My friend has a 1992 E36 318i and he says that every time he goes over a bump or pothole his steering wheel jerks to the right and then re-centers....any ideas what this could be?

Yea, ball joints, CABs. How many miles on the Control Arms? Probably a good idea just to replace both Control Arms and Bushings.

Yea, anything in the steering/suspension that is worn is possible. I would check ball joints, and like echo said CA bushings. I am not familiar enough with BMWs to fully give you any true insight though, Ive never looks at BMW steering set up.

The e36's suspension gets real tired around 100,000. I have a 1995 e36 with 91,000 and it needs a full refresh. Shocks, struts, Rear Trail Arm bushings, Shock mounts, Control Arms, Control Arm Bushings, Sway bars and Tie Rods. There are some half decent suspension kits out there for a fair price.

Not too far from the truth, especially if you ever have the pleasure of driving the Cross Bronx Expressway. Whimpy cars are known to have been swallowed whole by that miserable road.

I will never go back there again.

Unfortunately that road is sometimes a necessary evil for me to get to the rest of the world.
