View Full Version : Ate a Pheasant

While running down US12 near Mobridge SD, a pheasant caught her last ride with me. In the process, she got jammed inside the MTech2 and it took about 20 minutes to remove, first the head, then one leg, another leg, etc...

My question comes around the parts in there. I have a need for the grid (51117893331) but I noticed there is another large plastic part in there that has 3 or 4 vertical holders that were broken behind the grid. Looking at the OEM diagrams for front bumper and bodywork, I've not been able to locate the part.

Does anyone have ideas on what OEM diagram or part numbers for the bits behind the plastic grid?

Check out realoem.com would be my only advice.

Yup, I've been fishing through the diagrams on real oem and have not found the assembly behind the grid.

If you have full coverage, I'd let insurance deal with it. Hitting an animal isn't going to raise your rates.

Thanks Eli, I didn't even think of that. I'm always trying to DIY ;)

Still gotta pay deductible, correct?

And this warning: if the damage isn't that hefty, I likely wouldn't go through my insurance. The last thing I want is my insurance company reporting this as a wreck on Carfax or Autocheck. For a bird in the grille? No. That would suck to have that kind of accident reported.

Just something to think about. Always looking out for my Mafia mates.

Yes but if there's bumper damage, that can get expensive real fast.

True on the deductible, 250 in this case. I can likely DIY for less on the parts, which gets back to my original question. If nothing else, I can take it apart and figure what that loose plastic piece is behind the lower grid.

Not seeing the bumper damage. I am sure lower grill is trashed...but that's easy diy. Get the clay bar out = done.

Bumper cover is fine other than the existing wear. Just the mesh grid ~$50 and some yet to be determined part behind it. Thanks for the advices.

This happened last week during the start of a 3000+ mile journey including drive out to Montana, up to Glacier National Park, down to Yellowstone and the Beartooth Highway - one of the best drives of a number of awesome roads. The route I took: http://g.co/maps/znfm with some short drives out of Bozeman including Friday evening at Gallatin Speedway (Dirt Oval) to watch the Sprint Cars. ZHP stayed in the parking lot ;)

Image from 2 miles up on the pass on top of Beartooth Highway.

I like pheasant... but I think there are better ways to cook it than with your radiator. :biggrin Glacier National Park was nice... there about 17 years ago - recommend to all.

Do you have pictures of the part?

I'm assuming the part you are referring to isn't p/n 4:

http://www.realoem.com/bmw/diagrams/c/x/136.png

Then I was thinking radiator mounting bracket... but I didn't see any vertical holders in the diagram...

Then I saw this... but am assuming these body pieces (p/n 5) aren't plastic:

Maybe part of the air duct (p/n 2)?

1. Turn oven on to 375
2. Defeather bird, nevermind looks like your half way there already, so just finish pulling the leftover feathers off
3. Cut off the neck and get out all the gibblets, neck and internals
4. Using a mixture of soft butter, combine sea salt, coarse ground black pepper and some fresh finely chopped rosemary; rub this all over the bird on the outside and inside cavity.
5. Stuff bird with chopped onion, julienned various squash (yellow and green are best), carrots with some of the left over butter mixture above.
6. Tie off the legs with cooking twine
7. Place bird in roasting pan with quartered red potatoes and left over veggies on the bottom
8. Tent bird with tinfoil and roast for 35-45 minutes or until juices run clear when poked. If you want a crispier skin, take off tent and resume cooking for another 10 minutes under your oven's "broil" mode.
9. Enjoy roast pheasant with veggies. Make sure to enjoy meal in front of other birds to show them what happens to them when they cross your path.

As for the car damage..... insurance?

Oh... I'm sure there might be moar to this, but I saw my mother-in-law's boyfriend doing this after we got a few pheasants two seasons ago.

1) Break apart leftover carcass and bones.
2) Simmer in pot of water overnight to desired strength.
3) Enjoy delicious pheasant stock in other culinary dishes.

You definitely hit the nail on the head with this. The best stock comes from the previous days bird

Every year that the wife and I are responsible for thanksgiving, no one is allowed to take the remaining turkey carcass home with them. I get to keep it and the next day I put it in my lobster pot and boil it down with a bunch of fresh herbs, carrots and celery and make turkey and wild rice soup from it. Best soup you can find. Love it!

Yay! And I was worried I was just shotgunning it. :shift So I wish I would've provided the links or wrote some stuff down - took me a second to find it again. It was buried.

I spent a couple hours digging around for this. The P/N 21 in that image is what I referred to as vertical holders, they are currently connected to air. Thanks so much. :thumbup

I cannot recommend the Beartooth Highway enough, especially on new supersports. I drove out there in April of 2010 and it was closed. I did however get to drive up to it on Chief Joseph Highway just NW of Cody - another amazing road. I was on my winter tires and had to turn around after the snow got too deep.

Seems I don't believe those road closed signs often. This trip on the way out on US 12, there was a road closed sign that was rather vague, so we drove to the end and discovered the road was under water. The fun was driving back from that point on a totally empty perfect highway - gave me a chance to get up to speed for a bit.

Yikes! This one was hit at about 70 but much smaller.

Similar event - my wife was riding in an M6 vert last summer going 140 (outside USA) when the mirror caught a bird and splattered all over. It's hard to impress her with my story, haha.

Very cool! I'm actually just over the St Croix river on the WI side up near Taylor's Falls. You should come to one of the monthly Cars & Coffee events we do in Chanhassen. Typically 400 to 600 cars and 1,000 to 2,000 people show up. Check the Regionals section here for details.

As you found out, there are A LOT of pheasant in this area. During hunting season people fly in here from all over the country to hunt prairie chickens. When I travel between here (Bismarck) and the Black Hills my horn gets a good workout trying to clear all the various birds on the highway before I hit them. I pulled a small Swallow or something out from behind my kidneys last time I got home, didn't even know I hit it. Lucky it didn't break the grille.

I agree, Beartooth and Chief Joseph Hwys are awesome drives and not too crowded. I was out there last year and had a blast. Yellowstone was nice to see again but way too crowded for me. One of these days I will have to make it to Glacier, before they are all gone.

Beartooth......

You should have went a little farther south and hit the Black Hills, lots of perfect BMW roads there too.
