Coming from the Japanese word boke meaning "blur" or "haze", or boke-aji, bokeh is "the way the lens renders out-of-focus points of light" (http://photojpn.org/words/len.html), this side of photography is one that fascinated me even before I knew what it was. The day I bought my first camera, I bought a 50 1.8, and that was the main lens I shot with. The bokeh just always made me smile.
This thread is dedicated to shots created by YOU, strictly YOU.
Let's see everyone's contributions!
I'll keep adding mine as we go along!

For some reason I caught on this trend as well. By using a stock lens though and only shooting at 3.5, it's been limited.
However, these are some of mine :(

Not sure I see any bokeh here in the last few posts... just shallow DOF
Bokeh is out-of-focus points of light, I don't see much light in these... or do I have bokeh all wrong?

No. I think you have it right. There are actually 2 styles of bokeh. Hollywood style, and cream cheese style.
Hollywood style is where you have the typical circular lights in the background, out of focus.
Creamcheese is where objects in the background are completely washed out and out of focus. I think several photos here have zero bokeh.

What I mean, is there is nothing in focus in the Big Ben shot. It was my understanding that the subject should be in focus while the background is washed out.

Well as CW would say thats the difference between a photo and art.
To me artistically the point of that photo is to keep stuff out of focus while maintaining its overall shape/form so its recognizable. It is about creating a feeling about where you are more than an accurate depiction of where you are.
Bokeh doesn't have to do with having a foreground/background, as you can see by the 1st photo there is none there either, it's about the light. Now if this thread was titled DOF, then yes, foreground/background is the main principle we would be seeing and all of those photos on page 1 would then be right on target.

So this basically says that bokeh is just out of focus elements that still retain some sort of their original shape but with a soft blur to it?
Wow, thats very interesting, I must have been looking at the wrong element of bokeh for like 4-5 years now. I always thought it was about the circles of light... maybe I was just surrounded by bad bokeh for a long time.
wsmeyer
09-26-2011, 05:02 PM
Bokeh has shape to it. If you have a lens with an odd number of blades it will be circular. Even number of blades will create bokeh in a shape with the same number of sides as blades; 8 blades = octagonal, 6 blades = hexagonal. Also, lenses with light falloff towards the edges will have bokeh with much more pronounced shapes.
William.
UdubBadger
09-26-2011, 05:04 PM
that all makes sense. so it's not really the circle light that is the principle of bokeh but more of the overall blury disfigured shapes that make it?

bokeh is not just DOF, nor is it just about distorted soft blurry circles but it's extreme DOF to the point where it begins to distort the shapes that are severely out of focus, be it points of light or shapes/objects?

That's my chalkboard E30. Tis chalk, not ice (I forgive you <3)
Is the transition to out of focus hella good? Yes, it's bokeh
For the record: every photo taken with the cream machine (aka the Nikkor 85mm f/1.4D) has bokeh. Even if it doesn't even have any out of focus areas in it, it has bokeh.

Every answer in here is pretty much correct. Bokeh is interpretive. It is, as Neil said, an aesthetic that either adds to or detracts from a shot. Not all bokeh is good bokeh. It can be creamy, it can be dreamy, it can be Hollywood style, it can make your mom smile. Tis nothing more than an aesthetic element of a shot that is achieved by shooting at a very shallow depth of field. Not kind of shallow, not pretty shallow, but very shallow.

I wanted to reply to this and first say I don't have an exact answer as to what is bokeh. I know what looks good to me and maybe it is the DOF or maybe it is bokeh. That much I do not care... somethings look good and others don't. Some lenses produce a nice creamy bokeh and others do not. I know there are quite a few photos in here from everyone that I stopped scrolling and took a 2nd look... With that said I think too many are caught up on this 'pro' thing. I would personally put more effort into worrying about who is a 'pro' and put more time into learning, taking photos and absorbing knowledge.
It seems in many circles that trying to become a pro at photography is some holy grail to photographers. Getting paid does not make you a pro in my book. There are many a pro that needs to go back and spend some time just taking some shots and learning/progressing their skill/art. Come to a track event with me and see the pros work, their results and the way they handle themselves during a race weekend. Compare this to other self proclaimed pros at the track... you might just be surprised. Some of the best photographers I know never use the word pro to describe themselves. I have buddies that have never used or had media credentials and their portfolio would surpass many a photog with a little blue vest...
My point being is take photos. Learn. Absorb. Take some more photos. Do not worry about who is a pro or even what a pro is... that will only hamper your progression in photography. A lot of my friends will have discussions about how I have 'made it' and I am l33t pro and what not. I look at it a different way. Sure I shoot for a race team, 2 magazines and a historical society... but my passion is motorsports and my business colleagues can shoot me under the bus. So how pro am I really? I spend my time shooting, learning and looking at other photogs shots. Take it all in... and enjoy the ride. This will get you further.

That was the point of my post. I have never told anyone "yeah I'm a pro photographer". I'll leave it that as well, as to not get into an argument.

I think this is where being a newbie hurts me. Also, I do not have a full frame camera. Full frame guys don't have to light their subjects typically? One of the advantages of having the Canon 5D Mark II is that you can just crank up the ISO to get light in?
Please educate, sir.
dinanm3atl
10-09-2011, 08:35 PM
Higher ISO performance. It also uses available light better. However a 7D could get similar results. The 'full frame' though is what a 'normal' film camera would be... what we are all used to. As I comment on Casey's photos there is just something else to them. Photos, even generic ones, just look better. What Gabe is talking about though is the high ISO performance. You don't necessarily need flash or artificial light. Where as a lower end camera might not be able to make it happen. There are plenty of Motorsport photogs that carry a 5D MKII... which is not a motorsports camera because at dusk or when the light starts to fade you can crank it up and get really good shots. Shots that the other guys are just watching... not enough light. OR start using 2nd shutter.

Obviously you guys need to properly expose your pictures but you've got an advantage that we do not: you can let more light in -- at higher ISO levels -- without sacrificing picture quality. I could never take my ISO to 3200 and it expect it to look the same as if you guys used ISO 3200 on yours.
Thanks, guys.

i think the point he was making was it's a bit cluttered of a composition so he's not sure what the focus of the photo was supposed to be, it looks fairly general of just a bunch of tools. Even though YOU know what it was, you need to use a variety of "tools" to show the viewer what he/she is supposed to be looking at.

it's the ledge of the parking lot. About 15ft headed west of where the car was.

10-16-2011, 10:23 AM
right, i gathered that but i guess I'm not really getting why it's in a diptych, was just curious of your rational for being paired with the each other artistically, or was just the location the reason?
C Withers Media
10-16-2011, 10:36 AM
If you know the area Seth it makes sense. I see the pairing, but I know the area like the back of my hand. That said, composition wise I think it would relate better to those not familiar with the area if the wooden border was on the left of the frame and there was more road in the shot than water.
Marcus-SanDiego
10-16-2011, 10:40 AM
That's why it was logical to me, too. We all know the area. The left photo is the extension of that parking lot where the car is. If you didn't know the area, though, it may not make as much sense.

People don't typically do things unless there's a reason.
Reason for my photography: because I felt like taking photos.
I don't want anyone looking at my photos and debating whether a tree in the background was composed a certain way to evoke emotions or something. I want people to see the photo as a whole and think "that's badass." Nothing more, nothing less.
Nit-picking/analyzing parts of a photo... I've never been a fan of that. It's not how to grow as a photographer, take it from me.

well I feel somewhat compelled to say something because of the previous page so...
Gabe, I was just curious because
1. like everyone said - I'm not familiar with the area so I don't get the relationship as some may.
2. my original question was simply, was the location the relationship or was it the form/aesthetics that you were paring? I don't believe there was any criticism in that question, just simply "picking your brain" about the shot.
3. i enjoy discussing these things about peoples work, not to sound like a know it all or big shot photographer, but more to learn myself through others experiences and discuss and compare processes. maybe along that path someone will take something I might have to offer and use it to gain knowledge on their work.... MAYBE.
Sorry to hear this got out of hand and we lost a member.

Thanks man, commercial looking images are important to me. This series from the skating rink will not be used in magazines, I am sure of it. It is my understading that they will be using the images to make fliers and local advertising for the roller derby league that functions from that facility.

Thanks Seth. There is some trickery happening in this shot. When I took the first shot of the building horizontally there was no depth to the texture, it looked flat. Knowing that hard light on a horizontal plane gives me the best opportunity to pull the true texture out of a subject, I shot vertically, pointing my lense directly up the building into the sun and making my subject horizontal to the light source being used and getting the textures to pop out.

Two oldies I may have shared elsewhere in Casey's corner. The feather is one of my faves from an artistic perspective (I was in a good mood shooting that day) and I recognize both have lots of room for technical improvement.
Both were taken with a Canon Powershot S2 IS digital camera.

The photo club I'm in at work does an exhibit in my building each year. This year's themes are "colorful" and "repeating shapes/patterns". I'm hoping I'll be inspired in the next few weeks to shoot something. Haven't found the right subject or shot yet. Not sure if there will be bokeh/SDOF, but I'm thinking at least one or two of the final shots for consideration will.

My local photo club had a wedding photog stop in and give us a chat on the bidness... said he was getting so weighed down from 2 cameras (bodies, lenses, flash) on his neck/shoulders (doing several weddings a weekend) that he found switching to the holsters to be quite liberating and much easier on his neck and back. I guess for some peeps doing this for a living the holsters may make sense.
Oh I forgot to mention... in case anyone was interested, the holster pictured is the Spider Camera Holster (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B004SIMNF0/ref=as_li_ss_tl?ie=UTF8&tag=zhpcom-20&linkCode=as2&camp=217145&creative=399373&creativeASIN=B004SIMNF0).

So Mark, as you often do with me I would like to ask you for some clarification on the above shot. Can you tell us what is going on in your mind to find a shot like that and walk us through the process from identifying the target (why this, how to make it interesting) all the way to choosing settings (why these settings for this shot) and even further beyond what you are looking for in post processing? I think it would be interesting to hear it from you.
