View Full Version : This Sucks...
Look at this crap...lol. Aparently when a headlight goes out, the Fog lights come on as a default. I can't get them to turn off when its dark out. Well, my car is a little lop-sided now. I called BMW and they want $185 per headlight bulb. Is there any aftermarket options out there that do not suck and put out the same color as the stock bulbs? I was told by the guys at BMW to go on ebay and get some, either phillips or ozram brand. Just wondering what your experiences with this are. I'm broke, so I'm going to rock my janky ride like this til payday Monday.

This. Philips/Osram D2S 4300K temperature from anywhere you can find it online - ebay, amazon, etc...of course giving preference to our sponsors.
There's a fair chance its not the bulb as well.
I think a little diagnosis is in order for this weekend. I will switch the ignitors and see if that helps me.

Learn something everyday! So if a head light goes out the opposite fog turns on! Brilliant!

First time I've seen that. I've seen alot of e46s with headlight bulbs out.
I think both fogs are supposed to come on, but my car is sooo damn janky that I blew a fog light bulb simultaneously.

If you're changing the xenon bulb, make sure youre doing both at the same time or they'll be different colors even if it's the same temp ex 4300k. Dont know much about fogs though. Not bad of a job to switch out d2s bulbs.

Kristen,
There are coding options that allow for a foglight to be used as a headlight in case of headlight failure. That might be what's happening here. You can't turn this fog off, correct?
If that's the case, you won't be able to turn it off 'till you replace the bulb. That is set in coding and requires NCS Expert to change.
Instead of swapping ignitors, try swapping bulbs instead.

Also, for xenon bulbs, some have purchased cheap ones off eBay and say it's the same quality / you can easily replace and still save $$

I got D2S's from Khoalty. Perfect replacement.
Interesting that when mine went out, the Fog on that side came on. I don't know if it went back to normal though after I replaced it.

You crack me up Kpro. I hate this happened, but looks like you've gotten some sound advise here.
So my pointless input, Looks like your car has lopsided "headlights". Maybe you should get a car bra? :facepalm
