as the title states, I'm curious if anyone here has wrapped the wheel in leather instead. The reason why I ask this is I'm a bit of a sweaty palm guy and the alcantara just seems to suck it all right up and it just gets gross again...

I have a wheelskinz on mine. Not over alcantara, but over the leather. It would be the same thing basically. Check em out or hit Coby up.

One of my long term projects. I need to purchase the leather from Wheel Skins. And I will do the inter loop lacing. I have already done two M Technic II wheels for my E30 M3. Came out I have thick wheels.

Could you explain what you mean please regarding the "not over alcantara, but over leather"?
Also, Coby only does alcantara right?

I think what Dane meant is that he has his wrapped over leather not alcantara as it is for your case as a point of reference. And of my knowledge coby only does alcantara, wouldn't hurt to send him an email though.

Aha! Found this on the zhp mafia facebook page:
Is this just the replacement wheel from bmw? (http://a5.sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-ash2/66874_156752164355665_155236827840532_337078_84420 0_n.jpg)

I believe in mint condition, that's what it looked like.

I mean is that the only way to get the aerated leather like that? Just buy the OEM replacement?

That's my old car. Steering wheel was in perfect condition. Perforated leather. Thing of beauty.

If there's wheels like that on the market, then that would be the way to go.....

you can find leather wheels on ebay for decent prices. most of them are re-wraps. or you can buy new for 2-3x the price
i'm STILL on the fence whether i want a coby alcantara wrap or a new perforated leather wheel. can't make up my mind.

My money would be on the Coby alcantara. A Coby wrap, IMO, looks much better than perforated leather... A beautifully done wrap from them would be on my wish list if I didn't already have the standard leather sedan wheel...

i agree that the custom stitched coby wheels look a little nicer, but i want to drive this car for another 5 years at least and i'm worried about the long-term longevity of alcantara

There is preventative maintenance you can do on the alcantara to prevent it from looking like crap so quickly. Here is the thread on how to do so. (http://www.zhpmafia.com/forums/showthread.php?402-DIY-Restore-Your-Alcantara-Steering-Wheel)

i'm in it for the long haul as well, if I can't find a perf leather for cheap i'm definitely gonna hit coby up. I also need to replace the bottom half of my steering wheel because it's all chewed up from the prev owner.

They get big bucks for the Perf. leather ones these days. All of their wheels have gone up quite a bit in price in the last year or so. Tischer lists it in their "specials" for $1185! If you search the part number on their website though it shows the price at $719 ??? Not sure I understand what's going on there.

The one listed here for $505 used to be $370 not all that long ago.....

My Cobywheel, after one summers use, still looks like new.

lol......no, I don't think I would say I am. I can definitely see your point though. Does it cause any problems on leather wheels?

nah, leather is infinitely easier to clean than alcantara

That's true. I guess I was thinking more along the lines of damaging the leather from the constant moisture. :dunno
