Carrying on from this thread: Should I buy a 2002? (http://www.zhpmafia.com/forums/showthread.php?5532-Should-I-buy-a-2002)

so I think I've been able to convince him to trade my labor on the 2002 and mainly the disassembled '71 911T as a huge part of the cost towards me getting the 2002 at the price he paid for it. So now the work begins:

Pictures!

What BMW AG emailed me:

"The BMW 2002 US VIN 1664122 was manufactured on November 26th, 1968 and delivered on December 10th, 1968 to the importer BMW Concessionaires G.B. in London (Great Britain). The original colour was Chamonix, paint code 085."

2002 roundel on the left. Middle is the original one from my first car, '91 735i (Alpine White on Black Leather). Right is a backup I have for the ZHP

http://i29.photobucket.com/albums/c288/jhermes/2002/backseat.jpg

We then drove it to the gas station and filled it up. Stopped at CVS for smokes and drinks. Car was 3/3 on start-up with the new plugs, before it was like "do I really want to start up?"
http://i29.photobucket.com/albums/c288/jhermes/2002/IMG_2520.jpg

http://i29.photobucket.com/albums/c288/jhermes/2002/IMG_2521.jpg

Called the DMV today, found out that IF I can find a set of original black plates in the correct sequence for 1969 I can register the car with them, FTW. The sequence would be 3 letters, 3 numbers. Because 1969 is the end of the run on the black plates (they switched to the blue ones), a plate starting with ZHP is possible to run on my car (FTMFW!!!), now I just have to find a pair of real/original steel California Black & Yellow license plate that starts with the letters ZHP, please keep an eye out everybody.

for example, a set like these:
http://i.ebayimg.com/00/$(KGrHqEOKpgE1qz,q!sWBNioVLTU5w~~_1.JPG?set_id=880 000500F
doesn't have to be in perfect shape, just no rust or holes.

Lots more work to do, at least we've started. Car has gone something like 35 miles since Steve bought it.

Why can't the state just register it and issue you new black plates?

Awesome build.

That's so cool JP. Looking forward to progress. BTW, sets of 2 plates in those colors are fairly rare, especially starting with specific letters like ZHP. Even seeing individual plates for sale is not that common (but they are around for sure). For example, I was at the Rose Bowl swap meet and I found a set of 2 black/yellow matching plates. The guy wanted $100 for them! I asked him if he would bend on the price and he said no way. When asked why, he said matching sets are very hard to find and lowriders really want them, so he can easily get that price. Don't want to discourage you, just pointing out that it might be tough to find.

Hermes

Hell, you found them for $100. I would have been all over those. They go for about $300 on eBay by the time the auction ends

Dane, the law they passed required you to have original black plates, no reissue. Also applies to the later blue plates

In retrospect, I should have gotten them. I wasn't sure you could register them, plus I really didn't have a need for them. No idea they went for that much online! They might look cool on my black zhp though. Did the DMW say the are fair game if they are not registered? Because if they are linked to someone else's car, I was wondering if you could register them to yours - it sounds as if you can as long as they were not registered.

Hermes
12-07-2011, 07:51 AM
the deal (if I understood correctly) is if they are not currently assigned to another car you can register them to yours, assuming the set you bought is in the correct sequence for the year of your car.

Also, if it comes down to it, I can order the 'Historical Vehicle' white plates

Dane, I'd assume the state probably isn't stamping that plate anymore.

I know GA is pretty much the same way - if you can find a plate issued the year the car was manufactured, you can run it. Just have to have the "real" plate in the car.

Interesting thing about the "sequence". I don't really get that because personalize plates have no "sequence". Let me know if you are interested in some and I can see if I can find some next time I'm at the Rose Bowl Swap meet. The next one is actually this Sunday... I'll see if my family wants to go and I'll look for you if you want.

so today we tried to change the brake and clutch fluid. thank you very much to Lawrence for letting us borrow his low-profile jack as the one we had didn't work (another issue with one of the PO's, we think a kid owned the car in the 80s... cut springs)

jack on frame rail plus 2 jack stands just in case... and we chocked the passenger side rear wheel as both driver's side wheels were off the ground.

http://i29.photobucket.com/albums/c288/jhermes/2002/P1000912.jpg

while bleeding the brake fluid we realized the seals on the reservoir are bad. Luckily those were ordered the other day so they should be in on Tuesday. Gave up on the brake system for now.

the craptastic caps on the reservoir, middle one is fine; it's just the outer ones that are bad.

For sure, it's a lot of fun. Hopefully we learn enough on this car that we can do another one easily. Maybe we can find a tii or a turbo.

We plan to finish up all of the bare metal with primer tomorrow, hopefully we can just get a simple coat of paint on it soon so it doesn't look like a total beater.

ok, more work done today...

so we started by NOT using the clutch or brake today since we didn't want puddles of DOT3 on the ground. Luckily the car weighs almost nothing so we pulled it out of its spot and used momentum and about 10 tries to get it up on some ramps. Now the jobs of removing the clutch slave cylinder and getting most of the bare metal covered in a coat of primer began.

Monday to (as I type this):

picked up correct passenger door inner handle ($10) from Autobahn and some freebies from LJ Independent (slave cylinder pushrod + new brake fluid reservior). Also a package came in w/new VCG, e-brake cables, 4 brake hoses, temperature sender, fuel filter, exhaust hangers and some other stuff, I can't remember right now. About 30 minutes ago Steve called me and said the new slave cylinder arrived. Last night we took off the carb and rebuilt it, just waiting for the rain to break for a while so we can reinstall.

Got a message from Steve last night: tranny pulled last week, bought more vinyl to re-do the door cards, still waiting on the clutch rebuild kit.

If anybody see's an E24 rear armrest for sale let me know, I need it in place before I can modify/fit the seats in.

Figured out the engine, clutch and tranny are from a 3/74 build 2002

Installed new clutch disk and pressure plate, reinstalled tranny with new bushings for the gear mount as well as changing fluid (Red Line). Installed new battery + cables. Ripped off the aftermarket exhaust from the header back (it ends right under the tranny). Car is running great now, shifts like butter and is kinda loud but still not too much...

Still need to find an E24 rear armrest from a CSi, if anybody finds one please let me know. Next on the list is probably going to be either brakes or suspension

looking great Hermes. have you thought at all about moving the battery to the trunk? My buddy did this in his 02 and apparenly as simple as it sounds the battery weighs enough to give you perfect 50/50 weight distrobution once it is moved.

I've thoroughly inspected this car and haven't found any real rust. All I've seen is a little from me sanding then exposure to the salt air, hence the layer of green self etching primer. Watching his thread is making me feel bad for not going all out. Luckily for me this car has been in Cali all it's life, unlike his that he bought in MI so that's the difference in condition.

Did I miss something, why a new engine?

it was not worth working on any more once we realized it had a 1600 head. Just decided to find one that already was built decent rather than start over with the current one and try to find a good carbureted head, replace pistons/rods, etc for the current setup.

This one will be disassembled and rebuilt on the engine stand, car will also be disassembled and fully painted. The motor swap is kinda just the kick that was needed to finally get to the paint job

either way it will be replaced with either a Schrick 292 or 304, or Korman reground 300

luckily the stealership had a NOS crank nut ($2.19) so I can turn the motor, the threads in the backup were toast (but it was full of crap so I didn't know until I cleaned it)

after doing some basic math it has become apparent they this is not just a stock 1991cc motor but a .5mm overbored 2012cc version

Interesting. What led you to discover that? Can we see your calculations? Love iron blocks for that reason alone. Over bored FTW!

in the second picture I posted last night you can make out piston diameter of 89.46mm which corresponds to 2nd oversize "A" pistons

(pi x 44.73mm^2) x 80mm stroke x 4 pistons = 2012.21cc

no, they're low compression flat tops (8.3:1). Probably not much of a real difference from stock, but it will help when amplifying gains from mods

Can you do better? :) I would think this would show dyno gain if compared, just oem "new" at this point in this lifetime of this car will have drastic differences.

Take a vacation and hang out in SD for a week, I'll take a few days off.

To go back to the compression story, I honestly don't wanna change the flat tops for crowns due to the fact I'm changing cams. If I run a long duration cam I don't wanna chance a valve tapping on the crown and causing bigger issues.

side drafts + crazy cam = power

...maybe I can find a Camden and go old school crazy with it

well... I guess I should explain my figures

E12 head ported and polished
881 pistons (Euro tii, E12 specific, 2nd oversize/+0.5mm, 10:1 compression)
Garrett Turbo or Camden Supercharger or other non-old school FI setup
tii headers
? grind camshaft
current displacement 2012.21cc (not changing rods/crank to make it a 2.3L)

if I do the S14 crank swap I think I can get 10-15% more power

I'm currently attempting to get my long neck 3.91 out, I think I have to drop the rear subframe. Engine bay is being worked on, I still need to find time to build the replacement engine
