we (Casey and I) both use a lithium ion battery packs called a Vagabond to power the strobes.

DW, correct. I consider myself a meat and potatoes photographer.

My personal opinion is that some photographers use tricks and effects to mask their weaknesses. I'm especially talking about photographers who use tricks and effects A LOT.

They dazzle you with things so that you don't notice their deficiencies. They often don't understand composition. They don't know how to expose properly on a consistent basis. They haven't mastered the fundamentals.

I liken them unto traveling performers who do a few specialty tricks and stunts but can't do anything beyond those few things they've mastered. Unless they're affiliated with a team that has a specialist for everything, they're doomed to fail once their audience grows bored of this particular brand of entertainer.

In photography, this might be your light painter. Or your rig-shot extraordinaire. Or your HDR guru.

Those skills are cool but what else can you do to entertain me? The good photographers aren't terminal (death coming soon). But the one-trick ponies are living on borrowed time if they have nothing more to offer.

Sorry for the rant, guys. Photographers who don't understand the fundamentals -- but hold themselves out as experts (because they've mastered a particular trick) -- irk me.

I was a clubhouse guy for the Albuquerque Dukes (now the Zephyrs)....the I was 24. Sat the bench with Orel Herchiser when he dropped down to AAA for a bit. Also....my brother in law is Mike Anaya who played for Sarasota Mets. Great stuff Solo, and good luck on making it to the show.

When I was in San Diego a few weeks ago, I visited the Point Loma lighthouse for the first time. as many times as I have lived there, I have never made it until my last trip. The view up there was awesome!

couple of shots from the Houston Dynamo/Philadelphia Union soccer match last weekend. it was my first time to go to the new BBVA Compass Stadium (the Dynamo used to play at the University of Houston football field, ugh!), and damn it was a lot of orange! lol but seriously it was also fun. and loud! the drums and chorus of fight songs never stopped the whole match! and the good guys won, 2-1, on a late penalty. good times. there really isn't a bad seat in the whole place...

The storm is just leaving. We ran rain for nearly 45 minutes coming from the north, then when we got to the top of the mountain it was just clearing. It was actually pretty cool as there was a lot of rushing water along the pathways.

I've been in Chattanooga every weekend since 6/30 except this one. I live off I24 half way between Nashville and Chattanooga so for me it's just over an hour.

There's a Coffee and Cars in Chattanooga the last Saturday of every month. Not sure if I'm going to make it this Saturday but keep it in mind and maybe we can hook up. It's an early rise for me on those mornings, it starts at 9:00 EST so that means I need to be on the road by 7:00 Central time.

John, there is nothing that screams wrong with the photo. It is nice, especially for a cell phone shot. I am not a huge fan of vertical landscape shots and while the shot is clean, its not very exciting to me. It looks nice, there just isn't much for me to focus on. Hope that makes sense.

When nothing jumps out at me, I ask the photographer what his or her subject is/was. We start there with yours, John. What was your subject in this photo? If it's just the entire scene, it's not that interesting to me.
