ZHP officially sold - 11AUG2018

I was first introduced to my ZHP in February 2011 when the previous owner, a BMW mechanic where I used to service my ///M, asked me to update his Navi firmware to v.32. Fast forward a few months and I now have my new ZHP project. [emoji4]

Feel free to provide feedback and comments on my project thread [emoji106]

My ZHP at time of purchase - May 2011:

2003 BMW 330i ZHP
6-Speed Manual Transmission
Imola Red with Alcantara Interior
ZKW Bi-Xenon Headlights (with issues free of charge!!!)
LCM s/w ver 3.56
Alcantara Steering Wheel
Alcantara interior
BMW Performance Shift Knob vice ZHP shift knob
Silver Cube Trim - original worn pieces
BMW Factory 6-disc CD changer
Rear subframe reinforced
35% window tint
Navi Firmware s/w vers. 4-1/01
105,952 miles

Cost during initial purchase: $44,295.00

My purchase price: $11,800

And in dire need of a good detail, pin stripe delete, and TLC [emoji4] Time to rescue this poor poor ZHP! :thumbsup
Previous owner was kind enough to leave dents in the front driver's fender and driver's door.

One of the selling points that put me over the edge with my ZHP is that the previous owner had the rear subframe reinforcement done as a preventive maintenance measure. There were no tears on the rear subframe to begin with, which made me feel good. At the time....he seemed honest and up front with all issues that the car had, not that there were many major issues to worry about...

A few drawbacks to my ZHP was that there were no maintenance history (paperwork or receipts) which I have corrected from the point when I purchased this car, and that the previous owner (the BMW Tech) couldn't tell me anything about any maintenance that he did other than the rear subframe reinforcement, so with every maintenance and mods that I do to this car, I am retaining all my receipts and documenting all maintenance through the use of an excel spreadsheet that I have made.

Thanks Adam and Dane :)

Dane, no I'm in the process of deleting my pin stripes all together. I suppose if it only had the black pin stripes I would be okay but having the white there as well was a little over the top for me. Personally, I prefer the clean all Imola look on my sedan :thumbsup

I had an "ah-ha" moment. I know why you like my car so much! She reminds you of your old beauty! They could have been sisters.

On to the ZHP, IMO she has come leaps and bounds from when you purchased her. Absolutely love the direction you went. And as much as I'd like to see black wheels on her, the set she wears now looks fantastic (which, btw, I couldn't find listed in your mods). She's a real beauty Charlie! Carry on with your tasteful modding!

The amazing thing about Charlie's cars, is he has the uncanny ability to make a stock BMW paint job look like a $30k custom finish at the Pebble Beach concourse. His Ti silver M3's finish absolutely looks like liquid mercury.

Thanks Ryan! Since purchasing my ZHP, it's been a long and ongoing process. It had some issues when I purchased her but I knew that I was the guy to bring her back to her past glory....

In time I will get everything sorted out and she will look just as awesome as your "Lucy"...:biggrin

Today I succeeded in getting my Aux input installed. With the Nav display, it was different from attaching the Aux input with Business Radio since I did not have to worry about inserting the aux connector into the plug harness in back. All I had to do was attach my aux cable to a connector that was wrapped to the cabling just to the left of the Nav radio. There was no need to pull out the Nav radio... all I had to do was pull out the center vent, attach the aux cable to the connector and then run the cable. Very easy process :thumbsup

Now I have both bimmers with Aux inputs....:)

M0nk3y, modifying the shifter knob was sourced out to someone from M3Forum. Hooking it up is a very easy process. Tap two wires to the ashtray light and you're set. When you turn on the parking/driving lights the shift knob will light up as you see in the pics. Thanks for your knob I wouldn't have been able to get this project done without it :thumbsup

When my ///M3 side mirrors are ready and I have new motors to use, I am planning to make up another detailed DIY for swapping the "ribbon connector" motors to the M3 mirror retrofit for sedans. The baseplates need modification to make them work on sedans whereas for coupes they are direct replacements. For Lucy, the ///M3 side mirrors should fit perfectly and will look awesome :) The only thing you will have to confirm is whether or not you have the 6-pin or 12-pin connector on your mirrors. The ///M3 uses 12-pin connectors.

As Kris mentioned the carbon fiber is visible only from the top center edge of my CSL bootlid lip as shown in my sig. :thumbsup From the side no one would even notice it from a driving standpoint.....very subtle....

cakM3
01-06-2012, 03:08 AM
The sharkfin will have a SIRIUS antenna integrated inside it vice the BMW Assist antenna that it comes with. Much better place to use the SIRIUS antenna IMO. Then it will be routed exactly the same way the OEM antenna is routed. Even got the grommet for the wire.

For those who have the sharkfin on their cars and have not activated BMW Assist, their sharkfin antenna are nonfunctional as well...see pic of my ///M in my sig....

cakM3
01-06-2012, 07:55 PM
all you have to do is get the small high gain SIRIUS antenna from ebay. this antenna fits inside the sharkfin housing. What I did was take apart the sharkfin antenna, take out the integrated antenna, modify the baseplate to mount the SIRIUS antenna to it and close everything up. Then all you have to do is to route the wires underneith the window gasket and mount the sharkfin.

Looking great Charlie!

FWIW, my Sirius antenna is velcroed underneath the rear parcel shelf & works well 99.9% of the time in mostly rural driving. I like the fin, but was worried about running the wire/hole, so I left it all inside as stealth Sirius setup.

Keep up the good work on your car!

When I had my first bimmer (a '99 323i), I used an OEM sharkfin and converted it so that I could replace the non-functional bee-stinger antenna with a "functional" sharkfin. Yes I happen to like the sharkfin antenna but wanted a functional one. I figured the SIRIUS solution was best.

With my ZHP, I ran the wiring similiarily to the OEM wires and used the OEM grommet. I now have a similar setup like my ///M and can go between both cars with my StarMate 4 receiver. :thumbsup

I use Bavarian Technic. It does everything right to a dead fuse. It connects to a laptop where the software is installed. The cable has a built in chip with firmware. I've had it for about 3 years and Im able to view and reset all codes plus more. One great thing about the scanner is our ZHP DME is on the list to choose from.

You just need a VAGCOM KKL cable, no need for an overpriced $100 cable. Mine cost me twenty-something bucks shipped.

I looked back my eBay emails from when I purchased it and found the link. It turns out that item # is still valid, and leads straight to the cable I purchased!
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=310271950703#ht_3441wt_1163

Same seller as well. That should be the exact one. It has the correct FT232RL chipset. This one is less than $20 shipped. It will require the soldering, but with the correct drivers it will work as intended.

hijack...

So, with spencers' help last night, I went through all my VCP drivers, uninstalled and reinstalled them, bla bla bla, and ultimately got the ECS tuning vagcom cable working, at least on paper. it is the FT232RL chipset, i soldered 7 and 8, used the FTDI drivers and M.Prog to adjust the EEPROM. TBD if I am able to code with it. Still haven't had time to get out to the car with the laptop.

@ derbo, BP is coming over this Saturday so we will have my program issues sorted out hopefully. Otherwise like spencers recommended, I will have to set up a Bootcamp partition on my Macbook (other laptop) and reinstall everything. I will update results over the weekend.

Very early this morning I pulled the trigger and finally purchased my BMW Performance BBK from ECS Tuning. After seeing this kit on BP's ZHP for the past few weeks, I finally succumbed to my ZHP's will and got it :) Although I only had to pay out $1,200 when I purchased this kit. As you can see the price has risen since last summer!

I've tracked a ZCP M3 and those brakes feel good out of the wrapper. Your other option is to go 996 brake calipers ;)

Our brakes are confirmed to work fine with our stock rears. No need to spend money on the rears; it'll get you nowhere, IMO.

Thanks Johnny :)

The 323i was my first bimmer and I learned a lot from owning it such as the importance of doing a PPI. I didn't do that with this car and ended up having my rear subframe tear. Fortunately there was a subframe lawsuit going on and I was able to get mine repaired free of cost (to me) and everything was sorted out. The current owner has a well sorted and maintained 323i and she's very happy with the car.

I have taken that knowledge and applied them to both my ///M and ZHP. The ZHP is my current project and as you can see by my project thread, I'm having lots of fun....There have been suggestions given to me as to what to do and this only adds to the fun part of ownership. I am going along a path of modding my ZHP....I know what my vision for it is but we'll see if I end up there :thumbsup

I will be down for this year's annual ZHP Mafia reunion along with the New England crew so if you are there....keep an eye out for my ZHP :biggrin I'll be there!

@derbo: I hear you but as BP have stated it would be overkill......perhaps my OCD will kick in sometime and find another solution....hmmmmm :) !

@Testarossa: thank you :thumbsup

Got the MacBook/SSS-DIS software issues resolved with a help from a very trusted friend :) Originally, I was planning to use VMWare fusion and my MacBook Air to run everything but that was not stable enough so I ended up grabbing my "spare" MacBook to set up a bootcamp partition and install Windows to run the SSS-DIS software. Spencers recommended this setup and I now see why. Thanks Spencers for your help :fistpump

@derbo, I think your best bet is to set up a bootcamp partition like Spencers recommended and set up your s/w afterwards. It's too bad that we will soon need to rebuild our calipers. I just found out that same day that these calipers do not like track days. The pistons crack and disintegrate. BS if you ask me.
But then I'm also told there is a rebuild kit that replaces the pistons with StopTech ones that handle high temperatures just fine. I'll have to see if I could find this kit. Just a shame that I have to spend another ~$200-300 on a kit that already cost me a grand and change. Oh well, still cheaper than the next step up kit!

Let me know when you find it! I'm probably going to to be in the same situation too. Luckily my pistons caps aren't cracked. They are ceramic caps that have a heating problem. If they are not cracked yet you have the option to go titanium shim backing plates.

That's crazy!

Charlie do you track? And do you choose the ZHP or the ///M?

Ryan,

Right now I don't track either cars. I do a lot of long distance driving from the Providence area to Washington DC when on business trips (///M or ZHP), and Providence to Iowa (///M only) so right now I just want to have both cars set up for highway cruising. With the ZHP, I will eventually supercharge it. With that said, I'm upgrading everything such that the supercharger will be the last mechanical component to my madness...:)

Brakes will be done....next will be my entire cooling system.....then coilovers.....and so on.....cosmetics will be the very last thing I will be doing to the ZHP and when that happens it will be awesome.....the problem is time.....how long will this take me??? :biggrin

Ryan,

Right now, I will most likely keep them as a road warriors. I would like to track but am more worried about wrecking my cars.....I suppose if I just go to some track sessions and "observe" I might have a change of heart and then track. Not sure at that point if I will track the ///M or "supercharged" ZHP...maybe both, but this will be many years down the road after my daughter is finished with college. Right now sorting out the ZHP is my priority (cooling system refresh and suspension overhaul) before my daughter goes off to college after next year. Then I will have a 4 year lapse while helping my daughter get through college...:)

After that, the fun begins!

derbo,

You're probably right on this but the reason I'm thinking like this is because I want to get my ZHP to where my ///M is. Even though I have heard that the ///M is awesome 'out of the box' to track, I've spent so much more on mine to get it where it is that I don't want to track it.

Parts for the ZHP are cheaper than they are for the ///M so if I were to do something 'stupid' it won't cost me as much as compared to the ///M to repair it. Anyway thats my thought. Besides, my current goal is to get my ZHP to perform close to my ///M :)

derbo
02-18-2012, 09:12 AM
I can chase stock M3s on corners. They can outperform me on the straights but I come right back at them on the straights. At least relatively bone stock M3s with suspension.

I started tracking with a bone-stock ZHP. The more parts you put on, the more you will be reluctant to race. I started bone stock so I would be more comfortable with the car at the limits. As I went along I am continuously improving as a driver as well as adding additional parts to help decrease those laptimes!

I love chasing M3s at this point. They get me on straights but its OH so fun on the corners keeping up with them.

Track duty is always good. Go when you feel ready. :) I did a cooling system overhaul and brakes before I went to the track. I went through OEM rotors/pads, then OEM rotors + cool carbon pads, then OEM rotors + Carbotech XP10/XP8 pads (which were amazing btw.) Then I went to the 135i BBK carbotech xp10 on the track. Your setup should be amazing once you get it all ready!

Wait till you get some real brake pads for those calipers. You will be amazed at the braking power :)

derbo,

You are right, I decided that I will be looking to track the ZHP after I get a few more systems overhauled. Now that I think about it, it is better to track before supercharging....I will take you up on this advice but since I'm already at 119k on my ZHP, it only makes sense to overhaul my cooling system completely as well as my suspension. After that, I think I will be looking to track :biggrin

If I have any questions on what brake pads to use I will ask :thumbsup Thanks again!

I always understood the concept of undriving the accessories, but i'm not sure what that does to a water pump slowing it down? Wouldn't you want that to be at normal speed? The alternator makes sense, but slowing down the water pump doesn't to me.

I agree. Learn the car and its limits when the limits are much much lower. This way when the limits are at higher speeds, you can feel a lot more comfortable when things get "squirrelly"

I also agree that it doesnt make much sense to underdrive the water pump considering the known coolant system issues with our cars, the only reason I'm personally even considering doing it is because I bought the Samco silicone coolant hose kit which supposedly lowers the temp of the coolant, though not sure how it does that since it's just a hose... I would also say that if you install the Stewart High Flow Water Pump it shouldn't be an issue to underdrive that (also a planned purchase for my eventual coolant rebuild)

John,

I'm getting excited as well! Just when I'm looking at catching up on all my bills something else comes along. I'm going to jump on this strut brace....talking about a rare acquisition!!! My ZHP has come a long way but still has some more improvements to be made....this is what makes this so addicting. I just put on my style 135's with 10mm spacers front and 12mm spacers rear....really love the stance. Once I get my new strut bar installed, I can look at getting a set of coilovers sometime in Aug/Sept to complete the setup. Once all my maintenance is complete I will be looking to do cosmetic corrections to some dents I inherited from the previous owner....all part of my ZHP project.

Thanks John and Ryan! While installing this strut brace, Steve came up with an awesome solution to modding the battery terminal such that we wouldn't have to make any cuts to existing wiring (hood alarm switch) and still use the existing mount location for the hood switch. Steve started with his and after getting his installed, I liked it so he did the mods to my battery terminal. I love the result and as far as I'm concerned, it works for me. As you all can see, there's plenty of clearance to the strut bar using this "slight" mod. :biggrin

Hmm. I like it. I may have to do the same. I wonder if I have to get a new terminal.

Wish I'd known about the mod to the mod before I did mine, good stuff.

Funny thing is that I myself did not know about this mod until I met Steve at the auto hobby shop where we mounted our strut bars. Steve and I talked about it and, at first I was skeptical, but when I saw Steve finish his mod, I told him that I wanted to do the same thing. I'm glad I did. It looks great in my opinion and the best part is that the hood switch didn't have to be relocated so I didn't have to cut and splice to do this mod...:) Hopefully, Steve will chime in and explain more about his mod.

Since I will be driving my ZHP to the annual event, those of you who will be there will be able to see exactly what was done. :thumbsup

Is it getting the bar on, or do those two items (batt term, and hood sw) actually hit it when it's installed?

Looksing goooood.

Thanks DW,

The batt term left in place will prevent the strut bar from lining up. You won't be able to mount the strut bar until you relocate the batt term, too much interference. What Steve came up with was a great alternative to the installation procedure developed by BMW for their Performance Strut Bar.

Ok. Just wondering. I had same issue with Cusco.

Fixed by removing 3 FSM nuts, then jacking up front right corner so the FSM studs were flush with tophat. Then I just slid it in.

I'm adding this part to my project thread but only wish I took more detailed pictures as Steve modified the battery terminal box. Anyway, here are the pictures from our BMW Performance Carbon Fiber Strut Bar installation in our ZHP's.

Many thanks to Steve since he told me about the "spare" strut bar :thumbsup

John,

Steve allowed me to take his Twin-Screw ZHP out for a spin.....man!!! Is his ZHP fast!!! It's total addiction....sort of like the feeling I always get driving my ///M after weeks of not driving her...:)

After driving Steve's ZHP twice, I realized that between the ///M and the ZHP, I will be adding the Twin Screw to my ZHP first...:)

That's why I am doing all of these mods first....it will be awhile before I am able to add the twin-screw though....daughter will be going to college after next year so I got to focus on her for a few years....after that....it's engine rebuild and twin-screw time :biggrin

The ///M will be getting a full CSL brake package, performance cams, CSL exhaust, and CSL airbox after I get done with my ZHP.....going to be fun :thumbsup Anyway.....that's the plan...:)

Lookin really good Charlie, when it's all done we can run my C38 vs your twin screw when they are both installed!

I will post a detailed description of how to mod the positive jumping terminal as soon as I get a chance. I am currently skiing in western mass with the family.

Like Charlie mentioned, we just got lucky when I wasn't real happy with BMW's mod recommendation and started experimenting with something else.

On other thing that is really nice with the TS2 is the day to day practicality. It really adds a ton of torque and makes each grocery run or commute fun.
