So i am thinking about putting a subwoofer in the car (aftermarket). i have some questions.
does anyone have one in their car?
how hard is it to get it to work with the OEM unit?
did you do it yourself?
what set-up are you running if you do have a subwoofer or did have a subwoofer?
thank you guys and gals!

Sorry buddy. I haven't gotten back into car audio after selling my Cavalier (Eclipse Point Source speakers all around and matched Eclipse amp) and getting married.
If I was to get back into it, I'd probably go with something clean... plug and play. Like the semi pricey BSW.

The BSW is a nice system but SOOOO expensive.
Here is what I did:
10" Shallow Mount Subwoofer: $64
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0036MQWN8
10" Shallow Mount Sealed Enclosure: $40
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B003GSLDOA
Kenwood 8105 Amp: $125
http://www.amazon.com/Kenwood-Kac-8105D-1000-Watt-Class-Amplifier/dp/B0038FHHHS/ref=pd_sim_e_2
1. Remove rear window deck subs from trunk
2. Wire up amp (I rewired it using a heavier thicker gauge positive and negative cable from the trunk). Use existing source (sound) that goes to the subs already from the HK or non-HK amp.
3. Bolt up sub box and amp up under rear window deck. Identical to the BSW unit that Bill mentioned above.
4. ????
5. Success
BSW : $700
Bullfrog : $230 (give or take a few bucks for an amp kit or extra wiring if you need it)

Hey guys,
My stock 6x9's in the sub box mounted in the trunk are blown. I would like to just replace the speakers instead of a complete retrofit. Where can I get these? They are 2ohm speakers correct? Crutchfield has two sets they say will fit "shallow depth" but I don't think they are 2 ohm's. If there not won't it burn up the amp?

Check over on e46fanatics for a set. People are selling these all the time when they upgrade. Just get a set from there or a junkyard

Hi Gary!
My primary background is not electrical... so I can't comment directly on the 2 ohm v 4 ohm thing. With my other setups, I was completely rewiring system and did not have to interface with a stock amplifier or head unit.

That would be alot easier for me also. I've done many stereo installs back in my high school days. Thanks...

Nice, I just might do this!
Not to thread jack or anything, but has anyone upgraded the h/k speakers with something other than BSW?

yeah this is something i am wondering also, but at the same time i'm really happy with the sound of H/K just like a little more "umpfh" when i turn it up. i would do BSW but yeah i would really want to hear it first.

I have upgraded to Alpine's in the front and rear deck. Still didn't sound "right" with the stock amp. So logically i redid the entire sound system minus wiring and headunit. Sooooo here is the current setup:
Speakers:
Alpine Type-R 6.5" Components with BSW Midranges
Amp retorfit:
JL Audio 300/4
Mixer:
AudioControl LC6i
Sub:
10" Shallow mount Kicker
Kenwood 8105 amp
Don't take this lightly, as it is not an easy job. I had to completely gut the driver side trunk area, including cutting out the stock HK amp. Also, 6.5" Alpines require (GASP!!!) cutting of the door sheetmetal to fit, not for the faint of heart. After many hours and headaches, I can honestly say it sounds 100x better. Some songs sound to bright and others too dark, so some fine tuning is still needed but I need an audio pro to do that for me, since I don't know how to tweak the amp and LC6i properly.
I'll snap a few pics this weekend when I get home from the business trip.
