When I run across a picture on the web that catches my eye I bookmark it and name the bookmark with a few keywords and what it is I liked; composition, technique, subject, etc.

I don't consider it polite to grab images off the web and re-post, even if you do give a link and / or credit so let's stick to a format of a brief description and a link.

I'll start with Thierry Legault who uses some mathematical calculations and a computer controlled telescope with a Canon 5D attached to catch a picture of the Space Shuttle and the International Space Station passing in front of the Sun:

There are a handful or photographers I admire extremely and I'll share them slowly.

Here is one of them:

Julian De La Rosa III

The man is incredible with landscapes.

That's crazy. I was on POTN a couple of weeks ago. Some of the guys that do stuff like this get CRAZY results.

I'm not Casey, but can say that Gursky is a world-famous photographer. His work can be seen in some of the most prominent art galleries/museums in the world. He signed the back of the Rhein II picture.

Here is a little information Rhein II: http://www.christies.com/LotFinder/lot_details.aspx?intObjectID=5496716

In particular, read the lot notes.

Mark told you exactly what I would have told you. 1. It is a Gursky. 2. It is signed. 3. It is the only one of its type in the world 4. It was shot on (I am assuming) medium, or large format film and there are a ton of details in the original that are not easily seen in the scaled down/downgraded digital version.
5. The art market is on a downswing as is the Euro and investors are putting more faith in the value of the art than the value of the Euro.

I don't get it either. Most Ansel Adams don't fetch that much. Besides, for roughly the same money I could get two basketballs in a fish tank:

I was surprised at the quality of some of the photos people in my local photo club take.

This one, "View of Prague Castle II" (http://www.flickr.com/photos/dimeophotos/5974062242/) by img finder (http://www.flickr.com/people/dimeophotos/), was one of my most recent favorites.

Made me want to go back to the Med. Or Europe. Or somewhere with this kind of architecture. Like Ottawa, Canada.

I like it. Its all about the lines, the ratios and the specific placement of those lines and ratios in the frame. If it was financially accessible to me I'd hang it in my house for sure, but it'd need to be a print and sold for like $250-400 with a really nice frame.

I did a quick search and couldn't find a website but there are quite a few results in a Google image search. This one in particularly caught my eye:

Yeah I have seen that one many times, I believe she did a diptych of it with a very very similar shot but off by a few inches. Really liked what I saw. She had an exhibit at the Art Inst. of Chicago this summer I went and saw, it was pretty cool.

I saw that she had a traveling exhibit. I would have liked to see them in person, apparently it was in LA September 23 - October 29 2011. Oh well... I couldn't find a website for her or cities and dates for exhibits.

Good thing she doesn't own a ZHP or she would kill Dane's 4th quarter photo contest

Happy Veterans Day to all that have served (especially to those who never made it back)

http://polination.files.wordpress.com/2011/07/standing-watch-by-frank-glick.jpg

about the picture:

Frank Glick, an amateur photographer, captured this amazing image at Fort Snelling National Cemetery in Minnesota. He thought that the family of the veteran buried at that gravestone might like to have a copy, and did some research on Sgt. Maurice Ruch.

Ruch, a veteran of World War II, was a US Army marksman who served in the Aleutian Islands and earned a Bronze Star. Then he went home, became an engineer and got married. John Tevlin of the Star Tribute spoke with Ruch’s widow, Vivian, and best friend, Jack Kiefner:

I told Vivian that some cultures believe the eagle is a symbol, not only of patriotism and dignity, but a messenger between heaven and earth. She nodded solemnly.

“I’d say the eagle had a very good eye when he landed on Maurie, and he was respected,” she said.

“I miss him,” said Vivian as she picked up the photo. “He was a good man and a good provider.”

“The eagle couldn’t have picked a better person,” said Kiefner.

US Navy official description:
Crash landing of F6F-3, Number 30 of Fighting Squadron Two (VF-2), into carrier's port side 20mm gun gallery, November 10,1943. Lt. Walter L. Chewning,Jr., USNR, the catapult officer, is climbing up on the planes side to assist the pilot from the burning aircraft. The pilot, Ensign Byron M. Johnson, escaped without significant injury. USS Enterprise was then en route to support the Gilberts Operation.
Some more facts:
Ens. Johnson later became an Ace with 8 confirmed Japanese aircraft downed. When the plane skidded into the gun pit it ruptured the drop tank, that Lt. Chewning is standing on, causing the fire.

This is a site that provides my inspiration to capturing a story. The photographers here are a personafiction of "A Picture is worth a thousand words."

I've been following that sight for a few years now and seen a fantastic variety of diversity from around the world. FYI; follow it on facebook and see the new publications as the come out.

One of my favorite sets: http://www.boston.com/bigpicture/2010/01/harbin_ice_and_snow_sculpture.html

^^Only to page 3 and I'm amazed.

The thing that blew me away the most was; I lost my job in October of that year on the third day of the stock market crash, days later I found the post "Detroit Decay" that had just started on 7-8-08. Those pictures will probably stay in my mind for the rest of my life. Here-Here to the photographers; they never knew what was just around the corner when they captured these timeless masterpieces.

Took this today at hole 18. Just moved to Colorado last week. It is a magical place. Even the camera on the iPhone 4s couldn't make this look bad.

(unfortunately, this image is the product of a couple different shots, and poorly Photoshopped together at that. However, it is nevertheless, and inspiring image)

Ran across this today. No idea if it is real but it gives me goose bumps just looking at it.

I'm traveling in Paris right now and seeing what man has created years ago is inspiring. To know that human ingenuity has never stopped and we continue to dream and build more and more feats of engineering.

Yeah....that's insane. I guess the cat was 10 feet away and he was able to jump in a Jeep. Closest without being eaten.

Funny how it can be clear and hot at the beach then you go into the mountsins here in Hawaii and it gets cool, cloudy and rains. Such diverse climates....awesome place :)

I need to go back there again someday Kevin.... for now, I'm content being in Hawaii for the next week ;)

Took this panorama....sorry I didn't keep the camera perfectly straight but you get the idea...;)

I gotta do more of these while I'm here...

A few more pics from the Aloha state ;) The quality is that from an iPhone... I chose not to bring my Nikon during this trip because of something a co-worker had told me from his trip....

The view was simply amazing from Hickam AFB at the beach this morning and when I drove to the mountains it was completely different there...

Wasn't driving fast since I'm not familiar with the roads, especially when wet... was doing more like 30mph when I took these pics...

You are correct in your assumption Seth. Whenever I come to Hawaii for work it is always at Pearl Harbor at the Submarine base.

Agreed. I was in Germany & France 2-3 weeks ago so I visited some of the cathedrals there & made a stop at Versailles. The architecture there is beautiful!

Where was that pic taken?

Rovert

Versailles is beautiful. I was there in November. My camera was telling me to quit with the shutter. LOL.

This is the cathedral: http://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Santi_Apostoli,_Rome

It's just north of the Coliseum. I walked 13 miles that day even going to the Vatican. Camera was tired. Feet were tired. Eyes were tired winking into the viewfinder!
