Seth, I agree. When I go back to reshoot that picture (next seven days) I plan to change the framing on that picture so that I grab the statue properly. I was cramped for space.
In the meantime, I have edited to show it without the gold on top. This is, in fact, a new picture (not the previous one; slightly different colors).
I appreciate your comments, sir.
The picture of the pier is frickin awesome. The Mormon Temple looks naked without the dude on top. I'm not Mormon so I'm not sure who he is but he's on top of every Mormon Temple faces towards Salt Lake City.

Thanks, guys.
My post processing is improving. My goal is to take an excellent shot straight out of the camera. I think a lot of the creativity, though, is the post processing. That's where I can have some fun.
I'm really enjoying photography. The baby pictures are coming right along.

turned up the vibrance and saturation while turning down the brightness a few clicks. I also used the tone curve to get some of that effect. I was trying to make it a little more dramatic.
You had me at hello.

William, that's why I have to reshoot it. The angel up at the top needs to be in the picture. I'll be framing the picture -- on the next one -- so that I have plenty of room up there.
Thanks for the compliment on the pier.

Here is another one of my pier shots. Thanks, John! This was taken three minutes after my previous pier picture. I also turned the f stop down two clicks. We've got more light here and I've brought more color into the picture.

William, I used the lighting that was available to me. You know those ugly orange lights we all hate? There were several of them behind me. As it got darker, the lights got brighter. I used them to light the pier for me. I invited quite a bit of it in at f/4 for 30 seconds.

Boss, to attempt combatting those sulfur lights, mainly in places like at the Star where it's all orange, I change the white balance to the little bulb symbol (I think it's called "Tungsten", it's right after auto)... then I play with shutter and aperture until I get it to where I want (I like shooting in manual mode, makes me learn what not to do real quick)

I shoot RAW, JP. So, I just allow my WB to be set in automatic. I can always fix it in post, which is how I handle it.
In that shot, I used the orange to my benefit. I like how it turned out. One of my best shots to date.

I agree, the orange is nice when you have a subject like that where more colors are nice. What I was trying to say is I shoot RAW+fine so I get 2 files, one decent size and one I can play with.
I still like to change the white balance so it looks normal to my untrained eye when I look in the screen at playback in situations where I don't want the orange overpowering the picture, such as when I was at the harbor
Marcus-SanDiego
10-14-2011, 11:03 PM
Yep. I see exactly what you're saying.
And while I could actually carry around my gray card and set WB for lighting prior to each shot -- just after composition -- I've found that the software (Lightroom in my case) is just so powerful, I don't worry about it. The technical purists out there may call me on it but I'll take my chances.
Thanks for the comment, JP. Always learning here.

One of my favorite shots from last week. Why? Because I was out having fun with friends, enjoying a Friday night in Little Italy. What makes this shot even more relevant to my interests is that I saw Casey, his wife, and my wife walking up the street. I wanted to get a snapshot of those guys. Plus, I love candids. My favorite. No one noticed me except for the eagle eye. He's too damn vigilant. The little booger even has a halo over his head.
Anyhow, threw a B&W together of these guys.

Casey, without you making that face it would have been a decent shot with some interesting things to look at. Your cheeser, though, makes it a keeper. Your face gives it just what I was looking for. Everyone else is candid. Among that sea, though, is you doing your thang. It really captures you more than anything.
You talk about pictures evoking something in the viewer. Your face, with everyone else doing their thing, does that for me.
Thanks for being my friend, pal.

Casey, was this picture taken in Little Italy when we were there? The guy in the Mercedes looks as though he's waiting for the girl -- even though she can't walk across the red light. I guess he's just staring at her. Nice capture.

Yes, it's in Little Italy. I think he was checking to make sure she didn't walk out in front of him. She is obviously a good pedestrian by standing outside of the crosswalk to indicate she has no intent of crossing at that point.

marcus I love the shot and the color is fantastic but eye is telling me something doesn't look right... or at least as good as it could.
maybe try a different crop? could be that the center of the thing is almost dead center in the frame? I like the off balance of the color vs background but maybe even weighing it more to that one side would be even better? maybe not, could just be me.

Seth, I have more pinwheel shots. I was working with limited space on this one. Could not back up a whole lot more. I do agree, though, that I would have preferred to get that pinwheel out of the center. I have a few more, though. I'll see what I can do. Also, the owner of the shop didn't mind me being there, so I may see if he'll let me move that pinwheel on my next shot. Thanks for the feedback. May get a better shot next time!
UdubBadger
10-17-2011, 07:11 AM
i don't think reshooting is needed by any means. its a fantastic shot and visually compelling. we are learning about ratios right now in school and how filling the frame with a certain ratio is visually appealing. I think by cropping off maybe 1/10th of the right of the frame might bring it into one of those ratios that is desirable looking at. just a thought was all, trying to apply my knowledge somewhere I suppose. by hacking a little off the side (maybe like 8x10 format) you'll effectively push that thing off the center of the photo and bring it more to one side.
Marcus-SanDiego
10-17-2011, 07:14 AM
No worries, Seth. I took it as you making a constructive suggestion.
Tell me what you think of this one (had to do a little crop on the left, so that we could see how it would look if I adhered to the rule of thirds -- with pinwheel center being at the third line):

yeah I like that a lot.
again, i think you can still use that other image you'd just have to crop a little. the 1st shot had a nice element of the circle inside the circle inside the circle... you kinda lose that in this one however the colors look a little cooler in this one (cool as in awesome).
Marcus-SanDiego
10-17-2011, 07:22 AM

Agree, that last one doesn't quite have the impact as the others. That's a tricky one, as I see that balance issue in the 1st ones but too centered isn't as dramatic. Very cool shot none-the-less. EDIT: Just saw the 5x7 crop, like that one.

A great fisherman does not cast his line to catch a trophy fish, he knows he will catch fish, he is skilled. Any fisherman can snag a large fish on accident, a real fisherman continues to consistently do what he knows is fundamental and through this process inevitably catches fish that are worth of hanging on the wall.

Thanks, Casey and everyone else.
I've always been about fundamentals -- in everything I learn. It's so dang important to nail down the fundamentals. Eventually I will want to do some advanced things in photography. I won't be able to do that if I have not learned the basics first.
What does that mean? It means you guys can expect to see more of the same from me for quite some time: bricks, bottles, buildings, and stairs, etc.
A year from now, maybe you'll see some advanced techniques from me. Or maybe you won't. There are just too many mundane things out in the world to shoot. I'm having too much fun with that stuff.

Yes. I had 15 minutes or so. The sun and clouds were awesome. Went up to practice the remote, and HD feature on the camera.
Light continues to kick my ass.
When I would get the sun and clouds to look how I wanted, the field was too dark....and vice versa.

Dane, I'm a new photographer too (been shooting for two months as of today). Continue to shoot in difficult situations. Continue to learn from it. It will make you better. The more you practice the better you'll get. I've intentionally shot in difficult lighting conditions. You never know when a shot may arise. You want to be prepared for it.
So, shoot, shoot, and keep shooting.

yes it is, however I was suggesting a different technique. HDR will expose highlight, midtone and shadows in a 3 or more photo bracketing set. what I was suggesting was simply taking 1 good exposure for the sky/clouds and 1 good exposure for the field and placing one on top of the other and getting the best of both worlds. It would be a similar concept but a different look in the end.

Thanks, DW. It was a single photo. No HDR techniques employed.
At this point, I'm sticking with basic stuff. Haven't tried to merge two pictures together yet. It's on my to-do list (down the road). I'm just taking basic shots and trying to work with what I have. Trying to squeeze as much as I can out of these kinds of shots.

By the way, I should mention that I am warehousing a lot of the photos I've taken to this point. I have photos that will be used for HDR down the road. Same shots but at different shutter speeds. I'm particularly interested to see how that recent water-feature photo will look like.

This picture (below) requires a little back story.
This guy, who is from India, stacks these rocks. These rocks are near the beach. He doesn't bring the rocks with him (obviously), so there are no tricks involved. It's quite amazing, really. I watched him stack some of these rocks with my own eyes. I also wanted you guys to get a feel for how he does it, so I brought him into the picture as a ghost.

ooooo, I really like this one. Bringing in the creator as a ghost it just adds to the "mystical" feeling of unnaturally stacked rocks gives. The colors are also so rich and complementary contrast (if that makes sense) each other. I think personally I'd like the "ghost" to be just a tad, and I mean tad, more visible. But I really love this picture.
Stacking rocks has become very popular here in the mountains/woods. One often comes upon a stack next to a river/stream in the middle of nowhere. I really like it, so maybe that's why this picture has touched me so much. Although, I've never stacked rocks, I enjoy the simplicity and calm the stacked rocks emanate and appreciate the skill and intricacy the act of stacking involves. But, I'll admit, I've never seen stacks that complex.

Ryan, thanks for taking the time to comment in detail.
As the viewer I appreciate your opinion and position on the ghost.
Now let me give you my thinking. The rocks are the prime focus in the picture. If I lit the rock balancer up more, it may have been too distracting. I didn't want to do that. I wanted to keep the focus on the rocks while acknowledging, slightly, the rock dude.
But it's art at that point. That's why your points and opinion are valid with me. As the viewer, you have a say in how you interpret it.
Anyhow, I just appreciate you taking the time to give me your thoughts on it in the first place.
Thanks, Ryan.

It does, that is certainly true... but on the other side of that you give up the clarity of seeing what it's holding in its hand, which I think could also be a nice part of the photo to focus in on both aesthetically and conceptually. Different stroke for different folks I guess.

There are several schools of thought on this -- as I mentioned earlier. I've seen Casey, for example, ask people for permission before taking a shot. Other times he doesn't. Maybe Casey will weigh in with his thinking on the subject.
But I appreciate the feedback. As I said earlier, this is probably one of my favorite captures (ever).

Mine too. I suggest watermarking it. I know ZHPMafia.com has a plagiarizing policy and you could easily take legal action if this picture is stolen, but it's REALLY good and captures a very popular issue and I wouldn't be surprised if I saw it floating around in other places.
PS. I really want to give the guy in the picture a hug.

Ryan, I just looked at my watch. The date is November 2. I've been taking pictures for about 70 days. Because of that, I haven't really taken a position on watermarking yet. I'm still learning so much. I've been talking with Casey about it, though. I think Casey has something in the works in regard to it.
I'm glad you like it, too.

Alright...So call me crazy old Ben Kenobi and make fun of my ancient ways and thoughts, but here we go. I believe that when you take a photo, you are taking a part of that person with you and it becomes yours. Call it a piece of their soul or whatever works for you, but you are taking a little bit of it with you. There are those that offer up a part of themselves to you, such as the case in Mark's shot. There are those who are not, and you are in a way selfishly taking from them for yourself. Mark's subject was candid and did not realize Mark was taking the shot, but a protest is a public outcry to be seen and heard. That to me, is an invitation to give the subject what they want, exposure to more people.
It really depends on the situation and the intent of your use, I often make eye contact before a shot and give people an out if am just doing street photography. The rule of thumb is always to shoot first and ask later in public, however, I take into account the context of where I am, what is happening, and what my goal for shooting is that day. Here is the best example I can give: The homeless make compelling and interesting subjects to me, but I find socially awkward to take a piece of their soul with $5,000 worth of equipment strapped to my back, especially when what I am about to take is a little piece of the only thing most of them have left in their lives.
There is something in the works. Mark continues to call himself a student, however, as I discussed with him last night, I am as big of a fan of his work as many of you are. I prefer to refer to him as a colleague or a fellow photographer. Am I still teaching him, sure. At this point could he run free and continue to do great work on his own, absolutely. Anybody who takes photography seriously should plan on being a student for the rest of their lives.
Thus, do not be alarmed to see a C Withers Media brand logo on his photos as he will be joining the team that will eventually form the C Withers Media Group. He adds a great perspective to the menu of items we want under the C Withers Media Group brand, and it is truly great to have watched him develop to where he is. Mark is not a "professional", nor do I believe he ever intends to be. I do find that he is fundamentally sound and consistently produces images that interest a sector of the market.
Here is the announcement that I made on Facebook regarding this matter:
I am now in the process of reviewing portfolios and skill sets for photographers who are part time or freelance and willing to be hired under the C Withers Media brand umbrella. Do not be alarmed if you see some non Casey Withers photos bearing the C Withers Media tag. There is a very small and select group that is already being put into place to help C Withers Media as a whole reach a larger target audience and cover more ground.
This approach suits the brand very well, much as if you were to go to McDonalds and get to choose between a Big Mac or a Quarter Pounder. Two different options on the menu, both taste great, and both are found in one location. We are still C Withers Media, we are just putting a few new items on your menu.

OK....so my deal with the above shot was this. This guy was super shy. Evertime I raised the camera in his direction....he was ducking like a prairie dog.
I loved this guys hair and beenie. That's what I was trying to capture. I figured it would be a cool shot, and would also help me learn....in the process.
So......I finally kind of caught him here, and had to take the shot, as I knew he wasn't going to go for the "hey....can you move a bit to you left" type stuff.
What I did with the color was I brought up the shadows a tad in the back.....brought the black up in his cap....and slightly tweaked the orange in his hair.
I also had to soften the his face a tad, due to complexion issues....
Really though...all the coloring aside....that's what this guy looks like. Awesome hair.

yeah its pretty unique. I would be careful in the future as you see his hair looks great, but the orange in his face and on the hat now stands out a lot and not in a good way (this is where masking in Photoshop would come in)... kinda a give some here but it takes away there type of deal.
Either way the smug look is priceless so kudos on a nice capture.

I don't know if that's a good thing or a bad thing, we just had really good light happening at the time and in post I did a little HPF to get some definition to her legs. I am pretty sure that, mixed with some black and white layering is what is making you think that.

Yep. Photographers are often secretive about their "top secret" or "cool" locations. I am not. I think it plays a very small role in the process. What good is a location if you can't knock down the shot?

Here is a before and after shot of a naturally lit photo so you can see a little bit of the transition once processed in photoshop. It's not smoke and mirrors and it validates my point that photoshop can make a good shot better, but it can't make a bad shot good.

was referring to the great tonal range and high definition/contrast in the shadows
