Last gas tank was 57.8mpg. Got a steady 550 miles before I decided to fill up under 10 gallons. :)

Once you add the douchebag factor my mpg is -1mpg. hahaha

Kalim, time for a S54 station wagon!!

I realize that when I drive eco-friendly, I am much calmer. I've been losing my patience with morons on the roads too much recently (daily basis) and have been doing stupid things to get around them, so I'm shifting into Prius driver mode so I could keep myself in check. See Derek, you're being a good influence on me. :p

LOL BP.

Here are a few more that seem obvious but sometimes we never think about it and don't do it.

-Accelerate going downhill vs uphill to use gravity as your advantage. Surprisingly I find myself not doing this alot and just wanting to keep up with traffic.

-Scan a 1 mile ahead and plan out your coast. Even if there is a massive gap, chances are in heavy traffic, it will slow down yet again and you wasted all that gas to accelerate going up to speed.

-Learning traffic patterns in the best. The heavy traffic areas near me, I noticed no one likes the right 2 lanes because they are eventually going to exit about 2miles away. I use those lanes and skip a ton of traffic to enter near the exit..like an asshat but not that close so it doesn't look obvious I was doing it. :)

Honestly I drive so many miles a year like you BP, I tend to play the "no brakes" game and see how long I can drive without the brakes. Speeding only usually gives me 4-5 minutes extra when I get home but in reality its probably spent doing absolutely nothing. I think I benefit with 500 miles tanks more than saving time in the Prius..

The 330i on the other hand..I'll drive fast.

It'll strike when you least expect it, lol.

Yes, if you wanted to do it right, the SAS would be reset and all of the other DSC sensors would be recalibrated on the rack. A few E9X people have mentioned AutoRnD for custom alignments, though I've never had them work on my car.

1975 and older are smog exempt but I don't know what year that E21 is. Highly doubt its a 1st year.

There are extremely few 1975's around anywhere. The first US model year was 1976, so unless somebody imported a 1975 Euro spec it's not gonna happen.

...but if you're interested in a real 1975 with race pedigree (it's actually the very first E21 ever imported to the US): 1975 BMW 320 Chassis # 3761629 IMSA RS/GT3 (http://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.281423722007176.1073741840.270242943125254)

I ordered a few things from thebmwpartstore.com :

-Lower Intake boot
-Intake Clamps
-Fuel filter clamps
-License plate light lenses
-Camber bolts/nuts/washers for the rear
-Cabin Filter
-Steering Coupler

See I can do some of these soon.

I like to replace the belly pan with an M3 and replace my splash shield so I can redo my brake ducts. The original ducts are starting to tear and I did a poor job on the hole since I didn't have a circular saw.

Minor update:

I reinstalled my OEM brake pads and reinstalled the zhp rims. The front track pads are practically done and its probably best not to drive on them on the street anyways. On the side I also replaced my ground control perches as they were starting to lose its shape. I've been meaning to do this for awhile now and finally gotten to it.

I added some pics of the original black plates and the new red ones.

I would be fine with leaving number 1 & 2 as the stock 330 items but it would be awesome to have the trans cover #3 if not 4 5 and 6 as well.

The M3 panels up front are 51717892122 for the transmission and 51717892953 for the extra plastic cover over the fuel filter which hooks into the former. You have to add the bracket to support the covers (see link below).

You'll find those and the rear ones under the v-brace here: http://realoem.com/bmw/showparts.do?model=BL93&mospid=47714&btnr=51_3284&hg=51&fg=80

A lot, haha. I have yet to get those panels so I'm not sure if all of the prestol cages/body nut inserts are even present. The M3 reinforcement plate at least has the prestol cages for some of the screws for the transmission cover.

Sooo.. I took off my old intake boot assuming it was bad. It did not have any visible cracks or leaks. Since I already removed it, I opt to just replace it anyways since I replaced the upper boot in November.

Now I am suspicious where the CEL was from. It does not look like it is from intake boot itself. Perhaps the AFE Intake? The MAF was a bit loose in the velocity stack connection but I didn't make much of it being a problem. I did use the OEM seal ring/gasket from the stock intake but it was still loose.

For now, I decided as well to go back to a stock airbox. I noticed my intake boots weren't exactly aimed correctly to the MAF. Did I install the boots at a wrong angle? The lower boot seems fine since it has the tab to line up with the TB. I'm not sure why the upper boot is somewhat bending and causing some issues.

I don't remember if the intake boot was OEM or not. I'll have to dig up my receipts and check again.

edit: The intake boot was from AutoHaus, but it says it was an OEM boot.

Ill try again in the morning before work to undo everything again.. I also realized I no longer have that pad mount on tbe bottom of the stock intake anymore. I should figure a way to get the AFE to work correctly with the two intake boots.

Stett boots or similar, OEM boots & CAI means a hair too long with upper boot kinking a bit. Stett's or similar can be trimmed to fit as it should resulting in no kinks and smoother air flow.

FYI,

You can use an X3 3.0 intake boot. It's a 1 piece design rather than the E46 two piece design. You can trim the ends a bit as well should feel the need to.

Where do you trim the boot? The upper one?

Edit,

I actually decided to reinstall the lower intake boot. I saw that there is slightly some wiggle room to alter the angle of the boot where the tab is closer to the top notch. I adjusted it and it seems to be better.. Of course when I did readjust the boots I managed to snap the little twig on the F connector. Upon further inspection, I noticed the rubber line connecting to the smaller line of the F connector was brittle and cracked. It literally disintegrated as I removed it. Perhaps thats where my vaccum leak lies. Anyways. I reinstalled the AFE intake and it doesnt look to be kinking the intake boot significantly so I am happy for now.

Now to order parts again...

It never ends! lol

I've found the small F-connector barb to the FPR line breaks off easily when it's old, so not unusual. Both ends of the FPR line will have disintegrating vacuum line, so the fuel filter side might be worth a glance when you're down there next.

derbo

I wasn't surprised it snapped, I was just hoping it didnt!

Small recap:

Last night
-install lower intake boot
-intake boot looked odd,
-installed stock intake to confirm it still looked odd.

This morning
-shifted intake boot a bit.
-reinstalled AFE intake and still looks okay
-broke the F connector.. :facepalm
-jacked up car to remove underbody brace
-see lots of oil on the oil pan, possible oil pan gasket.

Tonight
-install steering coupler
-inspect Fuel filter.
-put car back down for now
-Order parts..lol

Hopefully I'll get more time soon and I can swap out the fuel filter too. I replaced it in 2010, and have a Mann fuel filter sitting on my workbench.

Currently I just want to know if I solved the lean codes as I cannot visually see the intake boot being cracked. I am left to see where else the problem would be from. Hopefully not a MAF sensor..

I did the steering coupler earlier tonight and it is pretty simple! The bottom bolt is a bit tricky to unbolt with an E10 bit and socket but it wasn't too bad. I guess I should say it's simiple in a non-rust car like a california car. There didn't seem to be any major distortion but I figure might as well replace. Next on the list for the steering is the tie rods but I'll have to save that for another month.

Further inspection of the lower area, it definitely looks like an oil pan gasket leak. I'm debating if I want to do my oil pan gasket in my garage. I don't feel like getting my parent's garage messy. Maybe I'll have Performance Tech replace my camber bolts, oil pan gasket and do an alignment. :D

Yup. Told you it was easy! A lot of times the coupler looks perfectly fine, but the rivets that hold the flex disc will loosen up and the flex disc itself will be a little soft. Turning the steering wheel to a position with the bolt head facing down makes it really easy to undo the bolt from underneath, too.

Sucks about the oil pan gasket. It's not a common thing on M54s, but I guess age is taking its toll.

Could be the pan, but might be worth checking for a source higher up. The X5 3.0 (M54) I just worked on had a leaking crimp on the VANOS oil line that was causing oil to drip down onto the seam, making it look like a leak all around the front and left side of the pan.

I finally managed to get myself an intake F connector on Monday and install it. Those suckers cost a lot at retail parts!

Also I recently ordered a PA Soft (china knockoff from new egg) and it arrived today at work. I started to install it today on my macbook, but it wasn't exactly working. I kept getting a "Hardware not ready" error. Originally I suspected it might be bad hardware. I was determined to get it to work, and thought the 2005 drivers were a little out of date and might need some updating. After installed 2013 FTDI drivers, it still was not communicating with the car..
I am currently using a Macbook Retina Pro (Haswell) running Parallels 9 using Win 7 X86. NCSexpert/DIS/INPA all work in this fashion but the PA Soft refused to work. BP, do you have any suggestions? I'm not sure if you are using virtual machines for your bmw tools. If you aren't ignore this :)

After trying for a few hours I decided to bring something back the dead. My 2005 Dell 710M running XP. It has a 30minute battery life with a close to 10-15minute boot. Magically, the software installed without a problem and it worked so it definitely wasn't a hardware problem! I bought PA Soft solely to edit the EEPROM. I finally could get the coolant temp and speedo settings that Terra graciously shared with the interwebs. I have not yet to test the speedometer but others have confirmed it so I am pleased that I was able to edit it. Thanks again Terra!

Hopefully I can solve the driver/possibleOS issue with PA soft and use my macbook without the need of bringing the dinosaur back out again.

On another note, my fiddling with the car without being on a charger, left the battery in a pretty dead state. It had enough to be in position 2 without any issue but it could not start the engine. I suspect the 2009 battery I installed is no longer a good battery. The sleep drain on the car was under 60mA so I don't see the immediate drain from the car sitting there. I will have to give the battery a load test when it is fully charged but I doubt its going to be any good. It might be a good time to update that 5 year OEM battery anyways.

Anyways, thanks for reading the update! :)

Derek,
I know it sounds redundant, but check in Device Manager to see if the BMW Scanner driver is installed (it'll be painfully obvious if it isn't). If it isn't, then update the software from the BMWScanner folder from the root of C:

Also, try another USB port. These two items usually resolve the issue for me.

I tried both USB ports, but no luck. The BMW Scanner was installed with drivers provided, and when that didn't work I tried it with the FTDI drivers online. Both didn't not work.

PA Soft does see the scanner and drivers are installed with both green lights but no dice communicating to the car. It might be an issue related to the virtual machine and how USB interacts with OSX. I'm stumped. It works perfectly fine on the xp machine, perhaps I can install a virtual machine within a virtual machine and then run it. INCEPTION.

I ran the same setup as you have; I ran this on my OS X Macbook Pro Retina through a VM just fine and everything functioned.
I did find though that sometimes when I rebuild the VM and use Windows 7 it had a hit-or-miss functionality. If it didn't work, a reimage is what it took to fix it. With the XP image, it worked out of the box the first time, and is the only time I used an XP image when rebuilding.

Perhaps what you can try to do is run the FTDIUNIN.exe file from the C:\BMWScan140\Drivers directory to remove the drivers installed for it and then reinstall using the files in that same folder.

I had this issue before and it drove me crazy. PA Soft and the blue INPA cable use different OBD drivers, and they both want their own different specific version. I solved this by setting up a 2nd VM and haven't had issues since.

Not the cheapest but its okay, I rather have it in there right now and eliminate the battery as a cause. Everything else was checking out fine and I still had a bad battery so I think it was time to remove that as a variable.

It is isn't it!

Figuring out what the Lean Codes for:
I put back on the stock intake in order to eliminate the AFE intake as a variable for the lean codes since it started after I put in the AFE Intake. I drove about 100 miles and the SES light did not return. I originally thought it was the intake boots as they were torn when I installed the AFE intake. Since the SES hasn't return yet, I'm wondering if it is the AFE intake itself.

I don't understand how the intake would cause the lean codes so I'll continue to monitor car whenever I drive it. The rubber ring that you remove from the stock intake MAF to put on the AFE was a bit loose. However, this is pre-MAF so it doesn't make sense to me that it would create a lean condition.

Is there a way to reset the MAF?

Avetiso
02-19-2014, 09:40 PM
I don't think the MAF resets... it's there for measuring real-time, so I couldn't imagine any "reset" you could do to it.

Try cleaning the MAF? However, it shouldn't technically be a variable since getting rid of the aFe eliminated the code.

By the way, notice any difference returning to stock? What do you think?

derbo
02-19-2014, 10:28 PM
Oops you are right Dario. It's just a sensor and it would just output. I meant fuel trim adaptations. Since I only drove 100 miles, I'm not 100% convinced the AFE was the problem. So many people have no issues with the AFE so it is a little hard to rule it as the problem. I will drive it more next week.

As for your intakes. I have the boots that I took off my car when I put my Dinan TB on... They are about 20k miles old, but in great shape and still pretty soft. If you'd like, I can send them to you. I was going to donate them in the pay it forward thread anyway... LMK if you need them (text me) and I can send them out at some point..

Thanks Joop! I already have brand new boots installed on the car. I'll have to do more mileage to determine if the AFE intake was the problem or not. (Possible just the little rubber ring from the MAF. Hopefully after this is solved, there are no other major issues to deal with!

Macbook issues:
I doubt 10.9.1 > 10.9.2 will make a difference as I just installed that yesterday. The issue seems to be related to my 2013 rMBP. My dad's 2012 MBA with USB3.0 manages to work the PA SOFT software. I hope its not a hardware issue. I've narrowed it down in the console logs to the USB not loading correctly. I need to determine if it is a software or hardware problem. From the looks of it, it seems to be software related. I might reinstall OSX 10.9.2 as a clean install and see if it is willing to work.

I reinstalled 10.9.2 and used Migration Assistant to transfer from a clone HDD backup I made. Hopefully this will work. If it doesn't I will do a full clean install and see if it works. If it doesn't I will just go back to my full clone and call it a day.

No luck on the PA Soft dilemma. It works half the time...and reads the IKE sometimes and reads the LCM other times. Of course the MBA and the XP Dell works perfectly. I may have a faulty USB2.0? I'm not sure.

Anyways, I like to get my height to this! I need to order new swift springs to raise the rear a bit.

I swapped my ground control springs for swift springs. My original springs was 6" F and 7" rear. I went to a 6" all around but that made the rear a lot lower than I expected. I raised the perch as high as I could safely but it's still too low in the rear.

I know its been a very long time since you mounted the Apex wheels, but for some reason I just noticed them in your sig. I went back through your entire build thread until I found them. They look so bad ass. Definitely my favorite wheel as of now, the color choice is best too. Your car is looking awesome. Keep it up. :headbang

Did you just get new rear springs? I know you wanted to adjust the rear.

Also, on the APEX wheels you have, what is the name of the color? I am wanting to do something around that color... maybe a little lighter.

I bought a 7" spring to replace the 6" I have.

The arc8 color is called anthracite. I think it's perfect as it's brake dust color :)

Matt, iirc the next color would be hyper-black (which I have for my ///M). I like anthracite or hyper-black because when the wheels get dirty from brake dust they still look okay....with anthracite, even more so :thumbsup

Minor Update:

Rear Swift Springs Install:
Sunday I decided to tackle replacing my short 6" springs in the rear with a 7" spring. The spring perch was at it's maximum highest height and I felt it was still too low in the rear. The only real solution was to replace the spring with a taller version to allow more adjustment. I removed the springs and saw how much the 6" spring settled! It was standing at a 5.5" spring. No wonder I had no more adjustment! The original spring that was included with the Ground controls were Eibach 6.5" spring. Since Swift does not produce half increment springs, I thought it would've been a great idea to get 4 6" springs. I should've gotten a 7" in the rear in the first place! :facepalm

After 4-5 jackups to get the height to about 23" from bottom of fender to the bottom of the rim, I felt I had to raise the front to match. I have to say, it looks stock to me but I will be okay with this for now as I know I have more clearance when the suspension is fully loaded. The previous setup was 22.4" in the front, 22" in the rear.

AFE Intake Reinstall:
It's been a few hundred miles on the stock intake and I do not have a CEL for too lean. Something between installing the AFE intake and driving it caused the CEL. I decided to reinstall the AFE intake and reset the adaptations since I did not do that last time. I tried doing it through INPA but I manage to get a CEL and a crazy rough idle. A brief talk to Kalim and resetting the adaptations from DIS instead of INPA resulted in a proper idling ZHP again. Thank you Kalim for the assist!

Rear Passenger Camber Bolt:
I also replaced one of the camber bolts in the rear suspension. The driver side is completely seized, and I cannot for the love of me, move the bolt. I left it as is. I will address it when I bring the car to Performance Technic to address a few more items at once.

Thanks to Wyatt,

I changed the DSC options to have a single stage DSC. I am unclear at exactly what the Logic LSD option does.

DSC

LOGIK_HA_SPERRE aktiv/nicht_aktiv Logic Limited-Slip Differential
SPERRDIFFERENZREGELUNG aktiv/nicht_aktiv Differential Locking Control
TRAKTIONDIFFERENZREGELUNG aktiv/nicht_aktiv Differential Traction Control

I'm just going to copy/paste this from the Coding thread about the MK60 and LSD.

Update:

My zhp cluster does not have M Track Mode Icon during the cluster self-test. From the faint print, I do not see the icon present. The DSC 2-stage indicator is still a viable option.

Vehicle Info:
330i 10/2003 MY2004
DSC Module MK60.C12

So far, this is the list of the options I believe I should enable:

SPERRDIFFERENZREGELUNG

It is also here on my google spreadsheet:
https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1PwZoAJHq47_SZz_zRG4L_Axn8X_VvMdZViXjEZheo1Q/edit?usp=sharing

Results:
The C12 module failed to code the different understeer and oversteer parameters that the ZCP MK60 has enabled. I recieved a fault code4 "coding is faulty" when I tried to enable the parameters.

With help from Kalim, I use NCSdummy find out the parameters were not available in the C12 module DATEN File itself. I browsed other MK60 modules and found that the C06 module is an M3 MK60 with the available parameters I wanted. I grabbed the C06 module data values for the parameter values I wanted and added them to the C12 module. Once the module was updated I proceeded to NCSexpert. I recoded the C12 module with the newly added parameters with no errors/issues from NCSexpert. I opened up DIS to double check for faults/errors on the MK60 and I did not see any errors or faults during a short test.

I did not get to drive the car yet, let alone start it up. However based on the DIS module short test, it seems that the DSC is accepting the new parameters. If these parameters actually make a difference, I will have to find out.

Thank you Kalim for your help! Thank you Terra for the information, and Thank you Wyatt for actually making a thread here that pushed me to look into this. :X

Thanks Charlie!

LOL.

My calipers aren't in prestine condition. They've been tracked on and used. If you are looking for a nice clean set, look elsewhere. These were used to their potential lol. Dust boots are melted, and there are knicks and knacks all over the caliper. :)

What would be included in the part-out:

BMW Performance Calipers L + R
BMW OEM 135i Brake Pads
BMW OEM E46 Blank rotors for stock pads
BMW OEM Performance Rotors (tracked on, but still good)
BMW/Brembo Dust boot replacements (good for one pair)
ECSTuning SS Brake lines
Hardbrakes.com 1.0mm Titanium Brake Shields

I'm honestly not even sure what it's worth.

I'm not sure how my time schedule is. My team at work consist of 2 and the other guy is on vacation for 2 weeks. It means I'll be busy at work. I may have time on Sunday to install, but if not, it will be next week possibly.

At least you can spend the week gazing at your new BBKs after you get home from work Derek! ;)

hhaha. I actually have the BBK sold to the local for a pretty good price I think.

I tried to install them today. Turns out I need an angle grinder to grind off the knuckle as the casting flash is a few mm too large for caliper bracket. CURSES YOU CASTING FLASH! I will try to outsource the angle grinder from someone or I might be lazy and get Performance technic to do a few things for me.

Replace seized caliper bolt
Install BBK
Get Alignment

I don't feel like cleaning up the metal dust so I'm taking the lazy route and getting the shop to do it for me. :)

I do have to put back on the ARC8s as their tires are newer than the ZHP wheels. This will be good for alignment.

What the hell is a casting flash? I've never heard of this term.

At the caliper mounting points, there is a flash at the end.

This isn't a BMW but its basically what I need to do. I am lazy. I'm going to get the shop to do it.
