Anyone know where to get a decent skid plate to guard my oil pan when I lower my car?

That's what the frame reinforcement does, no? It's covered bro.

Aren't the ones on our cars made of plastic though ?

12-14-2011, 02:35 PM
You should have one of those metal reinforcement plates protecting the oil pan and steering rack, then in front of that is a plastic shield. The front of the plastic shield connects to the bottom of the front bumper cover and the back of the plastic shield screws into that metal reinforcement plate.

Relevant? (http://www.zhpmafia.com/forums/showthread.php?2026-Reinforcement-plate-oil-drain-missing-cover&p=134912#post134912)

The relevance is that he keeps saying he "wants a metal one to cover his oil pan", when in fact.....the metal one is covering his oil pan, and the plastic one is just underneath his engine bay.

Maybe I am mis-understanding.

Maybe this will help give a better visual of what the undercarriage looks like and what would be involved in making some type of skidplate. It may be possible to have someone fabricate an aluminum plate that you could bolt to the existing skidplate that could be extended a bit to protect the inner balljoints. Of course doing something like that is just going to further decrease your ground clearance.....at least a little bit.

To fab that plastic piece outta metal would be insanely expensive. The plastic piece alone is over $300.

"Engine compartment screening" part #1

I think you must be looking at the "Front aggregate protective plate" part #26 which I honestly have no idea where it's located on our cars, if it even IS on our cars. :dunno

But ya, you're right, it would be very tough to fabricate. Too many curves and bends. I was talking about just making some flat plate to bolt to the reinforcement plate. Just another layer of metal between the undercarriage and the road.

Ya, I know what you're saying. I think either it's just the angle of that pic or maybe that's not the exact same one that we have because I do know they vary somewhat between years/models. Here's a thread I found at M3f where a guy ordered the aggregate plate and mentions it wasn't what he was looking for and that it was made of metal. Penske parts lists the weight of it as 20.24 lbs so that right there tells me it can't be a plastic plate.

LOL....is everyone confused yet? :-)

Check your first realoem link again, there are 2 part #1's. The second one "from 03/2001" is the correct 8344 part. I think that pic you posted from that Czech site is an error, wrong pic for the part. When you search the 8893 part at Penske it again is the 20.24 lb front aggregate plate. I still don't believe we have that part on our cars.

http://www.penskeparts.com/DiagramsByPartNumber.aspx?parts=51717028893

Also, the drawing of the 8344 part on realoem and Penske isn't quite accurate, it looks a bit different than the actual part does. I run into this at work every now and then, not uncommon.

Awwww! :-) I was referring to part #1 though and you are looking at #26. I don't think you'll find that part #26 on your car. I'm betting that is a glitch in BMW/Realoem's fiche and that part shouldn't be listed for our years.

That doesn't look right... it's shaped different in the back....

If you're talking about how the corners are rounded I had kinda wondered about that myself so after seeing your post I went out and looked at it and reached under and felt the corners. It is rounded, maybe not quite as much as that pic shows but real close. I wonder if they maybe just changed the shape a little. Or is it possible it's just a bit of a distorted view due to the angle of the shot? Doesn't seem like it would really make a difference either way though.

Anybody happen to have theirs off and could take a pic?
