So now that the daily temps are dropping, I've noticed that my water temp isn't getting to the center of the gauge. It makes it to about 10:30-10:45 position, but that's it. What is this a sign of?

Time for a new thermostat. Your old one is not closing enough, resulting in excess coolant circulating and thus lower engine temperatures. Though not an emergency, I'd tend to it sooner than later.

^ yup
Stuck open thermostat or bad o-ring for the t-stat. Cheap and easy, get a new thermostat.

Better stuck open, than stuck closed.

Yup. Thermostat. Luckily, that is open, but if it sticks open, then it can stick closed. Replace asap. Mechanic 300 or so.

Yep. What they said. T-Stat. I had exact same symptoms on my 93 325is and took it to a mechanic who told me it was something else. I said, lets try a TStat first. He did & prob solved.

Not cheep, they're electronic. I got a quote for the wives 325CIc and it was $250 at the dealer complete or $130 for just the part. Probably a good time to change out the expansion tank too. I have not touche hers yet, with the summer heat the problem went away.

^Did not know it was that expensive, every other car I've dealt with is like 20$ -30$ for the t-stat, is there any way to manipulate the part to act like a normal one?

I thought the same thing until I called, my reply was, WHAT, could you repeat that? As for getting it to act like a normal one, I don't think so. I believe it is all connected back to the computer and the engine operating system.

At what mileage does the thermostat typically need replacing? Me - 55k, just got the p0128 code.

It's gonna depend......I would say typically around 100k. 55k seems a bit early....but would depend on environmentals and driving habits....imho

Old School Maintenance schedule recommends replacement of the thermostat at 60k.

Droid X. Tapatalk. Use it.

Mine was just done a few hundred miles ago (65k). Still seemed to work fine but I did have the code pop up

+1 thank you sir...

OEM unit from the local Dealer -130 bucks with the CCA discount. ECS has 4 to choose from under 80 bucks? This'll be my 2rd purchase from them and it just keeps getting better. The performance intake has paid for itself in smile factor for the sound alone.

Looks like Both Wahler ($51 http://www.wahler.de/index.php) and Behr ($62 http://www.behrgroup.com/Internet/behrcms_eng.nsf/) are rooted in Germany... but probably use the same Chinese supplier and then become Genuine BMW ($81) with the final shipment to the factory. My choice? Behr. I just like their website. I thinks its the color and the flashy animation. Then again, Whaler's logo is pretty cool and their webiste does have the rarely used Getty Images 'Group of diverse workers/High-fiving/waist up/facing camera' image which is a nice treat.

Then there is the MTC unit. In aluminum. And its the cheapest of the lot at 49 bucks. Seems like aluminum would be a better choice over the injected plastic (or whatever it is) that's used in the other units. Especially if you pronounce it "aluminium". I'll eliminate it from my choices simply becuase the oem unit is plastic and I trust BMW's material choice, but not in the same way that I beleive them when they say my vanos rattle is a "normal noise". Afterall farts are normal noises, but nobody really wants to hear them.

That, sir, is the quote of the day. :rofl

BTW, I just found out the other day that BMW of San Diego does not take anymore BMW CCA members discount. They say, bad economy.

Since when? I was just there a few weeks ago and they still gave me 10% off

Just to beat the dead horse, mine was exhibiting same symptoms - full operating temp was near lower line sometimes, middle sometimes, etc.

Replaced t-stat this weekend, operating temp is now dead middle every time.
