Very nice Trevor. I am getting about 380 miles on a tank. Mileage went up with AFE....but came down a bit with Shark. OBC states 24.0mpg....I was getting around 25mpg before....

city roads and ~800ft climb to my house = garbage mileage. hopefully the vanos repair kit and CAI coming in the mail will help a little...

I refilled earlier today.

OBC said 19.9 mpg, 30.1 mph.
Actually calculated at 19.4 mpg (307.2 miles / 15.814 gal)

Just filled up after a week of my 43 mile (each way) commute to work. OBC said 31.2 mpg on 482 miles. Actual mpg was around 30.9 (482 mi on 15.6 gals).

I really babied the car this week and the mpgs showed it!

Fuelly is reporting 26.8mpg average (city and highway) for me (see sig). This is over the course of 130 fill-ups; I'm floored by what this car can do, despite the days that I feel "spirited" driving would be in order. Been keeping track since last year, about 5k miles after I got the car.

This car never ceases to amaze me.

I've been averaging 27 to 28 in mixed city/hwy driving to/from work etc. Amazing to me as its maybe 1mpg worse than my previous E46, a 325 with M5 trans. The ZHP is just a wonderful thing in so many ways.

I dont tend to use the ZHP on trips as we use the wifes Jetta or truck pending load etc. so I have no idea what it will do on extended highway.

Of course even better deal is flying the RV8, I get over 200mph and 20-26mpg pending winds......and direct. Nothing like taking only 1.5 hours between San Jose and Orange county........ :-)

I found 91 octane gas for $3.45 the other day which is the lowest I have seen in a while. The amazing part is I reset my trip odometer at the gas station and then took a picture when I pulled in my garage.

I had a spirited entry onto the freeway and then hunkered down at 70 mph with cruise control on until I got off the freeway. Then I drove the two miles or so to my house. Here are the results:

I am getting about 18 mpg. My commute to work is less than 4 miles round trip so my engine runs cold most of the time. I get between 250-310 miles/tank and I fill up about every 2-3 weeks. I attached a gas log going to April of 2010. I might have posted it in a different thread by I don't remember. My car is automatic and is stock except for the Dinan intake. If I had to guess, 20-40% highway and 60-80% city driving.

I took a 35 mile trip one time and I reset the gas mileage indicator in the car and I got 29 mpg (according to the vehicle computer). The trip was almost all highway ~95%, it was late in the evening and no traffic, 65-75 mph, 2 passengers (~300 lbs combined). The cold engine is what I think saps the mpg. I'm not too worried about my mpg due to not driving much and not filling up often.

Currently 113,500. Hundreds of miles in just 5 days. 95% pleasure. :)

It should stop getting called highway miles (most of the time that's not accurate) and instead be called pleasure miles...

20.3 on this tank, all in the city. But I do have a habit of lightly tapping the throttle at red lights to listen to the exhaust from time to time. It makes the wait for the green light more enjoyable.

I usually get around 11.5L/100km (20.45MPG) in the mix of highway and city driving.

Best mileage I've ever had was 8.5L/100km (27.67MPG), but that was babying it on highways and remote roads.

Worst I've ever seen was about 15L/100km (15.68MPG), when towing two sport bikes, buddy + tons of gear in the car.

That sounds pretty amazing to me. My best weeks are 75% highway miles and get me 22 MPG. My worst weeks are 75% hilly surface streets and get me 18 MPG. This doesn't count long trips that are all highway or track or AutoX days. If I just drive on the highway with the roof rack and 250 lbs of tires/tools/fluids, I get from 24-28 MPG averaging 70-75MPH. If I drive only on the track with the car empty, I get 11-12 MPG.

Typically I get between 23-26 per tank, driving 75/25 city/highway.

Actually, those numbers sound right if he's got a relatively lead foot. On the days that I don't care, I get similar numbers in each of those scenarios. Actually, those numbers are dead on to each scenario on my "I don't care" days.

I'm in hypermiling mode at the moment. Getting ~24 or so with about 50/50 city/highway.

Damn! 79.6? Was that 406 miles non stop? You'd have to be going at least 85 to get that average with more than one or two quick stops. And the 28.4 is great for that speed.

Wow who's having more fun? The driver or the instructor!? :P

LivesNearCostco
12-20-2011, 04:45 PM
Good question! I'm having fun but am also a bit tense, with a "death grip" on the steering wheel. Really fast drivers are smooth and relaxed, and/or have forced induction! Since that video (in September) I've learned to relax my grip on the steering wheel but need to relax more--and look ahead more--to go faster. That particular instructor (BMW CCA instructor but Porsche driver) was friendly and mellow but I couldn't tell if he was having fun or not. I think some really do have fun in the passenger seat and others do it just for the free track time. So Cal CCA also pays for the instructors' hotel rooms and some meals.

Rovert
12-20-2011, 05:28 PM
I remember on the small track here where I live...I got 8MPG for the day! :D I was either on the brakes, or the throttle, or squeezing out and back into the other. I saw the death grip..LOL The gloves exaggerated it even more. Haha....awesome. Better have the death grip there and screw up without hitting anything than death grip it on the public road. Just let the lines come to you and stop thinking so hard about them and feel it. My instructor could give me in car lessons until the cows came home during track day but if he didn't leave me alone and let me figure it out after learning the basics, I'd still be all up tight. Once you feel your car and the corners, your feet will do the dancing for you and you just have to steer. Fast lines will quickly follow so don't worry about a Corolla S snagging you in a corner. LOL Keep up those insane MPGs people!

I find when my windshield washer fluid is low, the engine senses it and uses more fuel so the car moves faster to keep the windshield free of debris. Faster you go, the better things bounce off or if it splats, the wind will blow it off.

Cruise is the devil for gas mileage! Flat roads though?
There were plenty of hills on my trip back. Kind of annoying how you can't go more than a mile or so without hitting some kind of incline here in the Northeast. :(

I also have never done better than 28mpg on the freeway, averaging 75mph. Just finished tallying my average mileage for all of 2011.
2010: 13,959 miles, 622.8 US gallons, 6 track days, 22.4 mpg
2011: 8,269 miles, 407.5 US gallons, 8 track days, 20.3 mpg

2010 had fewer track/AutoX days and more long freeway trips, while 2011 had more short trips on hilly streets. Just installed Shark Injector 2 weeks ago so we'll see how that affects mileage.

When I drive hard i get 430 miles to the tank.

When my lower boot tore I got 390-400 or so miles per tank and the codes.

They made it so the automatics performed just as well as the manual version, Heat is a factor in automatics so they added tranny cooling and rear end cooling as well.
The finned rear end is a plus, now only if they didn't have hollow axle stubs.

However, this is also through the WV and VA mountains for the last 3 hours of the trip. I also did some 0-80mph full throttle pulls out of each of the 4 toll booths haha. Didn't get to see how many total miles I would get per tank but this is right at 1/2 tank. I think it's very good mileage for the trip.

Better mileage is using the brakes as little as you can. Quit using the brakes and you'll triple or quadruple your fuel economy. Maybe get quicker lap times too. LOL. Good luck on turn 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7...oh wait..you won't make it past turn 1 using that method of fuel savings.

Umm.. lots of mountains & feathering the gas. Kept it about 70-80 as well.

I also put some more air in my tires. I researched a bit last night and today I filled my fronts to 36 and my rears to 38.. from 33 all around.

Yeah, I DEFINITELY felt less rolling resistance with more air (duh) but I never really thought about checking my air in my tires. The weather was nice today too, 60+ degrees and windy. Probably helped my intake a bit. My front driver side was about 29psi and the less rolling resistance and it was even noticeably more 'at home' going off this circle off ramp near home.

I'm only like 6'0" 145-150 lbs so my sports seats don't really hold me that well. I usually have to have a foot planted to counteract the forces upon me in tight corners. But this time I felt like my eyes are gonna pop out of my head :P

On this last tank, I had done probably about 70% highway miles, and a lot of hard accelerations. Most of the highway miles were at 80-85mph (was following someone, otherwise i'd never go that fast) which is horrible for mileage. On this last tank, I had done probably about 70% highway miles, and a lot of hard accelerations. Most of the highway miles were at 80-85mph (was following someone, otherwise i'd never go that fast) which is horrible for mileage. Returned 29mpg avg, 418 miles on the trip odometer when I filled up. Gas light not on yet.

I get roughly 30 mpg in pure highway driving @ 65-70 mph.

Normal highway driving is 28 mpg.

My tank average is ~20 mpg due to short commute to work; less than 3 miles round trip and not much highway miles.

And this is what I get from my commute to and from work.

Who said they were getting 38mpg? Did I miss that? Regardless, getting 30+ isn't hard if you're up to date on maintenance, have a manual transmission, and employ a couple basic hypermiling techniques.

Very likely an auto vs. manual issue. Stickshifts can pull all sorts of nifty tricks like puttering around in 6th at 25mph that you just can't trick an auto into doing...

nike001's shots must've been taken off a fresh fillup and straight onto the highway. Nice numbers indeed!

This is all city driving but no rush hour jam. Usually on highway I average 34.

I can usually get about 400 miles from a full tank. Thats usually before the light comes on, as I usually fill it before then. I often like to let it get low to constantly have fresh fuel in the car. When in winter storage fuel stabilizer is added as well.

I'd say I drive 75% highway, the rest city and long back roads (Maine)

As far as I know yes.

My ZHP consistantly got 22.9. After the diff and tranny oil change 24.2. Nothing else was done to the car. I really didn't think it would make a difference. Could it be the winter fuel? Either way I'm happy to see it go up.

I think the mere fact that you change the old diff fluid would raise your mpg's, less resistance in the gears allowing for more efficient power down to the ground. Tranny was prob just a little extra on top

I wonder if maybe I get a little better mileage due to not having the hotter cams and tune that comes with the zhp package? Plus just having 5 gears when im cruising at around 70 the rpms are slightly higher but is right in the torque band so get maximum fuel use for that speed. :dunno

Then again could be trying to make my "non-special" 330 better than the special zhp's ;)

I was VERY impressed with that engine. It was quick, had some serious balls.
30mpg was EASILY attainable.

Stock final gearing for a five speed is 2.93, not 3.91.

Still averaging 0 mpg...car hasn't been driven for over 6 weeks.

Sounds like my zhp now. It gets pushed out of the driveway to get washed. Loll.

Prius is getting 56mpg while the BMW is averaging 24mpg

Personal best for my 60-mile round-trip highway work commute: cruise set @ 60 MPH (vs 70 MPH speed limit).

P.O. was getting 27.1 from NC to MD all the time.

I'm getting 26.4 from Fredericksburg to Quantico (35 miles one way).

I got a little too happy with the right foot on this last tank - only averaged 42 mpg. Previous tank was 46 mpg.

Considering I have a 3.62 rear end, this is pretty fine with me.

BP, Charlie should look at this :)
