Emotional day for me today. 3rd generation White Sox fan. I grew up with The Big Hurt Frank Thomas but I didn't understand and appreciate baseball until I was older and Konerko was "my guy" since high school. So strange knowin you won't see your hero play again, but I made damn sure I was there to see him the last time around.
Definitely shed some tears and prayed my wife didn't notice (of course she did).

I was just browsing through the Internet this evening and came across these pictures I wanted to share with everyone... those of you who have served onboard submarines would appreciate some of these ;)
https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7490/16089151669_beb4d49bd3_z.jpg
https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7539/16087732318_b238c663c8_z.jpg
The 688 "Los Angeles" class submarines will always hold a special place in my heart. I have served onboard three of them in my 26 year Naval career (USS Baltimore SSN704, USS New York City SSN696, and USS Augusta SSN710) All three of these submarines I have sailed on are now decommissioned and stricken off the active list.
When you want to take a swim on a cruise ship all you have to do is go to one of several pools or jacuzzis. When you want to take a swim when onboard a submarine, you surface the ship, station shark watches armed with M-16 tactical assault rifles in the sail and let the crew come topside and jump off the sub...;) This was a serious morale booster for us sailors ;)

https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7555/16089401787_c99c849d5f_z.jpg
I remember doing this when I was stationed onboard USS Augusta and there was over 1500 fms (9,000 ft) of water beneath us while we were swimming around the front part of the boat. It was an amazing experience knowing just how far the bottom was!
https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7515/16275266055_9fd338dfa4_z.jpg
This view is from a middle level passageway outside crew's mess (where the crew eats and gathers for movies and training) looking into the missile compartment. Life on these boats is pure luxury compared to the 688 fast attack submarines. Lots more room here :)
And the business end where I worked when I was stationed onboard the subs...;) The Sonar Control Room, or Sonar Shack as we referred it :)
https://farm9.staticflickr.com/8673/16274445052_416a254eea_z.jpg
This is where you could hear dolphins and other sea creatures that made lots of racket underwater. This is where all the action is when you're looking for something....I was lucky to be on these boats during the cold war when there was a lot of interesting things going on.....nothing I can really talk about but it was a lot of fun :thumbsup Loved the blue lighting we used to have in our Sonar Shacks....now they are reduced grey lighting....
Something I never got to do when serving onboard subs....go to the polar ice pack and surface the boat thru the ice.... I've always wanted to do this....
https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7519/16275266035_f16a39dc2b_z.jpg
Anyway, as an retired Naval Submariner, I wanted to share this with everyone (didn't take these pictures however). I can honestly say this is a young man's game. As we get older, our bodies can't sustain the steel decks and harsh living conditions our sailors endure each and every day while they are out to sea. My hats go off to them and the hard work they all do each and every day they are out to sea! These are the true underwater warriors at play and work :)

Thanks Ry and John!
I was texting John last night about one of my most memorable moments while I was on a submarine. We were leaving Scotland on New Year's Day and as we navigated towards the North Atlantic we were smacked with 50 foot swells while on the surface. I was the Sonar Supervisor getting ready to assume the watch and had to eat lunch. If any of you have seen movies where sailors were eating in heavy seas and their food slid off the table.... it's true, this happens. I almost lost my lunch as it was sliding off the table when we took a heavy roll and had to put my arm down quick so I wouldn't lose it. Anyway after rapidly consuming my lunch, I went up to the Sonar Shack to assume my watch and looked at 5 pairs of desperate eyes once I opened the door, one of which was relieved as he knew I was relieving him. Eventually the guys in Sonar got relieved by my group and I watched each of my operators, one by one, become sea sick. It was amazing hearing the waves rush by the shack as the boat surged in and out of the seas as the the heavy swells were hitting it. Imagine a piece of cork floating on the surface of the water....that's what a submarine does while surfaced. It was like being on a roller coaster with blindfolds on... all of my operators succumbed to sea sickness and had to rush out of the Sonar shack to relieve themselves. I had a "no puking in my Sonar shack" rule so each operator had my permission to leave to do their business prior to returning to the shack with an extra trash bag, just in case. I'm a sympathy puker...;)
At the time my operators were getting sick, I was dealing with keeping the safety of ship search going while keeping my balance and hearing all of my operators puking into their trash bags. My commanding officer opened the door to my Sonar shack, looked inside, then asked me if I could keep him safe... I looked at him, and also past my Commanding Officer into the Control Room where other people were very sick, and then responded to him that if I was allowed to do what I was currently doing (reclining in one of my operator's Sonar seats while operating one of the passive consoles and making necessary reports to the Officer of the Deck) then I could keep all of us safe. He responded with "okay" and then closed the door.
Now Dane knows just what this means... it was one of the most awesome moments for me because no one was relieved of duty after the Captain saw the condition of my operators being on the floor dry heaving into their trash bags and me being the only person who was operating one of the passive consoles (Sonar Supervisors aren't supposed to operate equipment). Mind you.... I was the Sonar Supervisor on watch but since everyone was sick and I had a duty to my ship and crew to keep all of us safe, I was completely focused on the job rather than being sea sick. We were on the surface for about 12 hours so pretty much my entire watch (6 hours) was spent being on the surface. I knew we were in 50 foot swells because the Officer of the Deck reported that the wave height he observed through the periscope corresponded to 50-60 foot swells over the open microphone and I heard the report.
I suppose if I were in a fishing trawler I would be scared, but being in a Submarine that is 360 feet long, I was not scared but excited instead. Reflecting back, this would have been my "Das Boot" moment. It was moments like these and all the fun liberty ports that made life onboard Submarines memorable for me. How many people have opportunities like this? I truly felt that I was one of the lucky ones who got to travel all over the world onboard these amazing machines run by a crew with an average age of 22 years of age. This is one of many stories I have ;)

Patrick, it was not a matter of "Hey guys!!! We're going to go through 50 foot swells today!!" This was one instance where we had to go and this storm was in the way and we couldn't submerge until we owned the water space we were in. Sort of like airplanes...they aren't allowed to share the same air space due to collision issues. Same thing with submarines. We can't share the same water space due to collision issues. So we had to grin and bear it for the duration were were stuck on the surface (a 12 hour transit). I can also add that having a category 4 hurricane pass overhead is an interesting experience as well.
Anyway, it was an epic experience that I didn't have to repeat but will stay with me to the day I take the ticket to BMW heaven ;)

That's one of the main reasons we moved here: beaches and rivers... And low property taxes :)
The downside? Traffic is horrible and the drives down here are completely clueless when I comes to driving... And no Wawa!
But views like this make up for it.

where in maine did you grow up?
maine is great, spent a lot of time there as a kid. and my dad lives there now, about 10min from the beach. we've got a great beach here, very sandy (much different than maine beaches, LOL), but while it's on a huge lake... the waves are tiny and it just isn't the same.

Yeah, I had a bit of time. Not too much reaction, other than a few 'I'm watching you' looks. Somebody set off some fireworks and this one only moved a few feet. I noticed it when it was crossing the lot and followed for the 300 degree path. I missed an opportunity as it was crossing the street. Here's the storybook (in reverse order):

Totality in SC.
Damn! Was this yours? That's a great shot. Absolutely blows mine out of the water from south of Portland. ~40 seconds of totality. Was a very cool experience with the temperature dropping, the sunrise colors in 360 degrees, and the massive corona. Definitely worth the risk of terrible traffic to get into the region of totality this morning.

Yes. I rented a telephoto lens from brentrentslenses.com in Wala Wala for my Fuji X-T2. He included a filter. I played around with settings and practice for several days. I'm so glad I did and we made the 7 hour trek to SC to stay at my inlaw's. Totality was totally worth it!
I love that shot with the field!

That's a great shot Shawn! I presume you were in N Charleston?
I couldn't get a decent shot with my cell phone at totality. Our whole company closed down at 12:30. I rushed home to be with the kids. It clouded over during the event but cleared up just enough at totality. Then we got a thunderstorm 15 minutes later.
I used one of my welding helmets which turned out to be better than the glasses everyone was using

It was a bit surreal and I felt for some of them—GTO needs to be on the road...
I just stopped and asked a young man (@18?)working there if I could wander around a bit and take a few pics. He said as long as I didn’t open any doors or hoods...
I didn’t think about the tree thing... they did keep the grass pretty well cut. Evidently they do some rebuilding and sell parts to those in need...

I was walking the dogs this morning and suddenly a B-17F flew overhead quite low. Got home, looked it up on a flight tracker, and realized it was the Memphis Belle on her way to Andrews AFB. As a kid who grew up building model airplanes I definitely geeked out.

That last picture was so close to perfection. But instead, its slight off-centeredness is driving me nuts.

Ahhh...had to point that out. I think it gets better when you zoom in to focus more on the dome part and the section above. Very sharp picture. I think that's the night performance of the Sony camera?
