Performance headers with catalytic converters built in for $840 shipped to the U.S. Looks like a solution for those of use that still want a chance at passing an emissions test. Anyone ever use any of Schmeidmann's stuff? Or know of anyone that used these specific headers?

That's a good deal! Considering the SuperSprint Full Exhuast is about 3 times that price.

I've looked at their site before but never bought anything. I might be interested in this but would like to know if you can pass smog before I drop $$$ on it.

Justin, you are comparing a street set of headers to a full race set. not exactly an apples to oranges judgement. A better comparison would be some eBay headers

JP, the SuperSprint full exhaust has a Sport Cat option right after the headers, the same as this set up.

OP, this has bungs for oxygen sensors, so you won't throw codes when installed properly. And I'm sure this will pass Smog if they do the sniffer in your county. You will have no issues with CEL with the OBDII check.

i swore it said these are for "off road use" only

By off road I meant not street legal... apparently I was correct

"Legal only for racing vehicles which may never be used upon a highway. Not applicable or intended for street or highway use."

According to the EPA it is illegal to move the placement of the cats. I doubt the EPA is going around checking cars, but worth knowing. After reading the EPA blurb, I'm considering going with the magnaflow exhaust manifold because their website says it street legal.

A set will run around $1500

If you have the cash to spend on them. They're like $700 a pop!

Jon (Au2bahn) recently purchased them and put them on his ESS ZHP. You should PM him.

And JP, that statement just frees the vendor of any legally binding issues if you were to fail emissions or be detained for illegal exhaust.

Got it. Its just whenever I see that I skip the item since I doubt I can get it past smog out here. If the case is different then I guess I'll put it back on the list because SS would be what I actually want

But those are not street legal in CA IIRC.

They are legal in Texas. I eventually plan on living in Austin, so I need to be able to pass a sniff test. My main concern was breaking federal law with a car I want to drive on the street.

There's always a way to pass emissions ;)

Would this work with the uuc tse3 exhaust?

Probably not the full exhaust. Maybe the lite section...

Like I would use everything but the cat part on the tse3.

The lite section is just the axle back portion of the exhaust. That would keep total cost down and would replace your ZHP exhaust which people on e46 fanatics would happily snap up ;)

you could the cheaper route.. Supersprint replica headers with Magnaflow race cats.

Cool find, I wonder if this would pass visual in CA.

These things are pretty sweet wouldn't mind a couple extra horses and probably loosing a little weight at the same time.

Interesting that it goes to a single tube similar to new bimmerworld exhaust for the M3. What muffler would you use with this to have a quite car ?

My opinion on the California smog inspection is that many smog stations don't care that much where your cats are during the visual inspection, as long as they can see the cats and the car passes the tailpipe sniffer. Because if you pass the sniffer, you must have functional cats somewhere, right? Of course I wouldn't install Schmiedmann or Magnaflow headers with cats then go tell the smog guy about them, because then he might be required to ask for the CARB number and fail you when you can't supply one.

I think the smog computer tells the operator what equipment should be there for each make/model/year of car, but not where it is. So if your car is supposed to have an EGR valve and secondary air pump, the printout says those should be there, but doesn't supply a diagram showing where they are. Of course, I could be wrong about this. :scratchinghead

My other concern would be that maybe a 49-state legal header/cat combo might somehow have cats that are not quite efficient enough for the California tailpipe sniffer standards. Did Magnaflow make these 49-state legal because they couldn't pass California emissions standards, or simply because it was too much hassle to get them CARB approved?

Any updates on the headers?

I recently installed this set up on my 330xi, and was very impressed by the quality. For fitment reasons with the xi I adapted an s52 cat rather than the schmeidmann supplied cats. End result was impressive.https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20171222/60dfd64fe087176efaf97b58391e09c4.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20171222/8fbe8e5855de194c666fc4fb6cc6aadc.jpg

Very cool... is that where the S52’s cats normally sit in the exhaust? Wondering if they would get hot enough to do anything?

I was eyeing those headers as well... thanks for the thoughts on them.

How is the sound?

That’s where they would mount in the e36 and they’re working great!

Sound is amazing... similar to the quite expensive eisenmann race. After the cats I welded on a y that went in to a 3” merge with a v-flange ending in a magnaflow chamber muffler.
