Subtle Mafia Representation?

We all want to be distinguished amongst the road, but also online. We are working on vinyls for the road... Now for the online aspect. Suppose for us on e46fanatics/BF.c/etc changed our avatars to that our Mafia's avatar? I know Dane did that, although before this forum started up, but it'd be a good way to represent and distinguish ourselves.

I'm still using ps7, but I just picked up a copy of cs5 off the back of a truck. If you need any help I know quite a bit about it, I assume the core hasnt changed much since 7. Unfortunately it does take a lot of practice and memory to be good, there's a ton of stuff in there. If I could go back to the beginning to learn, I'd start by learning about layers. I feel layers are the core of working in photoshop. I just threw together a badge, but the problem is the avatar size is so small there just isn't any room to add something people can see, recognize, and read. 80x80 is a very small space to work in. Here's my badge, and then my badge applied to my avatar. The badge is 400x400, then it will get scaled down to something like 35x35 to look how it does on my avatar. Last is the badge made to fit as the 80x80 avatar.

Yeah, it's just too small. I'm trying to think of another way to work it into everyone's avatar, but there's not much I can do. The text on the logo is just too small at that size. I'm going to try and watermarkish it into my avatar, enough to make out what it is but not enough to consume the avatar. First, I must go inhale some inspiration and eat dinner.

The next question is, which blue do you want from that? That's not a single color, but rather a short gradiant of blues (one of which i picked from that same logo); the upper left quadrant is much lighter than the lower right. It looks like a lighting effect pointed at the upper left of the entire logo, and it changes the colors slightly as you move across it. I could try and match the gradient, match the lighting effect, or just plain rip off the interior portion of the logo. It may look odd if the entire logo doesn't have the lighting but the center does.
I was trying to go for a customized version of the logo made from a b&w vector file, which is about as raw as it gets before any fancy stuff is added. The true bmw logo (at least the one on their website) shows the same lighting effect as your image. At this point it's all about how close you want it to match the real thing vs. something home made just for us. The letter and edges also all have bevels on them, which is yet another level of complexity to match I didn't notice at first. Also the color on the outer ring is gray, mine is white. The idea when going small is to keep it simple. Otherwise awesome looking effects are very diminished on a small scale and sometimes not noticeable or even make the image look worse.

That's all the space I needed. Looks like below 40x40 the logo starts getting pixilated, but with 100x100 I was able to bump the logo up to about 50x50 and I like how it looks now, what do you think:

Guys - I need you to pick new images for avatars to fill the 125x125 space we now have, or at least 100x100. If I use what you currently have, the result will be even smaller than the 80x80 ones I was first making. I don't have time to remake everyone's avatar and badge it, especially considering I can't enlarge an image and keep the quality the same.
Your sizes are currently:
dane - 80x69
ndub - 60x80
mtn - 80x45

Let me know once you make them 125x125 so I can overlay the badge. I can pull it right off any post you've made once you upload a new avatar. If you can't make it 125x125, link me a raw picture bigger than that size (preferably with square dimensions, or cropping will have to happen) and I'll see what I can do. If you want to keep your avatar sizes, I can put the badge on anyway at 40x40 and it will take up 1/2 your avatar.

Your source photo is 300px × 384px. However, your avatar photo is 98px × 125px.

What I do is search on Google for 300px x 300px photos. Then I have our site resize it automatically to fit -- which yields a 125px x 125px photo. The key is to start off with a photo that has the same dimensions -- height and width. Then it gets resized here perfectly.

Imperfections in some of those are bothering me now that I see them in place on your avatars. I'll fix the edge of the circle so it doesn't cut off. Even if it is a few pixels, it looks weird if you look close to the bottom. I'm doing all this while I just had my engine detailed, took a round of pics of the car, and eating some cold stone creamery ice cream. I still have yet to open illustrator and try that, so I got a lot to do tonight.

It's hard to find a good quality image to steal w/angel eyes for the background. I didn't even notice the difference. I need a good high res/good lighting pic of someone's front end with angel eyes, just like whats in there now. I'll see if I can dig one up in the meantime.

I agree about going color matched. Everyone (including me) had matte black, so it would be more unique and, let's face it, that red is a damn sexy color. You can't have too much Imola red.

I'll grab one in the daylight tomorrow and post it up. I like it with the rear diffuser because it's subtle. Not sure how subtle it would look on the front, but then again the chrome kidneys are anything but subtle.

I just took a look at Mtnman's images to see about reworking the car in the site logo into an actual zhp. I came across this one actually by accident, I slipped and hit the wrong layer blending option while I had opacity still at 100% (it's 50% in the logo now, meaning the blending type used on the layer is only 50% visible). Being a different color than the other car I used, the layer blending option reacts differently to the new image. I think we may have an improvement, especially considering it's not only a real zhp, but one in possession of a member of the site and a totally original image. What's everyone else think?:

Awesome, I don't think it can get much better. Anyone is free to make improvements or suggestions still. I upgraded my photoshop to cs5, so I updated the psd file for this version - if anyone wants it let me know. I couldn't get illustrator cs5 to work so I got cs3. I have yet to play with it, maybe later tonight. I'm still getting used to cs5 as I'm coming from verison 7 - a 5 version difference I think. I'm glad they keep all the keyboard shortcuts the same, because they love to move their toolbar icons around.

There's a big difference between the red currently on the little logos and the red pulled directly from a car. I used a gradient from a dark spot on the car to a light spot and got this. Also the forum background isn't white, just close to it. I matched the background of the site, so these will look seamless, or should anyway.

There's a big difference between the red currently on the little logos and the red pulled directly from a car. I used a gradient from a dark spot on the car to a light spot and got this. Also the forum background isn't white, just close to it. I matched the background of the site, so these will look seamless, or should anyway.

Tampa, any way to get those icons a little more round? They look a little lopsided on the site. No?

I'll give it a shot. I think the white ring around it is throwing it off. Lesson 2 in photoshop: when you use the transform option on something (ctrl + t), holding shift will transform and keep the l&w ratio locked so it shrinks or grows equally on both dimensions. That image should be as circular as the large version is, what I think is happening is when it's shrunk down that small it has to lose detail because a bigger image has a lot more pixels available to show subtle changes such as a curved line. Try representing a curved line when all you have is square pixels next to each other, it starts to look pixelated. The ones you had don't have that white ring around the outside mine has, so I can just take that off to get a little more space. Hopefully that's enough, it's essentially the same problem as with the avatars. You shrink and image enough, and you just wont have the same image anymore. Can you increase the size of those, a few pixels might help.

By the way, Tampa, even though the icons started at 55x55, they got scaled to 48x48 on the site. I'll figure out where I change the parameters for that and see how it looks. For now, it's looking good.

Looks pretty good. Those few pixels will make it look slightly more clear and bigger of course.
