View Full Version : Lighted shift knob?

Know its a newb? Tried searching, but the ZHP shift knob just looks like it should be lighted like my old e36m3 knob was. Is mine broken or are they not lighted in the shift pattern at the top?

Thanks
Chuck

The stock ZHP shift knob isn't lighted.

I believe there are several aftermarket options available if you would like a lighted one, however.

I think there's a guy somewhere that will add lighting to your ZHP knob so you get the ZHP knob with the 6 speed pattern. Can't remember which forum but its out there.

Barry, I have been thinking the same thing. I have one mounted on my ///M and it's nice but I got that one from LeatherZ before they jacked up the pricing for the 6-speed knob by $100.....

Check out the link: http://leatherz.com/Merchant5/merchant.mvc?Screen=PROD&Store_Code=01&Product_Code=IllumZHPShiftKnob&Category_Code=Knobs (http://leatherz.com/Merchant5/merchant.mvc?Screen=PROD&Store_Code=01&Product_Code=IllumZHPShiftKnob&Category_Code=Knobs)

Ya, that's a little more than I'd want to spend on one. Someone here on the site has one of those Ebay ones and the lighting looked pretty uniform on his, better than it looks in the Ebay pics even.

A little late to this, but just wanted to ask the experts before I ordered. :)

What am I missing?

OEM illuminated 6 speed shift knob on eBay for $120 shipped:

i donno, the leatherz is expensive but it looks like better quality. the illumination of the shift gate emblem looks much better. in the ebay one, the lighting looks pretty bad honestly. the "1" and "3" on the emblem are way brighter than the rest of it...

http://www.leatherz.com/Merchant2/art/m6speed99.jpg

vs.

http://oi39.tinypic.com/25rgv3t.jpg

as for why it is so expensive, this is the explanation on the leatherz site:

Why the M 6 Speed insert costs more

The Illuminated M 6 Speed Insert is difficult to get. The only way I can get this insert is to purchase a second shift knob from BMW with this particular insert. If you want to save the $115 charge, you can send me the insert from your stock shift knob and I can use it. I will even take $15 off the price of the Illuminated ZHP Shift Knob (making it $160). Please call me for more details. Shift Knobs purchased with this insert not eligible for return or exchange: The insert is too difficult for me to get and too expensive. Alternatively, if you would like to purchase a shift knob with no insert, so you can install the one from your car yourself, I can sell you one with no insert (If you decide to get a shift knob with no insert, I will take $15 off the price (making it $160) though there are no returns on a shift knob sold without an insert).

There are some pics of the Ebay one in this thread. Like I mentioned, I think it looks better than his Ebay pics would indicate. Not perfect, but the price is a lot better than LeatherZ.

my shift knob only has the ///M emblem (no 1-6 shift gate) so an illuminated knob would be pretty silly for me..

Just got mine installed today!

This knob was created by user "deadlysyns" from m3forum.net by taking the emblem from a Z4 //M lit shift knob (part # 25117836906 http://www.realoem.com/bmw/showparts.do?model=BT93&mospid=49345&btnr=25_0411&hg=25&fg=10&hl=1) and a standard ZHP 6 speed shift knob (part # 25117896886 http://www.realoem.com/bmw/showparts.do?model=AV53&mospid=47725&btnr=25_0328&hg=25&fg=95&hl=29). He even upgraded the LED lighting so that it glows evenly as Charlie posted above. The wiring is tapped into the ashtray light, and the dimming function even works... And of course, the back light goes on and off with the parking / headlights.

He did an amazing job. Install took about 10 minutes...

Bling = Light

Clean(OEM) = No light

Depends on what you're after.

Ebay = Roll dice

Seems like the eBay ones (at least the one linked in this thread) look better (i.e. more uniform lighting) than the pics would lead you to believe. Personally, I think that while the lit knobs do look pretty cool, I wouldn't value one more than $50 – $60.

I've always wanted an illuminated shift knob, but the installation looks like a big ol' PITA of wiring. I hate wiring. I once tried to re-wire my first E30 so that the fogs came on with just the parking lights on, and I messed it up so then the headlights didn't work.

Has anyone tried spitzbube's new knobs? Looks like the M-logo lights up now. At $130, I'm tempted to try (leatherz will cost me a net $290, and I don't even know how much deadlysyns charges)

A part of me wants to hold off though since the f10 m5 comes with a lighted zhp knob and it's only a matter of time until the part number is listed in the etk.
