Yesterday I decided to paint my aFe CAI top cover plate to black. For some reason the silver cover looked out of place with all the black in the engine bay, so I painted it to match. I like the results.

I agree John, the frozen black mirrors would look good but how would you maintain this color, let alone clean them w/o losing the matte color over time?

Thanks :thumbsup I know its about time I got these side mirrors done. The hard part will be transferring over the mirror motors. There's no mount for them, going to have to make one. That's the hard part...

@ jayjay and Derek, thanks guys! :)

Tried moonshine for the first time, ah rookie! Mind if I ask which kind? Last year they legalized the sale of Moonshine in NC's ABC stores. I'm a bit of a connoisseur.

Anyways, I can't wait to see those mods mounted. The M3 mirrors are one of my favorite mods and the lip is just delicious!

Thanks Ryan! Not sure what type of moonshine but it had strawberries in it. Tasted good....gave me that warm all over feeling and cured my cough :) This weekend will be a busy weekend. Getting my mods installed. Leaving my ZHP at my friend's body shop so they can take their time and do it right. This guy is the only person I have met so far who can match the color of new paint to what is on your car so I trust him to get it right :biggrin Can't wait to get this done :)

Chad,

I don't know of a way to convert the wired to ribbon. From what I have seen, the only way to make M3 side mirrors work is to change over the ribbon motors onto the M3 mirror housing assembly. You will have to take your time here and get the mounting points for the original motor right. Ask BP...it requires time and patience but in the end is well worth the work, imho. I will be modifying my mirror baseplates tomorrow evening when I stop over to the body shop and then spending some time over the next week or so getting the mirrors mounted and set up. Can't wait to get this all done....it will be one step closer to perfection :)

Chad.... I can't wait to see your ZHP after the repaint and updated calipers...should be looking sweet :thumbsup

Ive been reviewing schematics all night and have a few wiring projects I'd like to try out... I'd love to find a way to do this mod with wiring/module mods... I can't think anymore, will have to try the wiring later this week after my other projects and school work is done.

As much as I hate the delays, I don't want to rush on this as I want everything perfect. He is involved in racing and racing season is just beginning to start so I have to work around his schedule. Which shop did you end up taking it to?

Kris,

I have a friend from work who restores cars on the side. He has done a very good job repainting my ///M when I replaced the rear apron and bootlid so I am going with him for my current updates. Pricing has been very fair.

I acquired an LCM from an 06 ///M that I will have recoded to match my ZHP and then add the one touch triple blink feature. This is more for convenience. A side benefit of having this will be auto headlights but that will be later. :)

There is a place that will perform the necessary coding to make this work: RPM Motorsport LTD. Just found out my ZHP will be delayed another week but I would rather have that and ensure everything is done right rather than have it this week with issues needing to be sorted out. In the end it will be worth it. :thumbsup

Good thing is that required trimming on both sides of my mirror mounting points have been done IAW Rouge Engineering DIY, and the base plates have been satisfactorily test fitted in place.

Now the base plates will be wet sanded, painted glossy black and wet sanded, and then cleared. Then I have 4 additional holes to drill on my door where the mirror mounts (2 per side). Once that is done, I will be stopping by again to "personally" put together my mirrors and then mount them.

My friend isn't too comfortable with messing around with the ribbon cables so I will do this. I promise to have more updated pics when this happens.

Thanks everyone :) Yeah, these guys do an amazing job and this is his hobby. Imagine that, a guy who diggs cars so much that he does this on the side to his normal everyday job. I had him restore the back of my ///M after it got damaged (hence the carbon fiber CSL bootlid) and he matched the paint perfectly. Even in bright sunlight, you can't tell what was repainted. Amazing work.

The only problem is that I have to exercise patience, which I am, and work with them while they are doing my project. Good part is that I get to help out whenever I can and this adds to the fun. I know the end result will be well worth it but when you guys see me rollin' in with blue painter's tape all over be sure to take a pic because I'm sure it will look goofy (Imola with blue painter's tape)....I can only imagine the sight :biggrin

Actually, if you take your time ribbons are not too hard to re-route from one mirror assembly to another. I have done BP's mirrors and did not have any issue whatsoever. You can't force anything and just have plenty of patience. Personally, if I had the option, I'd rather be the one doing it... :)

Thanks Jon! At first I was going to paint the whole mirror Imola but then I figured having the glossy black base plate would be more suited to my ZHP so I went with it. Glad I did :thumbsup

Your help was instrumental in my mounting my OEM M3 side mirrors, thanks bro :thumbsup Guess I will now have to update my sig :p

ZHP is almost ready for the meet....still have a few more things to do to get her ready :)

For those wondering, I sourced my OEM M3 side mirrors from a forum member at E46Fanatics. He parts wrecked M3's and I was able to get a complete black interior from him for my ///M and oval rear view mirrors as well as side mirrors. The OEM M3 side mirrors can be found on ebay as well :thumbsup

In a heartbeat. Yeah, it was work but after doing it....I learned a lot and am now in a position to help others out. In fact, I will be going up to Mass next weekend to help out a fellow forum member on his bimmer. He's excited and I'm just happy to be able to do this for someone.

I really love the look and I feel this is something that ZHPs should have come with from the factory. Since it has been tweaked by Motorsport, or BMW Individual, I think adding some elements from the ///M, not all, would have been appropriate but that's my humble opinion. This matches the lines of the 3-series and is way better than the sedan "square" mirrors I had earlier. This may not be for everyone and that's okay, but I like them...:wub

Your coupe will look totally sick with the OEM M3 side mirrors on them :drool When you have some time, I say do it...:thumbsup

At least you won't have to worry about modifying the baseplates like the sedan owners have to...:)

cakM3

I say do it Wes! :) For your coupe the baseplates do not need to be modified. They are direct bolt ons....a good thing. The only thing you have to do is mod the internals where the mirror motor sits. This is very easy if you follow Jon's DIY he posted on his ESS TS2 build thread. This is what I did and found this to be the best solution to mount our ribbon motors on. Works great :thumbsup

Today I started applying the clay bar to my hood and front fenders to get that smooth velvety feeling back on my paint surface. I realized that I will need to set aside some time before the meet to thoroughly detail and do some paint correction to get the clear gloss finish I really want on my ZHP. 3 1/2 weeks at the paint shop, it got very dusty and now the paint feels like sand paper....:facepalm

I got the hood and front fenders back to my liking and even applied polish but ran out of time as I was wiping off the polish before it started raining outside. I suppose I will finish it later on this week at the auto hobby shop here on base.....do it right. By then, I should have additional buffing pads and polish so I can get this done right...at least I'm getting another spring project/routine started...:)

I have to give credit to BP on this. Ian,

Eventually I will reroute my Sirius antenna from the shark fin. When I test fitted my shark fin the adhesive stuck to the roof pretty good and right now I just don't have the time, or energy, to put into taking off the shark fin so I routed the antenna (temporarily for this trip) to the rear deck just like how I have it in my ///M.

Edit: Found out that the power dome hood is not available for the sedan, so I guess this is something I won't be doing. I don't think I like the GTR hoods that are still available for these cars.....I don't think I will have enough mods to carry this so the plain hood will be what I will have...:/

Love the ///M styling cues ( go figure since I own one :) ) and with the ZHP, seems appropriate to have some of this but then everyone has a different vision for their unique rides :biggrin

Since I will never get rid of my "not so special" ZHP, it only makes sense to me to further refine the looks with other mods to tie everything together for that :drool look ;)

Dane has already recommended BBS wheels for my ride and eventually, I will have my set of BBS wheels.....someday....;)

Edit: Jan 2015 - I finally got my BBS CH wheels for my ZHP and it looks absolutely fantastic!!

As the camera can generally take care of lighting until you get more refined, personally I recommend starting with composition and framing... basically what you're taking a picture of, and where (and HOW ie leading lines, rule of thirds, etc) you put it in the frame. I definitely suggest taking some sort of class either online or at a local photography shop. I think lynda.com is a popular online site. Once you get that down, move on to lighting techniques such as spot metering, etc, and then more advanced topics.

You're welcome. That said, often, lighting is the real difference in a good vs. a great photograph, so don't underestimate that. It's as Mark and Casey always say, you have to get the basics down first. Composition and framing are good basics again, because your camera can handle many general lighting situations. Also, if Dane included the Nikon DVD that came with the camera, definitely watch it (I'm guessing you might have already done that).

Since it's such a nice morning, I got BP up here to assist me in figuring out if we can reprogram my 'updated' LCM to work in my ZHP. My immediate plan is to have the LCM recoded so I can have one touch triple blink feature. The auto lights is another feature I will eventually retrofit to my ZHP but that's a later project.

You need a mid 05+ LCM in order to get this to work. Once you get a 2005 LCM working you get just set this and wala.

ALSZ CYCL_TI_BLK dreimal enables triple-flash blinkers

There are many NGs all over the place :)

You don't need the mileage to code the LCM, just the last seven of the VIN and you'll be fine.

And Derek, it's not necessarily an 05+, but an SW value of 4.0 or greater. That's the key for triple blink.

Justin,

I thought it had to be s/w vers 4.0 or later to have one touch triple blink but I remember Ian doing his with BP's help and he got one touch triple blink working on his LCM (s/w vers 3.6).

Edit: s/w 4.0 or 4.5 is required for one touch triple blink feature to work.

My understanding is that I have to reset mileage (0000.00) and have the right VIN programmed in. Then the car does the rest. Problem is I can't do either using my BMW scanner w/ PA Soft. Problem is that right now I don't have the time to figure this issue out so I let BP take my scanner and interface cable/LCM so he could get this sorted out while I focus on my college......

Thanks Devlin! :) For the longest time I didn't think recoding a used LCM would be possible until last week when I let BP go home with my BMW scanner, PA Software, and LCM. During the week he figured out how to recode the LCM and the rest is history. Actually, when recoding, it appeared to me that it was easier to recode the used LCM compared to coding the new LCM I put in my ///M. When I had the new LCM coded, it immediately threw out bulb out errors for my OE LED tail lights. BP had to use SSS to get everything sorted out in the ///M. I always find it interesting how someone can learn so much where coding is concerned.....perhaps when I'm finished with college, I can devote my spare time to doing much more research in this area :thumbsup

I will add that planning to make next years SIGFest is a must if you missed out this year. It was awesome meeting everyone in person. It makes for a much more personal experience that I wouldn't miss out on. I will be there at next year's SIGFest but with my TiAg coupe this time...:roundel

Dane,

The BMW Performance SSK is the same as the 330d shifter (both shifters are the same part number)... I have the 330d shifter installed in the ///M and between my ZHP and ///M there is a difference. BP and Steve (Prowlerflyer) have driven my ///M and can add to this. It seems, the BMW SSK (aka, 330d shifter) has a shorter throw compared to the ZHP shifter. At least that's how it feels every time I drive the ///M....I'm looking for a similar feel for the ZHP :)

IRRC, the part numbers for the 330d and the BMW Perf shifter are only the same in regards to the e46 M3. To our ZHP's, they carry different part numbers.
