Feel free to post a few pictures a day in this thread. I want to dissuade someone from dumping 70 pictures of an apple in here. This isn't the thread for that. And no cars, either. There is a photo of the day thread for that here (http://www.zhpmafia.com/forums/showthread.php?4677-***Official-Photo-of-the-Day***-CARS).
This thread gives you a chance to post up some of your best work (using whatever tool you have). This is the place to showcase your photography skills. If you're looking to post cell phone pictures that are not high quality, for example, this is not the thread for it.
All skill levels welcome. If you are looking for feedback on your picture, feel free to ask.
Enjoy.

This one is for Dane. I think he gets a kick out of Zippy's face when he's frowning. Mom, on the other hand, is smiling, which just adds to Zippy's face.

^^ That is BAD ASS
She sure is straining a lot though for what looks like ~ 30lbs.
William.
65lbs...which is 65% of her body weight, and I assure you she was not straining at all...... We had her do about about 30 curls before we lit the weights on fire just to get her popping. This is a throwaway from a set that will run in Flex magazine. Plus, she was in that position holding the weight like that for about 45 seconds per time we torched the weights so we could get multiple shots and angles.
Then, we made it rain.

This photo was taken on Labor Day 2011. There was no photo manipulation to the sky whatsoever (although I wish I had a UWA). Just appreciating the beauty of nature. I love sunsets like this.

nice shots casey....
you using a combo of blur and high pass on that 1st one or just blur?
Neither... I was shooting at a very high f/stop 3.5 IIRC and using strobes that sync at 1/250 of a second........It shouldn't be possible without blowing everything out, but its possible.

Casey, I've got to tell you-- one of my favorite things in your artwork is how you constantly find creative ways to integrate your watermark into the piece.
Appreciate the fact that someone would put that much thought into something that is an afterthought for most.
Thanks Keith, I try to not do anything by accident, in the case of this photo, the watermark was non visible in the lower left which is my standardized location. This just led me to find an alternative spot to try and visibily hide it.

It really depends on the content, the subject, and the situation. If you would like, you can give me a call anytime tomorrow after 12 noon EST and ask me specifics. Typically people don't like having their photo taken because "uncle bob" or "cousin jimmy" with his fancy camera has made them look bad enough times to make them not want to do it. Learn a little bit about your subject and make their content relevant, put them in an environment where they are comfortable, show them right off the bat that you know what you are doing, and things get a lot easier.

it's the reflection..it's pretty cool how the slight ripples distorted it but it still reflected..lots of little things in this shot that I think are cool. Including the reflections of all the canvas... if you look close you can see the blue around the mast reflection..

It is all ambient. We were on a very steep hillside and even if I wanted to use lights on this one, there would have been no way for them to secure.
There were spotlights pointing at the fountain.....figured it was worth shot.

Casey.......I was reading up, and if you slow down the shutter speed a bit, you could have made the water look smoother/mistier, and more whimsical, correct?
I know there were other goals and hurdles for the shot, which is why you chose, what you chose.....but I'm just asking....
C Withers Media

Correct Dane, you can make water milky and creamy by letting the shutter stay open longer. That is a very desirable effect in landscape type photos.

Dane - Checkout my post #99 on page 10. That was 8min.
Start with your highest ISO setting and largest aperture and take some test shots to figure out the shutter speed. Don't worry about camera shake just aim it at the darkest area you want to expose correctly. Once you get that work it out on some scratch paper.
Let's say you start with 1/60s f4.0 ISO 6400
1/30s f4.0 ISO 3200
1/15s f4.0 ISO 1600
1/8s f4.0 ISO 800
1/4s f4.0 ISO400
1/2s f4.0 ISO200
1s f4.0 ISO100
Then you can work on the f stops...
2s f5.6 ISO100
4s f8 ISO100
8s f11 ISO100
16s f16 ISO100
32s f22 ISO100
That was just an example I made up but afterwards you can see that if your first time was that "fast" your only choice to get a long exposure would be to use neutral density filters.

Yup, roughly four times as long. I'll be in Yosemite again next week and will try some more if the weather cooperates. Also, at some point your going to need to use the cameras internal long exposure noise reduction. What it does is take a second picture of the same length but with the shutter closed so it can map the "hot" pixels and correct the initial picture. If you don't use this you'll end up with a ton of work in PP getting rid of them. That's going to make a 30min exposure an hour wait till you see the results so if your not exactly sure on the settings it's going to really suck.
William.

Kyle, can you get me a link to that shot or some Exif data. We are going to better be able to point you in the right direction if we can see which direction you went. The composition is fine. The subject is interesting and there is some mystery to keep me looking with the boy reaching into the darkness. I want to see if we can help you get a better exposure on the shot so you can go back and do it again. It has some hot spots from the lights below the statue.

I really wish I had a faster lens for this shot.
Not sure what YOU think could have been better about the picture but IMO the aperture you used provided just the right amount of depth of field. The focus starts to fall off in the child's left hand but it extends all the way forward to the fathers right hand and I like it like that. The building in the background does detract from the photo and I can think of three things you could have tried:
Change the angle do decrease the difference in distance between the father and child - I like the angle the angle the way it is though.
Use a flash - put the camera in manual, keep the ISO high and the aperture the same and adjust the SS till the in camera meter registers -1. This will put the flash on a very low output and hopefully yield a properly exposed statue and an underexposed building in the background. Definitely need a few tries to get this right.
Do a composite - take one picture in focus and one out of focus. Use photoshop to combine the background from one and the statue from the other.
William.

^All good info. Another approach Kyle that I would consider is dropping your ISO to 100 and going on a longer exposure. The DOF is great as mentioned and a curtain flash will do some neat stuff with longer exposures. I like the shot and I doubt a faster lens would have impacted the shot in any way other than the approach you might use to get right back where you currently shot it.

Thanks.
For some reason I thought the background ruined this shot...because the child's hand went over the back of the building...
I think there is too much edit to this shot (aka eliminating the whole background)...but the lighting on the Dad's face is much better IMO.

10-13-2011, 07:49 AM
Kyle, I think my tripod was something like $20-$30.
Amazon has a bunch of them for sale. Makes life a lot easier (as you know).
http://www.amazon.com/s?ie=UTF8&x=0&ref_=nb_sb_noss&y=0&field-keywords=camera%20tripod&url=search-alias%3Daps&_encoding=UTF8&tag=zhpcom-20&linkCode=ur2&camp=1789&creative=390957
Nice work, though, without the use of a tripod. I have shot a few shots at shutter speeds below my focal length. Not something I usually do, though. And, like all generalities, people can do handholds that break the general rule and create great pictures. (Obviously at slower shutter speeds it gets more difficult -- even when you're adhering to the general rule that shutter speed should not be lower than focal length.)
Having said all that, I carry the tripod with me wherever I go. I'd hate to get blur on the shot I really want.
Your last shot looks good to me.

Seth. I think the black and white gives you the best texture, the color looks very commercial, and the cross process has a very artistic feel to it. Depending on the goal of the project, you havd 3 great choices.

Seth, I agree. When I go back to reshoot that picture (next seven days) I plan to change the framing on that picture so that I grab the statue properly. I was cramped for space.
In the meantime, I have edited to show it without the gold on top. This is, in fact, a new picture (not the previous one; slightly different colors).

Gabe, you talking about the one with all of the yellows (the pier)? I figured it might be too bright for some. I exercised some creative license with that one and turned up the vibrance and saturation while turning down the brightness a few clicks. I also used the tone curve to get some of that effect. So, we will give these shots a retry next week (or sooner if I can get down there earlier).
Thanks for the feedback, everyone. It's greatly appreciated.
Casey, I figured you wanted me to go out there on my own. When I mentioned I was going to shoot there last night (at Scripps and at the temple in La Jolla) you didn't say anything about going. Knowing how much you practice, and do it every chance you can get, I figured something was up.
Not sure about inspiration fairies and all that but I shoot almost every day. I'm not waiting for something to shoot; I'm out there shooting, hoping that I can produce something that I am pleased with.
When I go out, no matter what I am shooting, I always remember that I am practicing. I'm constantly looking for a challenging environment, too. The temple was challenging because of how white it is. It's easy to lose detail in that shot (as you know). The trade off with the temple is that I get to light it up -- and can bring out the detail -- but I have to turn the sky off at the same time. Looks as though I need a composite tutorial at this point from you. :biggrin
My goal last night was to get one picture from each location that I would be pleased with. Mission accomplished.
