Thank you! lol I like the White on White :D

haha ohh goodness...I took her out the first day it snowed to hit the gym, coming home, I decided that's the last i was taking her out till the majority of it melted. The drivers of GA do NOT know how to cope with the snow/ice. lol

After she got home from the gym... lol

lol Has it really been THAT long since I've posted on here? Goodness. Sorry guys, guess I've been a little busy lately. First off, thanks for the compliments guys! Much appreciated! :)

So I guess the majority of you guys don't know that Labor day last year (my moms bday) I was on my way to work and was practically ran over by a transfer truck. The guy said, "He didn't see me." which i found hard to believe since I had yellow everything light-wise and BRIGHT and it was not even a hidden intersection. First thought, I didn't think the car was totaled. It all looked repairable, so what do i do when i got home... lol after I found out my carbon hood was discontinued even from Modbargains... I entered an auction on ebay for a Vorsteiner Double-Side Carbon Fiber hood and I won it. lol Had it shipped from Australia.
Next week, I find out the 330 was deemed totaled. It got to me pretty well and September was a rough month as you guys know how it is... You get that connection with it and all the memories flash back. It was hard to say goodbye to her. Lot of blood, sweat, tears and money were put into her.

After that, I decided for a long time, i couldn't do an e46 anymore. That it was gonna be too hard to drive it and not be the same. So i was shooting for a 135i 6sp as I've always loved them and the n54 is easy to tune. Turns out though, i found my dream e46 M3 (All options, SMG, Alpine White on Black Nappa) about a month and a half later (So like the end of October). I went out and test drove it... After i drove it, i knew it was the one. For the most part it was well-maintained and slightly modified already but it had worked needed to be done, so I fixed what needed it and have since just been doing up-keep and modding.

Here was my 330 right after the accident. (btw, wasn't my fault, so M3 is paid for by insurance :D)
https://scontent-a.xx.fbcdn.net/hphotos-frc3/t1/1186183_10151886035432053_1946506391_n.jpg

and btw... I know this isn't a buy/sell thread, but while I'm on topic. I do still have the new Carbon Fiber hood from Vorsteiner for sale. (asking 2500) But if one of you wants it, We can work with the price/shipping.
The hood on my M. I tried to place it on the M3 but the body is too wide compared to facelift coupes.

EDIT: Marcus speaking here, peeps. Guys, after spending some time over at BMWMafia.com this morning, it became obvious to me that we need a photo of the day thread for cars. We definitely have enough photographers who can help fill this thread up.

This is for pictures YOU take. Showcase your photography skills here. If you want to post pictures of awesome cars (using pictures you did not take), you can post them here (http://www.zhpmafia.com/forums/showthread.php?179-Non-ZHP-Pure-Sex-On-Four-%284%29-Wheels-Thread).

Enjoy!

This picture made it into BMW of Sudbury's Facebook page from yesterday's cars & coffee meet. There were a lot of exotics as well as American muscle cars there... With all the cars, the staff selected a few pictures to post and my ///M and Patrick's Imola Red ZHP made the cut :biggrin Just wanted to share this with everyone...it was a nice meet with a lot of fellow car enthusiasts enjoying the view and stories :thumbsup

Saw it at the LA Auto show last year, it's an amazing car. Great pics of it. Nice that it's at a dealer, doubt they have a bunch. I haven't been to a dealer lately to see. Don't recall if I saw one on the road or not, don't think so.

EDIT: BTW, this should probably be in "I Spy". This thread is for your "best work".

This one was at BMW of Chattanooga. I was told that it was a corporate demo with 500 miles on it and not currently fore sale.
The door looks cool but, a real PITA to get in and out of.

Shutter 1/200 F4 ISO 100.....I needed faster shutter but I was having a brain fart in the heat......

nah shutter is good there, bump your f-stop up to F11 or higher and then give yourself some light compensation at ISO 400-800 or whatever.
Make sure you're shooting in AI Servo focus mode to track the car as it moves.

When you get more steady at locking focus you can shoot down under 1/60th (i aim for about 1/30) and drag the subject through the frame to get tons of blur but sharp focus on the car like this.

Thanks for the tips...really was a brain fart/inexperience moment...below are as few that I thought turned out better from the St. Petersburg Grand Prix last month. Only issues I had with these was out bright it was.

Can't remember the settings past the fact that these were shot at 200mm and 200+ MPH is a hell of a speed to catch the car in center of frame. lol

yep looks better :thumbsup.

Trick is to shoot them coming out of corners when they're not going that fast and make them look like they're going really fast by getting mega background blur. ;)

It was an odd situation. The driver was following/chasing a MB G Wagon. Neither one had license plates or even temporary paper plates. They drove quite quickly on the highway and I ended up next to the GL550 and it was driven by a kid that couldn't have been more than 20. No passenger.

I later looked up the dealership named on the license plate brackets (Freeman Motors) and the two cars weren't in their inventory.

I went up to Calabogie Motorsport Park in Canada over the past weekend with Botond and took a few pictures... the ///M (pics above) got my attention.

Botond had a good weekend running Wobbie on the track and I had fun taking pictures from different view points. All the cars were running very fast...seems to me they were running much faster at Calabogie compared to Limerock.

Towards the end of Sunday’s events I was presented with an opportunity to ride along with an instructor (Mark) in his 135i (pictured above). Holy hell was I in for a treat!! Mark drove his 135i really hard and I lost track of how many laps I was going after I had counted 10... when I was ready to go in we came up on an E92 ///M (pictured below) and Mark had to go back out to chase him down for two additional laps so I said let’s do this!! Mark ran his car even harder and I could not stop giggling because I was actually loving every minute of this ride!!!

Thanks guys! Going to Calabogie is an amazing experience and if you're within driving distance it is well worth the trip up. :thumbsup

This track is fast and was a lot of fun to be on! I only wish there were more spots where you could take pictures but with that said... the areas I was able to take pictures worked out very well and the track officials were very accommodating. I will be back next year with my ///M unless work intervenes... :drevil

Agreed

@Rovert Trevor - Did you use a polarizing filter, or just post-processing? It looks super clean with no reflections!

btw - I love the power dome - that would be about the only reason to trade the ZHP for an M3, and my E71 is a few years too old (although, if we would get a good hailstorm....)

At Laguna, these are called cheater pipes. When you’re afraid you’ll get black flagged for your exhaust and don’t want to change, you put these on to decrease noise and often point away from the sound booth. It’s pretty standard on most upgraded cars there. Or you let off at the booth, but riskier.

You see it at Road America and Lime Rock, too, but it feels like Monterey is the most likely to actually happen. “I built my McMansion next to this 60 year old race track, how was I supposed to know it’d be loud?!?” Fucking morons.

Then you have the idiots trying to get rid of the races at Belle Isle. It’s an island, nearly half a mile from the shore, nearly 3/4 mile from the nearest residential structure, and between the IMSA and Indy races it brings nearly $30M to the Detroit economy (which we all know is in absolutely desperate need of money) over the course of one week. How stupid can people possibly be?

YoitsTmac

My Airbnb was two miles away and the cars were ambient noise. If you’re not into cars, I can see it. But as 704 said, you should know what you’re signing up for. It was also a low decibel weekend

704sw
07-22-2018, 11:48 AM
I think geography has a big impact too. I’m sure the noise carries out in Monterey because there are no trees or anything to act as a barrier, but there’s also a lot of traffic to add to the ambient noise. VIR, which is in the middle of friggin’ nowhere, is surrounded by a ton of big pines and oaks. You can barely hear anything from just outside the gate unless it’s a pro race weekend. The only way the little town nearby could possibly complain about noise is from the broadcast helicopter.

I know a lot of people who live near NASCAR tracks get really upset with the traffic. And while it’s understandable, you never hear people bitching about other sporting events’ traffic to the point of trying to remove the venue from the area.

The D700 I've had since they first came out (very old tech by modern standards). The Cup car was a 50/1.8, everything else was with either an 85/1.8 or an old film 80-200 f/4. The Cup car was sadly shot in .jpg, so not much shadow detail to bring up. I'm really only just starting to dabble in LR, so it's all experimentation at this point. I found 2 more from last year's race:

Quick shot, not square to the car, distracting shadow from the garage, but this is one sexy ass. And my god, the sound...

This was cropped very heavily, but it's one of the better shots I have of the race winner. Again, shot in .jpg and it quickly fell apart as I tried playing with the sliders...

sounds like a nice rig! You got a good eye and you can definitely track a car on the track better than me, as in like keep it in focus as it moves at 100+. Keep up the good work!

Agreed. This is every photographers conundrum at different levels right? Back when I would shoot for a living, I'd be honest with clients and tell them what I liked and what I wished I got from my favorite shots. The client always overwhelmingly said the work was fantastic. When you shoot and edit so much, you notice things that the "average" viewer wouldn't.

Kidding aside, though, how the hell did you get down to 1/20th? ND filter? At 100 ISO and with a CPL I couldn’t get an accurate exposure slower than ~1/125th.

The APS-C sensor wouldn’t make a difference there, but f/25 definitely would. My old telephoto lens has a minimum f/16 aperture, so I can’t slow the shutter too much without ND or CPL filters.

Going to races has really reignited my joy of photography, but my god I do not miss going through this many pictures to find the good ones.

I've been seeing what my upgrade options are and there aren't too many. I would most likely need a full-frame lens and they are pricey. This kit lens seems to do a good job.

This photo probably needs some post-processing. Not sure if that would help with the white of the car melting into the background.

I’ve barely scratched the surface of the pictures I took this weekend, but here’s one from Friday’s practice which turned out nicely. I need to bring up the shadows a touch. Unfortunately this RSR’s engine went boom halfway through Sunday’s race, and my ears were only able to be raped by one Porsche instead of two.

How does one get such sharp shots? Is it the lens and panning? I don't think my shorts ever get that sharp. But I heard this lens gets pretty soft after ~150mm.

It's definitely the panning and nailing down the tracking speed. All the ones I'm going to post from this race are handheld, between 100 and 200 ISO except the paddock pictures, and range between 1/125th and 1/250th of a second. Marcin, are you using continuous autofocus? Single-point autofocus or multipoint? Multipoint might be throwing the camera off as you pan, and if you're not in continuous focus that'll definitely make a difference.

Lenses certainly can soften as you reach the minimum and maximum focal lengths, just as they are softer at their min. and max. aperture. I try not to stop down past f/11 or so, if possible, because I know this lens gets soft at f/16, but I don't hesitate to shoot at any focal length in the range. I'd speculate it's just practicing the panning technique (shooting at my track events has been really good practice for the big boy races, and I can tell a big difference between my pictures from last year and this year).

I try to pick one car for each pass (2 -3 cars if there's a good train of cars), and I track it in through the viewfinder long before I'm ready to shoot. That helps me match my panning speed with that of the car. I also try to pick something on the car to be what I'm tracking--usually the car's number, or some part of the livery with good contrast that I can see easily.

As I've gotten better I've also been more comfortable zooming in tighter on the cars while shooting rather than trying to crop in tight afterwards. Sure I'll have some pictures where part of the car is out of frame, but those are increasingly less common. My camera is only 12mp, so I lose a lot of resolution if I have to crop a lot. Letting your lens "do the cropping" will always be sharper than removing pixels.

Automatic AF or Continuous AF - automatic should kick it to continuous if it detects a moving subject I believe. The autofocus did seem to be playing up a bit, focusing on the wrong stuff at the wrong time.

I set it to shutter speed priority, so the only thing I set is the shutter speed and rarely EV adjustment.

Yep, I've been trying to do the same focusing on one car, though I've found it rough tracking as they fly by right in front of me. I did get greedy a few times with bad results. Near 210mm (315mm FF comparative) seems impossible up close.

I guess 24MP should give me more fudge factor comparatively, which I'm sure I'll need.

Does a shot like this require panning?

Maybe try forcing it into continuous with single point? I also tend to underexpose by -0.3 to -0.7, as you can also lighten shadows but you can never darken clipped highlights.

Nope, that shot is all about the quick shutter. I guarantee they prefocused for a spot on the track and did a burst as Bamber took the 912 through that corner. I tried a couple similar pictures of the Porsche Cup cars, but I haven’t gone through them yet.

Is your camera mirrorless or does it have a viewfinder? I couldn’t imagine panning with a camera like my parents’ Sony NEX.

Is that possible? Is that the focus area setting?

Both, mirrorless with electronic viewfinder

Should be an option, or at least I’d certainly hope so.

I also had a thought just now—Sony has image stabilization built into the body, right? I wonder if panning is making the stabilization freak out. Have you tried turning it off, or checking to see if there are multiple stabilization modes? For example on Canon and Nikon there’s usually 2 IS/VR modes, one which stabilized on both X and Y axis, and mode 2 only stabilizes on the Y axis (perfect for panning).

I'll have to check, but I don't think there is a single point focus. I watched a video and learned about a new focus mode(flexible spot lock-on)....which my camera doesn't have.

Not this one. It's in the newer more expensive models. It might've been the weather and the automatic autofocus. Next time, I'll do continuous only.

Okay, Marcin, I did some digging online and here are my suggestions for the a6000, which is the camera you have based on the info tab on Flickr:

-Keep “Lock-On” turned off

-Force the camera into AF-C. It defaults to AF-A which will shift from AF-S to AF-C on its own, but that’s going to take a second to process and to do that. It’s fine if you’re taking pictures of a toddler running around the backyard, but when race cars are blitzing past at 150mph+ you don’t have time to wait for the camera to think. Keep it in AF-C [emoji5]

-Set the focus area to “Flexible Spot” mode. From there you can set the location and size of the single spot from large to small, I’d go medium or small, but I’d need to actually look through your viewfinder to know for sure. The smaller the spot, the more precise it will be.

-Spot placement is key for composition and your ability to pan. I like to keep the AF point in the center. I know that sounds backwards from ideal composition (you want more space in front of a car than behind a car, so it looks like the car has “space to move”) but I find I’m more likely to get the entire car in the frame that way. I’d rather fix composition by cropping on the computer than risk chopping off the back of the car. But if you keep it in “Flexible Spot” instead of “Center” you still have the ability to adjust the spot to where you pan and track the best, which for you might not be in the dead center.

I hope that helps!

Vertically my shots are usually centered, but horizontally depending on the timing the subject could be either left, center, or right.

Picked out a few (too many) shots from the first day (Friday) of the race weekend. I wanted to go through all 3 days, but it took pretty long to go through this one alone.

Really nice shots, Marcin. Those CTSCC shots taken at 1/60 came out much better than I could do at such a slow shutter speed! I really need to buy a stabilized lens -or- just suck it up and start carrying around my monopod.

In addition to the Super Trofeo pic I favorited on Flickr, I quite like the last shot of the Tommy Milner’s Corvette. He decided to play bumper cars with the #911 on the first lap at VIR, so all my pictures of the #4 have very obvious front fender damage.

I think those pictures were from the Friday practice, so no bumper cars commenced yet.

I wanted to get some good shots of this Mercedes, but it looks like this one beat the others by a good bit:

awesome panning shots guys. only had one thing to say which was regarding whe you pan and have a shot come out where the front of your subject is motion blurred and the rear is sharp or vice versa... its all in your focus point.

on my d800 I use continuous focus 9 point and I set my main focal point in my view finder so that when im shooting the focus is on the front of the car or the nose.. sometimes in the middle of the car..

if the car is panning but moves into another focal plane.. which is very possible when they are driving so fast on a curved part of the track, then your subject could have a part motion blurred that you did not want.

stopping down to F16 or if your lens supports it then up to F32 would help mitigate that.

on F16 lenses I try to stick close to below but never min aperture.. basically i never shoot at f16 or f32 due to lens diffraction and the subject being over sharpened.

Totally agree with everything you mentioned, especially with specific parts of the car remaining in focus. Unfortunately (for me, at least) some of the cars’ liveries really give my AF system a hell of a time, which is why I stick with the number panel on the side. If they’re running headlights I’ll use that to help my AF, but during these daytime sprint races a lot of them do not.

And at 160+mph sometimes you’re doing well just to keep pace at all lol.

Yep, especially when the distance closes in like that Corvette shot. By the time it was directly in front, I'm guessing my tracking was nowhere close. I'm seeing a lot of my shots have the rear in focus, where it would've been nice to have less blur in the front.

I usually point my feet towards when they pass directly or in the direction towards the end of the pan. Is that about right?

Maybe this is my shooting background, but I position my feet as if I’m firing a rifle. So, if a car is passing me from left to right, my left foot will be pointed towards the track, and my right foot will be my plant foot, behind the weight of my body with my toes facing towards the right. Let me know if that does or doesn’t make sense.

Here's one of the rare opportunities I had to keep my focus locked on the front of the car. They absolutely haul ass up to the pit speed limit sign...

Totally understand what you mean. For whatever reason I find it easier to get the panning speed in sync with the cars as they're going past, and not as they're approaching. In my bursts the first few are usually shit, but the middle and late few usually turn out okay. Case in point below.

Great shot of the Trofeo, and I really like the pic of Kat’s Acura going through the corner. That’s a really tough shot to pan well!

It seems like the shot after is okay, so it must've been panned well. That's entering into Canada Corner. It looks that Audi under the bridge is going offline a bit and slightly squirelly.
