Terra sent me a sw3.6 LCM with the sw4.5 software. I just installed it today and NCSexpert acknowledged it was a 4.5sw LCM :) Kudos to you Terra!

When I was pulling the LCM wires out, I noticed the snake cable was stucked on the inner metal dash portion. It pulled the wires out of the snake cable and the metal dashboard cut one of the wires. Needless to say, a simple swap ended up being a wiring job on my part. :facepalm

Anyways now I have a true 4.0 LCM laying around that will go on sale soon. :)

Last weekend I took apart my headlights to swap out the AL lenses for zkw lenses. Unfortunately the auto level motor c clip broke on the passenger side. :facepalm

I'm searching for the connector and I think Dario has one for me. Hopefully. :)

I want to build my car to a SPEC E46 suspension setup.

Suspension

MCS single adjustable non-remote reservoir shocks with 750/850 springs.
Front camber plates and rear shock mounts w/ spherical bearings.
Polyurethane/Delrin control arm bushings.
Sway bars must be steel, non-bladed, using stock mounting location.

I support this decision. Too bad the ZHP is not allowed in spec e46, but still a good package. I don't know if you can do the exhaust or not (thinking you mentioned emissions issues if you went that route) but it's LOUD, even with the resonator test pipe. I would not DD that setup

I would not be able to pass emissions visually (probably could fake the readiness monitors) so I rather not.

California has a sound limit of 95dB and it would totally not work for me. I think I will be fine with the TSE3 for now. The spring rates are a bit high for street use so I may bump it down 100-200lbs.

It will be fun! I am planning to drop an S54 into the car in the future so it will be fun with the spec e46 setup. :)

I'm still a little torn on the clear vs amber debate but I'll rock the OE clears for awhile. I might do a change to the rims (ie. silver rims) to compliment the clears better. Unsure what rims will be good but it maybe CSL rims for the sake of OE-ness

LOL BP, I know I know. My priorities have been focused on household upgrades instead of car stuff. I have to say, driving the 18miles up and down sure gave me a damn smile when i was doing it. I was actually giggling at some of the hairpins. I definitely think the 30mm front sway bar was a good choice.

DSC Stage 1 definitely feels like it's the M Track Mode for the ZCP and I'm very happy with that.

Any chance whatsoever you can re-upload to imgur, etc? I would love to see the progression, and I know I'm not the only one clicking on your build thread.

Also, regarding your GC setup, can you post some details on the coilovers? Is it their Special Koni kit? Some other GC kit? Konis and Swifts?

Yea. I noticed.

Unfortunately some of those pics were upload to Skitch years ago and I don't have local copies before they got bought out by evernote and took the server down. I pieced as much as I could for now.

I have this setup paired with a set of swift springs I purchased down the line to up the rates.

I am using their Street/Touring setup. It is selected with sport ride springs. The spring rates are 375lbs F 430lb R. As far as daily driving on the street is incredibly comfortable. Large potholes are going to be a little jarring but thats with all lowered suspension. It's one of the most comfortable rides I had in a coilover setup. It does leave a little room for improvement on the track as it is a little too soft.

I have the same 375/430 GC spring rates and it is comfortable on street except for speed bumps, which are jarring, or on roads being prepared for repaving. I've only had it on for 9 days so haven't hit any big potholes yet. From my one track day on it, yeah I would like slightly higher spring rates for track but am afraid higher rates would beat me up on rough roads. I'm thinking of buying a set of 440/550 lb/inch springs to try them out because now spring replacement is so easy! GC sells them new for $59 each ($236 a set) or sometimes you can find them used from somebody who went with even stiffer springs.

I've can't compare to any other coilovers or aftermarket E46 springs.

Hermes: The CCA Golden Gate chapter uses different AutoX classing rules than LA/SD. They have a point system.

How do you guys feel about these spring rates now? Still running the same rates? Thinking about GC myself. Usage is summer street, 2x AX, 1x HPDE, foothill runs, and maybe 1x Dragon trip in the next 12 mos.

Also, thanks Derek for re-uploading the pics you had. I appreciate that.

No problem Jay. If you wander through the plethora of posts, I switched over to swift springs 8k/10k (448/560lbs/in). The 375/430 spring rates were too soft for me. I personally think my 448/550 swift spring setup feels somewhat better on bumps than the eibach 375/430 springrates I had earlier. You can call Ground Control and see what they suggest to you. 375/430 was suggested to me because I told them I was doing 2-3 HPDE and 99% daily driving. I switched over to 448/550 swift springs after I realized I was getting faster and the spring rates were not stiff enough for the track.

I blame you guys and my brother as well. I've been wanting to ditch the Prius for awhile and with my new job, it made it easier to want to ditch the car. The Prius does it's job well at getting that MPG but..everything else was pretty subpar..

Overall I am happy with my purchased. I have a few grips with the car..why doesn't it have parking lights option? its just on n off for the lights..

The NAV screen is dinky..but a Parrot RBN6 may solve that. ;)

Yes! I live by the Pacific East Mall and unfortuantely the ZHP sits in my parent's garage in Sunset of SF. It makes it hard to bring out the ZHP for a spur of the moment drives.

I've been commuting happily to Sonoma County Office of Education (near Sonoma Airport) for about 2 months now. I got the TDI 6/20/15 with 504xx miles and now it has about 57xxx...lol The commute isn't too bad. To work: 1hr10min. Going home: 1hr30min-2hrs :( but the job is fun being a Network Administrator. :)

As for the TDI:
I put 3m Crystalline 40% Tint all around since I'm going to be in the sun. for Mods, I already threw an Audi S3 shifter lever in it (cheap OE short shifter) and did some VAGCOM coding which is similar to PAsoft. I got a euro lightswitch coming and hopefully my friend upgrades his suspension soon so I can get his hand-me-down VW Drive gear (their bmwperf equiv) springs. Overall I've been happy with it and I do wish I had black headliner like the GTI/ZHP.

For the ZHP:
The ZHP was fun last weekend when I took it out in the heat for a cruise. Man, that bucket seat makes a difference. The only issue is the seat is off-centered and I have mentioned previously in this thread to get a set of Motion Motorsports mounts to fix the issue. I haven't had a chance to deal with it yet. As far as what's new on the ZHP, my stock alcantara seat went to "Alex's Upholstery" in Walnut Creek. I gave him the rear bolster cover I bought from Dane and hopefully he can fix that badboy. He said it was going to be tight but hopefully it works. Alex is going to call me next week to give me an update.

Dang. And here I am complaining about my commute being 18 minutes lol.

I wish my commute was 18minutes! My commute is about 57 miles one way. Luckily it is reverse traffic in the morning so I can get to work at speed (majority of the time) I do have to cross the Richmond Bridge everyday which is an ugly 2lane bridge. I spend about $95 per month on toll alone ($5.00 per day if I go Richmond Bridge, if I go visit the parents in SF, its $6.25 for Golden Gate Bridge.). Luckily diesel has been staying around $2.99-3.05/gal and I get about 42-43mpg on the car and my monthly diesel bill is roughly $250-300 depending on my misc travels.

In hindsight, I know BP would mention something here, but I'm glad I got rid of the Prius. Do I regret buying the Prius? A little but practically it made sense when I made a commute from Richmond to San Jose (51miles) for my old job. It was 1hr to get to work, 2hrs to go home: bumper to bumper traffic. The Prius shines in heavy traffic and I think that decision made sense at the time. On top of that, back in 2013, I wanted a 2012+ Golf TDI with xenons and sunroof meant that car was out of my price range at $26-28k. 3 years later my commute is definitely longer but its a lot more free on the freeway so I think the TDI was a good decision now that the prices have dipped a bit.

Planns for it have been laid out in a google drive spreadsheet. :)
https://goo.gl/EprBb8

I've been busy and haven't had alot of time to visit the forums as often as I could before. I'll be popping up time to time.

Back to the ZHP:
I've been itching to mod it but I think the car sits pretty well at this point and it just needs to be maintained and driven. The car currently has 132,888 on the odo. Flashback to 1 year ago august 2015, it had 131,055 miles. . :facepalm

A few items I think will be beneficial:
-Motion Motorsports Side Mounts
-Schroth Quick-Fit Pro
-Dr Vanos Anti Rattle kit (or Besian)
-Radiator
-ZHP LCAs
-City Lights? idk about this one..

Sweet, you went to Alex's? He's a good guy, (well I have never met him, but my dad had some work done from him and I was really impressed).

And yeah I know where that is, close to best place ever. COSTCO!

My dad did the heavy lifting and dropped off the seat and picked it back up from Alex. It cost me $245 and I have yet to see the actual repair. He said the rear bolster BARELY fit the full repair since I had a full banana side to replace. He was able to get most of it and I will check it out tomorrow when I visit my parents. I'll post pictures.

yea pretty much, just wait until the storm dies. That is a good read.

I always noticed my car kinda was "stinkier" than the BMW diesels. I always wonder how they were able to make the NOx low enough to pass without the use of the AdBlue Urea.

Cheating VW TDI > Prius, any day of the week.

The TDI was the original car I wanted back in 2013. Back then, the 2012 "LCI" update was too expensive to get. With the change of my commute to go North with less traffic, the Prius was pretty boring on the open road. I made reasons to trade it and buy the TDI.

At least I didn't get any hate notes from idiots saying my VW was cheating yet...

Will do.

I just did a brake flush, raised the rear one coil thread, swap my brake pads to track pads. I modified my rebound dampening to be 75% stiff up front and 100% stiff in the rear. It's pretty jarring on bumps on the street but it seems pretty good on turns. Will have to try different settings when I go to the track.

I hope it doesn't rain.... haha.

I would be very mad if my rear main seal is out as I replaced it back in 2012 when I did my clutch. The OPG looks like a pain in the ass to do at home. I'm almost at the point where I want to pay someone to do it. This is a larger task that I don't have the tools or want to buy.

Will you fabricate this yourself, or do you have a drop in one you plan to use?

I'm leaning towards the VAC baffle.

https://store.vacmotorsports.com/vac-motorsports-oil-pan-baffle-spec-e46-p3531.aspx

It requires welding regardless so I may get my buddy to do it for me. I'm not sure what I want to do yet as installing the baffle will increase some downtime with the pan off.

Either way, this Saturday is Laguna! :) I'm excited. It's been a year since I've gone to any track and I just bought an xbox one to play some forza to hype myself even more. :) I think the biggest thing is the ZHP has seen some neglect since I changed multiple jobs that involved alot of commuting. Saturday I participated in a Open Track Day at Laguna Seca Raceway. It's been 3 years since I last came here and I had a few modifications since then.

The biggest changes :

-M3 Rear End
-30mm Front Sway Bar
-Stoptech Brakes
-Downsize from 18s to 17s

Overall the day was pretty awesome. It was cold so my Star Spec Z1s were not loving it at all. 1st session, T3 was showing a small river patch and my group was the first session out at 9am. I watched the row of cars ( I was probably 5th or so in line) and as we all left the pit to hit T3, we all started drifting out cause of the little wet spot right at the apex. It was hilarous and fun cause all the cars suddenly dropped to 7/10ths of what that first initial acceleration was. Anyways I hit my personal best at 1:49.17 besting my old PB of 1:50.xx 3 years ago. There was some learning to do as the gear ratios were far shorter and I could be up one gear from my previous outing. Anyways, on with the pictures and videos!

5:30am Drive to Laguna. 2 hour drive on my own there. It was nice and crisp weather. 34F. You can see how short the gearing is on the M3 Rear end. :)

It really depends who is hosting. SpeedSF is a bunch of track buddies I know so usually there is a few people with a fair amount of tools that I can borrow if I need be.

A couple things I would do prior is follow their tech inspection sheet and make sure the car is good shape for the track. I usually do a brake fluid flush and double check everything when I take off the wheels.

As far as gear to the track:

Canopy
Tools
Jack/Jackstands
Extra brake fluid
Extra oil
Extra coolant/distilled water
Gloves
Rags
Tire inflator/gauge
Sometimes I bring 2x Rear 135M wheels but I've been lazy as of late.

There isn't really much to bring except a small things that will help ease any minor issues.

It's a known problem that the floormounts for race seats to offset the driver by a few inches to the left. It leaves an awkward position where the center of the steering wheel is not lined up with your crotch. The MM mounts have slotted holes to allow for better adjustment and moving the bucket seat back towards the transmission tunnel. This will HOPEFULLY fix the offset I've been having.

Thunderhill built an extension to the existing track 2 years ago. THill west can be a separate track or combined together with East to become a full blown 5-Mile track. I believe that makes this track the longest one in North America. THUNDERSCHLEIFE

Update:

I swapped my Stoptech Street pads front/ OE Rear into the car and replaced my Recaro side mounts w/ motion motorsports side mounts. It was a pain in the but to install with the slider bracket because of the way the bolt sits inside the slider. I was able to move the recaro closer to the transmission tunnel to help fix the off-centered steering wheel. Hopefully this will help a bit. I will be driving the car to work this week and throwing in about 570 miles in to exercise the car and get rid of the gas sitting in the fuel tank.

Minor update.

Ordered a few parts in preparation for Thunderhill 5-mile.

I finally gave into purchasing a new MAF. It's a VDO MAF per recommendation from BP. I also ordered a GoProHero2 Skeleton, long USB microusb cable, Audio-Technica ATR-3350 external mic. I want to move the mic near the exhaust for TSE3 action. :)

http://i.imgur.com/yQobDnIl.jpg

Also I'm going to skip brake pads for this HPDE. 4mm is plenty for a rear track pad. Hopefully it is enough :)

Today I installed the external mic and external power cable for my GoPro Hero2. I routed the USB Cable over the passenger A-Pillar and go up the Passenger O-shit bar and down the sunroof suction attachment. The external Mic cabling goes up the sunroof and down the rear passenger Oshit-Bar behind the rear passenger headrest into the center armrest and through the little hole to the trunk since I do not have fold down rear seats. The mic is attached to the license plate facing down. Based on the initial run, I'm pretty happy about the quaility of the $20 mic. I may look into a better windcutter as it seems to still have windnoise. Anyways, I'm stoke for new videos! :)

Did you play around with where the least amount of wind turbulence is against the trunk?

I did not. Any suggestions? I only positioned it on the license plate in hopes that would be the least turbulent. I was thinking of taping it to the top of the rear bumper and having the mic facing the back fo the car. There is a few places I would like to try but I ran out of time today to mess with this. (HD failed on server at my parents place so I had to replace the HDD and restore from a backup.)

Volume levels will be hard at first. You'll underestimate how much volume your exhaust shoots out and lots of peaking. Even I was fooling around with my intake with mic in the engine bay and my sound levels were too high.

I have to analyze the WOT section of that video again and see if it the gain is too high. I'll have to read up on how to adjust the gain on the mic with a gopro hero2.

A really really long attachment to suction on the sunroof. LOL. In the video I put it a little further forward than I did in previous videos at Laguna Seca. I think being in the center of the sunroof increased vibrations in the video.

Update time!

Today I went to Thunderhill Raceway to try out the longest configuration they had; The 5-Mile Thunderschielfe. The event was hosted by Ace of Exclusive Track Days and it was $205/driver for 7 20minute sessions. Ultimately the schedule changed to 2x30minute sessions in the morning and 4x20min sessions after lunch. I opted out of the afternoon sessions because my buddy's STI had a CEL and we wanted to get back to watch the Warriors! His STI ultimately died on the freeway 20miles away so that sucked. Overall, it was fun, I wish I stayed for 2 more sessions but there is always next time.

This was my first time at Thunderhill 5-mile and I was unfamiliar on how T6W was. It is somewhat a blind over the top left that switches to a right. I thought I could straighten out earlier than I could've and that there was actual pavement there..instead I broke a rim. It's okay, its just a wearable item I guess.

Gasoline has a shelf life of 90-100 days. Fuel Stabilizers slows down the absorption of water. Since I only drove 1633 miles in the past 15months, it is a good idea to run some fuel stabilizer into the tank to help prevent high water content and cause stale fuel. Usually proir to a track day, I'll drive the car for a week on my commute to waste all the fuel and get some fresh fuel into the tank.

I can't believe you can resist going almost 3 months without driving that baby!

I get the itch, but here is the situation:

The ZHP sits at my parents garage in San Francisco. I live across the bay bridge in Richmond. It's only 14 miles, but it can take 45minutes up to well over an hour to reach my parents. Whenever I do visit my parents, it's usually on weekdays. The amount of time to take the car out, and then have to return the car back to my parents garage is a large pain in the ass. I guess that's what you get for free storage. :)

Someday I'll have a 2-car garage where my gf's E90 and my E46 will be able to sit so it will be far easier to take it out for a spin.

For now, quarterly drives makes sense.

Update: I'm daily driving it again!

I driven more miles in the past 4 days than in the past 3months. I'm still on my APEX ARC8s and the Dunlop Starspec Z1s from 2012 are near the end of its life. I will need tires soon and I'm thinking the PSS will be a better choice than true track tire. I haven't been doing as many track days and I think I would enjoy it more on the weekends if it was on a more street friendly tire.

Tirerack has a sale till the 12th for PSSs so I may get new tires soon.
