Oh where at? I wanted a white zhp..
Funny I think the HKS exhaust is too quiet for me! It's louder than the stock zhp exhaust but it doesn't drone at freeway speeds. It definitely screams performance package. It's a compromise of full on performance and the practicality of daily driving. After a long track day at Laguna Seca, the burnt edge tips turned full purple. It looked really stupid so I painted the muffler flat black for a more discreet zhp look.
I'll get interior pics when I get to my computer.

I'm on Noriega 34th. say hello if you ever see me!
I decided to relocated the DICE kit to the sunglass holder today since I recently got an iphone and the DICE kit in the glovebox didn't let me check my phone if I wanted to play music from it.
I started by taking apart my glovebox dice kit and taking apart the center console.

http://i.imgur.com/22xxBTql.jpg
She's old but she still works my iphone 4s! sorta..
At first I thought I could use the hole on top of the sunglass holder and not have to drill a brand new hole in the back of the holder but got in the way of the center console bracket that it snaps into.

It's not that difficult depending on your options on the car.
There is a 10pin connector to the rear view mirror that is labeled. Pin 3 is power and Pin 10 is ground. Pin 3 can be tapped to a 12V ignition source for the optional homelink connector up in the maplight area. If you have SOS like I did, you need to depinn pin 4, 5, 6, 7 or else it will boil the Electrochromatic fluid in the mirror..
The mirror itself is going to be hard to find for cheap. it will be a rear view mirror with options EC/GTO/Compass. It's basically premium package E90 or E92 mirror. You cannot use a E93 one. I'm not sure on E60s because some of them have highbeam assistant in the mirror as well.

sorry I stand corrected. Ty for the correction. Here are my options from the factory. Though the bluetooth part is incorrect. The main important one is still ZHP :)

Today I ended up swapping out my ZKW headlights for AL headlights.
http://i.imgur.com/hc1vpPOl.jpg
Couple notes: ZKW Lower mounting bracket is different than the AL lower mounting bracket. Nothing a dremel couldn't fix. The red portion is not present on the AL mounting bracket but it is there on the ZKW.
https://img.skitch.com/20111227-menne4nrdqi4qwc4w9rmua6fu1.png
After swapping I am now left with a blurrier cutoff but brighter output on the floor.
No output pics, but I am thinking about swapping the ZKW lense onto the AL projectors now.

Got around to getting this installed. Took less than 10 minutes to finish up!
I ordered the first aid underseat compartment. Here are the part numbers not including the first aid kit contents:
First Aid Box 52 10 7 044 958
First Aid Box Bracket 52 10 7 045 018
First Aid Box T30 Screw 07 14 9 169 302 (need two min. There are 3 holes)
These screws are short enough and will allow sport bolsters to be adjusted without getting caught on the screws.

derbo

I think total cost after everything was less than $30bucks at my employee cost without the first aid kit. Dealerships will have to special order it, but they are available through the dealership. Those torx screws will save you a lot of hassle since most threads I've found on them do not state these two screws. I found them through the parts catalog at work.
ecstuning seems to be selling the box and bracket for $30 and the screws are less than $4. Their full kitf for $75 includes the kit contents.
http://www.ecstuning.com/BMW-E46-330i-M54_3.0L/Search/First_Aid/
best thing is, you can install one on either seat. The driver side has the available mounting holes as well. :)

Dane, we run non-stock size brakes in the modified class. Very few mods are allowed to keep you in the stock class
From our rules:
We class cars with a simple system of model, year and modifications. We consider a BMW to be in Stock class if it has only factory equipment. In addition, Stock classes permit any size wheel and tire; non-stock shock absorbers, bushings and strut braces; any brake pad material (brakes must be stock-size), any air filter or cold air intake or catalyst-back exhaust; and only naturally-aspirated cars may use aftermarket engine management software. Tires must be 140 treadwear rated or higher in Stock classes. ANY other performance modification, including but not limited to springs, “R”- compound tires, and engine software for turbocharged/supercharged cars, puts the car in Modified.

Ah, thought so. SCCA is a little different. Everything must be stock. Only permitted things are: brake pads, r-comps, dampers, wheels (as long as stock dimensions & offset). I think front sway and cat back exhaust is permitted, but don't recall off-hand. Quite stringent!

yeah, our class system is kinda funky but I like it. Historical racing classification (2002's) is ridiculous, I'm not gonna even waste my time trying to get the 2002 to work within those classes so I'll just run it (when restored) at BMW CCA in the 4-cylinder class.
Here is a breakdown of our classes:
4C ---- ALL 4 cylinder BMW models (except E30 M3)
6S ---- Stock 6 or 8 cylinder BMWs up to 295 stock horsepower
6M ---- Modified 6 or 8 cylinder BMWs up to 295 stock horsepower
TS ---- Stock 6-8-12 cylinder BMWs over 295 stock hp, M cars before 1994
TM ---- Modified 6-8-12 cylinder BMWs over 295 stock hp, M cars before 1994
MS ---- Stock M cars, 1994 - present
MM ---- Modified M cars, 1994 - present
MC ---- ALL R-class MINI Cooper models
X ---- ALL non-BMW or MINI models
G ---- Gold Class for all Instructors, opt-in drivers, and cars with slick tires

Swapped out the stock zhp motor mounts and put in new e92 m3 motor mounts.

Install some RE Transmission Mounts.

Install RTAB Shims from RE.
Also replaced my fuel pump and valve cover gaskets.
Last by not least tried some new shoes, and got a nice new alignment ;)

17x9 +42 APEX Arc8 with hankook 255/40/17. It rubs pretty bad on the swaybar when turning the wheel a bit. I'm not sure if that is 100% lock or not. Strut clearance is barely 3mm from the tire to the strut. Good thing this wheel isn't mine cause I am seeing a hell of a clearance problem LOL.
New alignment specs right now:

Toe -0 05'
Rear
Camber -2
Toe 0 11'

I love this car. Talk to me about the Ground Control/Koni setup. What spring rates did you go with and how are they on the street? I'm leaning toward a GC/Koni setup but mine will be 100% street car and no track time, so I'm trying to figure out that ceiling for spring rates and comfort on the street.
derbo
02-14-2012, 11:37 AM
I am using their Street/Touring setup. It is selected with sport ride springs. The spring rates are 375lbs F 430lb R. As far as daily driving on the street is incredibly comfortable. Large potholes are going to be a little jarring but thats with all lowered suspension. It's one of the most comfortable rides I had in a coilover setup. It does leave a little room for improvement on the track as it is a little too soft.

Thanks! That is good to hear (for me) as if it were just right on the track it would be too stiff for my needs as a daily driven family hauler.

I have the same 375/430 GC spring rates and it is comfortable on street except for speed bumps, which are jarring, or on roads being prepared for repaving. I've only had it on for 9 days so haven't hit any big potholes yet. From my one track day on it, yeah I would like slightly higher spring rates for track but am afraid higher rates would beat me up on rough roads. I'm thinking of buying a set of 440/550 lb/inch springs to try them out because now spring replacement is so easy! GC sells them new for $59 each ($236 a set) or sometimes you can find them used from somebody who went with even stiffer springs.
I've can't compare to any other coilovers or aftermarket E46 springs.
Hermes: The CCA Golden Gate chapter uses different AutoX classing rules than LA/SD. They have a point system.
derbo
02-14-2012, 02:53 PM
Originally I was planning to change my spring rates as well. I would've only wanted to go 450 500. But the cost of extra springs didn't warrant enough worth for me to change over. My car is daily driven and I probably put 20k on these coilovers without a problem. They are comfortable enough to drive my grandma in softest setting. If you look at my track pics in the first post, you can see the rear squats dramatically. I'm not sure if this is because the dampening is too soft (max stiff setting) or if the springs are too soft or a combination of both.
Overall I'm happy with my setup. I can get about -3.7camber in the front ma should I ever need it.

How'd you get your front seats out without scratching/damaging anything while coming out, all the while keeping from breaking your back?
I've done it on my E30 a few times and ended up nearly hurting my back from the way I was doing it (seat was heavy). It was easier though because it was a coupe; longer door frame. I can't imagine doing it an E46 sedan... any insight would be great! I imagine the E46 seats to be exponentially heavier than my E30 seats...

B,
I unbolted the 4 17 bolt/nuts and undid the seatbelt bolt on the chair. I also unbolted the seatbelt latch and undid the yellow harness to seperate the motor power harness. I tilted the seat backwards towards the back seat. I had help navigating the seat through the rear seat but that's how I got it through!

I'm similar to this, I only have to slightly move my head to see someone almost directly beside me. I can barely see my door handles in my mirror. In fact, I recently moved them out more so I actually can't see my door handles by just millimeters.
For me, it was best to be somewhere like a traffic light where you're stopped, and you can see cars going by you as the pull up to the light in a shorter lane. You can see them through the rear, then the side, then that small spot just next to you and you can adjust accordingly.

I swear I thought I replied to this. I wanted to change my final drive to 3.46 to get a little more uhmph out of the car. According to Jim at Performance Gearing a 12% increase in acceleration. If I am replacing my differential, I might as well get a LSD along with it because I see that in the future and I do not want to do twice the work. It will definitely help with lift-off decel and accelerating out of a corner like Turn 11 you mentioned. Turn 11 I tend to get the driver side rear tire to light up a bit if I am too soon on the gas.
Thanks for all the comments guys :)

got some new springs for my coilovers :D Installed so easy along with the reinforcement plates as well.
Currently the ride height is 575mm front and 565mm rear. I will lower the front a little more to get back to the same ride height if I am not happy with the stance of the car in the daytime.
Currently the car rides very nice with the new stiffer spring rates of 448/560. The swift springs actually take the bumpers better than the eibach springs and seem to be on par with the little bumps. Larger bumpers there is a definite difference in feel. Since my tolerance is relatively high, its not too bad and on the freeway it felt great with the difference of 100lbs between front and rear vs the old 55lb difference.
Rovert
03-29-2012, 11:47 PM
I wonder what my spring rates on KW V2's are..... I sometimes feel like they can be too harsh but I think that's more the shocks. I never set the rear and left mine at default, but I put my front to soft for more city driving and to dial in more oversteer which I'm more comfortable with than understeer.
LivesNearCostco
03-30-2012, 08:49 AM
I think most of the KWs have progressive rate springs, but I don't know how much they differ between V1, V2, V3 and ClubSport.
Derbo, springs look nice. Do they have fewer or thinner coils than the Eibach/GC springs? If so that would give you a little more bump travel/compression without hitting coilbind.
derbo
03-30-2012, 09:03 PM
Swift has less coils to give more usable stroke and provide enough distance to minimize coil binding. I noticed the car now drives like the old setup on full stiff dampening. I'm currently at 1 turn from full stiff in the front and 1.5 turns from full stiff on the rear

Not happy with my ride height and I'll play with the adjustment more. Old height was 570mm front and 565mm rear. Right now it's 580 and 565mm. Looks a little funny but I'll adjust it when the springs settle a bit. Looks like one turn down for the front and one turn up for the rear will do the trick!
Edit: fiddled with the height and ended up with 570 front and 570 rear. Now we are talking!

04-09-2012, 09:17 PM
Well it's pretty much built already and has very few cosmetic mods. A previous owner did RCR tails, clear front corners, yellow fogs, and modified side marker lights plus tint. My biggest cosmetic mod was the roof rack (now removed) and scraping up the bottom of the front bumper cover. The only things I've worked really hard on are maintenance and suspension, and the suspension is basically what you have, with a different brand of springs. I guess I could do a retroactive build thread.
My main concern is when is my next track day, how will the GC coilovers do with the stiffer springs, and will my driving be any better than last time?

Thanks! I'm not a fan of the tow hook mount since when going track racing you are required to have your towing points available in case you go off the track. Having a license plate hooked on the front would be a hassle every track day.

I got the ducts installed. Not as clean as I hoped for the lower undertray cuts.
The ducts are now routed to my factory zhp ducts from the side. Because I have UUC sway bars, the ducting had to be crushed a little to clear the sway bar. This won't pose too much of a problem. I did notice a little rubbing on full lock, but I expected this already. Two pics will do for now. :)
I need to get some chicken wire mesh to put over the ducts to prevent really large objects passing through.

Back to the OEM M3 Strut bar. Easier for me to adjust my dampening since the CF bar gets in the way since my strut is offset and pointing towards the engine. It sure doesn't look as nice but at least it helps with preventing mushrooming and still does its job as a strut bar.

Those are for the newer 3-series and will not fit your e46. Our strut bars have circle-shaped mounts on the ends about 6" in diameter instead of just a straight piece.
They do make that brace for our cars though, I think it may just be a different one than you listed above.

Wait...Steve is BigPatsFan????? OMG I've been using that webpage for almost 2 years haha!
Yup, that's me!
I bought that domain name back in 1999 during my senior year of college for an IT web design project. I believe that I registered the name and hosting space and paid 5 years in advance through a friend who worked at an internet start up (pretty sure I paid nothing for both--LOL).
I initially built the site as a fan site for the New England Patriots for the class. After I graduated college a few buddies of mine and I bought a 1974 Winnebago for $500, painted it Pats' colors and used it for tailgating games. We kept an archive of our drunken escapades on the site--it was really meant just for us. As we started advancing in our careers, it was decided that we should take it down (drunken photos with stories of passing out at tailgates isn't the stuff you want your boss to see).
Anyhow, when I started putting together DIY's and needing web hosting space for pictures, i just used the old domain name and space I already had. By the time that it was up for renewal (and they wanted to charge me this time) there were too many links out on the 'net that I didn't want to break, so I just stuck with it.
Glad to hear that someone is still getting use out of it though! I mostly just use it as a dumping ground for car pics etc now...
Screen cap of the original site. There was some Macromedia Flash spiinging footballs ont he left, but the version is so old it won't run on the new version of Flash. LOL

Compared to the on camera mic you will pick up voice very well, its is a directional mic though so anything behind the person you are interviewing you will still hear, but while still picking up that persons voice very clearly. It also has 2 volume settings for how loud you want to pick up that person voice. its a pretty compact mic and for the price, size, etc I think it does an amazing job. You could also replace the "oem" wind sleeve for a "dead cat" and get better results and more pro look. I really like Sennheiser and have also used their lavaliere mics Hope that helps Trevor.
edit: I forgot what I liked most about this mic, it takes a AAA battery and last forever.

Sounds like a tough call. Would you be building the m3 for the track the same as the zhp? I think everything would cost a bit more on the m3 and would take a pretty sizeable chunk of change to make fast above what it would on the zhp. Either way, you can't go wrong.
derbo
05-31-2012, 08:49 PM
The M3 would definitely become a daily track car. I would need to invest in a fair amount of stuff to get it to the level my ZHP is.
-Brakes (probably would've been stoptech all around)
-Suspension (probably AST4100 for starters)
-Rims/Tires (Unsure but it would've been 18s)
-all the preventative maintenance.
The car looks like there has been no record of Inspection II being performed and being an M3, valve adjustment is needed as well. Water pump looks original as well and the clutch is getting thin.
I decided to pass for something I really want. The price of the M3 was low but it just wasn't exactly what I wanted in an M3. I want a ZCP :)
On a sidenote:
-Oil Filter Housing Gasket
-Crankcase Ventalition System
These will be addressed soon! :)
New rims may come in before July 8th Laguna Seca. I haven't decided yet.

how can you tell the clutch is getting thin? THe grab point is higher than normal?

It was getting high, as well as when redlining the car, it was starting to slip. :(
The car was a trade-in at the dealership. I would've gotten it at trade-in cost + tax/fees
The more I think about it, the only reason I wanted that car was for the extra power and LSD.

Ahhh ok. My clutch still grabs near where I set my clutch stop years ago. Maybe just a tad higher. But no slipping. I can still launch at 3K and it just takes off like a stinky pig. I want to get to at least 200K before it shows signs...I'm at 150K now on the original clutch. :D

The clutch catch point is near the top on the M3 I was checking out. It clearly had a disc with very thin material left. Being that there are plenty of hills around here in San Francisco, it is assumed the old asian lady didnt drive the clutch properly. Better than some people who kill a clutch in 2800 miles and come back yelling why the transmission revs but doesnt move. :rofl

When I was in San Fran...I tried my car on a hill that said "DO NOT STOP". It wasn't very nice on my clutch and I am very good with it. :( I had to start at 3K and floor it as I let the clutch out just to move forward....ouch!!

The handbrake technique is where this comes into play but even then, clutches wear out fairly quickly here in the city. It's heartbreaking hearing some people riding the clutch going uphill haha. I've learned to kind of pump the clutch if I know I have to slip the clutch. Speaking of, my clutch is getting thin too. :\

How does pumping help on steep San Fran hills? I'm thinking that just helps ride and unride the clutch for a longer time until you're fast enough to release the clutch?
Yeah I am used to hooking up my clutch at 600RPM on the flat. It was heartbreaking to try this on a super nutso hill...but I needed to know what it was like. Poor tranny.

Thats what I meant, disengaging and engaging the clutch enough times till the car starts rolling. Rarely do I have to do this cause I try to have a RUNNING stop AKA a california stop sign stop. Only a few hills in the city need that kind of torture. It's late. I'm heading to bed LOL.
