Well, since I got my car I've been putting in a quart right around every 1,000 miles. My first course of action was a VCG. That didn't work. Then I did my CCV, and that didn't work either. Next on my list was Vanos seals and anti-rattle kit along with new spark plugs. After that I got an oil change just to have everything cleaned up.

That was about 1,000 miles ago and I didn't get the light. Then, last night I checked my dipstick and do my amazement... the oil was pretty much right where it was right after my oil change.

So my question is, does VANOS have anything to do with burning or disappearing oil?

Good question. I don't think so.

I thought we determined that the bolt on the passenger side of the VANOS unit was the issue.

New oil maybe did it. Thin oil burns up and did you use a different brand. In going to castrol as soon as my friend brings me it.

That was my LEAKING issue. I've always had the burning issue..

Maybe. I did use a different brand, which was whatever the bmw dealer put in it. 5w-30 i think..

I found that when I ran M1 0W-40 oil got burned - but when I shifted to Motul 8100 5W-40 no more oil consumption. The think the zero weight oils are simply too thin. Theree may have been mutiple factors driving the oil consumption.

Sounds legit. Makes sense, if you ask me. I can't get into technicalities, but it just sounds right based on repair history and new oil.

Yep, i believe the 0 weights are too thin as well. 5w FTW!

FWIW, I have not had consumption issues with the 328i using Mobile 1 0W-40.

I'm running Pento High 5w-40 and I'm losing oil. Lost about 1/2 a quart in 3k miles.

Is that LL-01?

Here are the specs. LL-04 i think? I don't know what the specs mean though as far as LL-01 goes.

Yeah, you should get some Mobil 1 0W-40 or Castrol Euro 5W-30. You need to run LL-01 in your e46. You should change your oil over break to any oil that meets that Specification.

What's the difference?

I think the additive is different. But I'm almost sure that if you change your oil, it won't burn like that.

Someone who spends time on BITOG...please help out :)

Well I had oil burning before I had this oil also. Not sure what kind it was but I know I lost oil before I used this. My mechanic has also been working with BMW's his whole life and said this is what he uses in all of his BMW's and his customer's BMW's and hasn't had any issues with it so I don't think the oil is what the issue is as far as losing oil goes. I could be wrong though.

Also.... LL-04 does not meet LL-01 spec.
