Uh oh, Marcus... You said you weren't going to get into photography, and now buying and looking at some pretty expensive glass... 85/1.4... Ouch. 70-200/2.8... Double-ouch.

Here's my kit:
Nikon D7000 w/grip (replaced my D300)

Nikon 16-85mm f/3.5-5.6G VR (everyday lens)
Nikon 70-300mm f/4.5-5.6G VR
Nikon 105mm f/2.8 AF-D
Nikon 50mm f/1.8G
Sigma 10-20mm f/4-5.6 EX

Nikon SB-400
Nikon SB-600

I don't shoot sports or wildlife professionally, so I don't need pro tele glass. I'd still love to have a 70-200 f/2.8... I've shot with it a few times, and it's an awesome lens... It's just too damn expensive for casual hobby use, imho. Even an older used 70-200 f/2.8 is double the price of my cheap 70-300, and the fact is that the 70-300 works great if you're not a working pro... Hell, I've shot a couple of air shows with the 70-300, and I got really, really excellent results. I'd have to use a 1.6x TC with the 70-200 to get the same reach as the 70-300, so now we're talking 4-5x the price. I'd rather put the money towards the ZHP. ;)

Steve, tell me about it. I blame Casey for introducing me to prime lenses. The 50mm f/1.4 is a beast. Now I'm spoiled with the fast glass.

And I am in love with this D7000. I think it's a steal at roughly $1200. It's a great DX camera. Very solid. Casey recommended it to me, since I am not looking to turn pro anytime soon (as in never). :biggrin

The 85/1.4 is hard to go wrong with... A little spendy, but an awesome lens with lots of creative application - I'd sure like one.

But, the 70-200... What would you mainly use it for?

Yeah, the D7000 is a lot of camera for the money. It's actually pretty amazing to me the quality of gear we all have access to at this point.

Steve, if I EVER got the 70-200 it would be for sports. Think outdoor sports, including San Diego Padres, Chargers, etc.

But I got the 55-200 because it gives me similar focal lengths without me having to spend all that money. I'm checking to see just how often I REALLY shoot that kind of stuff.

And, yep, I agree with you on the cameras we have access to. It's crazy. It's a great time to be alive. :biggrin

2x Alienbee 800
2x cybersync receivers
1x cybersync trigger

On a side note.... I see a lot of talk about the elusive 70-200 in this thread, however, I would like to say with confidence that the 80-200 rivals that lense in every way at a fraction of the cost. Better build quality, 80% of the focus speed, razor sharp, and rich colors. The high aperture capabilities of this lens are incredible and you can save a large portion of the cost, if you are willing to sacrifice 10mm on the short end of the lense.

Scott, thanks for adding that information about favorite camera forums.

I visit two sites quite a bit. They're both Nikon-centric.

http://froknowsphoto.com/

Jared Polin, who lives in PA (about 10 miles west of Trenton, NJ), is an accomplished photographer who operates a very educational and entertaining site.

http://mansurovs.com/

This is an excellent site for photographs, gear review, and education. The site is run by Lola and Nasim Mansurov. It has a very clean layout and it's a joy to navigate.

PS: FredMiranda.com (FM) has something for everyone...including a Nikon forum that is quite active...and an excellent buy + sell forum.

+1

I find that it focuses plenty fast enough on my D90. You can find them used for significantly less than either of the 70-200s, and the lens is lighter and smaller than the 70-200s. I don't have the need for VR as I use the lens with high shutter speeds for sports/daylight shooting. One thing that I will disagree is the comment about better build quality. It is indeed great, but the 70-200s have weather sealing (for what it is worth) and don't have the A/M focus ring that I have heard sometimes breaks.

Not to blow this thread up from it's original purpose... but since there are so many Nikon shooters in there, what made you guys choose Nikon over Canon (or others I suppose)? Was it those clever and witty TV spots Ashton Kutcher does for them?

Marcus-SanDiego

For me it had a lot to do with Casey living in San Diego. He is helping me learn photography. He shoots with Nikon. He vouched for Nikon. I didn't see many commercials for Canon or Nikon. I figure they're both excellent companies. Can't go wrong with either. The fact that Casey shoots Nikon was the difference for me.

I have and always will say, go with the camera that feels best in your hands. Go to a camera store and touch equipment, navigate menus, and handle the tool. This is a precision tool, if it does not "feel" good in your hands, you will be less likely to use it.

Canon EOS Rebel T2i

I only have the lens that came with it:
EF-S18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 IS

I plan on buying a nicer piece of higher quality glass, hopefully something with decent zoom. I'm starting to post process my pictures with Lightroom 3, and will move some photos up to Photoshop CS5 (have the software, don't use it yet) when I learn how to properly use PS.

Other plans include a bag (no, I don't have one!). I currently throw my camera into my backback along with my other PC-fixing tools. :(
I also want to get a traditional tripod for those shots that just can't take with only my hands...

Thats strange because when I started, Canon felt so much easier to operate than Nikon did. I won't lie that Canon's glass also swayed me a bit.

Roger’s Take: They say the main reason Santa is so jolly is because he knows where all the bad girls live. I’m so jolly because I know where all the good lenses live. I’ve been limited to shooting with this around the shop but have had my hands on it enough to make some pretty strong initial impressions (I’m not one to let a lack of knowledge keep me from having a strong opinion). This one is a home run! That’s it. Get it. Buy it or rent it, but get it.

Its autofocus is quick, its sharp corner to corner by f/2.8 and nearly so wide open. It has almost no distortion. Its flare resistant, and it has little aberration, it doesn’t have focus shift, it really is just about perfect. If you look at my review of the old Nikon 85 f/1.4 D I said that lens was badly in need of a makeover. It got it. This one is just about perfect.

It's not often that Roger get's that excited about lenses.

That is one thing I really like about Mark. He understands the value of good glass, he doesn't cut corners and he isn't trying to jump the shark with a bunch of unnecessary garbage. He is like John Stockton. Not as flashy as Magic Johnson at point guard, but so fundamentally sound that he was unstoppable. He is going to be as good at dribbling with his left as he is with his right. Definitely not terminal. Good pick up Mark. Me, well.....I'll stick to the same old crappy lenses I have been using, it ain't the shoes that make you a playa.

Thanks, Casey.

I'm lucky that you pointed me in the right direction early. Not a lot of wasted (or bad) purchases in my bag.

As for the fundamentals, that's me. There is simply no way that I can get to where I want to get without knowing the essentials. It all starts with the fundamentals. I figure when I master those, then I can start playing around with more advanced techniques.

Look at some of the photographers in this thread. I guarantee each and everyone of them got really good at the basics before they started trying crazy stuff.

I can point to William's picture of the pier. That's a thing of beauty to me. Great eye.

And Neil, man. He's knocking it out of the park with the rig shots. Bet he didn't start using a rig, though, until he was technically sound with everyday pictures.

Casey, I know about your Coke can (and how many shots of that can you've taken). Enough said.

Safe to say that I won't be shooting sky hooks and doing dunks until I learn how to shoot free throws.

Just pleased that I've got a lot of very good examples to follow right here on this forum.

yeah it easily rivals the video on my 5Dmkii only because of the 24fps mode. I don't like the crop factor on my L lenses cuz it throws me off (my nifty fifty 1.4 is now a nifty 85 1.4) but I'm sure it'll do.

Just picked up my T2i (replacing my backup 40D). Very nice... I'm excited to use it more for 24fps video!

I'm using a T2i as my primary camera while in Lima Peru...as I prefer to use a relatively low-profile, low-cost rig when traveling light and in questionable areas (from a security viewpoint). Coupled with the 50/1.2L...it's my go-to, walkaround, 'point + shoot'. I believe that the T2i,T3i, and 7D have pretty much the same sensor (of course, the sensor is only part of the entire image system)...and it's really not bad. Not quite up there with the 5D2 and 1-series bodies...but really respectable - especially considering the price point. With good technique and good glass...I'm getting some really nice results. With the 50L and taking the crop factor into effect, it's like using a 80mm focal length, which is great for portraits. I am very happy with the portraits and street shots that I'm taking. I'm also getting excellent results with the T2i on a tripod using an adapted Leica-R 28/2.8 for interior shots and stitched interior panos (I'm helping a friend with fotos of their rental apartments). No extra pano gear needed...just a ballhead that rotates.
Did I mention that the T2i/50L was a nice combo for portraits? :-) :-)
IMHO, It's almost in the same league (for casual use) as a 5D2/1DS3 coupled with an 85L.
Try it - you'll like it. Cheers,
Scott

The 24fps was added with firmware 2.03. It's up to 2.09 now so if you just bought your camera it should already be on there. If not you can DL from canon's website.

The Magic Lantern firmware is a 3rd party hacked firmware that adds very powerful video features. I know that sounds scary but it does NOT flash the firmware to the camera. It is stored on the CF card and somehow tricks the camera into loading it from there instead of the camera on startup.

Check out the focus control feature:

http://magiclantern.wikia.com/wiki/Focus

I'm uber noobie at video on the 5DII. The image quality of the video's I have taken with it are amazing but I'm just not really good at the manual focusing part.

I recently bought one of these:

and it does make it much easier.

I think it's a good decision.

For most of the photography you'll do, you make up for the lack of a >200mm by simply getting closer to your subject.

I didn't get a 200 until the need justified the purchase, which in my case was my daughter's gymnastics (distance and typically low light).

You guys got me curious so I used Exif Stats to analyze the useage of my two lenses over the last three months:

Stats for Lens...
-----------------------------------
24.0 - 70.0mm, Count: 1021
70.0 - 200.0mm, Count: 769

Stats for ISO...
-----------------------------------
100, Count: 797
200, Count: 169
400, Count: 382
800, Count: 171
1600, Count: 97
3200, Count: 173
6400, Count: 165

It gives a readout of focal lengths as well but there's too many to be useful. It would be nice if there was a tool that would group them.

There's definitely a learning curve and for a few years I just stuck to Canon's software but once I made the jump I've never looked back.

I'm now shooting exclusively in RAW and AWB and converting to DNG on import. I've also limited my camera to native ISO's; 100, 200, 400, 800, 1600, 3200, 6400 and then created default sharpening and noise reduction settings that are applied automatically on import to the different ISO's. I've tweaked them enough over time that most pictures don't get any additional PP.

I'll let you know after this weekend, I haven't had a chance to use it yet. Frankly, I'd rather have an F2 or below lens, so these big lenses don't necessarily do it for me, but Nikon glass is good so I hoping it will be fine. I really kinda view it as a stop gap, and an easy way to get those long shots of the kids activities that I hadn't been able to get.

I recently sold all my Nikons....I'm not a very big fan of Nikon shots and the way there cameras handle and the AF on majority of them is awful, plus I'm not the person to use AF in majority of pictures.

I have a Canon Rebel EOS XT 350D, that's just my play cam with the 18-55mm.

I recently bought the Canon EOS Rebel T3i 600D, I love the camera, great quality. It came with the 18-55mm.

Lenses:

EF 15mm f/2.8 Fisheye
EF 17-40mm f/4L USM
EF 28-135mm f/3.5-5.6 IS USM

I use a SunPak Tripod with the 3 beam balancers and pistol grip.

My next purchases:
Camera:

Lens:

The D5100 requires an AF-S lens. The motor is in the lens, not the body. Otherwise, you will have to manually focus.

^ was not aware. I will pick up lightroom and that 50mm lens you guys recommended above from the link Marcus. I just dont want a VR lens with my camera...I don't know why that is soooooo hard to find. I also have no idea which lens' are what and what the numbers mean. I think I need to learn more before I pull the trigger on any of the package deals. My canon rebel I used to have was easy and I had 2 lens' for it, I put one on for far away shots and the other for portrait type things...as you see I have lots of learning to do. I also have nothing but time the rest of this month :)

Since the D5100 is DX format do you think that I should get this http://astore.amazon.com/zhpcom-20/detail/B001S2PPT0 or should I get this for the FX format that I will have to manually focus? http://astore.amazon.com/zhpcom-20/detail/B001GCVA0U

Thanks for the help guys :)

*edit again* I bought the damn camera through the link and the 50mm lens, a remote. Tried to buy lightroom but the price jacks up when you add it to the cart so I will wait on that. I should have my camera Monday :)

Marcus-SanDiego
12-08-2011, 06:24 AM
Kristen, the 50mm lens has a built in motor (for focusing), so you won't have to manually focus regardless of which body you got. Ditto the 35mm lens that you provided a link for. Both are AF-S lenses.

Just remember this: your D5100 does not have an autofocus motor built into the body. That means you'll need to find lenses that have the motor instead. Otherwise, you will have to manually focus. You're looking for Nikon lenses that have the AF-S.

Regarding FX v. DX lenses, don't let that confuse you. I use the 50mm f/1.4 lens on my full frame camera. I also use the 35mm f/1.8 DX lens on my full frame camera. They both work. However, the 35mm f/1.8 lens was optimized and designed for cropped sensor cameras (like the D3100, D5100, etc.). When I use it on the full frame body, I get some vignetting, which means I end up cropping my pictures. It's not so bad when I am shooting close (and wide open), though. When I stop down, that's when the vignetting is more pronounced (stopping down means that I am making the aperture smaller).

As for the 50mm lens on your cropped sensor body, it just means that, instead of getting a 50mm angle of view when you shoot, you're getting 75mm. (That's because the crop factor is 1.5 times the focal length of the lens. Therefore, 50mm x 1.5 = 75mm.) Same goes for the 35mm lens. Your effective angle of view is 52mm (35 x 1.5 = 52mm).

In the end, both lenses work for you on your body.

Good acquisitions for you. You're going to enjoy the 50mm lens (and its ability to shoot at f/1.4).

I have a Nikon 300mm zoom lens that was originally for 35mm but works great on my 3100... I also have the the 18-55mm and the 55-200mm VR lens and two close up adapters. between all of that we should be pretty well setup... a speed light is the only other thing I can think of right now that we could use.
You should get a UV filter or something like that to protect the lens though....

I thought I read in another thread (Casey may have said it), that VR affects pic quality in some fashion...

^lol really? Good thing you said something yesterday I almost purchased from Best Buy. I have a personal vendetta for amazon. I truely don't like them, due to a christmas debacle and not getting anything on time a few years back...but that was years ago that things went south so I decided to give it another try when I bought my stuff last night.

John, I've been told by a few not to get the VR if I can help it...so I was just going with the flow. Didn't realize that with the VR lens there was an option to use it or not...good to know :)
thats funny cuz I have a personal vendetta with Best Buy...

Best Buy is also an affiliate of our site, so, Seth, you have an affiliate you get to dislike, too. I try to keep it fair around here. :biggrin

I believe I've heard that too, but I'm not sure. But, the fact that you can turn it off or on diffuses that (see, I just used a photography light term) :-)

I told her that for one.... I noticed that the picture quality with my D3100 isn't as good as it was with my D40... I blame it on the VR lens. The switch didn't make a difference in quality. Plus it seems to be a waste on a short lens where stability isn't an issue...

It's the style of "head" of a tripod. Tripod is technically just considered the legs.

What'd you go with Marcus?

Since this is the hot topic of the day, I didn't add anything to the bag but picked up a great book last week. This looks to be a great resource, having read it for the first time already.

EXACTLY what I'm now packing, as of a couple of weeks ago. Bought a factory refurb 3100 for $349, a SMOKIN' deal. Added the 35mm 1.8 lens for about $200. I may never use the kit lens, the 35mm is so versatile and awesome.

I also have a Canon S95 as my pocketable camera. Truly awesome for its size. And the camera in the iPhone 5s is always at the ready, and is pretty damn good.
