View Full Version : Does the Performance Package over ride the Premium Package

Hope someone can clarify for me. I am shopping for a ZHP and many of them are listed as having both of these packages. However the online NADA Guide does not allow you to select both. Which tells me that maybe, if a person bought a car new with the ZHP package, then it did not also have the Premium.
Kind of makes sense, since the interior trim, steering wheel, etc. are different between the two.
Anybody know for sure? Thanks!

I believe that you could not have the ZHP and premium package during 2003 and 2004. During 2005 and 2006 you could.
Someone please correct that information if I am mistaken. Thanks.

Interesting, I am going to check out an 03 sedan on Monday, which is why I am doing all my homework now. I'm going to check and see if I can select both packages on NADA if I say its an 05.
BMW-FTW

Actually, NADA doee not even list the Premium Package as an option... what the O.o

Very weird. Check KBB and see if it's the same way.
BMW-FTW
10-01-2011, 12:42 PM
On KBB you can select or de-select all the packages:
Cold Weather
Premium
Sport
Performance
I'm still thinking it doesn't make sense to have both Premium and Performance or Sport and Performance for that matter. Does anyone have their window sticker handy? haha
wsmeyer

Here's the breakdown of options on my 2006:
ZCW Cold Weather Package 750.00
- 464 Ski bag N/C
- 494 Heated front seats N/C
- 502 Retractable headlight washers N/C
ZHP Performance Package 3,600.00
- 226 Sports suspension N/C
- 481 Sport seats N/C
- 710 M steering wheel N/C
- 716 Aerodynamic package N/C
- 760 Shadowline trim N/C
- 767 Performance package N/C
- 772 black cube trim N/C
- 787 18" alloy wheels N/C
388 Black soft top N/C
522 Xenon headlights 800.00
524 Adaptive light control N/C
639 BMW Assist 750.00
If there was a Premium package on top of all that what would it include? The only thing obvious that I don't have is Nav and a 6 disc changer.
William.

10-01-2011, 01:21 PM
Well, there you go... Thanks William! The only thing I can think of would be the Harmon Kardon sound, but I think that would be a stand alone option and not necessary to purchase the entire Premium Package to get.
Marcus-SanDiego
10-01-2011, 01:25 PM
One thing that we get in premium is leather seats. William, are yours cloth or leather?
wsmeyer
10-01-2011, 01:48 PM
@ BMW-FTW - The cloth grills on the speakers in the door say Harmon Kardon. Not sure if they were standard by 2006 or if there were better HK's as option.
@Marcus - Yes, leather seats, ebrake handle, shift boot, and perforated steering wheel.

Seems that leather seats in these cars was also a separate option and not part of the "Premium Package". I think that when peeps are selling these cars they just automatically say it has Premium because of the leather seats and HK sound.
So, I think I learned something new today! ZHPs do not have the Premium Package. They don't need it!
Marcus-SanDiego
10-01-2011, 02:15 PM
William, thanks for posting that. Interesting that leather seats did not get ordered through premium package.
Also interesting that your order shows alcantara steering wheel, which wasn't even available to us in 2006. BMW must not have changed up their template at that point.
wsmeyer
10-01-2011, 02:20 PM
Yeah, not everything is correct on the build your own workup. I read somewhere that they switched from Alcantara to perforated leather steering wheels in June 2005 and mine was built in Oct 2005.
I just recently changed my wheel, shift and e-brake boots to Alcantara just to change it up. I still have the stock parts though so I can change it all back pretty easily.

William, from our FAQ: "What's more, during the spring of 2005, BMW stopped putting Alcantara steering wheels on the ZHP (because of problems with premature wear), which means there are many ZHP-optioned cars on the road today without Alcantara steering wheels. Moreover, before BMW discontinued the Alcantara steering wheel, it also replaced many wheels under warranty, replacing them with leather wheels. Yet another reason why you'll find leather wheels coupled with Alcantara-clad seats."
I was able to find references to BMW discontinuing alcantara steering wheels in April/May, so I put spring in the write up. I couldn't get a clear answer (was it April? Was it May?).
Anyhow, thanks again for pitching in today.

I have an 05 coupe and the new car sticker shows both premium and performance package on mine. I know that in 03 the zhp package was only available on the sedan with a 6 speed manual tranny and w/out the premium package therefore all 03 zhp's are sedans, manual, and have alcantara. Starting in 04, the premium package and an auto tranny was an available option on the zhp (coupe and sedan).
EDIT: here is the link to the wiki found in Bimmerfest that talks about the ZHP package: http://www.bimmerfest.com/wiki/index.php/BMW_E46#Options_.26_Package_Codes

BMW made the change to leather wheel, shift boot, and parking brake midway through the 05 model year (I believe production date 11/04 and after but not anywhere near 100%). Yes, some cars that had the alcantara wheel had it swapped at the dealer due to premature wear but you can tell which those are by taking a look at the shift boot and parking brake. Also after the change (midway through 05 model year), the leather wheel and such was standard but customers had the option of choosing premium or not. Non-premium = alcantara seats I believe.

I'm pretty sure premium adds lumbar and auto-dimming mirrors. Before rain sensing wipers became standard it added those as well. I think ZHP and premium were available together, the only ones i know were mutually exclusive were sport and ZHP.

Funny, but as soon as I saw the question I was going to answer, as William and I had the exact same conversation. Then I started seeing all the posts and I knew William would step up... sorry I was late to this but it's good the knowledge is out there.
BTW, didn't the premium package include things like wood trim (which of course the cube trim would override), better seats (which the sport seats would override), etc, etc.?

Good to know, Gordo.
So, in 2003, customers could not get ZPP and ZHP together. I found posts on Bimmerfest where customers were talking about not being able to get ZPP and ZHP in 2004 either. However, in 2005 and 2006, we know that ZPP and ZHP could be ordered together.
Seems that the only conflict that potentially exists here is for MY2004. Does anyone know -- definitively -- if ZPP and ZHP could be ordered for MY2004?

And BMW shows this for option SA639: In which BMW models is Bluetooth® technology available?
As long ago as 2002, BMW was the first automobile manufacturer to introduce the Bluetooth® wireless standard for integrating mobile telephones and to offer it in all vehicle models. Requirements for using this standard are the BMW special accessories SA 644 mobile phone preparation with Bluetooth interface or SA 633 mobile phone preparation Business with Bluetooth interface (or option code SA 639 for North America).

I do have 639, not 633, which (in German) says "KOMPLETTVORB. HANDY USA/CDN"
According to the list I got the only "packages" my car has are (441) Smoker's Package, (716) M-Aerodynamic Package II, and (767) Performance Package
So here is the breakdown, the premium package adds:
*Leather upholstery
*BMW Assist system & services
*Auto-Dimming interior mirror
*Power lumbar support
have all of these.
From the bimmerfest list / WHAT MY OPTIONS SHEET SAYS:
Different wheels/tires [if ordered with the sport package, the sport package wheels/tires superseed] - NOT APPLICABLE, TYPE 135M (787 M LM RAEDER DOPPELSP. 135 M/MISCHB.)
A multifunction steering wheel [IF it was not already standard on the vehicle] - NOT APPLICABLE, HAVE M MULTIFUNCTION WHEEL (249 MULITFUNKTION FUER LENKRAD)
Wood grain interior trim [if ordered with the sport package, the premium package wood is typically installed, unless specifically requested otherwise] - NOT APPLICABLE, HAVE BLACK CUBE (772 INTERIEURLEISTE ALU BLACK CUBE)
Rain-sensing windshield wipers (became standard equipment in 2004) - NOT APPLICABLE, MY CAR IS A 2005
Auto-dimming rear-view mirror - FIRST PART OF THE PACKAGE I DO HAVE
Power seats - HAVE THIS
Lumbar Support (not available on the 325) - HAVE THIS
Moonroof (note: moonroof can also be ordered separately) - HAVE THIS
so from what I gather, my car has all the parts of the ZPP, but technically is not listed on my options sheet. option sheet follows, unfortunately in German so check vs http://www.zhpmafia.com/forums/showthread.php?169-BMW-Option-Codes:

Hmm, the Sedan has the natural brown leather, auto-dim mirror, lumbar support but has the zhp black cube trimming, so I am thinking when ordering you were able to get options of ZPP but what options were specific to ZHP were retained? like the black cube over the wood trim etc.?
terraphantm
06-04-2012, 04:26 PM
I think basically it worked like this:
In 2003 ZHP and ZPP were not orderable together. So 2003 ZHPs are missing options like lumbar support, auto dimming mirror, bluetooth/assist, the rain sensor, and auto headlights
In 2004 they allowed you to order ZPP. But the rain sensor and auto headlights became standard as of MY2004. So quite a few ZHPs were specified without the premium package since many of the options were included anyway (lumbar support and autodimming are kinda useless, and assist was order-able separately)
For 2005 and 2006, even more features became standard. So it just did not make sense for a lot of people to purchase the premium package.
As far as the overrrides - the cube trim overrode wood (though maybe you could've gotten wood if you really wanted). Alcantara overrode leather (if you wanted).

that sticker pretty much sums it up.
ZHP overrides ZPP trim choice.
ZPP puts leather seats, autodim, lumbar support. Shift boot and ebrake boot i believe is still alcantara if you have ZPP.
ZPP wasn't available with ZHP in 2003 but I thought in 2004 you were allowed to get it with auto and ZPP.
I wish i had lumbar support with Alcantara with heated seats. LOL

I'm pretty sure you were "allowed" to keep Alcantara if you wanted to even if you selected the premium package. It's been a while since the BMW configuration thing was online, so I'm not 100% on that.
You were able to get it with ZPP and auto in 04. Really, if they allowed you to get lumbar separately (or better yet, included it with the ZHP), then there wouldn't have been much reason to stick with ZPP asides for the autodimming mirror.
I think ZPP was more expensive in 2003 as well since the rain sensor, moon roof, and wood trim were not standard back then.
