View Full Version : Arming the OEM alarm

I purchased, installed, and activated the e46 alarm and I'm very pleased. I have a question, though. I've noticed that if I press the lock button on my key fob twice, the clown nose stays on for about a second before it goes into flashing intermittently.

Is there a reason for this? Also, am I supposed to 'arm' the alarm every single time? Or does it just arm itself when the car locks?

Finally, if my car were to get towed, wouldn't the alarm go off because of the tilt sensor?

Yes if your car was to get towed, the tilt sensor would go off if alarm was armed. If you press lock button twice in a row, it actually locks the car and does the arm the alarm at all. One press = armed, two = disarmed for that time.

Oh crap, I thought I was arming it by pressing it twice.. better go back outside and arm the alarm! :P

I read in the owner's manual (page 42) that:
Press once = armed
Press twice = armed, but tilt and interior motion sensors deactivated.

So, just for clarification, not every ZHP came with an alarm system?

That is correct, no E46 did. It was an option, even on the M3. I was always amazed that a MkIII Jetta came standard with an alarm, but an E46 BMW had it an an option

so How can i test if I actually have the alarm set/activated, or is the clown nose just blinking to "pretend" the alarm is set?
AFAIK there's a a 'fake' setting that just makes the clown nose blink to give the impression that it's 'actually' armed...

Are you trying to see if you have an alarm installed? If this is the case, hold the trunk button down on the key fob for 5 seconds, if you do have an alarm, the panic or alarm will go off

If you have it and just want to see if its armed, the clown nose will work with the alarm. So if the alarm is armed, the clown nose will flash, if not, it won't.

Thanks.
I will try that. oh and how do i stop the alarm after i set it off that way? :)

FYI: right now, when I lock the car with a single press, the car locks, and the clown nose begins flashing. (is that enough proof that i actually have the alarm installed for real?)

Roll down your windows, wait a bit, stick hand in to test motion alarm. Reset. Roll down windows, wait a bit, start jacking up car to test tilt. :)

Just press unlock on key fob to stop alarm after testing any of these instances.

Yeah, you most likely don't have an alarm. 9 times out of 10, when an alarm is installed it is programmed to "beep" when locking and unlocking. Try the Panic button or the motion sensors as well, like Nelson mentioned, (roll down window, lock the car, and wave your hand inside the car. If you have the alarm, it will go off in seconds)

Clown nose flashing is NOT an indicator of having an alarmed installed (strangely enough).

I tried to set off my panic alarm last night by pressing and holding the trunk release button with the doors having been locked via the same remote. All that happened was that the clown nose started blinking rapidly. That was it.

Maybe I did it wrong?

I "discovered" another way to test it.....pull the hood latch lever but don't open the hood, lock the car with the remote and then try opening the hood all the way. That'll get your attention in a closed garage! LOL

Or....open hood all the way. Push in hood button with thumb. Lock car...then release hood button.

Just like gr330zhp said, press your trunk button a second time and hold it, you panic alarm should active if you have an alarm, the clown nose and the pre-wire badge inside your truck lid only proves that you are pre-wired.

You car should beep if you have the OEM alarm installed.

I've installed it bymyself. I took the alarm system from a wrecked e46. Interior sensor and tilt sensor works perfectly. I've had a little problem with alarm mount place. Stupid factory person put the screw in the wrong place so i couldnt install it to its original place.

I can send you my BMW Scanner 1.4 and you can activate it and add some more cool features by yourself? :) Its not that hard.

You know some BMW's hidden features like auto lock after 5 min without door open. One touch window close. ETC.

I know of those programs..but I didn't know it could be done with something so portable? :)

That's a very kind offer. If you do, maybe we should have a SoCal scanner day and share the equipment to add features.

That's Cool, where did you get the handy device? Does it do anything else?

Does it really matter how I sent this?

You do need a laptop to install it on and it has limited functions compared to INPA, NCSExpert etc. but for the price and ease of installation it is worth the 50 bucks or so. It can also read error codes for the various modules.

It probably can do more than I realize but I haven't read up on it that much yet. I've just snooped around a bit on it so far. I did change things so that only my front windows will roll down with the remote now instead of all the windows. Also set it so my doors will re-lock themselves 2 minutes after unlocking if you don't open any doors.

You can also turn off the warning lights for various bulb out warnings if for instance you installed LED bulbs somewhere and get a bulb out warning as a result. DRL's on or off is another handy function.

Can you do all lights on, with high beams? or is that a LCM euro program that is much more complicated?

Negative. In fact, I asked that question in that thread and that's what I was told. I was hoping the same thing. Need NCS Expert I believe to do that.

More like I need my own Mafia programming expert at my side with his computer and cables for that. :P
