Anyone try these? Wondering if they really make a difference, or not so much...

That's what I use. The first time I changed my filter (1st month I had the car back in 2004) I put a in charcoal filter. It made a huge difference, but you should have seen the filter that came out, fwewww, it might have been original.

negative, there is a plain paper filter and an activated carbon filter. P/N 590 is plain, P/N 591 is carbon.
I run carbon. Pretty sure carbon is OEM.

^ I've seen both but no one seems to carry the non carbon filter.

Looks like BMW has superceded the non carbon and carbon filter to one part number from what I can tell. 64 31 9 071 935.

pelican parts stocks 3 different brands (corteco-micronair, mann, airmatic) of plain paper filter.
Price wise they are roughly equivalent...within a few bucks...to the activated carbon by brand, but the genuine bmw carbon is about 40% more.

Just to update with info I found and some part numbers for the 2 types and their part #s from different makers.
OEM is Corteco-Micronair.

There are definitely two kinds. The activated charcoal in theory is the better filter. It'll appear darkish/grey in color rather than white.

This one is my favorite so far. Metal construction and a proper seal against the filter housing. Smell is noticeably improved compared to the Mann carbon filter I was running before

Looks like a good option and I'm due soon. Gonna go with this one. Thanks for the info.

So I finally changed the CAF on Gretchen with an OEM MicronAir (Corteco) Charcoal infused version ($28)
...By the looks of it, the car still had the factory one, and it was pretty dirty, but IDK if it was very nasty, like I expected it to be.
Anyway, compared to the Elantra this was so easy to do, I was done in like 2 minutes.
Somehow I had the feeling the new one fit in mmore solidly and snug, compared to the factory one...

I don't think the carbon one actively detects anything, right? It's just that carbon has odor neutralizing properties. :dunno

Probably bogus then - I am sure I don't know much - I read it somewhere, don't remember where now.
