Nice pics. Like the first, crop out the people in the back right. Not exactly sure what you were going for on the 2nd, as his face is blocked. Work call, GTG.
Sorry about that. Back now. Like the idea of the 2nd one, would just like something more defined... is it about the glove/hat, the person, action? Like the wheel pic too.

I love the shadows/highlights on the wheel pic Dane.
for the one of the fairing notice how #2 seems more interesting than #1... the line leading into the corner on #2 makes it more visually appealing. My only gripe is I wish the entire faring was in focus instead of shallow DOF so I could read them all. bump up that aperture next time to an f/8 or f/11 (or higher). You'll still get some blur in the background.
My thoughts for you are get comfortable shooting (obviously) and learning the basics of composition and lighting. Then get some tim using some basic editing software like Lightroom so you can adjust the photos a little here and there - doesn't need to be drastic.

5 min of basic editing (plus touched up bbs cap)... (not that I'm a photoshop God, I'm actually pretty mediocre TBH).

Excellent tips guys. Thanks for taking the time to help me out. All comments appreciated. Thanks for the compliments as well.
I need to work on....
1. Composition. A little more thought and foresight into my shots. I really haven't had a chance to be dedicated to this yet.
2. Learn the camera. Everything is in auto. Still learning.
3. All photos are untouched. Downloaded the free trial of lightroom last night. It looks to be very much like the program I have now....which is Corel PhotoShop Pro X3.

Dane, you are off to a great start.
1. Corel Pro is good, but Lightroom is great. Much more intuitive and better suited to photography IMO.
2. Learn the camera. It is the tool that lets you create.
You addressed it yourself earlier. Have a purpose when shooting a photograph.. We all walk around and click snapshots, but if you really want to create an image you should have a purpose or a goal in mind. I love the wheel shot also.

Ok...great. Thanks Casey. I will purchase Lightroom off several recommendations now, as I can see this will be something I'm going to do for a while.

When I downloaded the free trial yesterday, it asks if you wanna try both. I assumed CS5 was a total package as well.

$99 is the upgrade price. Full version (non-upgrade) is $299.
Dane,
I just started this stuff too. I have a good friend that shoots cars as a hobby and for sidejobs, and have been getting tips from him.
The first thing he told me is to never use Auto. Always shoot manual, he says. I understand why now; the more I shoot in manual, the more trial and error I have to go through as far as settings go, meaning I'll learn the functions of the camera at a rapid rate, and will understand how tweaking certain things will affect the output of the shot. For your own good, IMO, you should shoot exclusively in manual.
Kind of like learning how to drive a manual car first. It's harder, but then when you get into an auto for the first time, it'll be cake.

That is great news, that means you have 56 or 57 shots that you can use to learn from.
Shooting manual can be humbling at first, but with practice it gets easier.

Same, but I use priority shutter to shoot the dogs and motorsport..kinda impossible without it

So anyways.... I have grown quite fond of these monkeys. They have been members of our family for about 5 years. They get hidden, by me, throughout the house (on doorways, picture frames, etc), and then the kids find them (sometimes several weeks later). They have actually been a pretty fun addition.
Arrrrrrrggggggghhhhhhhhh!!!!!!

I can only comment on the 3rd because I only see something in there. You missed main focus. Right now it's in-between the monkeys, infront of both of their faces.

old photographer co-worker of mine used to say for newbs its the rule of 40s... 1 shot out of 40 will be quality. Just means youre still experimenting. Soon it'll go down to 1/30, 1/20 and then you'll see a big jump to like 1/5 or less.

Are you turning off the VR on the lens when you're mounted on the tri-pod? The coke picture looks alittle blurry.
When I used a tri-pod. I had a 2 second delay on the shutter button...That way I'd focus, shoot...then take my hand off the camera and it will take the picture. That might be where you're getting the blurry from...yes?

Won't remotes and or cables eliminate "camera shake"?
Isn't blur a different issue.. Like focus?
A tight zoom of straight lines in the image should determine which is happening here ( can't from my phone).

you don't need a trigger.
Just use a 2 second delay shutter.
As for the explanation, camera shake can cause blur, which can be mistaken for out of focus.
Dane, stay away from the flash. Set a low ISO and a longer exposure. It will take out some of the saturation and grain and it will give you sharper image.
Sharp > all.

VR will cause blur on tri-pods. It seems counter intuitive, but it's taken from Casey...
To add on what Gheybe said, long exposure and no flash will eliminate the bright license plate and the high reflective nature in the headlights on this pic:

well maybe just changing your approach would help since you have limited time. I always say - anyone can take a picture but a real photographer creates them. Try just focusing on 1 shot per day. Get to the location knowing before hand (or at least having thought about) how you want to shoot it. Take the church for example. What side do you want to show? What kind of light do you want to be on it? What vantage point do you want to see it from? ect.....
At first, you'll need to tweak a lot of things and might shoot the same "shot" 40 times before you get it right, changing small things here and there like exposures or taking a few steps in one direction, then deciding to go back a few the other way. Then you'll get better as you progress and your eye will lead you to the better shot sooner.
Really work on CREATING 1 shot that you are happy with, not just settling for what you see is what you get. Street photography can be fun but it's never going to produce the kind of results you want at this stage. The point is that to spend 30 min on 1 photo to get it perfect will be more beneficial in your learning the craft than taking 10 shots that are good, maybe one that is very good, but nothing overwhelmingly great.
Also, sell me your car. :p

So will poping the flash from the appropriate distance and still using a long exposure. You'll get bright highlights and good even exposure. His mistake (not uncommon at all) was thinking he could use a flash as light compensation to illuminate the entire scene. Seldom does this ever produce quality results. Think of it this way Dane: Flash = fill light, never full light.

The rule of 3rds is a good general starting point however to make really high quality aesthetically pleasing photos (not that your stuff isn't DW), you need to get into more ratios than that... shape ratios, light/dark ratios, crop ratios, not to mention lines, complimenting or contrasting colors. A lot of work goes into setting up perfect shots. This is why I don't post much work, I'm only taking like 3-4 "photos" about 100 times each to get these elements right (or at least as best as I can).
Take the dog shot for example - The frame ratio comes into play here since it's cropped. Different crops will look better than others. The size of the dog in the frame will come into play. Compare the amount of frame taken up by him and the amount taken up by negative space (even though there is a background). Also the space of the grass/ground compared to the background of trees. These should hit certain ratios. 1:1, 1:2, 1:3, 1:5 and 1:8 are the most popular visually. Things start looking off when you get in the middle of those like 1:2.5 or something.
That being said, for a casual shooter who isn't going to go into this much work, I would say think in grids for your photos more than use the rule of 3rds. It's basically the same principle but just use a rule of 3rds horizontally plus a rule of thirds vertically (think Tick-Tac-Toe board). Use that to help you frame elements of your photos in the squares - you will naturally start using the frame a little more efficiently and unknowingly be applying the rule of 3rds when doing so.

Dane - I think you got a comment earlier about the flash and the reflective surfaces of the license plate. Someone gave me a similar comment on one of my shots and suggested that I make a soft box/flash diffuser for my camera's popup flash. Not sure which one would work best in this situation and it may or may not allow you to see all of your license plate considering how reflective it is.
If you search Youtube, there are a bunch of DIY videos on diffusers and softboxes... I know your a DIY kinda guy... so it might make for a good weekend project.

Happy with this one. Will keep tweaking. Need a decent PS program.
Looks better 4 sure. Look into an ebay download of Lightroom 3, should be under $100.

shoot on a tripod and take 2 photos.
1 properly expose for your house, ground and surrounding areas. 2nd do the long exposure for the sky. then send um to me and I'll merge the 2 (make sure you don't move the camera at all between shots).
they make awesome photos when they turn out like this:

Mainly exposure, iso, etc...
I think I'm pretty fair on composition.
It's just learning the camera, and spending time with it. Maybe doing some reading.
