View Full Version : How wide (tires) can I go on the BMW 330 ZHP???

Im looking to possibly move to a more aggressive wheel set up... I know zhp wheels are 8 wide in the front and 8.5 in the rear. I would like to do 8.5's in the front and 9.5's in the rear. Will this be to wide or is this doable? Help would be greatly appreciated.

my car is stock height as of now but lowering springs or possibly coils would come along with a new wheel setup.

...and offsets and tires and camber. There's plenty of variables involved.

I sold that setup a couple months ago. Currently running OEM ZHP wheels with Blizzaks for the snow (though it hasn't seen any snow yet). Undecided for next year. Sadly, it may come down to a budget thing. While I'd love to splurge and get some baller wheels, I might not be able to with the way the economy is (still) going.

When I was buying my car I was already planning on getting a set of gunmetal V710's. But after having it and looking at the 135M's everyday, I don't think I would be happy going with anything else. Still thinking of powdercoating them a little darker, but I flip flop on that daily. I really like the stock wheels on this car. I don't believe I have ever felt that way about any other car I have ever owned.

Thats funny you say that Lance... I've though many time of powder coating my wheels a darker gray. I think it would look very good!

III. Now that we know the above......say I am going to go from the rim I have now.....to a stock style 135. Lets just talk about the rears.
CURRENT: Enkei's are 18X8 with an ET +42 offset.
FUTURE: Style 135's are 18X8.5 (rear) with a ET +50 offset...
IV. Plugging the above values into the calculator in II, above.....it yields the following information:
Inner Clearance: >>>>>>> 14mm's less than my Enkei's. the inside of the wheel to the strut housing.
Outer Position: >>>>>>>>Retract by 2mm's (position of the outside edge of the wheel)
***So....what the above numbers are telling me (in IV, above) are.
I may need spacers, if I do not currently have 14mm's from the edge of the wheel to my strut brace.
Additionally...my tire will still be recessed 2mm's inside of my wheel well. Not very much clearance....and if I am lowered at all....I will probably end up rubbing....which can somewhat be taken care of through the use of a stretched tire, or by adjusting my camber.

There is by "the book" and then there is reality....
I am running V713s at 19x9.5 et33 all around on an e46 chassis with 235/35/19s and rolled fenders. My car is also very low.

What changed, you said previous set up? Why did you change? What dia are those? 19 offset?

I sold those wheels & tires a couple months ago. Currently on the OEM ZHP wheels. It was just time for a change and I didn't feel like storing them for the winter.
The full specs were:
VMR V710 in Hypersilver
19x8.5 ET35 front with a 235/35/19 tire
19x9.5 ET45 rear with a 255/30/19 tire
Tires were Dunlop SP Sport Maxx
I'm still on the same suspension setup - KW V2 coilovers
Fenders are lightly rolled.

Thanks. Just add some coilovers and some spacers to your stock setup and you too can get a similar look.

Good point. I'll edit my post above. Fenders were lightly rolled to accommodate my ride height/offset/width.

+1... I once tried on a set of 17x9 +40 wearing 255/40/17 Toyo RA1s and didn't get 10 feet before the rubbing started on the right rear corner.
I run 18x8.5 +42 offset with 255/35/18 tires and some tires rub a little, others do not. My issue is up inside the rear fender well, not on the lip. Under full compression I'll get minor rubbing... like in an uphill corner on the throttle, or large dips. Casey's stretched tire is what allows him to run that setup for the same reason.
Man, I sure like the look of those V710's! I wish I had the coin for forged BBS wheels of similar design. I've warmed up to the SSR Comp-Hs, but they were not an immediate "oooh, ahhh" reaction from me when I bought them. I went with them cuz they were a great deal (used with new PS2s), light, easy to clean, and square. I miss the look of the 135s too, but not the cleaning hassle. Since getting my car new products have come out to make wheel cleaning easy though.

There will be a ton of work in the wheel well to make a 10.5 or 11 work.
Jeff, as you'll recall (back in the day), many of us had to put M5 wheel liners on our 5-series vehicles to accommodate the wider rims we were putting on our cars. Beyond a 10-inch wheel, there were actual modifications that had to be done in the wheel well, too.
On my 5 series I had to roll the fender, pull the fender out, and swap wheel liners. True, I was running an aggressive offset, but that's a lot of work just to make a 10-inch width work.
I can only imagine the kind of work necessary to make a 10.5- or 11-inch width work.

He'll just add spacers to prevent that.

I too like the look of the V710's. A set of gunmetal ones would be sick on my car. I like that you can even get them with roundels.
The problem is that I have seen a few sets of them (though not in gunmetal) around town. My 135's are much more unique it seems... Thinking I will just make these gunmetal...

I can tell you on the E46 coupe there is no such luck. I had my suspension shop "work" the inside of my rear fenders a little and all they could get was at most an additional 1/4" of clearance, which didn't really help me. It's double-wall construction at that point with very little space between the inner and outer (visible side) of the rear fender.
I may be able to reduce the drop, increase the camber, but the problem for me is so minor that it isn't worth futzing up the handling I've worked so hard to dial in. With fat new tires on (Dunlop Star Spec or similar) it will rub for a little while until the fender modifies the tire. :-) Free!!
With the PS2 and the RE11, no rubbing at all. Their shoulders are more rounded. I had BFG KDW2's on there once, huge meats, lots of rubbing.
What's good about the 135's, and something I miss, is that they look like 19's because of how they're shaped.

Yeah, I will be hard pressed to ever change out these wheels since they are unique to this package.
