View Full Version : Attempted theft of my 2 week old ZHP :(

Well, I was going to lunch today to show my coworkers my new ZHP that I bought 2 weeks ago and I find my door lock popped off and my whole driver's door scratched up. My door lock is completely mangled and I'm seriously pissed. Any idea how much this is going to cost me? Apparently security said that earlier this morning 2 Range Rovers were stolen and a 3rd Range Rover was an attempted theft. They've had under cover cops driving around looking for these scum bags and no luck. I'm seriously debating to get LoJack. Although, I've been getting mixed reviews about this.

The black marks are from the finger printing dust the police put on.

Sorry this happened to you. I would expect a sideswipe before that.

Damn dude. I'm sorry to hear about this. You should do the complete lock cover mod that Dane did. It's a color matching cap that covers your lock. That would confuse some thieves.

Dumb ass criminals.

Regarding LoJack, here's my position. If someone steals my car, I DO NOT WANT IT BACK. Keep it. I don't want it back after it's been off roaded, revved to hell, and generally abused.

Oh man, that sucks! On the bright side, at least they didn't get it. I wonder why they couldn't. Clearly they didn't know they were messin w/Mafia.

That's some shit. Sorry to hear and see.

Here's a diagram of the door lock, link (http://realoem.com/bmw/showparts.do?model=BD51&mospid=47620&btnr=41_1354&hg=41&fg=40), for rough cost. Paint and repair will vary depending on where you get it done.

I ordered a keyless cover last night, and I have a vert, so they could easily just cut the cover to get in. Who cares, one less thing to get beat up by a would-be thief and they do look good.

This. Once a car gets into an accident, or is a theft (depending on the damage, even attempted theft), the car is tainted and I must get another car.

This frickin' blows. Insurance should cover this, no?

Not to take us off topic, but on a side note, my very first car, a BLACK Supra, was stolen in Hollywood (of all places). They found it a week or so later, completely stripped to the bone, a shell of a car. It was painful to see, as I loved that car.

PS - a little inside joke as those who know me know how I feel about BLACK cars. :)

Sorry to hear that someone is an idiot with no class.

If they were a decent thief, they would have known that an E46 is damn near impossible to drive away without a key.

I had the same thing on my driveway at home....

Luckily the damage isn't bad enough for me to warrant a comprehensive claim so I just left it as a reminder to any would be thieves that it's hard to get into a BMW door without breaking glass.

^ Sure you can...you just have to pay to play in the upper few percent and accept that as part of it's territory. :D You can either have nothing in life and never be disliked or you can take risks and enjoy the finer things in life and be disliked. That comes in all forms of economic, family, spirituality wealth. :D Someone's gotta do it! haha

Amen Brother. After it's been stolen I never want to see it again. At the same time, I'd be looking forward to being raped by the insurance adjuster as they try and tell me the car is worth $400.00.

Side note - Anyone got the 411 on the keyless cover being referenced? Where would a member find such thing?

Haha, you are giving a thief way too much credit. My truck was broken into the same way, screw driver into the key slot. I didnt bother fixing it for 2 reasons, 1. I never lock the truck in hopes they wont damage the door/glass etc to get in and 2. after the first break in, I dont leave ANYTHING in the vehicle since a lock door is not going to stop them.

Anyway, a few months later another thief didnt notice 1. the door was unlocked or 2. the lock was already messed up so they punched it out and pried the sheet metal underneath the door handle to unlock the door. Guess Einstein never bothered trying the handle first or noticing the door lock in the unlocked position. Even better, it was 2 of them working both doors, so they bent both which cost $1100 per door to fix. All for a $75 cd player in the dash and some change in the ash tray.

Around the Atlanta area, cops dont even bother making a trip to check the vehicle. This movie parking lot had 17 vehicles broken into during a Thursday afternoon, their security parking lot patrol doesnt start till 6pm and the 10 cameras all point towards the box office :rolleyes

I wanted to borrow a friends work van and sit in the parking lot behind tinted windows trying to catch them in the act and hand back some street justice!

It was at the Short Hills mall in North Jersey.

Thanks! I'm gonna order it this week. I still need to order a new locking mechanism.

Short Hills, eh?
My brother's E36 M3 was stolen there. It was found an hour later, thoroughly trashed, smoke pouring out around the hood.
