Sounds like you're firm at $22K. If that's your price, that's your price. Hold firm. You may end up with principles and no car but at least you'll still have your principles. I can live with that.

In the grand scheme of things $500 is not much. I guess it's the principle. The dealer claims to have paid 20.5k on the trade-in. We all know that is bogus. I also must have the silver cube trim and will pick up a set at Tischer BMW for around $500 if I go for this car. If it is like the two other e46's I have had owned it will need new vanos seals and a rattle kit... factor another $450.
Coupe trim is going to run you upwards of $900 at Tischer.

Damn. I thought I read on here that trim could be had for around $500. Maybe a silver carbon fiber wrap will be a better option. I'm just not digging the all black. Too monotone. I wonder what the interest on the forum would be in trading silver for my black cube. I have the standard, plasticky aluminum trim in my 2001 330ci and could have it wrapped and hold onto the black cube for resale.

From a few posts ago, I got to drive the white coupe that is being offered by a local dealer. Again, it's a 2006, 6mt with 62k miles. Dealer is asking $22,600.
It's in nice condition - not perfect, but very nice (there's a couple scrapes at the bottom of the front bumper lip, the tint on one of the windows should be replaced, but it has a clear bra, so no chips on the front, no dings or dents to speak of; interior is in nice condition other than some normal wear on the driver's seat bolster and on the shift knob).
It drove well too - nothing interesting noted (in a good way).
I got the history on it from a BMW salesperson I know, and found that it had been CPO'd, so it has that CPO warranty through Feb 2012. Not a ton of time, but at least there's some coverage for the first several months if I were to buy it.
It's new on their lot, so it doesn't seem they are budging much from their pricing at this point - claim to have $21k into it. I made it clear I was very interested, but that I thought the price was a bit high. We'll see if I hear from them.
Thanks for all the helpful advice!

Why do people say that the East Cost demands a premium over the West Coast for pricing of bmws and/or zhps? Just Curious from the Bay Area here.

East coast zhps are typically $1500 to $2000 higher.

Just how things happened, more zhps sold an locate on west coast thus more supply yet same demand so price is assumed to be lower. What you can do is buy a crap ton of zhps and then move them all to the east coast and hopefully that'll lower prices for other buyers :)

I need to add some window regulator notes to the document linked above, or maybe more appropriately to one of the other docs linked within.
If you hear popping sounds coming from a window while it's going up or down, plan on replacing a regulator. It's quite easy to DIY in warm weather, when the adhesive on the inner door panel moisture barrier is pliable.

I think i might have to pass on this car, unless they come down on their asking price. I was disappointed on the condition of the car, mostly the exterior..especially for a being a 1-owner. This car was def. not a garage queen and was daily driven in chicago lol :biggrin
lets see where to start, i emailed the used car manager before going there just to make sure its still available, and i got the usual "just so you know we are fixed priced used car facility before you drive out here" BS :facepalm
the car had soooooo...many scratches all over..maybe 15-20, plus a medium size dent on the driver side door, the sale guy response " well its an 2004" yeah i would expect some scratches but not 15+ ...im sure a professional detail guy can get them out with a paint correction detail $200-300, not sure about the dent. Found no sign of body work or paint work, tires are in good shape, but they are all different brands lol and maybe diff sizes. Brakes might need replacing, or the car has just been sitting there for a while, my PPI tech would know for sure. The engine is strong, and pulled hard..which made me miss my E36 M3 6sp and also made wish this ZHP was manual :biggrin windows, moonroof, stereo,ac looked to be working fine...the handle on the interior ac vents were broken, shifter fake CF trim surround was HEAVILY SCRATCHED, like some one keyed the crap out of it. I also noticed that the car was leaking (?) water, which i think might be normal during summer ? does the cooling system flush water out ? found leafs, twigs, and a spider in drainage gutters around the trunk seal...i would think a dealer would detail the crap out of a car before putting it up for sale. Im very interested to see what the undercarriage looks like, all in all the car is not that bad if they would just come down on the price.

I dunno if this is the best place for a few questions. I noticed there are interior seats that are in leather and some in cloth. I am more interested on what is the wear and tear of the cloth? Which parts of the seats are cloth? Do they wrinkle? Comfort? Are they worth it? They are lighter than leather but if a ZHP is offered in cloth, wouldn't the price be lower? Are there leather seats readily available on the used market if one is to replace the seats from cloth to leather?
Also, what are the usual price ranges window for an '03, '04 & '05? Car in good condition. No accidents, clean title & 6 spd.(Does that matter?) Thanks.

OK, what do you guys think of this one:
http://fortsmith.craigslist.org/cto/2526944954.html
http://www.zhpmafia.com/forums/showthread.php?3151-For-Sale-2003-BMW-330-ZHP-sedan-on-craiglist
It's been listed for at least a couple of months now, and I keep coming back to it for the following reasons:
1) In my price range
2) Easily accessible (cheap flight and <8-hour drive from home)
3) Low miles - great for me because this will be a daily driver
4) It's had work done, it's not perfect - great because this will be a daily driver and I won't have to worry about it like I might a nicer car.
I've mentioned this in a few other threads, but I'd almost prefer a car that isn't perfect cosmetically, because I wouldn't feel bad about driving it. It's going to see snow, sand, salt, etc. I'd almost rather not start with too nice of a car...
So, balance the low miles and the fact that it has a salvage title... Let's assume the seller is honest and that the damage really was only cosmetic, no airbag deployment, and he can provide a photo of the damage as he claims... Then, let's assume I'm going to drive this car for 5 years/50k miles to about 95k and then sell it...
A) What you want to pay for this car, and B) What do you think you could realistically buy the car for (put yourself in the seller's shoes).
KBB private party excellent is almost $17k, good is $16,250... He's asking $14,900, but says the price is negotiable. I have a number in mind that I'd be pretty comfortable with given the previously-mentioned assumptions were true, but I'm curious what you guys think.
Thanks, guys!!!

Steve, the ad is not available on craigs.
Still, my opinion won't change even if I know the mileage. This is an 8-year old car with a salvage title. I would only buy a salvage title if I was never going to sell it again.
I'm going to guess that the mileage is around 30k? For that price, it better be.
As you can tell, I have a real aversion to salvage cars.

what's everyone's take on talking to a seller on the phone instead of emailing them? I've always found that the more serious buyers call(if available) and tire kickers tend to email. However with this day and age, maybe email is the new norm for communication.

Benefits of emails in my opinion:
- everything is on record
- helps focus getting answers to buyer's specific queries, especially on maintenance.
However, a call is always nice because you get to speak to the person and know them better, which in turn may throw useful insight into how the car was maintained under his/her care.
So, my preference: email to screen, call later if interested.

You must have clicked the link in the old post, Boss... Try the craigslist link I posted:
http://fortsmith.craigslist.org/cto/2526944954.html
Mileage is 43,500 - nearly half what most of the cars in my price range have.
Yeah, I know your aversion to salvage cars, and ordinarily I agree... But, damn... I could easily see how with all the labor and parts, a side-swipe (front and rear fenders, two door skins, some trim, door handles, two wheels) could end up being a total. But, if repaired well, it could still make a hell of a nice daily driver. If I could be relatively certain the damage was cosmetic, buy the car right and leave room so I could sell the same way, in theory I can drive a ZHP with similar TCO as any other, but with less money up front.
Given all that, if you saw documentation that the damage was indeed just cosmetic, and the AutoCheck jibed with the seller's story, the car passed a PPI, and you were comfortable with it, what would you pay? Give me your honest answer, and I'll add a little back in to compensate on your particular bearishness toward salvage titles.
Thanks!

Ditto to the two-phased approach. I like to get some of the basics out of the way and find out if I'm seriously interested via email. That way, I also find out if they're capable of returning an email in a timely, professional, literate manner that way, which I feel is probably also indicative of how they take care of their stuff. Once I'm satisfied with the basics, then I go to the phone. Like Marcus said, I can get some good intel listening to a voice that I just can't get from an email.

Steve, a lot of my reticence comes from not wanting to deal with the sale on the other end. That's why, if I think I will sell it, I will want a fat discount on the front end (so I don't lose my ass on the sale).
I've never bought a salvage vehicle. It's just one of those things I've decided I'm not going to do. That's why I have to speak in hypotheticals.
I would take into consideration all of those things you've mentioned, though. If I knew that the car was in good physical and mechanical shape, and I knew I was planning on keeping the car until it dies, that would make me feel comfortable.
I just can't get from A to B, though.

Gotcha.
Here's my rationale, and I'm just thinking out loud... Assuming things check out, and assuming the seller is shooting for the stars with the price but is willing to take significantly less... Let's say I can buy it for $12,500 and drive it for 3 years. I'd only have to get $7k out of the car to make $150/mo depreciation, which would make me pretty happy.

how about this one? seems significantly overpriced to me, even with the inclusion of the winter wheels/tires. i'm not paying any "east coast premium" nonsense. which ever one i buy i will have to ship or buy a plane ticket and drive back, so i'll happy save a couple grand and ship one from california where they don't have any snow/salt instead of the east coast.
seems like a ~50k mile car should sell for $18, knock off say $750 for the mods and it's a $17-$17.5k car no?
Marcus-SanDiego
08-09-2011, 08:45 AM
We've discussed that car here: http://www.zhpmafia.com/forums/showthread.php?4152-For-Sale-2006-BMW-330ci-ZHP-w-6sp-Blk-Alcantara-23000-%28Alexandria-VA%29
Note that we were weighing in on price before the owner of the car became a member of our site. You can see my take on the price in that thread. And, as much as we may not like it, the east-coast cars do get a premium (likely because of supply and demand). If someone is looking to avoid paying a premium, shop for cars in other areas of the country. The owners of the east-coast cars seem to understand that they can get more for their cars than we can on the west coast. They tend to hold firm(er) on their prices.

this is a tough one......the listed price and miles seem reasonable, but then you have to factor in a discount for the modifications. and if you look real closely at the interior it looks like it has a few knicks in it. this one might be my leading candidate right now....anybody out in the area?
Marcus-SanDiego

It is priced right. In fact, the guys in the Bay Area tend to price cars a little higher, so this is priced to move.
Now, about those mods. The CSL rep trunk doesn't fit perfectly. There is a picture that demonstrates that nicely. Second, whenever I see someone swap out a trunk, I make sure that there was no accident. Be sure to check the areas around the trunk for paint work (not the trunk itself; surrounding areas). Also check to see if the guy has the stock wheels. Bonus if he does.

thanks for the info on the decklid, that's for sure a negative in my book. same with the wheels/tires; 225s all around seem like a cost-cutting measure that might represent shortcuts taken elsewhere.
on the face of it, it seems like a decent deal, but i'd want the OEM wheels and decklid.

This just popped up:
http://novascotia.kijiji.ca/c-cars-vehicles-cars-trucks-2003-5-BMW-3-Series-330i-ZHP-Sedan-W0QQAdIdZ305228511
2003.5 ZHP with alcantara, 114k miles, no rust, 15900 (Canadian dollars). ZHPs are incredibly rare in Nova scotia, and a rust-free one even more so. Also has complete maintenance history that I looked at.
I have actually gone and looked at it - drives great and doesn't have any vanos rattle or alignment issues at speed. There is just one issue - the hood is rockchipped pretty badly. It would definitely need to be redone and probably blended into the fenders. Considering the relative rarity of the car in this area, I'm thinking 14500-15000.
Marcus-SanDiego
08-13-2011, 08:29 AM
I imagine these are really, extremely, rare in your area. I can see why you would have to pay a big premium for one (especially a clean one). Obviously, most of us would consider $14500-$15000 expensive here but I bet that's competitive where you are. I am not familiar with the Canadian market for US cars.
Have you run across many ZAMs (those are the Canadian equivalent of the US ZHP (http://www.zhpmafia.com/forums/showthread.php?1789-Frequently-Asked-Questions-%28FAQ%29-About-the-BMW-E46-330-ZHP-Performance-Package-Option)) in your search?
I wish I could be more help here. But I don't want to speak out of school. I have no idea if that's a good price in Canada.

I wouldn't go much more than $18k for it, based on mileage. A little less mileage...and an 06....maybe that price.

I'd say $18,500. Also, this is a single-owner car. I tend to give a little premium for that when I try and figure out prices.
By the way, this guy has ordered a 2011 M3. He is selling because he can't keep both cars. Trust me, this price is not firm. He will become more flexible as that M3 gets closer to NY.
I'd pay as much as $18,500 for it. I would offer $18K.

Also, I found this other one w/ less miles, around the same asking price. If it the PPI checks out would $17.5K - $18K be a good range?

That's fairly priced now, so if you can get it down, you'd be great. It's a 2006, on the east coast, 6 MT, with less than 60,000 miles on it. I'd be really surprised if you got it down to $17,500. I could see $18,500.

Alright, here's one I might be interested in...
http://www.autotrader.com/fyc/vdp.jsp?ct=p&car_id=304551361
It's an '03 sedan 6MT with 98k miles on it in Asheville, NC... Alpine White... Not my first choice, but I really like... Black leather with silver cube which I really like.
For my $15-16k budget ballpark, I was really shooting for more like an '04 or '05 with say 70-80k miles on it. But, this car looks really sharp, the Carfax makes it look like it's gotten great service. I could probably drive this car for a few years, sell it with 120k miles, and find an '06 coupe when my kids are both in booster seats, anyway.
One question I have is whether I should even drive this one the 950 miles back home... Carfax shows a recent coolant flush/fill 5,000 miles ago at 93,000, but I assume it has the original radiator, hoses, pump and overflow. Would you drive a 98,000-mile ZHP a thousand miles without a coolant system refurb?
Whaddya think of this one?
Thanks!

Hey Crab,
That Alpine looks to be in nice shape. It's an NC car so it won't have rust, and it's been sittin' around in Asheville by the looks of it, so it hasn't been exposed to the NC heat. For that price, it's pretty good. So long as it's been taken care of, and they have records, I would seriously consider making an offer.
As for your drive, that's up to you. If you're budgeting in the area of 16K, perhaps you should consider getting it shipped if you want to spend a little extra dough.

The AW does look good. Its also priced well. Seems to have about every option. Def has xenons and headlight washers, which were both unlisted. I live in Asheville (although it seems the seller lives around Aville, not in it.) I could easily recommend some PPI places, or check it out for you. (i couldnt look at it until next week sometime.) If he serviced it at the dealer, should be able to get dealer records. I work 3 miles from the dealer and could scan records to you as well if necessary.

I've had my eye on that one for that past week but I think it is a bit too far away, I am holding out for something closer. It does look very clean.

Steve, it looks good in pictures.
It has NAV, it's alpine white (on the more rare side for ZHPs), and it's in a good location.
If he sold it at 100,000 miles (a psychological marker number), he'd have to knock another $1000 off. Haha. When negotiating, keep bringing that number up. Also, the owner calls it a "beamer." You ought to knock $500 off the price for that gaffe! LOL.
Find out if he's done the cooling overhaul for this car. If not, you will likely be doing it down the road (sooner rather than later).
Offer $11.5K (you're going to incur some travel costs). I'd meet him at $12K (tops).
My two cents.

Nice post. there is a nice Imola 05 sedan in CO. 6MT. 56k miles. I am tempted to contact him, but $21k asking is very optimistic.
Does anyone know anything about the 04 Imola on ZHP registry in NJ? I have been in contact with the seller as it is pretty much exactly what I am looking for, but he is very slow to respond to questions, etc.

Hello, I am going to be buying a 2005 330cic for $17,000 and I was wondering if the price I'm paying is a good deal or if I'm over paying. The car has a natural brown interior that I have not seen very much, one of the most beautiful interiors I have ever seen. Here are the cars specs
Convertible
Jet Black
Performance Package
Cold weather package
55,000 miles
Xenon headlights
Basically the car has everything you can get besides the navigation, you guys know what I mean. The car is in excellent condition, all the service records have been provided to me. The car has never been in an accident or any type of collision, clean title. The body is in practically brand new condition as well as the interior. Oil is changed every 10,000 miles. Again, I am paying $17,000. This car on KBB would be considered excellent condition (just for your reference).
Please help me out guys and let me know how this price compares to the others and if the price is good.
Thanks
Marcus-SanDiego

That's a steal. Convertibles fetch a premium. The car has less than 60,000 miles on it. Black with natural brown is awesome.
Assuming it checks out during a pre-purchase inspection, I would be all over that.

This is more as a FYI because I read somewhere on our forum about the 'high' and 'unrealistic' prices sellers quote.
Well, check out this recent ebay sale for a '05 stick coupe, 67k miles, no nav but prem and cold: $19,950!
Granted, the 'east-coast' premium could have driven it up slightly, but still goes to show that there are some who are prepared to pay that much for the zhps. Maybe this ebay seller was lucky in finding someone wanting to pay premium on cars that have over 60k miles.
Lucky or not, the fact that deals have closed @ high prices is most probably the reason for sellers quoting high prices. Will be interesting to watch how the price holds.

He said he was firm at $19,950. I said that, with him having a new car on the way, he will come down in price. Since this car sold for $19,950 (on eBay) (http://rover.ebay.com/rover/1/711-53200-19255-0/1?ff3=4&pub=5574947307&toolid=10001&campid=5336776893&customid=&mpre=http%3A%2F%2Fcgi.ebay.com%2Febaymotors%2Fws%2 FeBayISAPI.dll%3FViewItem%26item%3D320744575491%2B %26viewitem%3D), I guess I got that one wrong.

Marcus, I wasn't referring any particular response that you or other members made in this thread. Sorry if that was how it came out.
Based on the responses both in this thread and in the for-sale threads, I got the impression that quite a few experienced members feel that the current prices are way too high. It is true in some cases, especially what the dealers quote for low mileage cars, but in general, prices for the last three/four months seem to have closed on the 'higher' side.
And this reaction is not only on our site; I remember reading a post on the e46fanatics site that $16k for a 04 loaded stick zhp in DC - that was old-school maintained - was 'high' because it had 70k miles on it. I wondered what he thought the 'fair' price should be, and he promptly responded $14k. Fact that the car got sold within days of listing and had multiple offers indicated that the $16k price seemed low enough for some. My take was that there was so much interest BECAUSE of the excellent maintenance that the owner had taken.

No, not at all. I was just making a matter-of-fact statement. I wanted to make sure I looped back, since we had weighed in on the vehicle's price before.
As to the DC car, I think $16K is a good price for a ZHP with 70K miles. Those guys over at fanatics low ball everything. They do not have a handle on ZHP pricing.
That said, I think we're pretty good here at ZHPMafia.com. We don't nail every price down but I think we're a lot closer than others who weigh in.
Finally, I think you're right about recent pricing. Things have firmed up. It could be a summer thing, though. I'd expect pricing to soften up as we move toward winter.
I'm pleased to see higher prices (higher closing prices). That's good for all current owners who may be interested in selling. Still, it's always on a case-by-case basis with me when it comes to these cars.
The ZHP sold for $19,950. Got his asking price. However, I am aware of another car -- on this forum -- that is likely going to get sold at a significant discount shortly.

I have sold three cars privately, all on Craigslist, one e30, one e46 and one Saturn, and all sold at or above KBB/Edmunds without much effort.
In or about 2004, my beloved 1990 325i e30 was getting a bit long in the tooth at about 170,000 - plus needed wheel bearing, engine mounts, tires, brakes, dent removal, still had the original cooling system, etc etc, so reluctantly I decided to sell so my wife could get her Land Rover. In retrospect I wished I kept it but I digress. Within the first day on craigslist, I had multiple offers and mind you this e30 had no bells and whistles. I sold the car in two days.
Same thing with the Saturn and 2003 330i e46. Indeed, I had five fast offers on the e46 that had me contemplating not selling. With all that interest, I actually had to go out and take her on a long spirited drive to see what, if anything I was missing. Alas, my fate had been sealed long ago when I first laid eyes on the coveted ZHP in addition to the positive prodding from ZHPMafia. Thie e46 sold quickly and at my price without any haggling.
I think there is a confluence of factors at work. First, and foremost, the economy. Used cars are certainly selling at a premium. Second, if the car is well maintained with records and is "clean" people are more comfortable purchasing at the asking price. Third, I dont think a lot of people like dealing with used cars salesmen/dealers and loathe the whole experience. It is easier to deal with someone via Internet or the phone, get a ppi then make an offer without any pressure. Fourth, I think people think they are getting a better deal if they are buying off eBay or craigslist. Finally, to me, it seems there is always someone out there that will pay your price. At least in my small experience.

I've sold two cars on Craigslist this summer - a 2009 Altima and a 2003 Maxima. Both sold within a few days of posting. Listed them at KBB private party excellent, and had interested parties there to look/drive in short order. Neither were anything special, both buyers were bargain hunters, and I sold both between wholesale and private party. Could have probably gotten a little more with a little more patience and bumping the listing once, but like I said, neither were anything special (like say, an e46 w/sport). Loving craigslist for selling cars so far.

You're in the right area. I think it's a bit on the pricey side. More than 85,000 miles now. I'd say that $16K is too much. If you can get it closer to $14K, then you're getting to where I think I'd be willing to buy it. That's me, though.
Car looks to be in good cosmetic shape. You will need to get a PPI done to make sure everything is in good mechanical order.

Any idea why it's missing the alcantara steering wheel? I thought BMW stopped including that in 2005.
They typically replaced the alcantara wheels with perf leather under cpo when they would wear out....if I'm not mistaken.

Ok I am looking at a car tomorrow. 70k, manual, 2004 330cic, ZHP, bi-xenon. Asking 16k, would paying 15k be to much? Also going to get a 3rd party check it out, anything I should look at in particular? Do you think a compression test is necessary? Thanks in advance guys, hopefully I will be frequenting this forum soon.

Without seeing the car, the convertible is worth $16K if the car is in good shape. You likely don't need a compression test. However, I'd do the PPI (which is what you're doing tomorrow). If you can get a compression test, all the better though.
And if you can get it for $15K, very nice.

Looking at a 2004 ZHP tomorrow. Person is 2nd owner, sent me the CarFax, which came back clear, no accident's and such. Says it has been well-maintained, and he has the maintenance records to prove it and such, the car has 177k miles, which he says are all highway due to his job. I might be able to get it for under 7k if I can do it right, is this a huge mistake?
Marcus-SanDiego
09-17-2011, 05:19 PM
My only comment is this: that's a lot of miles. Heading toward 200,000. Next major milestone for that car. But I have seen well maintained cars last well into the 300s and 400s.
Get a PPI on it. Have someone look at it with a fine-tooth comb.

It depends on maintenance, but if you can get it for that price... I wouldnt be scared. My buddies e36 M3 has well over 200k( he bought it years ago w 160k), and it rips. It drives smooth and he hasnt had any issues with it. Plus I just love his wheels:drool

Went and looked at the car today. Exterior is very very clean, aside from a quarter-sized dent in the door, and a spidercrack in the rear bumper. Interior looks brand new, no cracks in leather, and it seems like It's barely been sat in. Drove it, and did not notice anything out of the ordinary, shifted very smoothly. Seller told me to go ahead and give it some gas, so I got it to about 90 mph without a problem, no shuddering or shaking, any noises whatsoever. Car has brand new tires / brakes, and I can definitely feel them, I'm -possibly- buying tomorrow for 6,500, should things be alright.

I did not get a PPI unfortunately, I will probaly kick myself for it, or I might not. I know a few things about BMW's, specifically 3 series, and looked for common problems, such as whiny noises when turning, check-engine lights(which none were visible.) Vanos rattle, etc. The electronics all worked, no problem with window regulators, like I said, very smooth clutch,(stock he says) and it shifts better then my 126k mileage 2001. I did notice it took about 2 seconds or so to start, (mind it was pretty damn cold this morning when I went and looked) And the idle stood around 1.2kish, a little more then my does on a cold start, if anyone has an idea to that.
Audi 0000
09-18-2011, 05:21 PM
If the idle was fine after warm-up, I dont know if I'd be too concerned. Most cars now idle up a little when cold, per the ecm, and if the secondary air system is running that could also cause this. It could maybe be a vacuum leak or something, but that would cause problem all the time, and prob throw a CEL. 6500 is cheap for an E46, that is still under 200k. Good luck with it, and have fun.

Hey Gang,
I found this car on eBay. The pics look very nice. The one thing it doesn't have is the seat heaters but I imagine I can find something aftermarket. I would have to drive it cross-country. Since I have flight privileges I'm thinking that would be about $1200 for gas, hotels and food. Wha'cha think?

1. Don't bank on something aftermarket regarding heated seats.
2. Nice car.
3. Offer $17.5k

And what I think is...
You might have it trucked to you for under $1200. Where are you located?
This is not an endorsement of their service but try dasautoshippers.com for a quote.
But if you're simply up for a road trip, go for it but bring your police radar detector. A couple speeding tix will blow that travel budget nicely.
Edit: seller doesn't seem to know it's a ZHP...

The only way I'd consider it is if we're talking 50% or less of KBB "Fair," before after pictures of the damage with full repair invoice and parts list, and I could put it on a frame rack and alignment rack and know for sure she runs in a straight line.

+1 - would need to be an amazing deal and I would require it to have certain issues that caused the salvage to not be there (chassis would need to be undamaged from whatever happened to cause salvage would be my #1 issue to check, other issues can be solved). Generally, I'm not opposed if it's the right car and right price

a PPI from a dealership isn't always the greatest thing in the world.
All I'd make sure is that I have an impartial 3rd party do the inspection and provide a written report to you. The report pictured came from the guys selling it? I'm not sure I understand your first sentence.
Dane, its listed as +/- 1mph which I would assume is a tolerance, not that its reading 1mph at all speeds.

Autobahn Imports is a third party... Impartial :dunno ? The car is being sold by OCC Inc. The inspection was performed for someone else who is interested in the car. My plan is to go out on Monday and take it to the local BMW dealership for the PPI. I've spoken to them and they are willing to perform the inspection.

Ah, I understand now. That's really your call. I got a $200 PPI done at BMW Bridgeport CT on my first ZHP that said the A/C was broken and that it needed new belts (neither of which was true), needed a new GM to the tune of $1000 (with no symptoms), and went on to miss a non-functioning driver xenon headlamp, so going to BMW for the PPI doesn't even remotely mean it will be done correctly.

If you're that interested in the car ask if you can have the car go for PPI (pre inspection purchase). I had a car I thought "seemed" well kept after PPI it turned out it need $4200 worth of work. (shocks, shock mounts cracked, leaking valve cover, etc....) I didn't purchase it.
If your buddy already found control arm bushings worn and leaking powersteering pump, chances are, more will be found. Especially if there are no records. If you don't mind working on the car and you can get the price down it maybe worth it. Check the VIN# too through AutoCheck or CarFax. Which are affilates on this forum. (Auto check).

Unless you're willing to try to haggle the price, I would keep moving. In fact, the hint that the thermostat is stuck open leads me to believe that this car may have been neglected.
If you do decide to jump on it, I would definitely refurbish the cooling system before anything else. Like, complete overhaul refurbish. Then I would go ahead and do the CABs and then finally fix the leaky PS pump. I'm assuming it's not super leaky, as in, "I need a quart per week" or, "I can't turn left or the fluid will spill out."
IMO I would ask $12,800 simply because those wheels look rash-free.

While a PPI is pretty much required in my opinion, be prepared to take the results with a grain of salt. My first ZHP's PPI came back with $3200 in work needed and it was literally completely fine. It is not a definitive go/no-go gauge....just one more piece that should be added to the decision matrix in your mind.
Things quoted here...FCABs, fluid leaks, thermostats, shocks, shock mounts......are all frankly par for the course for a set of cars no younger than 5-6 years old. They are also all relatively easy DIY replacements that you can do for low cost, start to get your hands dirty on your new ride, and use as bargaining chips to negotiate the price.
My 0.02 anyway.

Hello fellas. I just sold my 1999 323i and have been searching for the right ZHP. I found one.....2005, 330i, automatic(the Mrs wants an automatic), xenon, alcantra leather inserts, exterior is silver gray, interior is black, 94,000 miles, tinted windows all around. He was asking $16,900 and I talked him down to $14,800 plus he needs to get the SRS light cleared. I had PPI done today and they found the following:
1. Valve cover gasket starting to seep (easy DIY, $50-$75)
2. Metallic sound coming from A/C vents, Low A/C refrigerant (not sure about sound, must consult tech)
3. Rear brakes are aftermarket, passenger rear rotor showing deep groves (easy DIY, $200)
4. Rear Differential is leaking from all seals ($$$?) Approximately how much is this? I never did this on my E46.
5. Main belt showing light cracking (easy DIY, $35)
6. Rear tail lamp connection show signs of burnt ground wire (will take to BMW to replace since it's a Recall item now)
7. Air Bag Light---Passenger Seat Occupancy Mat (Car Fax shows it was replaced at 38K miles, is this a common failure?) I noticed the light upon my personal inspection and requested that he repair the sensor prior to the sale so this repaired is covered.
Now with all of these items, and given it has 94K Miles, I still think it is a good deal but am debating to ask for a reduction of price given this minimal repairs. The only ones which scare me are the AC and the Differential. I was thinking to ask for a $500 reduction, but I am not sure what is fair.
Thank you everyone for your help.

1. Valve cover gasket starting to seep (easy DIY, $50-$75) - Plan around $180 here so you can do VANOS seal and anti-rattle kit.
2. Metallic sound coming from A/C vents, Low A/C refrigerant (not sure about sound, must consult tech) - Could be blower motor, and prolly needs a evac and recharge.
3. Rear brakes are aftermarket, passenger rear rotor showing deep groves (easy DIY, $200) - Agree
4. Rear Differential is leaking from all seals ($$$?) Approximately how much is this? I never did this on my E46. - All Seals? Need specifics.
5. Main belt showing light cracking (easy DIY, $35) - Do the other belts and pulleys.
6. Rear tail lamp connection show signs of burnt ground wire (will take to BMW to replace since it's a Recall item now) - Yup. Agree.
7. Air Bag Light---Passenger Seat Occupancy Mat (Car Fax shows it was replaced at 38K miles, is this a common failure?) I noticed the light upon my personal inspection and requested that he repair the sensor prior to the sale so this repaired is covered. - In my estimation...this is impossible to DIY (I have tried). Big money at dealer, I am sure ~ $1000?
Also....car is going to need suspension refresh. What work was done here?
Also....coolant overhaul is due.

So the guy from the dealer called me back and said they would fix the problems that i listed. I am going on back to NJ on wed for my wedding so hopefully the car is still there when i return from my honeymoon. If not, then i guess it wasnt meant to be mine.

Hello Dane!
Thank you for your comments. In regards to the DIFF, all 3 seals require replacement and the cover must be resealed.
I spoke with the owner and he will only drop the price to how much he owes on the loan which is $14,600. I can probably do most of the required repairs, however I'm not sure if $14,600 is too high. The rest of the car is good, and I also agree with the additional repairs you recommended.
The passenger occupancy mat requires the removal of the seat, then take off the leather and replace the mat. So, it's not too hard just takes time.
Is this still a good deal, or shall I walk away? I told the owner I would let him know tomorrow.
Thank you to everyone on this forum! I appreciate it!

Hey guys,
I think I may have found my car. Has all the options I want. Looks to be in very good condition. 88k on it. and has very good service history. Price just seems a little steep. Now I don't mind paying full price for a good car, and not getting a "deal", just figured I would throw it out there to get the Mafia's opinion.
Car is in Georgia, and I am in Michigan. Here is where it gets interesting. Seller is a delta airline pilot, and will hook me up with a flight down, and can arrange for me to get in on a hoist, which is great being as I am a BMW tech., I think it says alot for the confidence the seller has in in the car. And he was very quick to send me pics of everything I asked for.
Is $16,000 crazy money for a 2005 Sedan, Auto, cold weather, xenon, ect. that is in great shape, with full history, and comes with an extra set of 17 inch wheels with good rubber? No scratches on 135's, ect. Looks like KBB is about 15,000.
Thanks,
Woody

Sounds about right price, and if you get a ticket down + winter wheels an even better deal. Throw in you're a tech so you don't have to pay for PPI and I would be all over that if I was in your case. Also, KBB prices our cars with the regular 330, they dont understand the slight premium ZHPs seem to get. Pics?

Woody, from the info you've provided sounds like a fair price. I've been searching for about 3 months and I feel the cars with that milage and options are getting between 15000-17000. Obviously if you have that feeling when see it live that its a car that you can live with and not feel like you spent too much when you drive it home then you'll be satisfied with your purchase. IMHO
P.S. I'm still seaching

Please do not solicit Autocheck reports here (the same thing goes for Carfax reports, too). I don't want our forum to be the forum that violates the licensing agreement that exists between the buyer and entity that provides those reports.
Autocheck and Carfax watch carefully for this kind of activity. Since I actively moderate this forum, I have a duty to make sure I don't allow it.
Thanks, guys. And, Steve, nothing personal. Your comment just gives me a chance to remind members that we should not do it.

Is this a good deal? Hoping he will take it to Euro Auto Spot for a pre-purchase inspection today. It's very clean inside and out including the engine compartment. There is one tiny dent in a fender, which is barely noticeable. The biggest negative is that there are no maintenance records. The seller has only had the car for a few months (says he's selling to help finance a house), and the previous owner couldn't find the records - he has only an email from him saying that he recently did (tranny fluid/diff fluid, coolant/brake fluid the previous year, ...).

At that mileage it is too expensive with no records.
It also raises a bit of a flag to me that it comes with no records and a current owner that is unloading it quickly. Quick turnarounds are always a cause for an eyebrowraise in my book. "couldn't find the records" etc, just compounds and compounds to start to sound sketchy.
For this to be a green light for me, I'd need a VERY detailed PPI with code scan by a shop that knows E46s inside and out, and a lower price...maybe 12,5-13 or so.
All of that said, there is just as fair a chance that this is a great car for a decent price. Just needs to be looked over by someone with deep E46 experience.

I'm with Paul.
Shane and those guys at Euro Auto Spot do know these cars inside and out (so the PPI will be well done) but without any records -- at nearly 100,000 miles -- the car is too expensive.

Thanks. That was my feeling too. I can see it's going to need brakes and tires within a year. If it weren't that folding rear seats are so hard to find on a ZHP sedan, I'd pass.
As it is, it's going to be hard to part with my '98 E36 M3, the best car I've ever owned.

It may have gone that way for you so far, but in my hunt I found a pretty fair amount of sedans with folding seats. Look for the cold wx pkg (heated seats, headlight washers) and you'll start finding more.
The rare beast is silbergrau + alcantara + navi + cold wx. That is my unicorn. Only found one in 16 months of daily searching and it was a POS.

I'm looking at a ZHP right now:
The rundown:
05 coupe
6MT
75k miles
Silver/black leather
leather wheel
HK sound
Hot seats
I think it had xenons... it was daytime I didn't use them. I checked the lenses, they are AL's.
Asking 17k (beast coast)
Now, the shape it's in:
I gave the car a good look over and quick test drive. It's at an independent dealer. Cosmetically on the outside it is pretty good, there are some nicks on the skirts and bumper but nothing you wouldn't expect on a 75k car. However there is some blemish on the hood around where a bra would attach. Dealer said it goes through the clearcoat a bit, but they will try to rub and buff it out some. When I saw the car they had just gotten it and had not given it a detail, so I was seeing it straight from the PO.
Inside was a little worse, luckily the leather is in I would say good shape for the miles. The bad, the black cube trim on the drivers door is pretty scratched. Some nicks here and there. Some scuffing around the center console/armrest. The cloth lining on the c pillars is coming off (not the A pillars, though). The seat backs have scrapes, it looks like long skis or poles or something were carried and let rub up on and scrape the seat backs. Dealer acknowleged all of this, actually pointed out some of it to me. I'm curious to see it after they detail.
Mechanically, switches all work. All lights light up. Windows roll up smooth as does the sunroof. Played with the fan/heater a little and it seems to do what you'd expect for the setting. Weather stripping seemed ok. I'm looking out for common E46 stuff here, although I have not actually so much as sat in an e46 before. Under the hood, the firewall was hanging out of the tabs a bit. Smelled a litttttle like oil after the drive, but not extreme. I didn't see any oil seep but I didn't look that hard, I should pry around a bit more later.
Driving, he warned me they are about to replace a CAB and the steering vibrates. Which it did. It's a must-drive after he fixes it as there is no way I would buy this car with the wobbly steering. So assuming that gets fixed, trans seemed ok. Motor smooth, nothing set my spidey sense off too bad.
I gotta ask about maintenance history, though I doubt he will have much as an indie dealer. He is cool with me getting a PPI, which is a must in this case IMO. Assuming it checks out and there are no big gremlins, and it gets cleaned up, I think 17k is still a little much. Closer to 16k seems right. I've seen lower milage cleaner cars go for 16 but they are rare and seem to be dealers who have no idea what car they've got. This guy knows it's an "M package" but he thinks it's an appearance pack. What do you all think?
Ohh yeah, tires aren't shot but they don't have much life left.
If it looks mint and everything is fixed next time I see it I think I'd pay 16 for it... if not maybe 15 at most. I'm not in a hurry although the car is very close to me and that is worth something IMO. Wow that was long... :eyetwitch

Patience is key and it is good that you are not pressed to buy it. It took me 9 months of looking, and when I finally found the one, I had bad dreams of someone grabbing it first, especially when I saw people in the Mafia asking questions about it. Mine sounds like it is similar or slightly cleaner than the one you are looking at, and I was able drive away from a private seller with 70k miles, 2004 sedan for 14.5.
If everything checks out mechanically and you can deal with the few cosmetic blemishes, hopefully you can talk them down some. If you pass, there will be another one out there eventually. Be sure to post a link to the car if it doesn't work out. Good luck and keep us updated.

Price seems good to me.
Several things stand out: one, the original style 135 wheels are gone. Two, the steering wheel is wrapped, which leads me to believe the Alcantara steering wheel that's hiding underneath could be trashed. And, three, someone ran this car nearly out of gas.
The price, though, is good. Be sure to take a close look at the car when you see it on Saturday. Look for signs of paintwork. A clean Carfax doesn't mean anything to me. Also, do you plan on getting a PPI done?

Awesome car. Silver cube, great color, ///M3 rims (not necessarily great), and I would be interested to know what is under that "wheelskin" they have on there. I have the same one.
Why do dealers always leave the tank on empty? Argh!

Nomar, both look good to me. The first one has Alcantara seats but a leather steering wheel (probably replaced due to premature wear) and the Performance (Aluminum) Brace. The second looks really good and has some nice options, AW floor mats, Nav w/2011 disc, homelink and heated seats. I can't tell from the pic if it has fold down rear seats (doesn't look like full ZCW since I don't see the headlight washers). The steering wheel looks like its worn on the second car, so for either car I would contact Coby and get a new wheel done.

http://www.globalelitemotors.com/vehicle_pages/WBAEV534X3KM04805-2003-BMW-3-SERIES.shtml
I'd prefer a later model year and heated seats, but the low mileage and nearby location is tempting. I figure I could possibly do a heated seat retrofit with the money saved from trucking a car from somewhere else.
Contacted the seller and asking price is $20,000. I'm guessing somewhere around $18,000-18,500 is more reasonable?
Any thoughts?

I've been looking specifically for a red on black leather 6-speed ZHP sedan for awhile and one finally popped up right in my neighborhood. The CL ad and my conversation with the owner didn't sound too promising but what the hell, I had to give it a look. At least I could report my findings to our great community and save someone some time.
WBAEV53404KM06256
12/03 Production
First the good news: It's red (if you're into that). It runs. It shifts. It stops. New Conti summer tires, front rotors, pads, stock wheels refinished. All 4 window regulators seem OK. No sunroof (if you must have no sunroof)-- to me and most buyers this is a negative.
The bad news: This car has clearly been neglected. Owner not an enthusiast. If it ain't broke don't fix it! No service records.
Body: Car was not garaged in the last 5 years. With Chicago's snowy salty winters, this is a big no-no. Left front fender replaced from 11/2010 accident. Right rear door and right rear 1/4 panel repainted at some point. Clear coat peeling by door window trim, C-pillar trim, fuel filler door. Paint mismatched. 2 door dings. Front bumper is toast from hitting parking blocks. Rear bumper a mess from city parking. Both door mirror glass foggy and delaminating. Chrome door threshold strips all banged up. Hood and trunk roundels worn out.
Interior: Owner is a smoker and smokes in car. Leather in need of conditioning. Driver's left seat bolsters have seen better days. Black cube trim nicked up in several spots. Carpets dirty and have salt stains from winter driving. Alcantara steering wheel totally gone and shredded to pieces.
Mechanical: I popped the hood and simultaneously shed a little tear and threw up a little bit in my mouth. I've never seen a filthier engine compartment. Coolant dirty. Trunk dirty and had 2 winter wheels and snow tires in it. Battery appeared original (8+ years- go BMW!)
Price $13,500 firm.

Yep, it sure is... It's in my driveway!
As for current market, I'd say it isn't much different than any car. The big thing is whether or not seller knows about the ZHP. That will determine whether or not they negotiate or stand firm on the asking price. At least, that was my experience when I bought mine. Either way, everything will sell for the right price.

Doesn't matter, but thanks for the offer. It's already sitting next to GiGi's car.

A guy on here bought an orient blue step vert with 25k miles for $18,000 recently, for what it's worth.

KBB puts it between $16k and $18.8k, depending on condition, from a private party. That's without adding any packages, ie cold weather, sport, performance packages.
Link (http://www.kbb.com/bmw/3-series/2006-bmw-3-series/330ci-convertible-2d/?condition=excellent&vehicleid=40&intent=buy-used&mileage=50000&category=convertible&pricetype=private-party#survey)
Thanks guys. I've also checked the online guides and it seems to fall within those ranges. The real world can be different though, which is why I'm asking the Mafia experts.
Just talked to the salesman to say I was coming to look it over ... somebody had just bought it.

A quality higher end one would tend to command a slight premium in the sunny states though. One like you mentioned would have an extremely wide appeal so it would be very easy to sell. It's almost the cliche classic vert, which could appeal to enthusiasts, posers, DDers, someone who just wants a nice car, someone who wants to stand out, the whole gambit. Maybe you could ask them what it sold for.
BTW, it's seemingly the reverse with lower end verts in the sunny states, as there tends to be more of them available, so not quite the premium.

:cool OP, sorry to hear it sold so fast. Similar thing happened to me recently: I saw on Autotrader a 2005 ZHP sedan Imola Red on a Friday. When I called on Monday morning it was gone !
Oh, well. That only means we need to look a little longer.
Truth be told my search is not purely for a ZHP, but this one was priced and described as if the dealer didn't know exactly what it was. Oh well ... the search is at least half the fun!

Someone else posted this one on 8/10, the then asking price was $12,000. The price is $11,000 now. Is this too good to be true?
Reviewing the CarFax report, I see 2 possible flags:
1. The car made a lot of trips to the dealership. In several cases, there were two trips only 1 or 2 months apart, each with either inspection performed, or even oil change (unusally frequent). Wondering if there is some major issues.
2. The car apparently was bought and serviced at SF BMW all the time, yet when it was finally traded in, the dealer put it into auction. I would assume the used car manager knows ZHP is in high demand, and a clean one-owner, low mile car like this one will sell fast with a significantly higher price than we are seeing now.
With all the said, I did talk to the sales person there, and also found that the used car dealer owns a auto shop right next door.
I am very tempted by the price and overall condition from the picture and CarFax, but a little worried why such a nice car priced relatively low had such a hard time to sell. In the last few months, I saw 2 cars at local BMW dealer with lower mileage, but higher price sell within a day or two.
Can you folks chime in?
Thanks in advance

I would not be worried with the carfax history. But, I wonder why the car has been for sale 3 months already (since 06/28/2013).
How far is the dealer from you ? I believe a test drive is in order and then you decide if it's worth to pay for a PIP.

I don't know. I'd see it more as a very attentive PO, vs most owners who don't care and just swap cars every 4 years. Also the SF market has a lot of money, so maybe people are just looking for more recent cars, etc... I'd go test drive it, do a thorough inspection, and go for it if it checks out. Maybe people try to haggle and the dealer is firm, etc.

Update - I went to the dealer, and took a test drive. They have replaced the catalyst converter and clutch, so shifting was very smooth, and the power train seems to be fine.
But cosmetically, it was big let down. All 4 wheels are badly scratched. Left fog light is broken. paint scratches everywhere - on the hood, roof, trunk lid, etc. albeit not deep ones, and might be buffed off. Interior is average, to the best, at least no cracks or deep crease on the seats, but boy, they can really use a nice detailing. It is just dirty.
It is always amazing that dealers would try to save money on detailing (including BMW dealers), and try to convince customers that they can get the car cleaned and detailed to "like new" condition. Well, why don't you do it and show it, then I will just buy it.
Anyway, the car certainly did not live to my expectation, so I did not even bother to take it to PPI. I guess that explains why the car has been on the lot for 2 months, and had to reduce the price from $13K to the current $11K.
Nevertheless, it could be a good buy if someone is not that anal to the cosmetic stuff.

I like the color. I'd prefer alcantara, you like black leather? This "appears" to be a good deal. Your next steps? BTW, the $9350 seems like an off price.
Shawn, called the seller and got something set up next Tuesday. Going to check it out and see what the deal is with it.

Since I have the unlimited license plate report, I ran the CarFax. Title is clean, no accidents reported. CarFax says 4 owners, really should be 3 as the second owner is a dealership with 8 days. The current owner had it for 2 year 3 months.
Has been a NY/NJ car until 2007, the VA. Not much service records though.
let us know how the car checks out.
What about this one?
2004 330ci ZHP Coupe
6spd
Black/black alcantara
139,000 miles
Currently in PA - plate GKF-7807
Asking price $13,000 which seems on the high side of the spectrum.
Seller who is a bmw master tech has stated though the vehicle does have
New belts
Polyurethane front control arm bushings. New clutch at 90k, clutch bypass valve installed.
Front piano black kidney grilles, carbon fiber hood, trunk, steering wheel emblems
