i and it never bothered me.

Well here in Joliet they dont do sniff test or any visual inspection for odb2 cars. so im sure i can get away with it. if i fail the emissions test i'll just install the cats

I wonder if thats by county or something. I could swear I remember Cook county hooking up a sensor to the exhaust pipe.

anyone know where to look to find out?

Well here in Will County there is no emissions test for OBD1 cars anymore as far as i know. But i thought that was for all of IL. I've owned a few S13s and never had to take them for emissions the last couple of years. My brother has owned an obd1 car for about 2 years that he uses for work and hasn't been asked to do emissions either. OBD2 cars are only a quick plug test from my experiences

yeah I know that I just could swear they plug the tool into OBDII and a sensor in the tail pipe - rev it a few times and give you a thumbs up or no go.

I've spent hours reading that thread before. I've also spent even more time reading more recent threads that have spawned from that one. Long story short. It doesn't work. Best method is the one you were going with. Install cats further down with software

I'd rather not have cats at all though. :)

Lol well we can go cat less with software. Take emissions test. If we fail the test, we resolve the issue with cats and take the emissions test again. Problem solved
