Things I will need to make this mod happen are:
-A set of BMW performance rear calipers (or 135i rear calipers) - will source from ECS Tuning
-A set of e46 M3 rear Performance cross-drilled rotors - will source BMW Performance rotors from ECS Tuning
-A set of brake lines that are slightly longer than the standard rear ones
Charlie, sounds awesome, I'm definitely interested to hear what you think after having these installed. I always thought it would be a little awkward to have a BBK just on the front, all the kits out there seem like they are missing something by not doing anything with the rears. Let us know where you end up sourcing the longer brake lines from, if you don't mind.

I totally agree! This is why I will be doing this "upgrade" when time and funds allow. When I do this I plan to provide a more detailed DIY with pictures so others can do this if they want... I really want to complete what I started and for my type of driving, these Performance BBKs will do the job perfectly :thumbsup
I will send you a PM when I'm about to start this....hopefully I will be able to source the calipers within the next few months....then I will have to source brand new performance ///M cross drilled rotors so it will be some time... realistically, I will probably be doing this particular project in Spring 2016. Right now I really want to take my CSL bootlid (for sedan) to the body shop for paint and install before it gets colder outside....

The TS2 is something I really really really want to do to my ZHP but I have a few open projects at the moment (still as well as a few new ones that recently popped up) that need to be done and a daughter to get thru college before I can realize that dream....
with that said..... boosting my ZHP is in the future plans ;) This is what I have at the moment that needs to be done....
ZHP:
- CSL bootlid to paint and then mount
- Rain sensor/Auto headlight retrofit
- 135i Performance rear caliper retrofit
M3:
- Carbon Fiber CSL roof install
- Complete my Intravee II/Stereo Project (incorporate a DSP)
- source my new billeted oil filter cap
Then there are the required maintenance due on both cars...
ZHP:
- Transmission flush
- Diff flush
- Pulley refresh
- new rear Blizzaks to replace my worn ones....
M3:
- Cooling System refresh (complete system)
- Transmission flush
- Diff flush
- fan clutch/fan refresh (have new fan clutch on hand)
- a new set of tires for my BBS CH wheels (getting Toyo Proxes T1 Sport)
- get new subwoofer amp (old one died)
So you can see I still have a lot to get off my plate....ahhhh the life of an enthusiast ;)

So when I return from my next business trip I will be making arrangements with my local BMW body shop to paint my CSL bootlid for sedan Imola so I can get this mounted to my ZHP after sitting in my spare bedroom for the past year...this will be one item I can actually cross off my checklist ;) :thumbsup

It comes down to getting a set of tires for my M3's BBS wheels or getting the CSL bootlid painted and have some cash.... I decided to paint my CSL bootlid. I can always get the tires during the winter months and just use the Arc8's this season for the ///M. Besides, I'm dying to see just how good the CSL bootlid will look on my ZHP :)

As it usually happens....when I get ready to do a project the other car intervenes :) Painting of my CSL bootlid has to wait so I can address a very recent new maintenance issue with my ///M. Usually works out that way. Earlier this year my ZHP altered my plans to mod my M3 when I had to replace power steering hoses....as they say....s*** happens ;)
So today I took apart my passenger's side headlight and fixed an issue I caused with them 6 months ago... all I have to do is wait till it gets dark to confirm my fix and aim my headlights.

http://images.tapatalk-cdn.com/15/09/18/6e6c59f028c0e0ee2dd63bf88c3e35e1.jpg
I bent over that small metal piece on the shutter which allowed additional light to come out thru the projector....
http://images.tapatalk-cdn.com/15/09/18/b4923be0c7fa8b7dbb5c0cebf276a964.jpg
You can see the cutout here looking at the inside part of the shutter. Why would they make a cutout here??? Can anyone explain that??
Anyway I bent that small metal part so it would cover that cutout again and hopefully this will be the end of that minor headache...

Well, at least I got to really clean my headlight assembly today...after I was finished with my headlight, I swapped steering wheels and installed my perforated leather steering wheel I acquired from Bruce.
http://images.tapatalk-cdn.com/15/09/18/7dbeec5ae6dffcfde28eaf3b8c2413c0.jpg
Took out my alcantara steering wheel so I can get it properly cleaned....

City lights does add a very nice touch to the E46 if you want to stay strictly OEM... :thumbsup I have considered changing out my angel eyes on my ZHP to city lights but I really love my Orion V4s too much to do that.... perhaps if my Orion V4s ever fail I might entertain changing things out....

You're right Rob... it will be very cold up here soon so I'm not looking to actually start and finish this project until sometime in mid April but it will be completed before I put my BBS CH wheels back on :thumbsup
on another note... I seriously need to finish painting my CSL bootlid Imola and get that piece installed so this is what I have in order for now...
1. Finish my Performance BBK setup (rear 135i calipers, ///M rear rotors, and new brake lines)
2. Refresh all my pulleys
3. CSL bootlid

At first I didn't think I was going to do this but decided I may take my ZHP down the DINAN path and get more items towards the DINAN badge for my red mistress :)
I already have the DINAN throttle body installed so I figured this would be my next logical path...
https://farm2.staticflickr.com/1640/24281775971_bc3a9a8e9a_o.jpg
The DINAN strut bar will go into my ZHP and I will remove the BMW Performance carbon fiber strut bar...
https://farm2.staticflickr.com/1617/23737444793_1f46e07ca7_o.jpg
Having the rear strut bar should firm things up back there...
https://farm2.staticflickr.com/1680/23996463829_25f1b6548f_o.jpg
Since Dusty's strut bars became available I decided to go for them. I'm very happy Dusty gave me the opportunity to buy these! :)
Edit: Jon put out info regarding the DINAN badge and it turns out I won't get it since I'm getting these parts second-hand... oh well. I will still have them:)

Wow, Charlie going Dinan... Why the change? I have to admit, I loved having a Dinan car, made a special car a little more special... The build quality on their parts is always OEM level if not better.
Enjoy the road. And keep in mind, you can't get the Dinan badge (at least not certified through Dinan) unless you're buying the parts NEW. You need Dinan authorized retailer receipts submitted to Dinan to get your VIN certified and the badge...
Looking forward to more!

I have you to blame for this Jon :) Seriously, I already installed the DINAN throttle body and when Botond's BMWP strut bar broke, it has been making me reconsider using this strut bar on my daily driver. I have been looking at the DINAN strut bars but wanted both the front and rear strut bars... Dusty's DINAN strut bars became available so I took a chance and sealed the deal with him. No regrets here :thumbsup

That sucks! I was hoping I could! Oh well! I will at least have these parts in my ZHP :thumbsup
So.... What's the plan for the BMWP bar...?
I'm keeping my BMWP strut bar for my next E46 ///M SMG vert in a few years.... ;) For the time being I will clean up the bar, polish it and then mount it on one of my walls in my apartment :thumbsup
This is the car I will be adding to my current collection in a few years... :)

Using the BMWP strut bar on both ///Ms won't be an issue since I won't be driving them nearly as much as I drive my ZHP... and they look so damned sexy! Perfect in the ///M's engine bay :)

One lingering thought I have been having ever since Botond suffered catastrophic failure of his Performance Carbon Fiber Strut Bar has been eliminated from my brain....my daily driver will now have a much sturdier, and still attractive, strut bar ;) :thumbsup
I will start Phase 2 of my DINAN strut bar over another weekend when we have decent weather like today. I did get additional hardware for my rear towers :) looking forward to completing my DINAN strut bar install on my daily driver.

Looks good Charlie!
I can see a slight outline of the strut mount/camber plates on the top of the strut tower on both sides. Also it appears that there may be a hairline crack to the left of the inner bolt hole on the left side. Hard to tell from the pic. I would put reinforcement plates in sooner than later, especially since you have camber plates.
Also, no need for Locktight on those. The bolts you got are pinch bolts. They are self locking

Been thinking of this for a while. If a strut bar provides rigidity and transfers weight/load from one strut tower to the other, I think the Engineers must be design the strut bars to fail at some point before the strut tower fails. I think that's why the BMWP strut bar fails in some cases. It fails to protect the strut tower.
In my case, the UUC Strut Barbarian (not properly designed) never failed, but my strut tower did (by cracking).
Food for thought.

Good point Dane! Since Botond has had his fail I decided for my daily driver I would change things out although Badclown did point out that it was out of character for me to pursue strut bars other than BMWP strut bars... he's right but I feel it was time for a change ;)

good points, dane.
i think the BMW reinforcement plates are a good idea as they distribute the load over a wide area. conversely, most strut tower bases concentrate the load right around the three mounting points. also, a bar that has a very flat/low attachment point would be best - the higher the attachment point, the higher the risk of cracking the strut tower at the inboarding mounting point bolt (like charlie's pic above that rob pointed out).
i think, though, that suspension choices have something to do with this as well. if your car is lowered, and especially if it's really low - i.e., very little suspension travel - your front suspension is going to be bottoming out much more often, and this kind of shock (ha) is going to be especially damaging to the strut towers... moreso if you don't have the reinforcement plates.
this might be good for a new thread.
and, charlie - looks good, as always, man! :cheers

Believe it or not I used Lemon Joy dishwashing detergent and did this lightly using a greenie. Got all the dirt off the bar and even managed to get the brushed look on the aluminum :)

The DINAN strut bar is probably the only strut bar I would consider getting to replace the BMWP strut bar I had on my ZHP. Honestly, I love the look of my BMWP strut bar much better in my engine compartment but with how bad the roads are where I live/drive, I felt having the DINAN strut bar would be better on my daily driver although Dane now has added a very good point which is why I will need to get strut reinforcement plates soon....

To be completely honest, they all yellow... the engine covers I have for my M3 yellowed just enough that they perfectly match my kevlar Gruppe M CAI....
The carbon fiber engine covers I have for my ZHP have a greenish/yellow tint to them and match my DINAN carbon fiber bits.... so if you decide to get carbon fiber engine covers just know in time they will yellow a bit and you won't have that initial carbon fiber color. With that said, I still love having my carbon fiber engine covers :)

That bar was sanded smooth then polished unless they came in two different styles (brushed aluminum or polished aluminum)...
I started polishing my DINAN strut bar this evening...

Just went to the body shop tonight to get an estimate to paint out my CSL bootlid in Imola which I plan to install on my ZHP this Spring. Body shop is busy and I will be doing some testing in the Bahamas in March so the bootlid will go in for paint first week of April. Seeing how I have plenty of time... I plan to order a new set of rear tires for my BBS CH wheels so when the time comes to change out wheel sets for the upcoming Spring/Summer season, my BBS CH wheels will be ready for my ZHP ;)
That's pretty!
Thanks, I think so as well. Thanks Gary for showing me this :)

Gary, I went to the body shop and right now they're slammed with lots of work but took my inputs and I agreed that I can drop off both my ZHP and bootlid during the first week of April to have the bootlid painted. They have penciled me in so I should be all set for the painting of my CSL bootlid. At least it will be professionally done and will be a big step in my building a "working relationship" with this body shop in preparation for my CSL carbon fiber roof install on the ///M at a later date... ;)

Peter,
I'm going to pack it up and put it away in the garage. It is my OE trunk and I would like to keep the OE bootlid stored in case I ever need to use it again...

I'm installing the rear strut mounts for my DINAN bar. Driver's side mount installed w/o any issues...
http://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20160227/ef8ba51f478f23f5d8cd7ce35b829c9d.jpg
and I got everything set up perfectly :)
The passenger's side however is a royal PITA to torque the nuts down due to the fact I can't fit a socket onto the nut. No clearance and it's so tight I can barely fit an open ended wrench into thst spot.

http://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20160227/282af0633b5e7c23efa7b3b9bd3c6fff.jpg
The rear nut I can tighten but it's the front one I need to tighten as well. I'mbreaking a sweat but then I've got a few things working against me....
1. I'm getting older
2. Getting less flexible
3. Fat (yes, I said it!)
4. Eye sight not what it used to be....
but I have the determination and drive to see this project thru ;) :thumbsup
Edit: I completed my DINAN strut bar (front/rear) install today by getting my rear strut bar installed. A lot more challenging to install compared to the front only because of how you have to fit inside the trunk to get in the right position to wrench the tools. Much easier when you're skinny [emoji12]
Anyway it's done and I see I nicked my gorilla glass on my iPhone again....

Working up inside the trunk area just plain sucks. Been there done that. Doesn't get any easy as you get older that's for sure.

You know... that gives me an idea... My daughter is smaller than us. Give her tools and some chocolate chip cookies and she could wrench on it.

Shawn, these tires were mounted when I purchased my BBS CH wheels from Emily. Before her Stuart was running with these tires. If they are good enough for Stuart to run on them then they are good enough for me... reviews not required :thumbsup

The time is getting near when I will be taking my CSL bootlid for sedan into the paint shop to have it painted Imola. Per the paint shop's request I will also leave my ZHP so they can match the bootlid when they paint. I will get this completed before starting the rear 135i caliper project. I have waited two years and have allowed other projects to consume my time so I will get this done while it's foremost in my mind... :)
Should look sweet when I have my BBS CH wheels mounted ;)
