Hey guys. As some of you know I recently sold my 04 330i ZHP, my first BMW. It was hard to do. I really enjoyed the car, but I really missed having a track dedicated car. The ZHP was my weekend toy, and I felt it was too nice to 'race out'. I sold it to a Mafia member and started a search for a E36. I really wanted a M3, but my budget wouldnt allow it right now. I work as a Tech at an Audi VW dealership in MD. At the same time I sold the ZHP someone traded in a 95 325i. Employees can purchase traded in cars for little over trade in. So now it begins-

Sorry to hear that the ZHP is no longer in your garage, but good luck with the E36 track build! I have a Boston Green E36 non-M myself, and it has been a great car, just rolling over 230,000 miles today! Still love my ZHP, but two German ladies can get awfully pricey. Your car looks really clean for its age and like she was well-loved. Maybe I'll see you at VIR or SP sometime!

Thank you all. Brett- hope to see you at the Point or VIR. Jreyes- The interior is old, and tan. I am in the process now of stripping out the interior. As far as the engine, for now I am going to have fun with the 140k mile 2.5, but one day... :devilish. Hermes- The ds1 wheels are also one of my favorites. They just need some decent rubber on them.

Since I titled this 'Budget Track Car Build' I will start with a 6k budget. That includes regular maintenance items, performance parts, etc. I am sure to destroy my budget, but thats what I am shooting for.:rofl update- budget exceeded....

Nice looking car. I hope to have an E36 track car someday. Looks like PO put in camber plates and adjustable struts.

My first step was to get rid of the destroyed stock suspension. The rear mounts are completely gone, and noisey cant even describe it. I wanted a coilover more geared towards tracking than street. I installed TRM Coilovers this past Weds. They have camber plates and nice rear mounts. I was part of a 'group buy' on Bfc. I am very happy with them so far. Very good price, lots of good features. TRM can rebuild and revalve shocks if needed. They have pretty stiff rates- 670 f/ 890 r, and rear sway bar removal is recommended due to rear rates. They seem to handle awesome so far, but I wll update after I get them on a track.

Just a heads up, that's the OEM LTW wing, actually pretty proven performance to boot. And to the E36 M world, slapping the flag on a non-LTW is kind of like slapping an M badge on our ZHPs...but as always, to each their own!.

I waited till I got started to create the thread. I wanted to start it off with some progress. I dont have a spec sheet, but basically I just want a track day toy that is still able to be driven to events. I plan on just doing track days, maybe an occassional autoX. I previously had a few dedicated track cars. I do not plan to race wheel to wheel. Yes I want it caged, not sure whether I am going to do bolt in with reinforcements, or have one welded in. We will see when I get there.

I dig the 'Racecar pics'. Very nice.

I took the 325 to work yesterday and installed new tierods and front swaybar links. Then it was on to the alignment rack. I fine tuned the ride height, and spent a while trying to get all the alignment specs dead on. It all turned out great. Then it was the long way home, PA backroads. The car felt great, much better. I think by spring she should be ready for the track.

I would love to swap a euro M3 motor in. That is not in my budget right now. I am trying to build a fun track car for what that motor cost alone. Maybe one day:biggrin

I have the 325 at work today, I knew it would be a slow day here. I just removed the front bumper and ditched the remaining AC components, everything is now gone beside what is in the cabin. While the bumper was off I also secured the brake vents and removed the fog lights. I have until 5 so I will probably move back into the interior for some more removal of creature comforts.

Next will be the coolant overhaul/ fan delete, new tires, and hopefully I will find some race seats. I have been eyeing Ebay, craigs, forums, etc, for some Sparcos, or similar.

After many hours of searching Forums, Ebay, and Craigslist. I purchased a set of used Corbeau Fx1 Pro seats today. They are in new condition, and the price was right. It required a nice 4 hour long road trip, but worth it. I am stoked. I will order side mounts and floor brackets from VAC this week.

This week I picked up a used rollbar from a local BF member. I got it bolted in, a little paint, and ordered some padding for it. I spent some time removing the rest of the interior trim, and cleaning up the wiring harness. The harness will be an involved project, one step at a time. It definetly is looking alot cleaner with less wiring running to things removed. I am still waiting on my seat brackets to mount the Corbeau Fx1 seats. They will be installed soon. I will have pics up as soon as they are installed. Enjoy.

I get that there will always be a little bit of a fitment lack when you're buying out of the box rollbars, but that looks like it is sitting a good 6-8" from the b pillar and 3-4" from the roof.

Is this normal? I just know from my offroad days that we'd shoot for fitment SUBSTANTIALLY tighter than that.

It fits fine. It is touching the sunroof cassette (soon to be removed for carbon sunroof delete) so less than an inch from roof, and as far as the :-pillars, that is normal as the bolt in bars are made to fit sedan or coupe, so pretty standard fit.

I finally was able to get VAC seat mounting brackets. Someone had a set on Ebay so I was able to save a few bucks. I also received Kirkey rollbar padding, and a 5' vinyl strip to make a sun screen. Good to make a little more progress.

Alright so Corbeau Fx1 seats installed. My father loaned me a set of Corbeau seat belts, they are only temporary use until I get five point harnesses. I threw some padding on the rollbar main hoop, and a black vinyl screen on the windsheild. I didnt have visors after removing the headliner, so the vinyl screen helps out. There is still alot that needs to be done, so I will update soon.....

Zj96sc- Thank you. I am not sure what wheel yet. I want it suede, a Sparco or Momo brand. With the seats fitted I feel just a little further from the wheel. So I want to find a dished wheel or use a spacer on a standard race wheel. I have been watching for used ones on the sites also. I'll have pics up as soon as I get one.

check out the OMP corsica superleggero. 95mm dish. 30mm grip diameter, 350mm wheel diameter....or just the plain corsica in suede.

superleggero carries a hefty price. not like sparco or momo don't though. plain corsica is more reasonable at about $270.

Time for an update. Signed up for a few BMWCCA HPDEs at the end of summer. That gives me time to get the car situated. I recently did some fluid changes, replaced the valve cover gasket, and painted the cover while it was off. Not cool enough for pics. Received a Momo Mod78 330mm suede steering wheel & G-Force 6 point FIA/SFI harness belts. Super nice day today, got out of work early and started the install. Had M3ta5in hanging out. All turned out good. Brakes are next on the list- will update soon. Time for some pics...............Enjoy

Today I received a carbon fiber sunroof delete. I purchased it on Ebay from 'Whyyynott'. Very good person to deal with. It arrived fast, boxed well, and was pre-drilled for a 5 minute install. I removed my factory sunroof cassette with rollbar and seats still installed. The roof was held in place with 10 torx screws and was easily pulled out the front door (the cassette was much heavier than I thought it would be). The delete panel fit perfectly, and the factory seal is still in place. I am very happy with the purchase, fit, and finish. Stoked :biggrin

Static667- I enjoy the sunroof on my DD, lol. I would probably do the same thing if my DD was cool though. I drive a VW Golf or a Honda Crv. Its not hot yet. I imagine this car is going to be like driving an oven.

Dane- It was $280 shipped UPS. The seller makes them for E30_36_46.

328ioc- The sunroof assembly with motor was 36lbs, the delete panel was 3lbs. Nice to get the weight from the top of the car. I am going to corner balance the car soon, so I will have a total weight in a couple weeks.

I took the car to work today so I could replace the motor and transmission mounts. It was an easy install and the car feels more solid. I am sure that I removed original 140k mile 17 year old mounts. I was looking at poly mounts, solid mounts, etc, but decided to go with e46 M mounts for both. I was trying to stick with my 'budget' goal. Getting closer to being ready. I have subframe reinforcements, LSD, and brakes to still tackle. Earlier today I ordered delrin FCABs, a Wink Mirror, and a dead pedal. Thanks for the comments, see ya next time. :biggrin

I installed Delrin FCABs today, followed by a fresh alignment. Since removing the carpet, I havent had a dead pedal or place to put my left foot. Its been driving me crazy. Per a thread about a similar problem, I purchased a 89 Mustang dead pedal (very cheap on Ebay). Installed the Mustang pedal where the left speaker once lived. Its so awesome to have a dead pedal again! Also installed the VAC anti-sub belt brackets. Now the crotch belts are properly bolted in and ready for action. The ride home today with the new bushings, alignment, dead pedal, etc, was very nice. The E36 is feeling really good.

I received a box of goodies from Bimmerworld. Now project 'rear' starts. I have subframe reinforcents, rear shock reinforcements, Powerflex black subframe bushings, diff bushings, and a 3.91 LSD rear end from an automatic e36. This should keep me busy for a few days. I also received a low temp thermostat and aluminum thermo housing. I am getting closer to being ready for tracking. I just have brakes and tires on the list of 'to do'. As we all know the 'to do' list never ends, it just keeps growing. I will get pics up when the rear is being removed.

Started the rear modification. Removed the arms, diff, and subframe. Pressed out all of the old bushings. Re-painted the subframe, and upper control arms (got SPC replacement tubular camber arms for the lowers). Installed the Powerflex subframe bushings, and diff bushings. Changed out the diff fluid in my new diff with some Redline fluid. Then got started welding in the subframe reinforcements.

Should be done welding in subframe reinforcements tomorrow. Will hit it up with some paint, and a little undercoating. Get to re-installing everything. Hit up the alignment rack again. Thanks guys. I got it finished up today. All reinforced, bushed, armed, diffed, etc. It rides great, stiffer, and more solid feeling. The diff is also awesome. It accelerates quicker, stays in the revs, but on the downside a little silly at highway speeds ( at 70mph revs @4000rpm ).

When aligning my car last week I noticed the right front brake line had a tear in the rubber coating. It wasnt leaking, but it was a nice enough break that I was concerned. I purchased Bimmerworld stainless brake lines, installed them, and flushed the brake fluid. Pedal feel is better, but knowing the lines are new is the best part.

I also received fog light delete covers. I found them on Ebay really cheap. I am going to remove the bumper cover and secure them from behind so I dont end up losing them. It looks alot better than the empty holes.

I have had a bunch of coolant system parts under my bench at work for a while now. Friday it was slow so I finally got it done. Replaced the radiator with a factory Behr unit, Expansion tank, Water pump, Bimmerworld fan delete kit low temp thermostat, Aluminum thermostat housing, Radiator hoses, Serpentine belt, Belt tensioner, refill with BMW coolant/ water mix, and a bottle of Water Wetter. Pretty easy job turned out good. The last 2 important items on the "to do" list have been ordered- track brakes, and tires. I will update when I get the parts and install complete. Its almost ready for track duty now. Almost done.... We know its never done.:biggrin

Also while coolant was draining I decided to cut the large ugly tag bracket from my center bumper moulding. I could buy a tag delete moulding, but I plan to do a M3 front bumper soon anyway. Once I get the bumper I am having both bumpers and the side skirts painted to match the car. I am not crazy about the grey rock guard sides and lower bumpers. So until the M3 bumper shows up, it cleans up the front end a little.

Received my 'Fathers Day' gift. Front and rear Hawk HT-10 race pads, Brembo rotors, and Super Blue Fluid. Got right on it, did a roadtest to bed in the pads. Wow these things stop the car. Very very loud, crazy brake dust, but amazing stopping power. So thats pretty much it, tires are the last thing that I 'need' to be track ready. Still trying to decide on a tire, want a DOT max performance tire, in my budget goal. Looking at Star Specs, NT-05, Proxes, RS-3s, XS, will decide soon. Nice, looking really good. Starspecs are a good tire but I wouldn't rule out the RS3. They love to perform when it's hot while the starspecs can get greasy when they get warm.

Bcleaver- Have you tried any of the other tires that I listed? The Starspecs and the RS3s are both suppose to be great, but $200 more a set than the Nt-05s or the Proxes R1R. I was leaning more towards the cheaper of the 'Max Perf' street tires. Free up money for another track day etc. My last track car a few years ago always ran the Kuhmo MX. I really liked the MX, price, performance. I think its replacement is the XS?

It becomes less relevant every day as there are some other fast tires in the mix they didn't try and it seems like the composition changes year to year. Most folks I know run the star spec or the rs-3. I haven't personally run anything besides those though so can't really make a first-hand comparison to the rest of the tires you mentioned. My gut says they're all pretty damn comparable (like a few tenths of a second per lap) and would go with the cheapest of the tires unless than tenth of a second is really important (like it ususally is in autox). Either way let us know what you decide and how you like them.

I picked up a used dash delete panel today. It was never installed by the previous owner, and saved me a few bucks. The old radio hole needed to go. The panel covered the whole center portion, even the HVAC control panel. I removed the AC, but I still want to have heat, and the controls for it. I had to cut the bottom of the panel off to leave the controls exposed. I am happy with it. Its cool : )

Since the car is just for track fun, not DD. I have been removing as much as I can to make the car as light as possible. The sound deadening material needed to go. It took some time but was removed very easily with some heat, and a scraper. I used brake cleaner to remove the adhesive residue left on the floors, and flat black spray paint to cover the bare areas. I still have a little more to do, the rear deck, and front up by the dash. The box of material was weighed when I finished.

I will update with total weight soon. My buddy works at a shop that has Longacre scales so we are going to corner balance it, I will take pics and post results. There isn't much more that can be removed, I want to keep heat, and pass seat. Over the winter I want to pull the dash, skin it, paint it, and remove all the wiring that went to removed modules, and removed components. Don't really think much weight is there, but its free and something to do. Eventually lightweight wheels, battery, flywheel, exhaust system, etc. save a little more.

I am not crazy about the grey 'rock guard' lower sills and two tone bumpers. I bought a M3 front bumper cover on Ebay, new door mouldings, and had my buddy at the body shop paint my sills and both bumpers. I am really happy with the way it turned out. The M bumper looks much more aggressive with the larger openings, and the splitter. While the bumper was off I secured all the brake cooling vents with extra zip-ties. They should be able to take some abuse and stay situated.

Hey guys.

Monk3y & Beau- I am still running the stock exhaust. I will probably just make one, 2.5" all the way back , delete cats, single pipe with a single muffler. Its not something I was too concerned about yet, but it is on the 'To Do' list. I want to replace it mainly for weight reduction. The stock exhaust is really heavy. I have looked at buying one a while ago, but the prices are a little ridiculous for a cat back, when the cats go almost all the way to the back.

Beau- I have the stock front sway bar, but removed the rear one due to the stiff rear spring rates. TRM recommended removing it. I have the largest diameter stock front E36 swaybar at 25.5mm. I installed front polly swaybar bushings with new endlinks. The stock E36 M3 front bar is a smaller bar due to the different mounting position on the strut housing.

Received the tires. I went with the Toyo Proxies R1R in 235-40-17. Down the road when I get wider lighter track wheels I will get wider rubber. I have 2 track days in September, so getting close.

I had the car at work friday. I got started by rolling the fenders, wanted to make sure no rubbing would occur now or in the future. Mounted and balanced the Toyo tires. Also in the looks dept. I threw the black kidney grilles on. Tires fit awesome and they have kung-fu grip. Everything feels great. I received my new up to date helmet. I am now complete and ready for track days with my project. I have many more plans for her, but she is good to go.

Derbo- Yes the new helmet is SA2010, replacing my old SA2000. I wanted to ask you- Where do you have the camera mounted for the view that shows your hood and forward view? It says "roof cam" , do you have it just before the sunroof? and are you just using a suction cup base? I liked that view the most in your Laguna video. I am so jealous thats your local track. I borrowed a GoPro from a buddy, and plan to get one when I can.

Gsen820- Yes, I have 2 days in Sept. & 2 days in Nov. at Summit Point. I have done @15 days at Summit in the past, and a few at VIR also. I would really like to try some other tracks too. Jersey isnt too far, Beaver Run doesnt look that far either. Its been a couple years since I have been out though. Need to dust off a bit.

Nice helmet. I was deciding between that one and the pyrotect airflow. I ultimately went with the pyrotect because of a sale at infineons store when i was there for a trackday.

I am using the suction cup from the hero2. I actually had the camera mounted right at the rain sensor location. I considered it a roof cam since it was about the same height as the roofline :)

Biggest thing I would emphasize is to bring glass cleaner and make sure that surface is clean! I lost a gopro1 cause of a semi dirty window. Amazingly that suction cup can hold very well even on the body/bumpers.

Sad part is Laguna has 90dB limit on open track days. It is lower than legal street limit of 95dB in California!

So the E36 gets its first track outing next weekend. 2 days at Summit Point with the Bmwcca. I am excited and ready to go.

I just wanted to share pics of our newest BMW. We needed something with more room for kid hauling, the VW wasnt cutting it anymore. I tried to convince the wife a minivan would be best, but she wouldnt go for it. So last Weds I spotted a fresh trade-in out back. Looked it over and made the purchase. 02 540i Sportwagon 78k miles. We took it on a family trip this weekend, it was fun, much cooler than a minivan, the mpg was ok for a V8, and it rolls out. ( I am already looking at wheels, and suspension...) Funny that it had to be green like the E36. I will add pics from the track next week. Enjoy

Hey guys. I just wanted to update, the car was awesome at the track. I had it at Summit Point on Sept 8th & 9th for a Bmwcca Hpde. We ran the Jefferson Circuit clockwise on Saturday, and counter clockwise Sunday. The car handled great, tires, seats, suspension, all was great. Passing much more powerful cars in my 325i was definitely cool. I have always tracked front drive cars in the past, so it was fun to drive the BMW. Being able to hit the skidpad in my own car was sweet. On the skidpad I was able to do full laps tail out, that felt awesome. I cant wait to go again and will be trying to make the next Bmwcca event Nov 17th & 18th on Summit Main Circuit. (Cody you are going also). Going to do some more maintenance items, and something with the exhaust next (I need some sound, and to loose that weight).

Three inch exhaust or nothing. Make sure you get a Burns Stainless merge to mount right at the headers. All the power is made there and everything back is just for floe and sound. And a single three will out flow a dual 2.5.

I did use my GoPro for the first time. I had some issues with it and only recorded my first two runs, and a instructor session. The battery life was shorter than I expected, and It was left on in between runs once... oops. I will get one posted up here in the next couple days. I will take the charger with me to the next event in November. Hopefully get a couple extra batteries too.

Just an update. I was looking over the car and noticed the guibo was looking a bit thrashed. So it was time for a new one. I researched it online before replacing it. Most DIY threads said remove exhaust, heatshield, drop center drivershaft etc. I just unbolted the guibo, used a prybar to remove the old one and installed the new one. Pretty easy and straight forward. I didnt really notice anything different when driving but its nice knowing its new. Hope everybody is doing good. See you next time.

Not really. I used a pry bar and the old one pretty much fell out on the floor. The new one was a little tougher to get back in since it was nice and solid. Maybe took about 30 minutes. I am not sure if the Zhp will be much different since it has a 6 speed, but the driveshafts shorter so may not matter. The center shaft has a telescoping section that allows it to compress a bit. I just pryed it back to the trans flange once I swapped guibos, but I read you can just use a longer bolt to pull it back also. The old one may have failed anyday. The rubber was crazy soft and squishy plus the cracks etc. I also found that old one was installed incorrectly, the bolts all in the same direction. There are arrows on the guibo for bolt direction. The trans side and shaft side go opposite directions. I dont know if it really matters but nice to know its installed correct.

I noticed a engine oil leak is starting to show. So yesterday I replaced the oil filter housing gasket. Not a bad job, but I had problems with coolant lines going into my airbox breaking (not the hose itself, but the plastic valve they attached to). Sprayed coolant all over the place. I bypassed the airbox, shortened the hoses, looped them together up under the intake. Then engine bay was degreased and cleaned. Its looking nice , clean, and dry now. Also washed and waxed the exterior. Hoping to do the exhaust next. See ya!

Just an update. Since its been so cold out recently the 325i has just been sitting in the garage. Its hiding from the ice, snow, & salty roads. Last time I drove the car I replaced the oil filter housing gasket & cleaned the engine. I still noticed a small amount of oil hanging out, found it to be the Vanos oil line seeping a little. I ordered and installed a new Vanos line with seals. Seems to be nice and dry now. I did the fan delete, electric fan install, & low temp thermostat a while ago. So while replacing the Vanos line I also installed a low temp fan switch. Now she is all ready for spring time and some track days. Go away winter! ;)

I decided to add some stickers previously recommended in this thread. I hooked up some matte black LTW Flag decals. Installed the front one, havent had time to get the rear done yet. It took alot longer than I thought it would to apply it properly. I'll add pics of the rear when I get it done. I also signed up for the first Bmwcca event at Summit Point in May. Very excited for spring, and getting back out on track. ;)

Hello. This is not related to the BMWs at all. When the E36 & E39 are hanging in the garage. The wife & I daily this VW Golf or our Honda CRV. Yesterday I installed Eibach Sportline springs, 18" R32 wheels, and wanted to post the pics. It makes for a better looking daily. 270k and still going strong.

As far as the BMWs, the E36 is working on an exhaust before my May track day. The E39 is working on springs and a set of either 19" BBS CH, or 17" Style 32s. My buddy has both sets of wheels, and we are just working it out ;)

I have a track day in a couple weeks. I really wanted to get the stock suit case muffler off the car & have some sound. I am going to make a custom exhaust, single pipe 2.5" or 3" all the way back, but no time at the moment. So for the time being, I purchased a Ebay SS rep catback. I installed the exhaust. It fits good after much tweaking etc. Its @14 lbs lighter, and has a nice sound to it. Its def louder than my stock exhaust, but not by much. Thanks for the compliments. I am having fun with it. It will back on the track in a couple weeks (cant wait).

After a few days of looking at new exhaust in my garage, I decided I do not like the rolled edge and cones in the tailpipe section. I decided to modify it. I used a grinder and cut @1 inch off of the tailpipes removing the rolled edge. I then used a pry bar to break welds on trumpet cone things and pulled them out. Last a heavy sanding disc was used to flatten out & smooth the tailpipe edges. I like it much better now & sound is better too.

Thanks! I installed BW wheel stud kit & BW camber shim kit today. I also added 5mm spacers to all 4 to insure no interference in front between the wheel and coilover. I had to go to my friend's shop to align my car (I am going to add 1 more shim to the front after my track day). The dealership where I work has a 80s alignment machine. It couldnt handle the negative camber, the lasers went off. But it turned out great. The car felt great on my hour ride home. I also received new gloves & helmet support. All ready for Hpde next weekend. Sorry crappy not smart phone pics.

The final #s I ended up w( -3.1 front camber w zeo toe, -2.2 rear camber w some toe in, dont remember exact rear toe off hand). I would like a little more negative in the front ( shooting for -3.5 front & -2.5 rear) so I will install the small shim in w the already installed medium shim (or maybe just the big shim). I dont have time to do it before next weekend and re-align so it can wait till I get back.

An unrelated note. I installed staggered Style 32 wheels on my 540iT. They look awesome. I also received used M5 front springs to hopefully bring it down just a little. The rear has air suspension. I can raise and lower the rear w the links. I will throw some pics up after I get the springs on. As much as 18mpg sucks, I love driving the 540iT.

It handled amazing, brakes amazing, the 3.91 rear was perfect for the track. 5th gear was just about redlined at end of main straight. I cant wait to get back out. I know what I need to practice - my downshifting, carrying more speed through turn 10, & I like to early apex turn 3 sometimes :(

Thanks guys. It is a fun track. I had a blast & I cant wait till the next track event.

Just an update. Nothing exciting. I gutted out the trunk lid & both rear doors of wiring harness, window motors, window lifters, clips, etc. I used a bolt and plastic roller to secure the glass into position. It was @20lbs worth of unused items. I purchased a set of used aluminum front door panels on BF, waiting on arrival. Thinking that next on the list will be a lightweight battery, full welded cage, painting the dash black, & a set of wider lightweight wheels. Having tons of fun with the car, but the bug to do things will not stop biting me.

Unrelated to the E36. I picked up a set of staggered Style 32 wheels for my E39. Installed them and front M5 springs. The springs did lower the front 1 inch even though I read otherwise online. I think my wagon had super offroad springs on it when I purchased it. I dig the wagon, but my wife keeps pressuring me to sell it. She wants something that gets better gas mileage. We will see....

If the car's computer is close to accurate @19 mpg. Thats mostly highway. I dont think the mpg is all that bad. We have a VW Golf, & Honda CRV that we use daily, both get in the mid 30s mpg. The VW has @300k miles now so she wants a replacement to drive every day (45 miles one way to work for her). I may make the 540it my daily driver & find her another VW.

I ended up at a friends house to look at his diesel VW Jetta last weekend. He helps run the SCCA autoX stuff in the DC Region here. He is building a E36 car for street touring and asked if he could throw my car on the autoX scales just to see where I was. Of coarse I said lets do it. The Budget Track Car is at 2680 lbs as it sits now. I think that's pretty awesome. Still using stock wheels, stock battery, stock exhaust (besides the muffler). So I am pretty sure getiing into 25XX lbs isn't going to be too bad from here. Since the car is just for fun and doesn't need to follow any rules, the diet will continue. I have grown tired of the tan dashboard in the track car. Getting the car weighed last week (2680lbs) has me itching to keep the diet going. Yesterday I removed the dashboard from the car. I stripped the underside of the dash of everything except the defrost vents. Then Plastidipped the dashboard flat black. It turned out great. While the dash is removed I found more sound deadening, unused brackets, insulation, etc. to remove. All together another 12lbs of 'stuff' thrown away. Also while the dash is out and the harness is exposed I am going to go through and remove the unused wiring to rear doors, trunk, everything removed. Gotta get her back together by next weekend :)

I also picked up a set of square BMW 17" LTW wheels from my buddy. They definitely need to be cleaned up a bit, but in pretty good shape. Maybe some Conti slicks would like to live on them? We will see. I really want some Apex Arc8s, but these wheels didn't cost me any $.

I agree with you, I am serious, just not that serious. The one spray can of plastidip maybe weighed a couple pounds, and I still have some in the can. I will definitely buy wheels that I like the look of, over ugly wheels that are a pound or two lighter per wheel. I still have to enjoy the look of my ride. :)

I was doing this harness thinning out job on the 325. Then after 5 hours of tracing individual wires back to wherever to remove them, I stopped. I had a large bag of removed wiring and I couldn't deal anymore. There is still a lot of unused wiring going to the old OBC computer, console switches, etc. I did completely remove both rear door harnesses, radio & speaker wiring, airbags, all trunk harness except for exterior lights...I will wait until winter when the car will be sitting in the garage longer. The dash now only takes @15 minutes to remove.

A package was delivered last week :biggrin containing a short shift kit using OEM parts, & a TRM shift knob. It was a very easy 20 minute install and shifts awesome. I really like the feel of the longer shift lever too.

I removed the seat slider from my drivers seat lowering the seat about a inch. The lower seating position is nice. I was able to move the seat more towards center without the slider and it feels more solid also. After lowering the seat the steering wheel was too high. E36 do not have a adjustable tilting wheel. I searched and found the solution. I removed the 2 tamper proof bolts holding the steering column up by the cluster. Using longer bolts and two 1/2" aluminum spacers I dropped the wheel into position. I tried a few different spacers and washers to get it just right. Now its perfect.

The next project. Deka Etx20L battery (rebadged for Napa). The stock battery weighed 42lbs. Working on a battery bracket now.

I removed the 42lb stock size battery & installed a 14.5lb Deka Etx20L. I purchased the needed battery post from Summit Racing. I was looking for something to make a bracket from at work. I found some old VW CD Changer brackets, and the Deka fit perfect. I bent the two verticle tabs down & made a tie down with a metal strap. Plasti-dipped the bracket for good looks. The best part is the CD Changer brackets mounting holes lined up perfectly with the two factory threaded holes in the battery compartment of the E36. Custom bracket, easy install, the diet continues.

I did a lot of research before purchasing the battery. Looking at Deka, Braille, Odyessy, etc. Many racers, autox'ers, use them and claim no problems. Some people said to use a trickle charger if the car sits, some say the battery doesn't last as long, but others say they've been running them for years. That's all fine with me. So may not last as long & it probably wouldn't be the best in cold winter, but I don't plan to drive the car in winter anyway. You could always do a stock battery in winter & rock a lightweight one for the rest of the year.

Not much to update. We sold our 540iT last week. It is being replaced with a 2000 328i. I will add a picture of our new E46 when we pick it up weds. I am happy to get another E46 to play with. Only updates for Budget Track Car is a monster ground cable. The small battery has been great so far. I usually only drive the car once every week or two. So it sits a bit & starts right up every time. I think a trickle charger for the winter is in order. It definitely will be parked longer in the winter. I will be changing all the fluids, looking things over, etc for the Sept BMW CCA track weekend at Summit Point. Excited to get on the track again, cant wait. :)

The 2 day BmwCca HPDE at Summit Point on the Jefferson last weekend was awesome. Stayed dry both days, had a good instructor, learned some things, met new people, good stuff. I was in A-Group this time which allows passing anywhere on the track. That was different, very fun. I was one of four cars that were not M3s in my group. The car performed great & I cant wait to do it again. Next event is on the Shenandoah Circuit in November.

November event was awesome. My grades were good enough that I was invited to join the Instructor Academy for my local cca chapter. I had my first IA day the Friday before the event. It was great in IA we had the whole track to ourselves & hours on the skid pad. Then Sat & Sun the HPDE was a blast. Again learning some skills & having fun. The budget track car is still getting compliments and performing amazing.

Its been a while. The E36 has been hanging in the garage the last couple months while the snow keeps falling. The first track day of the year is in three weeks. E36 is leaking power steering fluid, so some parts are ordered.

Hey guys. Yes it was Summit Point Main last weekend. 3 day event with the BMW club. High Friday was @29f, way too cold. Still had a blast rocked the Conti All Seasons on the LTW wheels. They actually were better than I thought they would be. Saturday & Sunday was a bit warmer, closer to 40f. So the Toyo tires went on for the weekend. Definitely the coldest track event I have ever done. Still a great time. I did learn some new skills, and worked on my existing ones.

The next event is in April on the Shenandoah Track. Hope to have some nicer weather ;) Nothing planned for the Track Car but maintenance. I do have the urge for more power. So.. cams.. S50.. S52.. S54.. I don't know. Budget is tight, but I am going to do something.

Haha, I ended up running Summit Main the morning after a heavy snowfall at an event in March many years ago. Track was plowed but the melting snow made for a very unique wet/dry/wet lapping experience. I ended up spinning out inside at turn two due to a full-throttle power-out in my old E30. Managed to get 3 out of four wheels buried in the snow, but one rear wheel was miraculously still on the track. After a quick pit, back at it. Not a fan of cold track events though as you can't easily get any heat in your tires. Nonetheless, looks like you had a fun time and made the most of the conditions. Hopefully April offers better weather!

Hey Brett. That sounds like you had a fun ride lol. It was definitely weird enough to see snow out in the grass. I am glad it was not on the track. You should try and make it out again sometime, it'll be fun . Any of the other local guys should check it out too (Cody where are you buddy?). A day of fun surrounded by bimmers and driving on a racetrack. Any one interested hit me up.

On a side note. I just installed Bilsteins/H&R springs, Fcabs, coolant system, and picked up a set of 19" BBS CH wheels for my E46 daily car. Its starting to look pretty good. Once I get the tires mounted I will throw up some pics. Going to try and get my wife to take it to the track by the end of the year. :biggrin

Last week I installed a used X-Brace with install kit, and a set of new roundels. My old roundels are starting to flake pretty bad. The bar feels good, tighter steering feel. The emblems just look so much better. I signed up for a car control clinic on the skid pad at Summit Point for next weekend. Next BmwCca track event is in three weeks. Pretty excited, hoping for nicer weather than the last freezing temp event.

Hello again. Last week I ordered and installed polly bushings for my front sway bar. I am using a stock front sway bar in the largest stock size 25.5mm. I went on a trip to a local BMW racers home to pick up aluminum door panels. After drooling on his E36 race car for a couple hours (definitely the meanest E36 I have seen so far), I drove home and started the install. I removed all the wiring from the door for everything but window motor. I then decided it was a good idea to cut numerous holes in the door.... A few pop rivets later, and no more tan door panels.

Again my not so smart phone takes crappy pics.

The car I had the pleasure of checking out weighs 2500 with driver, and was trimmed beyond anything I could ever do. It had a crazy roll cage with subframe tie ins, shock reservoir mounts, fuel cell, ptg wide body, etc. S54 power, E46 M Abs system, So much carbon I didn't want to go, I could have kept staring for a while. I promised no pictures until after racing season starts for him. So this is a doctored, dark picture of this mean machine.

QC_ZHP I do not know of a build thread for the car. I did take a few more pictures of the car. I will post them as soon as I transfer them to my computer. It is pretty awesome.

So I had another track weekend last week. The whole week leading up to my Fri-Sun event on track was full of stressing lol. A couple times I thought I would be cancelling out.

Mon- car wouldnt start (power on, but no crank)
Tues- still trying to figure it out, but after hours with my meter and wiring diagrams found my EWS system had failed. Was able to bypass it and wire straight to ignition switch.
Weds- My buddy failed my car tech inspection for play in outer ball joint on left front arm. Trying to get a new set of arms ASAP. Not happening, or looking good.
Thurs- Actually found a set of new Lemforder control arms, got them installed. When I left my shop at 5pm I found my alignment was now way off. I rushed to my friends shop and we got the car on the alignment rack and dialed in perfect. Just in time to get home and pack my car for the weekend.

The event was on the Shenandoah Circuit at Summit Point. A great time as usual. I had a few good experiences. For the first time I achieved a perfect score on the skidpad (it felt really awesome). I had my first 4 off grass ride (it was a "no brake exercise", went into a turn way too hot). That was a good learning experience, no damage to the car, was right back on track after inspecting the car. I had my instructor amazed when I told him my car was a 325i, not a M3. He told me I was cooking and could not go around the track any faster. It was a very good feeling. Now I just need some more power (coming soon).

I am planning on purchasing a used S5X engine in the near future. I plan to have the engine at my shop so I can take my time building it. No rush on the engine build, but it is going to happen.

So as far as power for now... S50 camshafts, and a WAR chip tune for the camshafts. All the research I had done on this cam swap shows slight loss in low end, but 20whp gain above 5500 rpms. With the 3.91 rear in my car, I do not think I will ever notice the loss in low end. I think a 20whp gain should keep me happy temporarily.

OK update time. So in the quest for more ponies... M50 camshafts have been removed. Vanos seals have been replaced. S50 Camshafts installed. Replaced valve cover gasket, vanos gasket (obviously) and the awesome little doughnuts on the valve cover. While I had things torn apart, I cleaned the throttle body and K&N airfilter. Repainted my valve cover blah blah. Side note- WAR chip has been ordered, awaiting arrival. The WAR chip looks pretty awesome, USB plug on it so files can be downloaded, tweaked, etc as mods keep going. Very stoked. Even without the S50 cam specific chip you can definitely feel the extra pull up in the top of the RPMs. Again very stoked. :biggrin:biggrin:biggrin

Today I recieved and installed the "Miller WAR Chip". All I have to say is Awesome! I downloaded the M50/S50 cam file. Added it to the chip via the WAR program. Roadtest, all the loss of low end is gone. The low end feels great, the upper Rpm feels awesome. At around 4500 rpm the motor starts to pull really nice. It is a great improvement over the normal M50, and it pulls the S50 cam mod all together. I am stoked on it. It is the generic base file for my set-up. I have two friends with dynos so i will be dialing this chip in custom asap. It has a usb plug on the chip, and you can basically adjust everything, timing, fuel, vanos start/end etc. I am very happy with this mod, and think it can only get better with a little dyno time. Next track day in a couple weeks, looking forward to seeing the difference actually at work. Will update after trackday. I will also post the dyno works after I have the time to work with it. Track weekend on Summit Point Main 5/30-6/1 went great. The car performed awesome, and the new cams made it more enjoyable. We had perfect sunny mid 80s weather for the whole weekend :) I realized that my rear Toyo tires are spent and need replacement. The rear was a little loose, but it did make it fun too. The fronts were replaced a couple months ago, so I was gonna order rears, but then this happened....

Not worth washing your car before a track day. The skid pad really shines it up.

I scored a set of new TR Motorsport (Enkie) MT1R wheels in 17x9. A trade for labor working on a friend's Jetta TDI. I dig them, the color, the low weight, and most of all the width. So I am trying to decide on new tires again. This time I think I am going R-Compound in a 255-40-17. Yes I own a fender roller. I have a couple months until I am on track again. So I have some time to figure it out. I also picked up a used 'Bimmerworld Challenge Intake'. Basically just an aluminum air box, but the price was right, and I had some alcohol persuasion at the time. I need to stay away from forum classifieds, Ebay, etc when drinking. Its bad news.

Thanks. The DS1 wheels currently on the car weight 22lbs a piece. The new TR wheel is 16lbs. It will be a nice savings, but I am going to go with wider tires, so they may add a little back. I will weight each with tire mounted afterwards.

Tire Rack sold that size last year (it is no longer available). My friend had bought three sets for his AutoX E36. Then decided this year he was running a Miata. He sold the 2 sets that he actually ran on the car, and I ended up with the new set. I am definitely cool with the deal we worked out.

So I recently have been working on some maintenance items. Replaced 02 sensor, Knock sensor, both timing chain tensioners, and installed the Vanos anti-rattle ring. Vanos sounds much better now. I also ordered a set of Nitto Nt-01 tires in 255-40-17. I test drove the car to work one day for checking fitment. Wow. I haven't had R-comp tires before. They stick very well. Excited to try them on a track asap.

Very nice! Since you haven't had R-Comps before, here are some tips:
Don't drive this car in the rain with those tires on or you could find yourself in a bit of a pickle. Also, R-Comps need to be warmed up first before they grip very well, so if you ever drive it when it's slightly cooler out, they will probably be slippery. ;)

Thanks for the compliments on the wheels, and the tire tips. I am going to a BMW skid pad day tomorrow at the track. It should be pretty fun. I will see how good the tires grip on the wet track.

I installed a set of new OEM type aftermarket head lights yesterday. The stock ones looked OK but were getting foggy. I buffed them many times, but most of the fog was on the inside. So new lights on, much better.

Yesterday I attended a Skid Pad day, it was great fun. Running 3 cars on the skid pad together allowed everyone to get a lot of time out there. Half way through we swapped direction to go clockwise.

My awesome wife went with me. She rode shotgun a bit, and shot a couple pics. I am going to have her out on track next year in the E46. ;)

There was a VW-Audi track event last weekend. It was called "Dub Deliverance". It was held on the Shenandoah Circuit at Summit Point. It was sponsored by VWoA, NGP Racing, APR, etc. I was somehow able to sneak my BMW into the event, all that talk about how I've been a VW dealer tech for the last 15 years etc. It was a great day, super fun, fresh R-comps, track car performed awesome, just rolling. I had the only non VW-Audi on the track :mwah

I was running solo in the Black Group, which is the most advanced group in Track Daze events. I like to think I just had superior skills, and weaponry. :)

Hello. The next track day is the first week of November. The 'Budget Track Car' is all ready to go! Until then I have been looking for 'Project Fun Daily'. Going through Craigs for a while, finally found what I wanted. Since my wife drives our E46, the track car is a garage queen, and our CRV is not so 'fun' to drive. So another ongoing BMW project starts now. So far I am really digging this car, its a fun little ride.
