I've posted a hello in the intro forum but I figured I'd post here since I picked up my ZHP yesterday! Got it from here on the forum. I'll post pics and stuff later :)

I just thought it was kinda funny, I had the car checked out before I got it, had no codes or anything, then driving the car home I get an SES light. I feel like a real BMW owner now ;)

It was P0171 and P0174... looks like I'm gonna be digging into the intake boots/MAF to check things out sooner than I thought. Oh well. The car is awesome and running great regardless.

Congrats. Most PO's will clear codes right before the sale.

They always come in several hundred miles later.

Congrats on the new ZHP. My car did the same thing to me on my way home to ND from Vegas. Got an SES light shortly after pulling over at some random freeway exit to pour a bottle of fuel additive in the tank. I think it happened because I opened the fuel cap without shutting the car off. Not sure why I got the SES rather than the "check gas cap" light though. It went out by itself a couple of hours later. The good thing though is I've never had an SES light since......a little over 2 years and 25,000 miles.

which car did you get?

This one maybe?

You know, that was my first guess as well, the fuel cap. I filled up on the way back in NJ and I wondered if the attendant closed the cap tight enough. I don't remember exactly when the light came on, could have been then but coulda been somewhere else. Not sure why that would give me the codes I got, and I've driven the car a few hours' worth since then and still got the light.

When I have time I'll check the simple stuff - air filter, boots, MAF. Hopefully I'll see something obvious.

That NJ car Barry linked was indeed the one I got! 04 4dr silver grey 6mt. It's really in great shape. I had a BMW shop check the car out and they said the car didn't have any codes - I thought even if you cleared it with the right gadgets you could see the codes... Anyway I don't blame the seller. Minor setback!

I can't remember the last time I saw a gas station with an attendant. Think it was when I was in New Jersey several years ago.

Yup, mandatory full service in jersey. Bleh. I try to avoid gassing up there whenever possible.

Oh yeah... my car has a leaky VCG, but it's pretty slight. I was going to wait until springo to do all that vcg/vanos/plug business. I don't think the VCG can cause the lean codes?

There is a 76 here in La Jolla that does it. I think they charge $1 extra/gallon for full service

I dunno, having an attendant do it for you is a really small price to pay for $0.50-0.60/a gallon less for fuel than CT. :(

Ouch! That's a big diff...

Oh, went out with a flashlight and took me all of about 60 seconds to find my problem. Lower intake accordion hose is all ripped up. That wasn't so bad :)

At least it was easy to find. Since I don't have any dealer close by I bought a set of the intake tubes shortly after buying my car......they're still sitting in a box. Might put them on next spring just to avoid a problem at a bad time.

Quick update.

Got the new boots in. Broke the little F connector and had to get another one. Good lord what a pain in the ass that job was! SES light still on after a drive... maybe it will take a couple more trips to reset itself (assuming that was the problem)? Looked pretty cut and dry that the torn boot was the issue. I think I got everything back on pretty snug.

Good to see the "reverse" hose clamp treated you right.....like the rest of us. :)
