Let me give this a whirl.

One of the things that I look for is patterns (I'm always looking for repeating patterns). Here, you can see that the rings in the fence give me that. Additionally, the gate itself provides a repeating pattern. Similarly, look at the bricks on the building. You have repeating patterns there on both the right side and left side of my picture (even though I've blown out the background).

Further, I have focused on a particular ring on the fence. That one is in focus, while the rest of the rings are out of focus. Those out of focus rings serve as a frame for my in-focus ring. Same goes with the brick wall again. It serves as a frame for that in-focus ring as well (though the ring is much closer to the left-side bricks). Notice also that the rings are surrounded (top and bottom) by two long rails. Those frame the circles and help lead the viewer to my in-focus ring. The long rails also lead the viewer to the bokeh payoff on the right-hand side of the picture. Your eyes naturally follow the rings down toward the wall -- and right to the bokeh balls.

Meanwhile, I used an f/2.2 stop because I wanted the viewer to get some detail in the background. Even though I was using an f/1.4 lens, there was no need to shoot wide open. In fact, I rarely shoot wide open. Since I am close enough to my subject (the gate), I am going to get a nice blown out look anyhow. There is no point in shooting at f/1.4 (which often invites chromatic aberration and blows out my background completely). I also would have lost the background detail I was trying to preserve. When I was setting up my shot, I knew that I could get everything I needed at f/2.2. What's more, I've practiced enough to realize what my shot will look like at f/2.2. This is why I tell people it's so important to practice, practice, practice. You practice enough and you have a good idea of what your shot will look like before you ever shoot it. Still, after I took the shot, I still confirmed that I had the look I wanted. (I also wanted to make sure that the ugly sign on the blue door was blown out enough. It was.)

In post processing I shore up any compositional issues that weren't quite perfect straight out of camera. In this particular case, I cut a little bit of stuff off the left side of the picture (it was unnecessary) and I cut off a little bit off the right side of the shot (there was a lot of light over there that was distracting to me. I figured it would be distracting to my viewer, too).

Straight out of the camera, the picture lacked the warmth I preferred for this shot. As a result, I turned up the temperature just a bit. That did two things. One, it gave the bricks a bit more play in the picture and it gave me a nice reflection on the gate from the bricks.

Finally, I turned up the contrast just a bit, too, because I wanted the gate and bricks to be clearly separated. Ditto for my wall, which I wanted to be much brighter against my right side of the picture, which has shadows and green in it.

Believe it or not, there is probably more than that but I'll leave my analysis here. These are the major things I look at with a shot like this.

I think that is a perfectly logical explanation. Well done. Keep it up man and when you get a chance, teach me some of this stuff.

Haha. Sure. This is all of the stuff I learned from you and through my personal study during the past two months. I also took thousands of shots during that time period. There really is no substitute for practicing.

If you're waiting to be inspired, or have to wait for perfect conditions to shoot, you're going to fall behind. It's certainly easier to shoot in the early morning and at sunset but stuff happens between those time periods, too. If you haven't been practicing in difficult shooting conditions (as well as good conditions), you're going to get eaten up when you're forced to do it. I can shoot in the dark, light, fog, noon hour, sunset, sunrise, cloudy, overcast, you name it. Because of that, I can now concentrate on the specific shot at hand. I'm not worried about other things.

I shot with my kit lense for the first two years I owned a camera. Even until just a few weeks ago, I was using "inferior" lenses. I almost miss them sometimes as it can be quite rewarding to whip out an $80 piece of glass and do work.

that would make a bit more sense cuz the aperture would be lower @ 70mm and you'll get a little more bokeh cuz its a tele lens

Ok guys I have never shot Bokeh before so I hope i have somewhat of a grasp on this
There is no editing to this photo, it is fresh off the Camera (not sure in which direction to go editing this picture)

but is this truly Bokeh??
also please critique it, be as honest as possible I want to learn :)

C Withers Media
11-23-2011, 11:50 AM
Yes, it truly is bokeh. The focus on the flower seems a little soft though. There is some sort of white strand coming off of the flower that is pretty distracting, and the little buds coming off of the stem below the flower take away a lot for me. Other than that, the rule of thirds is in effect, subject is interesting enough, and you got the desired effect in the background. Keep shooting and mess around with it in post a little bit.

UdubBadger
11-23-2011, 02:36 PM
when shooting macro or non macro close ups like that one... I tend to turn my AF off and go manual focus to really make sure its sharp. Not a rule by any means cuz a lot of lenses will help you out if you are too close and not AF so you can't actually hit the shutter but I like to be in control of that stuff when shooting with such a small DOF.

jreyes19
11-23-2011, 07:46 PM

Got a new camera to play with!! This one is taken at 28mm F3.5 with the onboard flash bounced up against the ceiling. I want to get the 40mm 1.7 pancake lens for this camera when the budget comes around.

Yup. I'm fucked up. That's shallow depth of field upon further dissection of the definition.

"Coming from the Japanese word boke meaning "blur" or "haze", or boke-aji, bokeh is "the way the lens renders out-of-focus points of light""

Oh yea forgot equipment. Can't remember the ap or f stop as I suck right now and just getting into this. But taken with a Nikon D3000 with 18-55mm lens with a +4 / 52 mm magnifying lens slapped on the end of that bad boy. Wifey says a real macro lens is mucho money and the little screw on filter's are good enough for me. (She graduated from RIT so I will listen to her on the camera portion of our marriage.) :)

UdubBadger

i disagree, i think you shoulda shot it with the tag all the way in, gives it a certain feel like they line um all up and ship um all out as fast as they can, everything is for sale. I would also maybe suggest shooting at a HIGHER fstop so the focus isn't just 1 bike in, the rest out but more so 1 bike the main focus, then gradually going more out of focus for a bit of stronger play on the repetition.

Just to be clear guys - DOF is not always bokeh (which is a Japanese term for the small round reflections of light in a shallow DOF photo).

Secondly, shallow DOF is not just achieved by shooting at your lowest f stop, even though that makes the most difference. Focal length, distance to subject and even lens length to the sensor of the camera all come into play.

If you have an iPhone I highly recommend the app called Photobuddy. It has some calculations on DOF and other camera functions. Good stuff.

This is bokeh
12577

A lot of these are showing DOF so that's fine but just want to clear up what bokeh actually is. That's like calling every dog you see a German Shepard. All Shepards are dogs as all bokeh is DOF. But not all dogs are Shepards as not all DOF is bokeh.

Make sense?

This view right here is one of the few things making me still slightly consider and SMG when I buy an M3

Well let me show you my friends bill on his SMG pump repairs and it will instantly talk you out of it...

An SMG -> 6 Speed swap runs about a grand. After driving one, I wouldn't hesitate to buy an SMG, especially since they're usually $2-3k cheaper than comparable 6-speeds.

The swap from what I've seen runs a grand... In labor. Don't forget you need to buy the trans - if you can find one that doesn't need a rebuild.
