View Full Version : Accidentally ordered 265/35R18's for the stock rear wheels. Am I ok?!?

Long story short, I fat-fingered the order and didn't notice the 1-digit-offness of the size until they were on the wheels...
Am I totally screwed? These are Michelin Pilot Super Sports and Michelin says not to run 265's on less than a 9.0" wheel. Yikes!! :eyetwitch
What do you guys think?

Sadly no... found them on super-sale at "Discount Wheel Warehouse". Non-brand-new restocking fee is 50%.

Just got off the phone with them. Drove 6miles home and they will not exchange or accept returns. That's what I get for going with the "cheap" guys.

Sell the tires at another forum. That's what I'd do. Assuming they don't work on your car, of course.

I never had a problem running 265/35/18 on my OEM wheels. As a matter of fact the added grip aided in being more aggressive with throttle and brake inputs in corners since having 235 up front provided more than enough traction before any understeer.

if they mount and run ok, i don't see why not? might look a bit meaty out back tho.
I'm running pirreli P-zero nero all-seasons and they have been awesome in the weird weather Richmond, VA has had the last year. ride great, quiet, and handle well in the snow..
oh yeah they're cheap and have a 45k rated tread life (IIRC).

Thanks for the reassurance guys. At this point I have no choice but to run them and see how they do.
RVAzhp - I'm in Charlottesville and can definitely identify with the weird weather swings! I'm actually headed down to Richmond for a meeting in about an hour. Guess I'll get a good initial highway evaluation on 64!
I'll post some pics of the meatiness up in a bit.

What sized fronts did you mount?

I have (intentionally) mounted 235/40's in the front.
Put about 200miles on the 265s today, albeit mostly highway. I can say the ride seems more comfortable but I did notice the rear end didn't feel as firm or tight while cornering. Not to say it had less grip, just not as responsive...

you get any rubbing in the rear when going over big bumps? I would think that might be your only problem.

Also, it might throw your speedo off a little. There is a website that calculates that for you. Didn't see it in my bookmarks, but let me know if you can't find it.

The reason why your tires don't feel that steady feeling is because of the extra rubber tread that is flexing side to side. As your rubber gets stiffer with age and worn out more, there will be less moving from steering wheel input to tire. The ride will always be a bit more softer with brand new tread compared to worn out tires! With bald tires I had more grip on the road and I can take corners like a squirrel can run up vertical home siding...LOL. But come lots of rain, there wasn't enough tread to evacuate water. There's always a give some and lose some in any scenario! Even the best tires!

GPSes are really accurate for that too. I am 3 mph off on my car.
Radar clocked me at the same speed as my GPS as well.

Good point, forgot about that. And of course, BMW speedos are off anyway to start with, always just a little low.

Cool didn't know that. On my CSLs I'm running smaller diameter wasn't sure if it was because of that.

For clarity's sake, the BMW speedos read HIGH, your actual speed is lower. That's what I meant to say.
Let me see what my 'new' ZHP runs; it comes with D-Force Empower 9.5s on back, so if you want to dump these, I might be in the market! :)
Yup, you have the size I need!
